it's not even on the table. the hospital refuses to set ratios because it will open the door for ratios in the whole state which includes other hph hospitals
I was involved in a 3 week strike. When you walk off the job, employers can impose a lockout & hire replacements. Hope the nurses weren’t told by their union that this wasn’t a possibility.
One day walkout was a tactic, to make things difficult for the employer & to use as leverage in negotiations while only losing one day of pay. But a walkout makes you subject to a lockout, which the hospital decided to do.
My baby and I are alive because of nurses at Kapiolani. HELLP syndrome is no joke. They got my baby and I through a very difficult birth. I'm not the only person who can say this about their experience at Kapiolani. The nurses are walking out because the lack of staff is causing burnout, and this is happening all over the mainland, too. They cannot do the job without the proper staffing. Lots of highly experienced people are leaving the medical profession, too. Maternal and infant mortality rates are increasing in the United States because of lack of staffing and low quality doctors and nurses just entering the profession only for paychecks. People need to know before hating on these nurses. We would not be here without them. Hawaii cannot afford to lose highly skilled medical personnel. Wahine and their keiki need excellent nursing care. It's not optional.
They say it is not about money. Cut their hours and pay. Then we will see their true colors. That nurse leader thinks she's brave heart, and she will lead you to fail. $160K for 3 days of work per week, lol. High paid medical assistants at best.
@@kawikadee9670 No, the other nurses are grown adults with a medical degree, they made their decision to follow her, they’re accountable and responsible for their own decisions and actions.
Boy howdy....Personally, I wouldn't want someone like her taking care of me nor a loved one. Unions have no good business in healthcare. When it's all about you it's not about the people you are caring for. I don't know how many hours I GAVE because I cared. The so-called nurses these days are an embarressment....-A retired CNA/RA
I think the lock out is good. Strike until the deal is done and the ink has dried on the contract. Either the hospital buckles or the nurses' union buckle. However, remember, a compromise is when neither party really gets what they want. So, don't hold out to claim unconditional victory and chest thumping.
One sentence to summarize this strike…… nurses want easy workload (more staff) and more pay using patient safety to gain public support. At the end it’s the public/tax payers financing their greed.
Nurses got played by their union leader like sheep. Got too greedy while wanting to do less work. I wonder if they can even hold out and pay bills once next month hits. Doubt this strike even gets support.
Well I mean all the union members that pay the dues for the union r fired as a result so they better keep fight8ng lol they got no choice now or the union will be disbanded
These nurses got me trippin. They walked out for 24 hours and now acting like you guys ready to work? I’m a patient who struggled on Friday with the birth of my son all because of their strike. I’m personally happy that they got locked up because if they were all for the patients, they would be there for the patients and it’s not like they don’t have 4 days off every week for them to voice their opinions. Don’t walk out on a job and be expected to be welcomed back with open arms 🤦🏻♂️
I’ve been here in the ICU for over 3 weeks and these nurses put everything into their jobs. They did more than simple nursing tasks. They had to keep track of multiple rooms and comfort families who just found out their child was diagnosed with cancer. They were out there fighting for the safety of the patients. Better nurse to patient ratios means they have more time to help you in your room without having to leave all the time to check on other patients - and in an ER or ICU setting that’s really important. I’m sorry you didn’t get to experience how amazing they are. The hospital brought in transplants who don’t even come close to the care and aloha our local nurses give. They took ONE day to band together and fight for what’s safe and right for patients and families and they got locked out for speaking up. The hospital is in the wrong here. They keep trying to throw money and short work weeks at them saying they are giving them a “good deal” - keep in mind they are working 12+ hr shifts (they are full time workers). It’s not about the money, it’s about patient safety - when nurses are overworked and overbooked that’s when mistakes can happen - the hospital is being negligent
Sorry that happened to you but You don’t know what you’re talking about. Try working 12 hour shifts with no break when you have a bunch of active labor patients ready to deliver.

Union is screwing over the workers. If your just saying not for the money but more staffing then common sense is right out the door. Also, are there cases of incidents at the hospital because of under staffing? This would solidified your case.
I would think there must be a national standard of care guideline that specifies nurse to patient ratio guidelines based on type of care required? Is the claim that the standards aren't being followed?

Illegal? Really? Union boss is misguiding these nurses. When the boss asks you to do something you have choices. Kapiolani offered options. These nurses made their choice and now they face the consequences. "At will" employment... go figure.
It won’t last. The hospital will not be able to afford a temp workforce for long and the patients will suffer due to this. If you compare wages and hours on the mainland to here healthcare workers are underpaid.
