I love Streisand's version of this but Judy makes this totally her own and brings out all the many emotions so perfectly. She saved the fireworks for the end of the song and they were so exciting when they came. I wouldn't want to be without either. I never knew she ever sang this.
I recently read a biography of one of Johnny Mercer's most illustrious collaborators: Harold Arlen (*The Man That Got Away*). Of course, Johnny Mercer, as the lyricist of the iconic "Blues in the Night"--among other collaborative efforts with Harold Arlen, including the song above--received a fair amount of coverage. Among the topics examined in the book was the romantic attachment of Judy Garland and Johnny Mercer. I point this out not to judge or to denigrate either Judy or Johnny, but merely to show how their long-ago connection may have informed Judy's brilliant rendition of this evergreen song.
I much prefer Streisand's. I am sure that Barbra would disagree. Barbra always said that Judy was the greatest. I love Judy but Barbra way surpassed the master.
Judy outdid Judy herself in this performance. She had recorded this on Capital approximately 10 years earlier in the 1950's. She was so very excellent and overwhelming and I thought : Judy or anyone else will never ever equal or better this incredibly mesmerizing and hypnotic song. However, Judy's voice that night was at it's absolute peak and was equal to if not better than her performances at the Carnegie Hall in 1961! (Which absolutely is saying a lot!) Judy who was always doing her very best never stopped growing and trying to to be even better with each performance-just listen to her many performances of "over the rainbow" !!!😳🤔😌♥️
There are only a few singers whose phrasing and interpretation doesn"t "date" in some way. Judy Garland is one of the truly timeless ones: every word and note from the heart, beautifully shaped!
"Harold Arlen, who was always a good-luck charm for Judy." Very well said. After all, without the heart-tugging music of Harold Arlen (along with the equally excellent lyrics of "Yip" Harburg), Judy would never have had what became her signature tune, "Over the Rainbow"...and the world would have been a sadder place.
To see, feel, and hear the Judy magic, it begins with @2:00 and is so very electronic , mesmerizing, hypnotic and completely and absolutely captivating etc. you will see and feel her electrical magic that was always in all of her live performances and legendary concerts!🤔🙄😳🤪🤩🥰❤️
By the way the episode is available on RUclips in full along with several other episodes at the moment I am writing this comment. Torchy & bluesy "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" definitive & Judy version has never been equaled, peak masterful vocal form, classic song brilliantly acted out like never before...Bravo Judy!
Simply magnificent, SEÑORA 💖.. 🌿
She was an absolute genius.

To use a word that Judy said a lot, what a "peculiar" title for a song.
Ohh, Judy's art is out of this world.. 💜🌿

Especially when she's working with a song, like this one, by those two geniuses--Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer.
@@100YearJukebox You said it! 🙂
she sounds great here.....
And looks great. Her difficulties with drugs are not obvious in either her voice nor her face.
This is INCREDIBLE. She was THE all-original the likes of which we’ll never see again. Accept no substitute.
JUDY REALLY DEVELOPED AN EMOTIONAL INTENSITY IN HER 1960s VOCALS..BRAVO
It was the 60s, she was in her 40s.
Phenomenal!! ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
This is where Strisand got her version. Judy, her idol.
One of Johnny Mercer's best lyrics (with Harold Arlen, who was always a good-luck charm for Judy), and she gets every last bit of it. Just beautiful.

Just standing there, is perfection!
I wish this song and When the Sun Comes Out would have been in Judy's concert track list. She makes them both her very own. Thanks for sharing!!!
This is an amazing rendition!

She was one of the greats.
Quite, quite wonderful. And what a gorgeous orchestration, lush and romantic. All in all, a perfect merger of exquisite singer and great song.
does anyone know the band and arranger?
@@ilikemike97Arranged and Conducted by the Mort Lindsay orchestra.

Amazing ❤
So beautiful
Neither this (or Barbra's) versions can be topped. Not to be attempted by beginners.
"There Is no finer..."
Love this
I hope one day these shows are made color ....
Judy's is arguably the best version ever done; as it the orchestra and conducting...just hear that brass from 2.40 to 3.10!
man alive that's something!...
