- To celebrate 11 years in the Navy and Social Work Appreciation Month, I wanted to share what it's like being an active duty US Navy Social Worker. We have such a unique job that's so versatile and changes every day! This is 100% based from my personal experiences -- in no way do I speak on behalf of the Navy or DOD.
We plan to put out some more videos on military life, moves, etc. Here's the playlist so far. Have anything you'd like us to cover? Let us know in the comments down below!

So interesting. It's cool that you got to try so many different areas. Thanks for sharing!
It was definitely an amazing experience -- I love how many different hats SW wears!
Hey! I am pursuing my MSW and I am very interested in navy social work. Would love to connect with you! I loved hearing your story and advice to oncoming social workers.
Hi, i am so sorry for not responding sooner! I got attached to a ship and between that and having two little ones, I have been on a long hiatus! How has your journey been so far?
Yes I’d like a warm blanket 🥰 wow you have a lot of jobs and you are so kind to do this job. Social workers are true blessings 😊Jenn
Omgosh they are the best! They're kept in this warmer thing that's like super effing toasty!!! I want for my house lol! And ^.^ we just love helping and giving back to society in some way ♡♡♡
LOVE IT. Look like you're at Balboa. Look forward to seeing you out in the fleet doing great things. Love your energy lady!!!
I'm a active duty Chief with a MSW, I be applying for the fellowship this year 🤗
I'm a SARP Counselor
That's amazing! And you got it right ^.^ I feel so lucky to have been able to do my fellowship at Balboa! I was also over at SARP Point Loma not too long ago and it was amazing! I hope you get selected! Our last two selectees were SARP Counselors and they are absolutely incredible! ♡
So noble, and it must be hard to separate work from home (like not bringing events/thoughts from the day home). Thank you for doing the hard work
It definitely can be and takes a lot of practice! I think the hardest things so far have been 1. Meeting the patient where they're at because sometimes the answer is so clear but they have to be the ones to get there, we can't just feed it to them and 2. Holding space for them. I've been screamed at and barrated and sometimes the patient just needs to get it out and the best thing I can do for them is let them and then empathize with them 🥰
Thank you for sharing this video. I just seen a job listing for a Navy Social Worker and wanted more information before I applied. I think it’s so interesting that you still have to wear a uniform and do the PT testing 😨
Absolutely! Yeah Navy will always come before social work but it definitely can cause issues, particularly for clients who have problems with rank since all navy social workers are active duty. There's also watch that we have to do (OOD/CDO), and extra collateral duties like social assault prevention or command managed equal opportunity. 😅 but there are also civilian social workers who work for the department of the navy so that would be different :)
Going back through and realized I had not seen this video! It is crucial that these men and women serving our country are helped through such difficult moments/times.
Your position is so very involved. Am so glad you enjoy your work and I am sure that all those you help truly appreciate it😊
Thank you 🥰🥰🥰 that means so much!! I'm glad I can help out even just a little bit
Loved hearing your story! I am also a Social Worker! A hard job...but can be very rewarding. Happy Social Work Appreciation Month! New friends here! -Ali 😍🍷
Happy Social Work Appreciation Month!!! 😁 It's always amazing to meet a fellow Social Worker! It really is so crazy how hard we work but the outcome is usually 100% worth it!!! 🥰❤ thank you for everything you do!!!
Dang Jess! You've been so productive!! I'm so happy and proud of you! Long ways from our cubicle farm yay!!
It's been so chaotic!!! Im so excited to get out of student status!!! And haha omgosh yeah! So far from there! I do miss our banana bread competition though 😂 and the breakfast biscuits!!!
I have my LCSW and have been looking into Navy SW
Hi! We have an amazing community and are all very close. There's so many cool things Navy Social Workers do from shore duty to deploying with Marines and now going to sea on subs and carriers.
Hi Jess & Jakii, 1st off, thank you so much for this vid. Such an awesome insight to see what you do on a daily. This is one of my long-term goals (Navy SW). Looking forward to more vids...
Absolutely! Yeah it's so hard to try and summarize a life in AD USN SW since it changes so much but I'm glad that this helped! That would be so incredible! We are a growing community that demand respect from our fellow MH shipmates and are finally starting to get it 😁 Let me know if you end up having any questions! More mil videos will be coming out soon but they're going to be mainly focused on our move 🥳
@@JessandJakii Awesome! So I just found out from the Navy Med Recruiter that I have to work on my LCSW prior to putting in a packet. To be honest, I'm kind of bummed out about this. I was hoping I could do my LCSW while serving on AD but I guest not LOL! Anyways, if I have any specific questions, I won't hesitate to ask. Looking forward to new content and hearing back from you. Happy Easter Egg Day from Guam!
@@JessandJakii Hi Jess & Jaki, Hope all is well, and thank you again for this "day in the life of an AD NSW" vid. So informative. Can you please share any new updates? What has life been like as an Active Duty Navy Social Worker stationed in Japan? What does your typical day look like from the time you leave home to the time you arrive?
Hello Ma’am. I am so glad you made this video. I’ve been working on my degree in order to put in for a MSC-IPP package to be a social worker. Do you have any recommendations or tips?
I have a bachelors of humanities with minors in history and sociology. I just started a 6 year navy nuke enlistment at age 28, but what I'm really wanting to do is Navy Social Work. When I end my AD contract in 2031, I'll be 34. At that point, I'll start the 4-year process to get my MSW and LCSW, then attempt to return to service as a social worker. Is there anything in particular that makes a Social Work candidate competitive?
I look dumb while working out too! I hate mirrors but my form is usually off so I have to use them..
You're so strong!!! I'd rather get kicked out for bad form than look at myself haha!
can i transfer from the army to the navy as a SW?
Hey there! I loved your video!! I’m thinking about working alongside my boyfriend in the navy as a SW, but I do have a few questions for you! 1) can you be a civilian and work on base as a SW? If so, what is the process of doing so? 2) do you have to be commissioned to work for fleet & family, or can I be a civilian for that as well? I talked to him about it and he said I would have to be careful about the whole commissioning side of it because it could really mess with what he wants to do for when he commissions (aviation). Thank you in advance!!
Hi! I am so sorry for taking so long to get back to you -- I got put on a ship and between that and the chaos of having two littles, I've been MIA.
You absolutely can work as a civilian through Fleet and Family Service Center or also as an MFLC. Jobs are available at USAjob.com ^.^ you can also become a DRC or an EPIC and work on the ships
Hoping to be a Navy Social Worker in the future did 4 years in the Marine Corps infantry got out got my bachelor's in SW going for Masters's next (thanks GI bill). Do you have any pointers in actually getting/commissioning in the Navy did you join any programs or did you direct commission? Thank you for this video and for your time.
I did direct commission through MSC-IPP. :) I think the best advice I can offer is keep applying every chance you get and stock up at my as you can on leadership and volunteer opportunities.
Hi!! I’m applying for the navy clinical social work fellowship as well! Did you go from enlisted or civilian? I have interviews coming up soon and want to feel more prepared!
Do you know of any ways to get into Navy Social Work with just an MSW? Do they commission civilians for the internship programs?
Thank you!
Hi! I’m an officer in the navy too! I had some questions for you about social work. Is there any way I can contact you?
Thank you for your video. I have my MSW already, but am not an LCSW. I was wondering are we able to apply for the navy social work fellowship program as a civilian or must we go the enlisted route?
How long did the board take to get back to you about being selected??? I've heard a lot.
Hi! I'm about to finish my BSW and i'm really thinking about going with this route. I want my MSW but is there any way to do this while doing day-to-day work? I always wanted to do a navy thing but i'm getting older (36). I've always thought doing a navy thing would be super cool if i could be on a boat or a sub or something like that.
MSW is what i'd like to do and LCSW as well. Ideally i'd like to do field stuff until i can move back to research. I'm already certified in Colorado to do social work research but i still have no idea what im doing. haha. I would rather do military social work like this while i work my way into a university postion or private practice some day. Is it possible to work on an MSW and is it possible to get an LCSW?
i'd like a blanket 🥺
There's nothing more magical than a blanket or something cozy 🥰
Do Navy social workers deploy or serve at sea or is it just shore?
Hi! We have actually become more operational recently and just started having LCSW's onboard of Aircraft Carriers and Submarines ⚓️
Amazing video! Thank you. I recently got my MSW and LMSW and am researching where to go for employment. I feel like I am in the same boat as you, I got my bachelors in psychology, and had an in interest in clinical psychology, but chose Social work due to its versatility and short time to get a degree and due clinical work!:).
Do you know if there is a need or growing need for bilingual social workers in the navy or other military branches? More specifically, bilingual in Spanish/English? Thank you.
There is always a need for sure and it would look great to be able to out that in your package. Unfortunately, they don't pay extra for Spanish like they would mission critical languages like Chinese, Russian, Arabic, etc. That would be exciting to get to work together one day! Navy Social Work community is small but mighty and we are always evolving to meet new mission needs. Within thr last 3 years, they just started making more of our jobs forward deployed. And the jobs are so versatile. I work mainly with V codes, domestic violence, child abuse, and follow up on suicidal clients. One of my clients work with Z codes, another in the inpatient psych ward, one on thr waterfront, etc. There's so many interesting places to go but, if we are being completely honest, Air Force has better quality of life. Regardless, Navy is always better than Army, so Go Navy, Beat Army haha
@@JessandJakii Thank you so much for your insight and support! :) Sorry for the late reply. You have shared with me so much regarding
the role of a social worker in the Navy, I am very grateful. At the moment I am still researching and gathering more information about the different
military branches and options available to me, and am very excited at the possibilities!
When you have a chance, how did you apply for your social work fellowship? Did you need to have an LCSW or did you have an LMSW? You might have answered this, but just double checking. Thank you in advance.
Thank you for sharing your experiences! Im sure you’ll do great at your next duty station. I’m actually AD right now (AO1) and enrolled in an online MSW program. I’m at a point where I am having difficulty being able to get my practicum hours completed! Were you an HM before commissioning? Or how did you get your hours completed?
Thank you! :) I was a CTI before this and went through the MSCIPP program. At the time they had the option to do both MSW and Internship. When I was stationed in San Diego, they had options for students to do practicum hours in the social work office :) You might be able to find something if you check with any closeby military hospitals or ffsc/etc.
Such a great video. How exactly did you begin your fellowship/gain commissioning In the navy?
Thank you! I was fortunate enough to be selected through MSCIPP for both the internship and MSW. I don't believe they offer the same program anymore but have just the internship for Sailors with their MSWs.
Jess thanks for making this video
I received an offer after an application process to enter through commission. I have been inpatient psych for the past 5 years and have done a little bit of everything in that field. One thing I was unsure about was what other roles/jobs do you fulfill outside of social work? During my application the officers I spoke with indicated us having to supervise/run drills, trainings etc.....what does that look like?
Also what are your thoughts on doing this with a family? I'm unsure what it will look like regarding having family travel with me part time or full time.... we have 2 kiddo's 6 month and 4 yo.
Hi there! That's definitely true -- we are responsible for way more than our job description when commissioned. For example, at my current duty station, I am responsible for 20-25 hours of clinical work, traffic court judge 1x/month, CDO watch (25 hours) 3x/month (responding to any tragedy/domestic disputes/unorderedly behavior/anything you can think of), am in change of 20 sailors and civilians, liason between the hospital and my facility, in charge of multiple psychoeducation groups, am in charge of a program that sets up sponsorship/responds to families/sailors during times of crisis (such as if a ship crashes), can be called out to deploy/go underway/respond to emergency psychiatric needs worldwide at any time, have to take fitness tests 2x/year, multiple annual trainings, and group physical fitness 2-3x/week. It sounds like a lot but it's pretty normal haha. I think there's a decent work-life balance if you strive for it but it's also very easy to get caught up. I'm extremely family oriented and take advantage of every opportunity to be with my wife and haven't had any issues. Military also has TONS of support systems for dependents :) hope this helped!
@@JessandJakii Holy smokes!! That is insane stacking the clinical work with all that other stuff! When you mention being in charge on 20 sailors/civilians what does that entail? Do you do a lot of inpatient work? LASTLY have you gone underway/on ship for extended period of times?
@@JessandJakii Thank you so much for your reply. My asthma will probably trash can my offer (received the offer but have asthma......even though I'm in great shape for a younger guy.
I work at the Fleet and Family so we focus on V Codes and send people to Mental Health over at the hospital for F Codes. My base also doesn't have inpatient capabilities so they are sent to San Diego if need be. But when I worked in inpatient as one of my rotations, I was just a glorified case manager. I hated it. Most active duty end up being therapists of some variety in either outpatient, inpatient, or acute settings. Also, I've never been pulled to a ship before, but a LCDR I worked with almost was to help with COVID response in 2020. He has since resigned but he had only been given a 24 hour heads up.
Also not 100% sure what being in charge entails yet. I'm still checking in but I'll have a better idea starting next week. I imagine it's likely just administrative work.
@@JessandJakii So interesting! I am an LCSW as well with military experience interested in getting into the Navy. What would be the best way to contact you to ask more specific questions about my path and get your advice?
Ma'am,
Did you have your full LCSW prior to recruitment or have you participated in the HSCP (Health Services Collegiate Program) as an LCSW-A?
Very respectfully,
I went through MSCIPP to earn my MSW and internship. Unfortunately I'm not too familiar with HSCP but I would definitely check! We have a lot of vacancies for SW that are slowly getting filled 😁
@@JessandJakii Ma'am,
Thank you for responding. I have checked and learned more about HSCP, but learned that they do not have a quota for this year for navy social workers. I do not know anybody who went through the HSCP.
However, this gives me hope for next year. I am waiting for the recruiter to get a quota update. Prayerfully, I will be able to start on a packet soon.
Very respectfully,
Did you ever see combat ?
No, fortunately only a small number of my community ever will! The Army is more likely to become involved in that.
Does the navy RESERVE offer social work opportunities?
I'm actually not sure because the SW community is going through a series of cuts and additions and more cuts and changes. It's been pretty turbulent but it may be good to reach out to a recruiter to see what they have to say :)
Going in as a social worker soon. Need advice on first duty station. Do you have social media??
