er mee hi, carboxylic acids are the primary functional group and therefore the carbon numbering starts at 1 in the carboxylic acid. it is always assumed that this out position 1 and therefore you do not need to number ethanoic acid. you see do need to number dioic acids like butane-1,4-dioic acid. check out my revision site for lots more resources at drclays-alevelchemistry.com
