- The Practical Nursing program prepares students to give competent, safe bedside nursing care at the practical nursing level. Licensed Practical Nurses provide a variety of patient care functions including basic bedside care, catheter monitoring, bathing assistance, personal hygiene assistance, assistance moving in bed, standing, walking, and more.
LPNs monitor patients, report adverse reactions to medications or treatments. They also gather information like health histories and current symptoms.
The course is divided into 3 sections. Introduction to Nursing includes a study of vocational relations, anatomy and physiology, normal nutrition, nursing principles and skills, beginning math for medication, first aid and CPR, and introduction to medical/surgical nursing. The first clinical experience is obtained in the nursing home.
Medical/Surgical Nursing applies to the care of the hospitalized adult with medical and/or surgical problems. This includes disease process, nursing care, diet therapy and pharmacology. Clinical experience is obtained a variety of settings, including long term, acute care and psychiatric facilities.
Finally, students are introduced to specialty areas of nursing: Maternal and Gynecological Nursing, and Pediatric Nursing. A final intensive clinical practice experience is designed to prepare the student to enter the work force.
Applicants to the program will be subject to various physical and mental health requirements, as well as a criminal background check, necessary for licensure.
