Depero, Balli Plastici. An automata by the Modern Automata Museum

On April 15, 1918, at the Teatro dei Piccoli in Rome, the “Plastic Dances” by Fortunato Depero were staged for the first time, with the scenography of Depero and Gilbert Clavel.
The puppeteers of Luigi Gorno Dall'Acqua animated the “Automata” of the Plastic Balls. In fact, the characters of the Plastic Dances are called Automa-tons but they have been animated like puppets.
The Plastic Dances gave life to the first hypothesis of an automaton theater in the Italian avant-garde theater.
In 1927 Depero wrote that automata are used “to dramatize the stage and to split and multiply a character in its various dimensions”. The characters of the Plastic Dances are the Man with the Mustache, the Dancer, the Giant Mustachioed, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Cat, the Mices and some others.
MAM has created the Automata of Plastic Dances no longer in the form of puppets but in the form of real Automata, creating a mechanical theater of Fortunato Depero's Automata.
Il 15 aprile 1918, al Teatro dei Piccoli di Roma, vanno in scena per la prima volta i “Balli Plastici” di Fortunato Depero, con la scenografia di Depero e Gilbert Clavel.
Ad animare gli “Automi” dei Balli Plastici furono i burattinai di Luigi Gorno Dall'Acqua. Di fatto, i personaggi dei Balli Plastici sono chiamati Automi ma sono stati animati come burattini.
I Balli Plastici diedero vita alla prima ipotesi di un teatro di automi nel teatro d'avanguardia italiano.
Nel 1927 Depero scrive che gli automi servono “per drammatizzare il palcoscenico e per sdoppiare e moltiplicare un personaggio nelle sue varie dimensioni”. I personaggi dei Balli Plastici sono l'Uomo coi Baffi, la Ballerina, i Baffuti Giganti, la Scimmia, il Gallo, il Gatto, il Topo e alcuni altri.
Il MAM ha realizzato gli Automi dei Balli Plastici non più sotto forma di burattini ma sotto forma di veri e propri Automi, creando un teatro meccanico degli Automi di Fortunato Depero.
