It is a marriage of the the old, with Brother Claude Ely’s original chorus and the new, my personal testimony of overcoming fear and shame, woven into each verse. For me, this song is steeped in the reality of Jesus and what He has done for me and my community.
This is an anthem for ANYONE who is ready to follow Jesus and walk out of the graves in their daily life. “Ain’t No Grave” is a testimony of faith, a song for those who are ready to shake off the victim mentality and stand up in the truth of who they really are.“

Claude Ely, a songwriter and preacher from Virginia, describes composing the song while sick with tuberculosis in 1934 when he was twelve years old. His family prayed for his health, and in response, he spontaneously performed this song.......I have had cancer 4 times and still, God has a purpose for me PTL!!!

Being from the very far northeast tip of Appalachia Tennessee and having a family with a deep history in singing the traditional music, this right jerks at the very core of my soul.
Lost the most precious gift in my life…my Mother. Lord, how she loved Jesus. I know she is as free as a cageless bird now and at His Feet. Played this at her funeral. I’ll miss you Mommy. This music video makes me miss Washington State! This is my favorite version of the song because of the old folksy/country vibe and the vocals are well suited to the vibe. Lastly, I love the imagery of the water going backwards. I kind of wish there was more imagery of backwards moving things, just to hammer in the fact that death had been reversed when Jesus resurrected, and that death is not an end for believers!

I’m a Strong Faith’d believer that’s almost 60 now...I miss the old gospel hymns of my childhood growing up in a Pentecostal Church ⛪. Appreciate Brother Claude Ely for the title "Ain't no Grave Gonna Hold Me Down" Thank God for bluegrass Southern gospel roots. Authentic Real Worship.
My 100 yr old mother-in-law is in hospital with chronic vein ischemic, veins in leg collapsing, little blood flow. Next stage they amputate. She's a Christian worship dancer and did flags intercession. She was classically trained in the first American Ballet Company she also was a ballet dancer in the the Metropolitan Opera all in New York City. When times were really bad and desperate she danced as a rockette. Then she injured her leg but always created Christmas Easter and other venues for the church. When she was 50 she became born again and gave her Talent totally to the Lord and it exploded when dance really exploded in the church. I don't want her leaving this world without a leg, but this song really ministered to me because I have been very angry at the incompetence of the doctor in the hospital treating her. So I went to the Mayo Clinic website and found out what they do for her situation and they immediately put her on the medication she was supposed to be on over a week ago when she was in so much pain we had to call an ambulance. They said it takes 3 months to work which is why they didn't put her on it as if they know the future and the doctor was angry because he was called out of a family party on a Saturday and told her she would be losing her leg when she arrived in the hospital she became hysterical and wanted to leave immediately thank God she has my husband who really loves the Lord and is filled with the Holy Spirit by her side 8 to 10 hours a day. Please pray a miraculous recovery so she does not have to lose her leg before this happened she was dancing for the Lord beautifully and anointed. She can sit up out of a prone position just using her stomach muscles, no hands she is in great shape otherwise and I just feel Satan wanting to have his last hurrah over her. In any case Ain't No Grave going to hold her body down want to comfort to know in this terrible time

His answer came in an intuitive urging to simply begin moving. “So,” he recalled, “I started crawling in whatever direction suggested itself, feeling ahead with my hands to guard against plunging over some precipice, just moving slowly and calmly, crablike.” Eventually, Cash felt a gentle, soft breeze and knew that the direction the breeze was flowing from would lead to a way out. Slowly, methodically, he followed the breeze until he began to see light and finally, the opening of the cave.
Amazingly, when he emerged, June Carter and his mother were there with a basket of food and drink. The women told Cash they knew something was wrong and felt led to come and find him.

I started doing this song at my church in 1990's. It has always been beloved by the young generation and the older folks too! I always like to do this song with a hauntingly bluesy style. The Holy Spirit always comes by when we do it. Did it Easter and it brought the house down...

I was at Avoyelles Prison in Cottonport Louisiana around 2004 when I first heard this song. A Full Gospel church would come in a few times out the month. We'd praise and worship together.
