DR. NADIR ALI | Why LDL Goes Up on Low Carb + Is LDL Cholesterol Bad + Risks of Statins

- Dr. Nadir Ali, an interventional cardiologist clears up confusion about LDL and answers questions like is LDL cholesterol really bad for us? Why does LDL cholesterol go up on a low carb diet? Are statins bad for you? Do statins prevent or cause heart disease?
As a leading cardiologist in the high fat, low carb space, Dr. Nadir Ali has been paving the way in advocating that we should not fear high LDL cholesterol when other numbers are in line such as low triglycerides, low insulin and glucose, low inflammation, and high HDL cholesterol.
Statins are commonly prescribed for elevated LDL cholesterol but as Dr. Ali discusses in this video, we may be treating high LDL all wrong. Statins have been shown to have significant side effects like cognitive and memory problems, fatigue, and muscle pain for many patients. Elevated LDL has been shown to be important for sex hormones, muscle function, cognition, and inflammation.

I am Dr Jahangir from Bangladesh working in the same area want to do program with you Thanks
I have some friends, family members and myself that after we have had removed the gallbladder, we became pre diabetics, having all this kind of issues like high LDL, is there any kind of relation between not having the gallbladder and this diseases???🤔
There is no cognitive dissonance just lack of knowledge or it's just genetics
That's all extremely important, but why do you NOT use better microphones? C'mon, we have 21st century, and yet you sound so apalling that at times it's just hard do understand what you're saying. Both of you! Actually it sounds far worse than when I spoke to my grandma over a wire phone line in a remote rural area 70 years ago!!
@piotrang8634 maybe you need hearing aids!?!
My doctor prescribed the statins, I left them in the cabinet and followed these dietary guideline, my numbers went down, his ego was maintained, and I kept stress levels down by not discussing. I've learned to get my tests done with my doctor, and then not follow his advice. It has worked 100% of the time.
Could be a good lesson learned for your doctor if you were more honest with him.
@@veronicagrave159 Nope. Didn't want to hear it. And to be honest, I don't go to the doctor to teach, but I do get my tests I need ordered - most of the time anyway.
@@michelepelletier1390 no problem. I understand.
Love your approach. I agree totally.
Agree, I do that too I only use the doctor to get the necessary tests done, and always request the prints of the tests.
If prescribed any medication I don't believe in or want to take, I simply don't take it - I've seen too much damage done by medication-pushing doctors, to consider their advice, and go to the pharmacy and use to pay for medicine, that I know will only do more harm than good.
Finally, a doctor who is willing to question the medical establishment. We need more like this.
Glad you enjoyed this video!
US doctors are not allowed to do that. Standard of care issues and insurance liability. So you get statins.
And we will get more of them if we CHALLENGE what our establishment docs tell us. If we meekly take the pharma driven "medicines" that they prescribe then the mainstream beat will go on.
Maybe we do need more that question some of the medical practices these days, but these docs are not the ones to be doing it. He cherry picks the data and does a very poor job of explaining things. His own observations of patients is not scientific, but anecdotal. He shouldn’t be using information like that without a disclaimer. He claims such evidence a compelling, but it’s anything but!
@@zochert57 That's true , and I agree with a lot of what he says - especially LDL being good (if it is in the large particle form). However, he is making the leap that the high fat diet /low fat is responsible for his and others' improvement; and the only way. I have the exact same lipid pattern - low triglycerides, high HDL, high LDL, good sugar, on the thin side - 5'5" 105 lbs, 62/y/o; low BP, no cardiac disease, good health, active, no medications and I have always eaten what I'd call a diet of moderation - and now, I'd call it high carb . So, obviously this diet is not the only way to achieve good health. I think the removing of processed foods, and avoiding pesticides/chemicals is responsible for the improvement many feel - b/c I hear it from all types of extreme diets, from carnivore to vegan. I worry about people thinking they need to do extreme diets when it is more complicated. Also our artificial light, exposure to non native EMF's raises blood sugar and has metabolic effects that are ignored by most MDs and diet gurus; but we must start to be more broad in looking at the entire environment - not just food.
*I had very high blood sugar I only managed to improve my health when I found a WONDERFUL treatment,❤❤ if you want to know about it, I left the video in the comment reply*

My wife and I are arguing over LDL. My body, my decision! Trying to stay married, but I have to be alive, to accomplish my goal! My LDL went up, but weight went down, and my sugar is staying below 150, and that’s what my doctor wants! I’ve been Carnivore since August 8, and I’m staying in that lifestyle! If doctors are having trouble finding information on this lifestyle, imagine how much trouble the rest of us are having.
That’s wild… My wife who has auto-immune epilepsy uses carnivore and animal based to help with here autoimmune condition and for anti inflammatory benefits. I’ve used it to combat and completely eliminate my hypoglycemia. The WHO and other large entities have changed their stance on Cholesterol and sat fat. Maybe let her know this and direct her towards those resources so she can see for herself. It can take folks awhile to jump on and stop fearing LDL… It’s just at the scene of the accident, not the cause. The science studies used to associate cholesterol and saturated fat with fat with heart disease, diabetes etc were and are old questioners , and nutrition science is difficult to conduct ethically and accurate. We simply can’t get accurate metrics unless you lock someone up and force them to be in a lab… So these studies are faulty at best and shouldn’t be assumed that associating is causing…. What about the other lifestyles of these folks in the folks? This goes over the top of an average persons head. Added sugars, starches, , trans fat, high triglycerides, and high blood pressure is what we should be worried about, not something we’ve been eating for millions of years(from ape to human). The food the health care professionals recommend we eat hasnt really even been around for 100 years(seed oils, new age crap bread full of too much gluten, plethora of new herbicide, pesticide, gmo, varieties of vegetables, fruit that never existed.. These are all things to think about and consider.
This can take many years to understand. It’s a rabbit hole. Like all things in life, surfaces are not as they appear most of the time. It’s the case here too. Proof is in the poodin’, or the meat! Best of luck and stay open-minded and patient..
This was amazing information, I had high ldl and triglycerides 8 months ago , I took statins and broke into hives all over my body, then I turned to low carb low sugar diet and now my triglycerides have gone down tremendously but LDL is still high . Listening to your conversation gave me such peace of mind . I am really grateful ❤

He was truly a very kind man and great guest, thanks for leaving your supportive feedback.
This is a great discussion and sheds some light on my own moderately elevated LDL. I have adopted an OMAD lifestyle for the past 18 months and have attained some shocking goals. However, I’ve changed so many variables that it is unclear which ones have been the major contributors. I suspect, more than anything else, has been the fact that I typically avoid anything from a box, can, or plastic bag that has been highly processed and contains ingredients I can’t pronounce! I do consume a huge amount of food in a 2 hour window in the evening consisting of a Mediterranean style composition (high EVOO, wide range of low lectin vegetables, primarily goat and sheep dairy products, wide range of herbs and spices, and whatever protein my wife feels like having for dinner). I am not a zealot and will consume anything put in front of me when we go out to friends or to a restaurant (which is,I guess, once or twice a week). I had been on meds for diabetes, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure for many years, but shocked my doctor and no longer require any of them. I don’t know how much weight I’ve dropped, but I’ve had to donate all of my clothes and currently maintain a very small wardrobe because it is still dropping. I think OMAD has significant benefits, but suspect avoiding processed foods has contributed more to my improved health. I suspect big Pharma and the Mega food industry has been the main issues in my life. I don’t miss either one. 😀. I am now focusing on gathering data on my fasting insulin and glucose levels to track my HOMA-IR and QUICKI scores along with my triglyceride/HDL ratio and LDL particle sizes. My doctor doubted my efforts when I started this journey, but I now have his full attention (and my own for that matter). He stated at my last visit that if I am able to maintain these results for the long haul that I should write a book! I had to laugh at that and simply responded that there are already hundreds of them written - we just need to get people to read them!😊😊😊
That's awesome! Thanks for sharing your story and way to stay dedicated to improving your health.
You are inspiring! Thank you for sharing.
Muy bien amigo, bravo!
Very amazing results. I just tell everyone because others notice my 40 lb wt loss since February. I too follow this high fat lifestyle but my 2 meal clock is usually 18/6, and OMAD on the weekend. Tons of whole foods, non starchy vegetables, good dairy, every variety of meat/seafood. Zero processed food, no processed oils, no rice/pasta, rare 1/2 slice bread, some wild rice, every raw nut and seed.
Ha I read the part about you suspecting that big pharma and mega food are a main issue in your life just as I was listening to him talking about firefighters vs arsonists!! And I hear you on having made so many changes that it’s hard to tease out what is responsible for what benefits. So I’m glad scientists are studying this stuff now, as well as calling out the bad science that was responsible for previous generations of diet and medication advice.
My experience with LDL and A1C is somewhat unbelievable.
I had high total cholesterol (225) and high triglyceride (325) measured after eating good breakfast (I should have not done that) and my A1C was 6.4. My doctor put me on rosuvastatin 20 mg per day (equal to 40 mg of atorvastatin per day). I became quite sick, weak and plenty of muscle pain. My A1C went up to 6.4 from 5.9. I put on 8 pounds. During those days, I used to eat rice (once), bread and some fruits (2-3 types) daily and some meat (on and off) and two eggs. It is quite possible that I am very sensitive to Rosuvastatin.
6 months later, my total cholesterol went down to 120 (LDL was 69), HDL went up by 30% (40), triglyceride was 63 and my A1C dropped to 5.4 (all measured after 14 hour of fasting). I lost 8 pounds. What did I do differently?
I reduced rosuvastatin by taking 5 mg every alternate day (that is like 2.5 mg per day) and I stopped eating any added sugar. I eat twice a day now (lunch and dinner and eat absolutely NOTHING in between). I reduced my carb intake by 50%, stopped eating FRUITS completely (fructose in fruits is BAD), increased my protein content (120 gm per day; chicken, two whole eggs, some cheese) and take approximately 4 teaspoon of good oil such as olive oil and avocado oil. I significantly increased vegetables like green stuff (twice a day). I eat a mixture of nuts (walnut, pumpkin seed, flax seed, almonds, peanuts) once a day. I walk 30 minutes everyday, indoor bike for 20 minutes and that is it. I do my best to keep active most of the time (rather than sit for hours etc) by doing household stuff etc. I started avoiding stressful situation as much as possible by not reacting to every little stupid things in life. I have more energy than what I had 20 years ago. I don't get irritated much now. I sleep better. My focus is better. I hardly get tired now. My resting heart rate is very normal now. I am thinking of stopping rosuvastatin once I talk to my doctor next month.
I will add resistance training (three times a week) to my routine. And I am a 65 year old person.

Statins are nothing but drug company marketing! I am 69 and have tried them all and did a great deal of study on statins and found the whole thing is a disgusting money making farce that does you no good whatsoever. The only people that statins have a slight benefit is those with FH. Get off them and live better and longer. Drug companies are vile and immoral.
Looks like the High Fat Low Calorie diet is working wonderfully for you.
Keep it going ✓
Just a technical note: Hb1C does not change after meals. It is a measure of the "sugar pressure" in the past 3-4 months. Although a good indicator of insulin resistance, it can vary a lot over time, so testing every 3 months is a must. Another relevant test for insulin resistance is HOMA-IR (search the internet).
Thank you for your story. I will look to adopt some of these as well.
I was a P.T. For 50 years. I saw rhabdomyolosis (acute muscle wasting) frequently and it was always caused by statins. One saving grace for patients is that they usually feel like crap and they quit statins on their own.
Thanks for the feedback.
ty so much for the comment..I knew it was not my imagination when I noticed a change in my body composition after starting statins after my stent..my doctor said that I was doing well because my weight was very steady, but I knew the weight was changing from losing muscle while gaining fat and I prided myself on my training..when I noticed that my weight load was going down instead of up, I threw the statins in the garbage and am back on track after 6 mos. statin free..Thank you !

Good to hear. My own cardiologist claims wasting happens to only one in a thousand people. I think one in ten is closer to the truth.

Just yesterday , after being low carb for two months , I had blood work done . My doctor went nuts . All of my markers were great but my total cholesterol was 300 . He's shure I have familial high cholesterol and am going to drop dead this week . High pressure terror tactics for high intensity statins.. He didn't bat an eye at any of the rest of the data but told me I must take statins because I was " so healthy " and If I wanted to stay that way I needed to take them .
It's a wonder we're not all dead from modern medicine .
In case you're wondering , I'm not going on the meds . Thank you for saying that a person without familial cholesterol could have a score of 300 on low carb . He got to me enough that I didn't sleep well last night . Thanks to this video I'll sleep better .
Curious what your breakdown was ? I just had bloodwork done yesterday after being carnivore for about 4-5 months . I’m down 65 lbs and normal BP and other symptoms from my lung disease have settled .
My total was like 286 and my LDL is 236 now
Back in May my total was 123 while on a statin and in bad health . I went off the statin on August along with being on carnivore .
Oh my gosh. I’m at 388 total, 300 ldl low TG low A1C high HDL and he said I was the highest cholesterol he’s ever seen in his entire career and the fact I haven’t had an adverse cardiac event by now is incredible….I’m 70 and as I get older it has gone up. He tried to scare me and it did shake me up. I asked for more advanced testing but he’s sent a script to my pharmacy…I doubt I’ll pick it up.
@@jodyjackson5475Have you had your particle size tested? I’ve high small particle size, which IS risk factor. Think I’ve consumed too much saturated fats/red meats. Gotta know the details of LDL.
Are you say you think the red meat and saturated fats contribute to the small particles? I’m curious as to why?
@@donnacharles7348 I haven't had the particle size tested. I live in a rural area. Our health care options are very limited. Out medical professionals are not cream of the crop . The thing that strikes me about my cholesterol situation is that my mom's siblings have very high cholesterol and out of eight only one is no longer living . He died of a heart attack but was a lifelong smoker and serious alcoholic . The rest are alive and well without statins .
My aunt is a rep for statins but refuses to take them . She told me " don't take those . They will kill you ."
My weight and health story is very similar to those of others. I'm 5'6", 57 years old. I weighed 155 when I completed my undergrad in 1987. In June 2021, my weight had climbed to 220 lbs, mostly due to working from home due to COVID (less activity and spending too much time a few steps away from the refrigerator). My family doctor told me that I was morbidly obese, and that hit me between the eyes. That day, I decided to change my lifestyle. At first, I was going to do the usual low-fat, calorie-restriction diet. But, I knew that that would ultimately be a failure, long term, because it always is. I did some research and decided to go low-carb (ketogenic). At first, I thought I'd just do it to lose weight then switch to something else, maybe Mediterranean, but then as I learned more, I realized that low-carb is a very sustainable, healthy, life-long dietary option. Along the way, I also incorporated restricted eating (18:6 or 20:4 daily) and periodic multi-day fasts. I absolutely loved the fasts, coupled with low carb and absolutely no sugars or starches. At the beginning of July 2021, I weighed 220. A week before Christmas 2021, I weighed 150... less than my college weight. I had been pre-diabetic, high-blood pressure, high cholesterol. After losing the weight, my A1C is 4.5, my BP is usually 115/70. Great HLD and triglycerides and am Pattern A lipids. But, my LDL is high (not surprisingly), and my doc wants to put me back on a Statin. We're going to have a very long conversation about that, and I doubt VERY seriously that he'll be able to convince me to go back on a statin again. I may even be looking for a new GP, who is knowledgeable of the low-carb lifestyle.

Intermittent fasting. 18:6, most days. Result. 16% reduction in weight, BP in your range, sugar in the normal range. All metabolic markers good. Only exception is LDL which runs slightly higher.

I've been following Dr Ali for 5 years now, and I continue to be impressed. It can't be easy to push a narrative which flies in the face of 'conventional' medicine. Thanks, Dr. Ali, and Dr. Nolte!
I recently had my first physical after doing a low carb / high protein / intermittent fasting diet for a couple years. Within 30 sec of sitting down the Dr. brought up my "very concerning" high cholesterol and how I needed to go on a statin prescription ASAP. I politely declined, but the training was so ingrained that this one number is somehow so devastating to my health... yet literally every other indicator available pointed to me being perfectly fit. I am the perfect example of what Dr. Ali is describing here. I used to have high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high sugar levels, a fatty liver - and now all of that is reversed and I am in the best shape of my life... and my LDL is high.
Exactly the same as my story at 67 in the UK. All tests brilliant except ldl so doctor pushing for statins.
Exactly the same for me here in Australia. I haven’t been back to the doctor for 2 years now because of being so annoyed with her. I had eliminated all other risk factors - obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, but that meant nothing to her as my LDL had increased. My HDL was high and Triglyceride’s very low. It’s very frustrating dealing with these doctors just stuck on that statin wheel.
Same for me in Pakistan.
I’ve been doing low carb, sometimes ketosis for 8 months. My A1C went from 7.1 to 4.9. HDL 55 TRIG 83 but LDL went up 230. Must be healing! Prior my TRIG were 200s and HDL 27! Thank you high fat diet!
Incredibly compelling interview. Loved it.
Wow! I just so love listening to Dr. Ali. He's a gem! Such class 🙏🏻
He really is! So smart and humble.
I am listening to this right before I go to the doctors and him advocating to put me on a statin due to my high fat low carb diet and my LDL being high, a high HDL and very low triglycerides. Wish me luck!
Good luck! Remember there are a lot of other indicators of your heart health you can share with your doctor. I list them on this blog post: www.weightlossforhealth.com/blog/dr-nadir-ali-ldl-cholesterol-low-carb-diet-risks-of-statins
Oh thank you!!
Oh gosh thank you!! I will plan to show this to multiple doctors. They don’t have time to read research papers and needed something condense to even look at. Bless you!! I have zero risk factors right now according to the list.
How did it go ? Statins, or no Statins ??
If your HDL is high and Trigs low it is likely that you have predominately large LDL. The concensus seems to be that it's the small LDL that we need to worry about. An LDL subtraction test would confirm that for you as it did for me. But it is unlikely that your doctor will order it for you. He'll probably say as mine did that the results wouldn't change his Statin recommendation. All they know is that a high LDL=Statin.
This video is 1 yr old but am so glad I found it. It is truely a timeless video worth watching again and again.

My doctor told me today I MUST start taking statins, but after I watched your video, I decided to postpone that decision of my doc. I feel perfectly well, with plenty of energy, walking between 15-18 km every day, and my Hb A1c is 5,1. I am 70 years old, doing OMAD and life is just easy 🥳 blessings ❤ 🙏

Dr Nadir Ali explains this so brilliantly even I could follow it (made notes too!) My GP is saying my cholesterol is "too high" but there is no way I want statins, so this helps me to know what I can do about drilling down into the mechanisms involved. I need to find out more about 'small dense LDL' now. So much to learn...
Excellent information. So helpful for us out here who have Docs that are so set in their ways.

At my last doctor visit my blood was drawn & it came back high cholesterol. The office called and told me the doctor submitted a Statin prescription for me. There was no conversation about let’s make some diet changes get exercise, ect. My family has been brow beating me to start the med’s. All the research & exhausted time I have been putting into what is best for me does not point to jump on the medication ban wagon. I’am working on lowering my weight healthy style, getting more active. Thank you at this time for validating to me that first I can make some significant changes before just leaping to a drug. Should calcium score be a standard part of the coronary profile, so it can be considered in assessing reasons for adverse changes in health conditions?
Really good to hear from Dr. Ali. Hope other cardiologist also think the same.
Thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed this interview.
When Dr. Nadir Ali speaks - I listen. Great interview.
Thanks! What was your biggest takeaway from this interview?
@@drmorgannolte Lots of useful information. My biggest takeway as a lean low-craber whose LDL went sky-high is:
a. It's actually common in lean individuals on a very low carb diet.
b. This cholesterol number is a choice, and can be lowered quickly when changing diet.
c. Very high serum LDL in a metabolically healthy individual on a VLC diet is probably not deleterious at all.
@@zealous.y Awesome takeaways, so glad you shared!
This was very helpful and super interesting too. Thank you so much for sharing it and I can’t wait for your next video, Dr. Morgan 😊

Great interview! I wish it didn't have advertising interruptions. I love the way Dr. Nadir Ali uses clear metaphors to explain Cholesterol; for those of us who are not from the medical world but are interested in understanding our potential health issues. Some doctors' knowledge is from old data and it is worrying as a patient that it has not been updated. Hence why these videos are crucial for us!

Great video. Many are in the dilemma of having high CAC scores. (73 year old female). In my struggle to lower my A1C I have landed on a carnivore diet and this has increased dramatically my LDL. After many years of being off a statin I tried again using them and within 2 weeks I had difficulty walking due to tendinitis. I think there are many of us in this boat. We come to the crossroads of having to decide which is better: eating high carb and experiencing type 2 diabetes or eating low carb and watching your LDL stay elevated. 🤷♀️
This doctor is so easy to follow.
Thanks for watching and the positive feedback!
Very very helpful. Thank you. I just had HDL-74, Trig-66, but LDL-246. Been keto then carnivore for a year and feel better than ever. My doctor was really confused.

Not nerdy at all! Love how you make it easy to understand. Thank you so much! My vegan doctor says highest of any of her patients ever recommends statins but I refused. Doing a coronary artery calcification test to make sure I am ok but may have to change doctors if she refuses to understand ldl is not the enemy. Love your interview!❤

Thank you for this interview. I recently went on the keto diet and lost 23 lbs in 3 1/2 months. I had some lab work done at a doctors appointment and all the labs were fine except my LDL according to my doctor. He prescribed a statin and since I don't trust the medical establishment I started looking for information about keto diet and high LDL. It feels good to take responsibility and control over my health and do my own research.
This is super amazing for those of us with very high number, yet healthy with 0 calcium build up, no insulin resistance and such.

This video is pure gold! I exhibited all the symptoms after losing 35lbs on a low carb high fat moderate protein diet and my ldl and total cholesterol levels skyrocketed after cutting out all the fast food. Thank you so much for posting this! In the last year I went from 217 pounds at 5'7" 37 year old female to 154 lbs. My fasting glucose last year was 113 and it is now 86. My total cholesterol last year was 230 and it is now 215. My triglycerides last year was 114 and is now 49. My HDL last year was 51 and is now 52. My LDL last year was 156.7 and is now 153. 6 months ago my total cholesterol was 188. My LDL was 125.6, HDL 49, and Triglycerides was 68. My HR went from 73 last year to 59. I am now normal BMI. 6 months ago my doc told me she wouldn't bother me about cholesterol meds anymore but then I got the letter from my last appointment telling me to eat a low fat and heart healthy diet. I was worried. I mean I've lost 63 pounds in a year. Corrected my blood sugar, and had my cholesterol corrected so I thought (and now think again lol). I also had an EGFR of 59.1 last year and now have an EGFR of 84. Here I am hearing that a plant based/low protein diet is good for my kidneys and cholesterol but on the other hand, high protein and fat is good for my blood sugar. It's so freaking confusing! I am doing the absolute best I can and one doc or another will say I'm doing it wrong. This video shows me that I did everything right. I did also have a lot more beef in the last two weeks before my labs than I usually do yet my kidney function is still normal. I'm not going to hear I need to go on statins simply because my LDL fluctuated only 27.4 points. Sounds like that beef did me a favor after all.
IMHO you did excellent! An absolute inspiration!

Is your weight stable? If you are still losing, a lot of doctors understand that your cholesterol levels are not stable at this point until you remain at approx. the same weight for several weeks. Last I heard it was 8 -12 weeks.
@@lisaa8795 my weight was not stable at that point. I was still slowly losing weight. I have remained roughly 154 since then. But am aiming to lose 5 more pounds. I hope to have my weight stable well before my next appointment in October. Hopefully this helps with my cholesterol. Thank you for that information.
High fat and protein can be hard on kidneys. See a nephrologist. You might need to add a tiny bit more carbs. But check with kidney specialist.
I was hoping Dr. Ali would address the types of LDL molecules: Type A being the big fluffy ones that carry triglycerides out of the liver, hence there are more of them In the blood doing their job; vs. type B, small LDL molecules that can penetrate the arterial walls and create the plaque buildup that causes the heart problems…
Hi Ann, the LDL particle size is discussed more in my interview with Dr. Benjamin Bikman, and Dr. Bikman also does a great job describing this in his book Why We Get Sick.
He did, search his RUclips videos.
Good question and good answer
Thank you both- a great conversation. Just when I was showing dramatic improvements in my health from low carb and If, my LDL shot up (doubled) and my doctor has been insisting that I take statin. Although he has good intentions, I declined thanks because I was equipped with doubts -thanks to people like Dr. Ali. I refused-and I asked my doctor for CAC and it came out to be zero. I am glad Dr. Ali mentioned that during his talk. I feel much better-because my doctor sort of scared me about refusing to take statins.

what was your CAC the first time or was 0 the first test?
May i know what CAC means?
@@V.N.nathan it's a test to measure the calcium in the arteries which is the "real" danger if so or the more accurate indicator for cardiovascular disease risk ☺️
Same here. I’ve taken the Calcium Score (aka coronary cat scan w contrast) text 2x, Zero blockages. On low carb my LDL is 132; Triglycerides 39 & HDL 62. Total Chol is 201. My GP suggested a Statin, I declined. She has no experience w low carb diets.

It doesn't matter what the situation is, the answer to "should you take a statin?" is NO!
Take niacin.
I have a great interview coming out later in October with Dr. Michael Twyman. He said that in most circumstances statins would not be recommended, but it is an individual decision that should be well weighted against pros/cons and other lifestyle changes, supplements, medications. Ideally this decision is made in collaboration with a cardiologist after further testing than just "high cholesterol."
Thank you so much for providing all this information to us.

Brilliant, brilliant conversation. I am on low carb style and 16/8 IF over the last months, feeling better than ever. Weight loss, more focus, better skin, all blood markers improved (and LDL raised as explained in the video). More and more people should now that sometimes the 'academic' model does not tell the full truth. Thanks Dr Nolte 👍
How low carb are you?
Interesting interview. In March of 2022 the JAMA published research (comparing over 100,000 people in various studies) and the conclusion was that treating high LDL with statin medication had no clinical benefit to the patient. In other words, statins... which lowered LDL cholesterol, didn't do anything to reduce risk of death, heart attack or stroke. So, it seems many people have been going through horrible statin side effects for absolutely no health benefit.

Thank you for citing that JAMA study. I found it online and it tracks. Its meta analysis shows some VERY minor risk reduction from one view and inconclusive evidence of benefit in others. The article recommends that doctors start telling their patients this information so patients can properly weigh the risks of taking statins in the face of little to no actual benefit. Great article.

I find Dr. Nadir Ali's anecdotal and observational theories to be fascinating and interesting. The high LDL and normal markers of everything else rings true to me, it is true at least to my last blood tests. I'm glad that he included examples from his patients. But I also would to see study sources included in the description of videos that claim this and that studies stated X, Y and Z.
Dr. Peter Attia has a great blog series called The Straight Dope on Cholesterol if you want to Google it, he has references in there that back Dr. Ali's reports.
I would have liked to have had more reasons to go on a statin in spite of all the negatives discussed. I just stopped statins after over forty years of use and have been on a keto diet for over two years. I was also able to get off BO Rx and lost a good 30#! I am chagrined to learn all this info on nutrition and statins after being a primary care MD since 1981.
