We’ve eaten at this vegan food court multiple times but hadn’t realised until now that we were missing the wonderful history and background you’ve shared in your video. Thanks so much for connecting so many dots. So many heartwarming takeaways.
There are no coincidences in this life, your day of eating became an adventure and a time to make new friends. Synchronicity is amazing and i see it alot in alot of your work. Each of your stories is a little gift and i appreciate and thank you for them!
This was soooo much more than the title suggests - a complete happy surprise. I learn something really cool every time I watch one of your videos. Keep 'em coming.
wow! this is a special video. So informative and well made , i'm learning so much more about my country then i ever hoped i could thanks to your videos! Thank you and keep making this great content!
It amazes me that a buddhist that believe in minimalist teaching has a great political and business strategy. A Cafetaria near a catuchak market is brilliant.
Absolutely amazing story of the culture and the history of Bangkok, Between fifty years I don't know too much of what is going on in Thailand. You doing an Excellent jobs by telling a stories.
And here I thought this channel couldn't get any better. 😅😅 Oh man, you can never imagine how excited I was everytime I saw your new upload! Good job guys!!🎉🎉
Fascinating story! Well done again. Growing up in Thailand, I remember my mother, once a year in October, would adhere to the Buddhist vegan fasting for nine days. We would eat the same vegan foods that she ate, which were very tasty. I recall lots of braised dishes that were full of flavor. Have you been to the Vegetarian Festival in Bangkok's Chinatown during the month of October?
Yes! We went this past year with some friends who were visiting. Interesting story about your childhood. Believe it or not, I actually grew up in a vegetarian household. We weren't strict- my mother would cook chicken or fish every once in a while- but in general we kept to vegetarian foods and mostly stuff grown from our own garden. I think it's actually helped me to appreciate not just fresh foods but also the value of meat when it is consumed.
@@OTRontheroadhi, if i may know why was your household vegetarian? It seems very interesting that a family in the US was vegetarian back then or are maybe your family quakers?
Crazy, I've visited the temple before, walked around the kutis and climbed the tower (there's usually a waterfall inside) but never knew about the food.
i loved this video and amazing story! Can you suggest any hotels or air bnb near that area so I can eat there everyday and meditate with these wonderful people? Subscribed!💓
Ah. You really got my attention with the vegan Isan sausage. The halal version is easy to find in Chiang Mai but not in Bangkok. I've often been up in the Bang Kapi area, mainly for table tennis at the Ramkhamkhaeng stadium (there's a fantastic night market with halal food there), but I didn't know about the vegan market, nor have I been to the mall yet. Time to visit both.
Very kool video!!! I am sad to be leaving Chiang Mai in two days, but now I have a new place to check out in Bangkok as we spend our last week in Thailand for the year. I am not vegan but I sure am interested in the good food made from good ingredients. Also I think I will have some of that pizza for sure. Thank you!
My family loves Santi Asok products. They are vegan and have a lot of innovations. Their self sufficient idea is also interesting. They brag in some interviews that during severe recession, due to their self sufficient they were impacted at all. Buddha Relic is a whole cult. It is believed that in Thailand, officially, presented to Thailand by the Indian government, true Buddha relics are placed in Wat Sa Ket and Wat Phra Sri Maha Tat Bang Kean.
Buddha's bone is dubious at best. Besides one of Buddha's teachings is to let go of material things. Worshipping bones is the opposite of the teaching: dharma. But otherwise, Santi Asoka seems beneficial to society.
Where was the pizza place because sometimes when I visit santi asoke bang kapi I have nothing to eat there I grew up on western food so I could run in there and grab lunch.
Excellent, well-made VDO! One correction that I would like to make is the VDO at 7.10 minutes. It said that "...he ( Phra Bodhirak) paid to finance a political party...". Monks and nuns there do not own any money or asset, which is a very basic Buddhist precept for monks and nuns.
Santi Asoke's philosophy is similar to Indian Asceticism, but less extreme. But to the minimalist, it is also at the extreme end as the minimalist is not exclusively a vegan, though a vegan can be a minimalist. I admire Santi Asoke's creed but I am still mired in worldly desire. I more or less follow the minimalist's philosophy and practice.
We're interested in anything- although what would also be really interesting to us is the Isaan location with the "som tam road"....where anyone can help themselves to som tam ingredients fresh from the gardens. That sounds like a place we definitely want to visit one day too.
Awesome. Hope we met her. Watch the video through to the end- hopefully we disprove the "cult" stereotype. Had a great time visiting. A lot of really kind people.
Think the term should be Buddhist vegetarian instead of vegan. Vegan would have avoided dairy such as the cheese in Pizza. Buddhist Vegetarian usually will avoid garlic, onion and leek among the Chinese Buddhist. I didn't quite get if the Thai Buddhist is avoiding the same herb though
Not a follower , by the way always support ; buying their products , eat the vegan food and donate the left over drug(personal prescribed) , used clothes or furniture , shopping at Palang Boon ; the honest enterprise to help their community etc , the bonus of visiting their place is you could automatic learn how to live wise and healthy life..
I don't know either, one of my friend's acquaintance is a promising student who proceed to study in America for a few years, That person end up adopted feminist and vegan teaching and change completely, return to Thailand and become full activist. how could people that seem like she will have a bright future ahead went deep into the extreme side of the movement really confuse me.
The hate and anger are towards violence against animals, which you would have to if you saw slaughterhouse footage like the Dominion documentary. Anyways I don't see the hate towards people, I rarely see Vegans actually attacking people

Informative and enjoyable video.
It's a story about vegetarian food at Boon Niyom Market is great. and the Santi Asoke community
Buddha's bone is dubious at best. Besides one of Buddha's teachings is to let go of material things. Worshipping bones is the opposite of the teaching: dharma.

That's a very interesting point.
@@OTRontheroad also lots Buddhist temples claim to have Buddha's bone on top of their pagodas, some have foot prints. So yeah, kinda dubious
Is the weekend market only open on weekends? Do you know the address? Thanks

Dear Lord!?? Why did this vegan place not come up in my Google map searches???
Wow
I recently read monks are restricted from participating in Thai politics by law.
separation of church and state at the finest . also an ancient way.
but they have right of free speech.
Why use the word “church” - wouldn’t sangha be more appropriate?
If i had a nickle for every great source of vegan food and products that was started by a cult, i could buy a house in San Francisco
thats all my grandma’s friends she is in this “cult”.
Awesome. Hope we met her. Watch the video through to the end- hopefully we disprove the "cult" stereotype. Had a great time visiting. A lot of really kind people.
Thank you so much because generally when people thing of “cult” they thing of demonic rituals or scams.

Just like Hindus in india during festivals Avoid onion garlic
The pizza probably had vegan cheese

That's a really nice thought. We should do the same with used clothes and furniture. Happy to support.
When vegan movement hit Thailand, I was puzzled by their hate toward meat eaters. How could someone who eat vegetable become so hateful.
If I didn’t get to eat meat I’ll also be hateful
Veganism is deleterious to mental health and health in general that is why there are many cheaters among vegans.
