Now I have to wait for my day off on Sunday to hit the "S" river. Presidents weekend was always a good time to hit the river in the past so I'm hoping it holds true again now that it re-opened.

I cannot reciprocate enough the importance of setting up the right line and accepting even some error or finding a shop to let you demo. Recently bought a real nice $400 rod off Craigslist from someone for $100 because he hated the rod. I re-setup the 12.5ft 6wt with a mono running line and airflo scout, holy moly it’s amazing! Texted the guy, he said he wanted to try it, met him out at the river and he couldn’t believe it was the same rod. Funniest rod purchasing experience ever.

Thanks Joe. Great info. I have been playing around with various shooting heads on my Burkheimer 6128 down in New Zealand for the past two years. For what it is worth, here is my quiver of lines (with reasons) 1. SA Spey lite intermediate 420gn - intermediate head for casting big stuff and getting low and slow in winter (On an integrated line on a seperate spool) 2. AIrflow Rage 420 - a crossover between Skagit and scandi - ideal for windy days and when I want to do both Skagit and Scandi casts with medium size flies 3. Rio Scandi head (36 ft) - for summertime swinging when the trout are feeding through the water column 4. Scandi 3D 390gn (F/H/I) - for scandi casting small flies and getting below the surface in slightly deeper eg 3-4ft water.
..Also a Airflo FIST 450gn (with 1.5 feet cut off the back) for getting even deeper than with the Spey lite (although this was purchased before I got the Spey Lite and doesn't see much use these days)
You've done a really nice job of getting tuned in on your setup. These high stakes fisheries deserve some prep time, this quiver of lines didn't happen overnight. My hats off to you for your preparation. Nice job on that.

I have a TFO Pandion rod , 13'3" . It lists 500-650 grain on the rod. When selecting skagit heads, do I need to get a head that is already in that weight range, or do I need to know the grain weight of the tip section as well, and add the two?
That is a big window, I'm guessing you have an 8 weight. We don't carry TFO rods but that window usually includes traditional and Scandi weights. Skagit will always be a bit heavier. If you shot for a 600 Grain RIO Skagit MAX Launch head you'll be good to go. Fish either T-11 for T-14 tips (MOW medium or heavy will work), try one of each and tune it to your liking. Oh at that length, skip the poly and go straight up mono to Scandi. That will give you plenty of adhesion to the water. Great question! Perfect leader for that BTW.
Any of the MOW Light tips would be great, you can run pretty much any tip 10-15' in the 80-96 grain range on that rod. The RIO InTouch Replacement tips are actually tapered and cast extremely well. Oh yea there is a lot of static here. Well the MOW is a specific type of tip, it's hybrid floating/sinking is what's unique about it. You can have a 10' tip that is part floating/sinking which makes it unique. Depending on your choice there tips that only 2.5' sinks super fast allowing you to get down a foot or two and maintain approximate visual contact on approximately where your fly is. Most Skagit heads require a full 10' tip in order to cast properly, but anglers often want only 7.5', 5', or 2.5' of sink tip. These come in Light, Medium, or Heavy depending on your rod weight. Versileaders are basically just a leader that sinks, not really intended for Skagit use are not built with fly line material. This is a lot of info, probably just made things more confusing.

I have a G loomis nrx trout spey in a 4 weight with a rio trout spey line in 305 grain. What would be an ideal sink tip to run?

If my rod is rated for 600grain skagit, does that mean the skagit head itself is 600 or is 600 the total between head and sink tip?
Good question, typically you'll run a 600 head plus the tip. So you'll be near 700+ grains. If 600 is the upper window, go 575 to be safe.
