Thanks, I'd like win that laptop
I watch everything i can at 2x...i dont have time for normal speed...
I entered a recent dramatic sunset photo, "New Frontiers".
Agree with every tips you gave in this video. I would add to it:
- Slow 5 or 10% zoom in to subtly enhance when a head talk gets more intense.
- Use the luminosity in your favour, if you have an outdoor clip which is bright, place it after an intense darker section or when you need the pace to gets faster again so the edit gets visually dynamic and more interesting.
- if you shot in more than one location and you have any drone footage or a wide angle shot, use it at the end of a chapter applying a slow 10 or 15% zoom out to gently tell the viewers that you are leaving that place and drawing them to the next location.
I Iearned so many things from you these years Matti, thanks!
Question for Matti: How long does an edit take you on average for a simple video like this one? How much time do you budget for yourself, and how often do you finish early?
I just started following you and your content is so helpful!!!! I have naturally always been “good enough” at editing to get the job done and has gotten me this far but I’ve recently been trying to be intentional with learning how to be better & faster and make my edits more meaningful. Especially the longer my content gets! Thank you for all you’re teaching!!!
I love that you're trying to say editing isn't overwhelming and giving fabulous tips that still also make me feel overwhelmed. Ooof it's a lot to learn, but easier on a laptop that doesn't seize up every two seconds. I adore my old zenbook, what a beast it's been but at 7 years old this one sure would make editing my weird solo travels and wild camping and such so much easier.
I believe that the biggest mistake is to stop learning and becoming too complacent. Delve into a section of the tools that you don't normally use. Maybe there's something that you haven't discovered yet that may improve your workflow, technique, or the overall quality of the video. Also, keep learning about techniques and what other people are experimenting with. Even if you don't learn something new, you may be able to help others in their journey.
My 3 biggest mistakes are rewatching the edit and getting distracted with side tasks. The last one is not investing in a better laptop to make the editing faster @phucmapvlog
I thought I had purchased the ideal video and photo editing laptop two Winters ago when I bought the Dell XPS 17 with performance graphics card and 4K touch screen. Turns out 16GB of RAM and one TB hard drive is very minimalistic for this purpose. I get updates over a year after purchase almost on a daily basis. Drives me crazy with all the nonsense time wasting hassles.
@@brickartphotos8686 the ram and storage is user upgradable
Try M1 macbook with finalcutprox - game changer
I need a better laptop as well! 🙋♀️🙌🏻 🤣
Until today I was a rewatcher! Going to work on that one.
Probably the most common is not mixing sound to the same volume level. There's nothing more annoying than volume going up and down throughout the video. Unfortunately, your vid is suffering from it as well.
Yeah sadly noticed a huge jump between the intro and the studio after that!
Look into a limiter!
Talk to Christopher Nolan - he's one of the worst offenders on that score.
Congrats Tyler. Welcome to The Haapoja family.... My biggest obstacle in Editing is all about organizing & finding clips while editing.... a new laptop would gain my freedom to work on location & not have to come to the Home/office everyday...

With that laptop, I can finally edit my wedding films without any lag or computer shutdowns. I film a lot of sporting events, and its tricking to use a 12gb computer that was never meant for video editing! Been watching you since the 'Travel Feels' days! Seriously you're an inspiration for my passions! Good luck to everyone entering the contest! Thank you Matti!
I know how you feel LAG UGHH
Congrats on the new(ish) job Tyler. Looks like you're going to fit in really well there! Thanks for the 5 tips Matti!
I edit a lot just for fun, weekend trips, vacations and so on, and the first thing I learned helping me is to pick the music first. Editing to an existing beat or mood of a song is a lot easier than working with a blank timeline.
Matti, GREAT video!! I’ve been a follower for a couple of years now and I think this is my favorite video. You’re totally right about just going for it. I’ve been terrified to start editing video but I’m gonna give it my best because of this. Thanks for all you do!
What’s y’all’s process from starting the edit to final edit? I don’t rewatch a lot, but my process is the cut up the talking part, then watch back, then layer b roll, then colorgrade, then sfx & titles, and then watch back 1 more time and export. Always curious on how other people do it !
What is the price or that laptop? I am thinking of getting a new one
Dude after getting back from my honeymoon in nyc I edited a 2.7k vlog on my late 2013 mbp and it was painful! So slow! Time is costly when trying to grow a channel I would speed up my workflow so much with that beast of a laptop! I want a big year of videos this year! Thanks for being so inspiring bro
Saving this for future references, as the saying goes editing is where the magic happens. It took me a while to realize this, thanks for the tips Matti!
Your lighting in this vid is 🔥! Great job Matti!
Great tips thanks really help re enforce some of the things I was doing. Sometimes felt I was trying to hard! Thanks the confidence 🙏🏾
All really good advice! Editing is definitely a learning process. Love the giveaway idea! Forces people outside their comfort zone which enhances the learning curve. I would use this to ASUS computer to continue building my RUclips channel and my photography! Cheers
Matti! Another great video - I started making videos because I loved editing! Love solving the puzzle that people can use to be entertained
Lolzzz I love the video creation process (filming, editing, creating thumbnails, etc.) HOWEVER I am currently experiencing this weird complex where I have a series of videos I'm currently working on (one at a time of course cuz my brain can only handle so much), but for whatever reason I do not have the energy to GET ER DONE. I've hit a wall. It's like I know how much work editing is going to take and my brain/body doesn't want to exert the effort. But once I'm in the process, editing flows, so I've been able to bypass that overwhelming feeling, yet it lingers on. Your advice on being too slow (LOL)! I do what your brother does and rewatch WAY TOO OFTEN! From the beginning too because I want to see how it's all coming together. That has to add to the overwhelming feeling I'm experiencing to edit I'M SURE. Thank you for the insight Matti!
Thanks Matti for these awesome projects lately! I’m a 19 y/o content creator and I’ve been editing on a MacBook with 8go of ram for 3 years. At first it was not that bad but as I grew my editing level it became really painful to always make proxies. I wanted to change for a new MacBook but this opportunity could save me some bucks for sure!
Another one! Yeah when I got started in editing my greatest concern was actually wasting it back without wanting to headbutt the monitor...thank goodness I have great role models in this space to motivate me! Keep up the amazing work! What I would use the laptop for would be to aggressively tackle my dream of cresting instructional videos for kids to learn music production and djing through engaging storytelling. It would be great to help our new generation take their creativity forward!
Hey Matti, just wanted to say your grade on this video is fire! Super clean, love those subtle orange and teal tones. Cheers!
Great tips! Really excellent. Whether new or experienced in videos, they bear repeating.
I’ve probably been guilty of all of these before, but definitely trying to work on that to make my travel videos more seamless and exciting
A great video as always!
Matti make a video on how you shortlist/hire video editors.
Hiring the right person is a skill , make something on that too 🍻
Great video; I learned so much. I can't wait to try the j & L cuts.
I feel like I can always watch new "Mistakes you're making in editing" because you can never really hear it enough. Isaac seems like a good fit, stoked to see new memes.
My big mistakes while editing are getting distracted to easily by phone calls, text messages, etc. it’s a perfect example of what not to do while editing. Put it on silent and just FOCUS! I bought an M1 Mac mini to expedite my editing and it lags with Davinci Resolve 17. So many people raving about it but it just hangs with too many FX and nodes. It blows my mind. I’m saving up and waiting to see how fast the Mac Pro will be.
@brendan.thebos I’d use this to replace my old 2015 laptop so that I could do more editing on the go, and not worry about latency nearly as much.
How long does it usually take for you to make an edit like this?
Thanks for the information. The part about the overlapping cuts was very interesting.
I really love watching your videos. I am learning how to edit and right now I am working on a 2020 iMac that isn’t fast anymore. LOL This would be a blessing for anyone including myself, who edit and are working on films and learning. :) Thanks Matti and team for all that you do. You inspire a lot of us that are out here beginning to keep trying. I haven’t posted anything on youtube yet because I want to get better at the basics and then I’ll start posting eventually. :)
Congrats on the new editor 😁All the best 📷🎥🎥
Thanks for all your amazing content. I hope to one day become as good as you are at storytelling and video shooting.
Hey Matti, currently I am a student and I currently am thankful for everything that I have. I do have a 7 years old heavy laptop that I try to do all of my projects on. If I won I would definitely use it to be able to take it all around my trips in international countries. Increasing on my workflow on how I can better improve it as I have a stronger computer. You have helped and taught me so much lately thanks !
That rewatching the edit thing is definitely a problem of mine! Thanks for pointing that out! :D
Great tips Matti! Enjoyed that video!
Matti never quits, and we are to gain. Love this guy. I'm literally editing a boring video right now haha.
0:49 "out of my 1 bedroom apartment, i was able to place tiny newspaper ads" lol
Just by watching this video I realized how many mistakes I do on my videos… thank you so much for putting this up, I’m definitely going to improve and pay more attention to the editing
I loved those antics at the end!
I’m in this point right now my channel is super boring but this video is super helpful I’m looking for a refresh thanks matti 🤗
Completely right, I enjoy the editing, it gives me some creative control. I send my videos to a few friends where I know they can be completely honest with me and they go after me if it's not working.
Definitely aiming to participate in this competition. I mostly specialize in Visual effects and animation side of film, but luckly there is a place for that too!
Thank you for the information bro 🙏🏽 keep up the good work!!
THANK YOU.. I so needed to here this! Everyone of these points are valid and need to be herd by anyone just stating out and struggling with editing 101. You've earned a new subscriber. 😃
Thanks Matti! Very useful 👍
Thanks Matti...you helped me speed up my edits 🙌
Hoping to commit to more video this year! Your videos are always good motivation to get going :)
The Asus ProArt Laptop would be a game changer for me. I’m often on the road in hotels working across the country. Having a machine that i could handle and process my client videos would be major. I edit on a PC desktop and having to wait until i get back home to edit is killing my productivity. Plus these specs are exactly what i need
@dadgotparks and I would use the Asus Studio laptop to be able to create better when I am on the go. Right now I have to film everything and edit it on my home computer much later. I feel like if I could work on the project after filming things would be fresher in my mind. Thanks for the opportunity and keep up the great work!
great video, and good advice, as a beginner in editing I am always looking for good advice. always good videos from this channel.
This past year I got into wildlife photography. I'm starting to dabble in video editing too and was looking at this laptop to replace my cheap 6 year old PC. I'm editing farming videos and have first wedding I'm helping at this summer! Biggest mistake I made was not taking the leap because I was scared I wouldn't be good at photography/filming and now I'm finally doing it after years of watching Matti, Pete, Casey etc. While I know I don't need a new device to do any of that it's still make it a lot easier!
Cut with precision! Love it.
All incredible tips… and I love your graphics 😎
@notmattmac I would use it to help progress my editing. I have a late 2007 MB Pro that is in serious need of replacement.
Quick question though, I know I’m at the leap of faith step, I’ve got my portfolio ready, I just feel like now that I’m at the edge, I’m really unsure of what my next move should be, I guess I’m struggling with getting my name/self out there, any pointers?
Such valuable stuff. I love what you said on pacing, that’s what I’m still learning now.. some dialogue don’t need last as long just because it was shot that long
Really great advice in this video Matti. Thank you. I like your tips on pacing and focusing on getting your cuts together before finessing. I know your video title grabs attention because “mistakes”. I found more tips than mistakes in this vid. Cheers.
Matti, thank you for your generosity and for sharing what you've learned with us. I am terrified of editing hence I have not ventured into the wild yet. I do not have a strong enough machine to even start learning the craft. I love to tell my stories and if I am lucky enough to win this fantastic machine, I will start my journey with you.
wow it woud be so nice to work on the road with this i only can edit from home for my buisness !!! having good hardware/software make a huge difference. Thank you, Matti!
Great advice and welcome to Isaac the new editor! I would totally love a chance to use that new laptop and finally edit video without pulling out my hair due to errors and lag from my 12 year old desktop. I could finally be like the ‘cool kids’ and edit in a posh coffee shop (I even have the seat I would sit at already picked out). As always, hanks for the epic content!
very insightful content for creator, thank you
I'm beginning my journey on youtube so having this kind of tool will make a big difference in my workflow!!
Editing is something that has scared me off so far, but some good tips that give me a start point. Thank you
Thanks for these tips. I could really use this new laptop!!
Hey Matti... learned a lot of things from your channel over the years. Keep up the great work 👍 big fan from 🇮🇳
Very cool. My biggest mistake when editing is not getting started... it takes me so long to get into the groove but once I get going it's hard to stop
@qmanity Great advice, Matti. I mainly make home movies for my family, but I'm always striving to refine my workflow as the videos seem to require more time and effort as I continue to learn how to shoot and edit.
hey matti love from india.... always loved the way explain technicality behind things
I was doing my university assignment it was about creating a music video and I had many problems in editing and managing the camera shots but this video really helped me a lot , Thank you very much Matti
New to the Final Cut Pro editing fam. I’m only have 3 videos uploaded on my RUclips channel and I can spot a major difference from my first video to the one I just uploaded 😂 PACING is KEY. I look forward to my growth. I wish you guys all the best as well!
great tips 🤩🙌 thanks man!
Really great tips Matti! I am glad to know that I do edit using these tips already. However I need improvement on the techniques. We have a vlogging style channel and really enjoy creating videos. 🙋♀️🙌🏻
New subscriber! love the channel and your tips have helped me a ton!! Thanks man!
i like all your video that why i get and idea how to do b-roll. and you are cool too you always laugh.
Great tips. Educative! Thanks🥂
@archiveweddingsca I would use the Asus ProArt laptop to help edit Same Day Edits and Wedding films! The footage from our Sony A7SIII often causes some lagging and I would love to have a new laptop to be able to edit on site!
Agreed!!! Going along with the music, my biggest pet peeve is not landing the Cut or transition on the beat … makes a world of difference @hoag
My comment disappeared lol 😂
Amazing video as always, some really good tips. Especially the one on feeling like you want to skip, that's that's sign for sure
I’m a RUclipsr from South Africa and I’ve just started my RUclips channel and have been posting and getting better at editing and the ASUS ProArt would really help me create more videos while mastering the craft!
You do a great job at keeping your editors on the brand.
Hi Matti. Can I ask a question? I just read that I can submit a music video for the contest. Can I submit a music video of my song that was released last May? I made the music video and the edit and the song!
@NTawa I would use this new laptop to replace my old macbook to do my editing. It is certain that I would save a lot of time and by applying your tricks it would go much faster. Thanks, Matti for those tips.
your video color is on another level dude !
This is really inspiring.u guyz are awesome really want to get that beast 🌱
Great advice and tips. Love thes videos
Hi Matti, thanks for this video, interesting to hear about these things.
One thing I want to say - why the audio is kinda low, but when there's music - it is 400%? I notice this not only in this video, but in many other creators'. I as a viewer don't like this at all. Especially when I'm watching some kind of educational videos. I should say I watch this on a desktop with speakers.
Loved this dude so helpful
Amazing video! Editing is where magic happens!
Helpful video, thank you!
Hey Matti, thanks for sharing these tips. I've been watching your videos and using the knowledge I gain from them and my videos are getting better. I'm retiring at the end of this year From 40 years as a Park Ranger and my wife and I are going to RV travel for a few years looking for a good place to settle down. We will be making videos of our journey and sharing them on RUclips and a better laptop would be such a treat. A real time saver when on the road and editing on the go. Thanks for the opportunity to win one.
great content as always Matti!
@chrisvallephoto I'd use the ASUS to crank out select previews for clients who want social media content either during or immediately after an event. I'm pretty good at using LR mobile and transferring via WiFi, but I really need a bigger display and faster sorting/export functionality.
@richbischoff Love the content Matti!, makes me wish I lived in Canada exempt for the cold.... I learn a ton from your channel about how to improve what I put out. Thanks!
Thanks For the tips Matti. With laptop I’d be able to bring the work to the client after shooting to show him little hint of what the end result would be like! 🤞🏻🤞🏻
Where I can to search video about Mattih’s shortcuts ?
Thanks
Nicely done!
