Anne Murray was renowned for being able to do her recording in one take. She is precise as a laser beam.
I'm glad you brought that up. During the recording of the 1985 Tears Are Not Enough collaboration of Canadian singers, organized by Bruce Allen, he insisted that she do a few more takes of her part. In her usual calm demeanor, she suggested if he re-listened to her first take he'd realize it was the right one. He didn't believe her, so she recorded a few more takes, only to have him surprisingly declare that she was right. For some reason he always had a dislike of her, but after that incident he praised her and never spoke ill of her again. I heard the story on a radio show in the 80's, by Bruce Allen himself.
And yet delivering it with so much emotion
@@frankenfurter58 Bruce Allen or David Foster ? Bruce Allen became her manager later in her career.
@@devonmackify It was Bruce Allen. I found out years later that he became her manager later and it made me laugh. Because prior to the recording incident he had nothing nice to say about her. He did have the reputation for being a jerk tho.
Anne was a consummate professional . I remember many years ago Anne performed on the Mike Douglas show . When her song was over Mike Commented to the audience what a true professional she was because they had rehearsed one song and they played the music for a different song and Anne never missed a note .
There was an Anne Murray doc released not that long ago. She was a trailblazer. She took control over her career and did not allow "men" to push her around. She is a wonderful human being.
I should add that kd lang is her biggest fan.
I'll have to look for that.
@@newtron1 talent knows talent!
KD LANG had Anne Murray do her induction to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame 2013. It was a joy to watch can be found on RUclips
@@Loruca it's called Anne Murray: Full Circle, and was released this past December. For a short time, it was here on RUclips, but was taken down, probably due to copyright. You might find it on the CBC website. Good luck.
I grew up with Anne's music and it always comforted me. She has such a special soft caressing touch in her singing - a bit like Karen Carpenter, but unique in her own right. Her singing goes right to your heart like a mother singing a perfect lullaby to a child.
Thanks Fil for this wonderful tribute and for recognizing her incredible technique that was so perfect and natural that it never felt like she was trying to make a song, but rather everything she sang just flowed out of her like it was coming straight from her heart.
I always loved her. She wasn't very "hip" or fashionable. She was discrete, modest but still she won everybody through har marvellous voice. It looked as if she made no effort to sing. She had a beautiful instrument and used it with sobriety! Si very beautiful. Thanks, Fil!
@@bobbytookalook I fully agree with you. She could be in rags and still be perfect.
she is pure canadian as you get we are all so proud of you Ann
One of our many Canadian treasures
I am a huge fan of hard rock, garage bands, punk etc but I always liked her. She came across as pure and wholesome with a sense of humor.
She was always one of my favorites. Her voice and ability to use it makes it a instrument able to stand alone.
Anne was my childhood crush. I always loved hearing her sing because it was so soft and comforting. Thank you Fil for putting Anne in the spotlight.
Thank you. Her voice is like butter!!! She moves between the notes and registers so effortlessly that it seems deceptively easy. Thank you for highlighting her amazing talent.
Most anyone would give and arm and even a leg to have a voice like hers. I'm from Canada and she so loved! There are 3 woman I just love. Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt and Karen Carpenter. When they sing you stop and turn the volume a little higher and you sing with them
I add Dolly Parton to that list.
Wow..i had the same 3 on my list.
Fil, I love the artists you honor with your analyses. Even more so, I love the genuine appreciation and respect in your demeanor as you review talented artists' works. Your eyes twinkle! You are a sweet soul! I grew up listening to artists such as Anne Murray, The Carpenters, Glen Campbell among others that I have seen you review. Great music! I am so glad you shared your reverence for Anne's talent with us. Now excuse me, I'm off to listen to "Snowbird." Cheers!
@Stinkbug well said! your comment deserves more like 👍 Fil is one excellent music teacher who give credit where credit due regardless of genres or decade.
Nice comment! 😊
Absolutely. Fil’s VERY respectful to all his ‘guests’.
Canadian content for my Canadian soul🙏
I feel fortunate to have grown up hearing great singers.
I got to hear her live in Austin, Texas back in the 1980s. Twice!
Great times.
This was my very first favorite song from the radio!
Wonderfully written, emotionally powerful song, but the feeling Murray brings to it is really special.
I may be biased because I live in Canada, but Anne truly is a Canadian treasure here...and still remembered and loved around the world. She has such a beautiful, unique voice that stands out from others and you know it's her the instant you hear her. I saw her live several times here in British Columbia...the last time being in 2008 for her 40th anniversary farewell tour in Kelowna, B.C.. She is awesome live and has quite the sense of humor as well. She was always good to her fans and I was fortunate to meet her a couple of times, including that last time in Kelowna. Always happy to pose for a photo or sign an autograph. My dear late Dad just adored her and loved all her TV specials on CBC, which were must see TV for us Canucks. I sure miss those specials, especially her Christmas ones. Anyway, when I met her the first time, I told Anne about my Dad and how we used to tease him that Anne was his girlfriend...she laughed and said that was sweet. I wished my Dad could have seen her, but sadly he passed of a sudden heart attack in 1993. The following year, Anne was in Kamloops B.C. and I went and saw her for the first time to honor my Dad and I just knew my Dad was there in spirit. 😊❤
Sweet story. :)
@@slothbros7607 Thank you 😊
This is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written. The beauty of the chord progressions is nearly peerless. Nice to see her acknowledged for the younger generation.
And believe it or not, a band called…I know it’s a little cringey…Boyzone, sing a very sweet and credible cover of this song, with a really sweet video. Worth checking out.
Fil, I'm so glad you showcase some artists that many of these younger people have likely never heard of.....it exposes them to great music and talented performers and I APPRECIATE that, and you, immensely.
As a Canadian, I never expected to hear Anne on this channel, but I appreciate it. She never really played my kind of music, but she is such a talent, I can enjoy much of her music all the same.
i wouldn't say she is mine either, but her music is so moving that when you hear her it pulls at your heart strings.
I am a proud Canadian and always loved Anne Murray growing up. She truly is one of our national treasures! I still listen to her albums all the time as I don't think her songs ever go out of style.
Anne Murray and Helen Reddy were two of the greatest voices of the late 20th century.
Sorry, can I add kd lang?
Her gift is making it look and sound so incredibly easy. I was asked to sing this at a funeral and thought it would be easy. Turns out this song has tricky jumps and is more difficult to sing than it sounds. I agree that Anne and Karen Carpenter can sing the phone book and make it sound perfect. Your analysis of her performance is excellent.
Anne always delivered exactly what her fans wanted and expected. her live performances were as good as or better than the studio recording, her vocals were always smooth and in perfect pitch; no grandstanding or gyrating around the stage. And kudos to her for her decision to retire when she felt she could no longer deliver the highest quality product to her fans.
Thanks Fil. Another wonderful vocalist so deserving of your analysis!
Take care.
Anyone who's gone through the Canadian education system since 1969 knows "Snowbird" by heart, because we all learned to sing it in primary school. As soon as you mentioned it, the song started playing in my head..."Spread your tiny wings and fly away, and take the snow back with you, where it came from on that day". ❤️🇨🇦
WOW! I'm a contralto too so I have always admired her voice but she hits high notes that I can only dream of. She makes it look like she's just talking to you, God her voice is so great ❣️💯💖
Indeed. That is the magic of the Contralto voice, they don't just sing to you, they speak to you! I am one too and a proud Canuck at that
I just love Anne Murray's songs, she is one of my favorite country music artists. She has a beautiful, smooth voice like Karen Carpenter did, which is something I wish I could do because these low contralto voices seems to bring emotions out of the songs they sing. Beautiful!
She sounds like mezzosoprano.....Karen as well
“Could I Have This Dance” from Urban Cowboy 🤠 and “Danny’s Song” bring me to tears every single time I hear them.
bev just a few days ago was looking for urban cowboy soundtrack after mickeys passing forgot anne was on there also talking double vinly great photos have dig out of record crate next few weeks
@@marktait2371 some great tunes on that vinyl! It saved us from disco
thanks bev have to i have original copy cdb and many others saw in indie record store couple of months ago new remastered etc. was like 40 plus so glad still have original the photos on the sleeves maybe sounds better than new remaster i bought for like 10 dollars 5 6 years ago sure way more than that now yeh recall movie came out when disco was big so may have saved us from do have chic and pointer sisters and tgif soundtrack 3 vinlys is dj copy donna summer single if at least have a few disco records that are good rest ugh mediocre at best ps my original copy believe has the poster also have to dig out
There is a song from early in her career that few people now but I think shows her at her very best. If you can get by the bizarre, creepy organ, her voice was never better. Buffalo in the Park
Thank you Fil for giving Anne a look. She is amazing. In the 70's Snowbird would come on the car radio and you just felt like you were flying down the road! Such a range and natural voice.
Anne got so tired of that song she completely quit singing it live!
She has such a warm voice, so full of feeling. Just beautiful.
What a beautiful voice Anne Murray has!
She always made it look so easy. So relaxed and resonant.
Anne Murray's voice is so soothing and can tell a story. The way she sings is so effortless.
One of the prettiest voices in Country Music history. I do not believe there is a bad Anne Murray song. She sometimes gets lost under the radar due to some of the other "more famous" female vocalists of the late 70s through the 80s Country. Her voice is really missed in today's music for sure.
The song "Snowbird" introduces me to Anne Murray, what a pleasant voice she has. This is your channel so feel free jump into a performance at any time Fil I don't mind. 😁glad to see Anne Murray on your channel 👍
As a proud Canadian myself, I've always Loved Anne. This song always evokes the emotions big time. Another one you should check out Fil, is Her version of Kenny Loggins (Danny's Song) :)
I saw her in Las Vegas in the early 80s and I was mesmerized- her voice was soo good - every song was great. One of the best live shows I’ve ever seen.
I grew up mostly a hard rockin metal head... And then there was Anne Murray. I have loved her voice since the first time I ever heard it. I have all of her albums, and while not every song is my favorite, I can't say I don't at least like every single one. 💜
I saw Anne twice in concert. Apart from her beautiful voice , she is funny! For many years she told a great story about her first NYheadlining concert in 1972 at New York's Central Park.
Good choice with Anne Murray. Beautiful voice.
Love Anne Murrey. My late husband and I considered her rendition of "Can I Have This Dance (for the rest of my life)" as 'our song'. It was the last hymn (because that was what it was to us) at his funeral: and I couldn't hear it without crying for a good few years.
A very beautiful and gifted lady with a voice to match.
I have been an Anne Murray fan for over 40 years but this was the first time I ever heard isolated vocals. I'm impressed all over again.😂
Great review of a great singer....she's our Annie.
Love her! Smooth Voice with texture! Classy.
Anne Murray is my favorite singer, a voice like no other! ❤
I remember her on Singalong Jubilee. I've been a fan ever since. I heard that she is classically trained, but in that world the sopranos get the acclaim. (Maureen Forester being a notable exception.) I also heard that Elvis Presley named her his favorite female singer.
Her tone, artistry, and musicality put her among the greats. For me, something else, which you didn't address is her diction. I rarely understand lyrics because of a hearing loss that makes it difficult to distinguish between some consonants. With Anne, I hear every word.
She retired around 2008 as she wanted to stop while she was still strong and didn't want to have to make excuses. I understand she doesn't regret it and is enjoying her golf.
I remember her from Don Messer's Jubilee doing a duet with Charlie!
I remember when Anne first showed up on Singalong Jubilee out of CBC Halifax we stopped dead. My father spotted her as someone special. That is also where she encountered the late Gene MacLellan who wrote some of her earliest hits. The show was hosted by Bill Langstroth who went on to be Mr. Anne Murray.
I was in high school when Anne Murray started singing on Canadian TV. ("Singalong Jubilee", a pretty corny name, I know!) She was so genuine, no artifice, and that pure, relaxed voice! The whole country fell in love with her. A true role model. When it was her turn to sing, no one in the house made another sound. Thank you so much for giving her the respect she deserves.
I love Anne!
Her voice, like John Denver’s is always dependable n crystal clear mountain water!
I'm almost 66 and every now and again I stumble across something from my childhood I had long forgotten but when I hear still amazes me. This is one, Snow Bird is another. I didn't appreciate hem anywhere as much as I do today. Anne is retire now (sadly, many would say) but she has an amazing voice and an ear for a great tune. So glad to have rediscovered her, with the help of Fil, who is simply the best. Glad to hear him mention the great Karen Carpenter, to my ear the greatest of all time.
Thanks for doing this. Anne Murray was one of my dad’s favorites. We used to listen to her in the car on 8 track :). One of the few times my dad would actually listen to music in the car.
Forty/fifty yrs ago when she was so popular.. in my 20s and country music was my favorite genre. She was amazing (as was Karen Carpenter). So grateful to have lived during this amazing time in music. As always Fil.. thanks for a very detailed analysis, and trip back in time!
This song was song-writer Randy Goodrum's first hit but he was frustrated by it being almost impossible to sing, at one point he supposedly threw it away and retrieved it again. His employer tried hard to pitch the song but nobody knew what to do with it. A beautiful melody but a song with no choruses and nobody could sing it until Anne Murray came along and made a mega hit 1978 that stayed at no 1 in the charts for 37 weeks, a record unbroken until 1995.
Contribute a bit of cash to Wikipedia, let's not lose it. 👍
Again, I am not a musician, nor educated in music, but it is so wonderful to learn from you and reach some understanding of how and why the singers I've loved and appreciated really are so great and talented. It makes me appreciate them even more! Anne Murray is one fine example - such a clear, pure voice she has! Of all the gifts and talents a human can have, I've always thought to be able to sing so beautifully would be the one I'd choose! Thank you, Fil!
Elvis said he wished he had Anne's vocal talent. I never understood the appeal, BUT as always Fil enlightens me! Thanks!
Oh my gosh, her voice is just so beautiful.
I grew up in a house where Anne was played all the time, I started singing along with this immediately. So beautiful.
Het Fil. I LOVE Ann Murray and this song is one of my favorites. Thank you
Anne Murray is my alternate favorite singer of all times. Thank you for this great video.
Expecting 'Snowbird'. I remember an early recording mag, the interviewee said that Anne could probably listen to a vocal and guess the mic and eq. Total pro.
As a Canadian, I have always loved Anne Murray - she has a fabulous voice. But I have to say - You have an amazing voice as well! Love your channel!
Stunning vocal.
Grew up watching Anne - incredible talent. I always thought her voice sounded a lot like David Gates on some of his songs like "Make it with You". Thanks for this review.
I love Anne Murray’s voice. I grew up listening to her music, as she was one of my older sisters favorite artists. It’s ALSO RUMORED, that she was ELVIS’S Favorite FEMALE Vocalist. LOL you might have to research that, but I remember hearing that rumor even as a very young kid.
I had a major ‘crush’ on Anne when I was a teen. Her voice captured my heart and her beauty fired my teen aged longings! Ha ha ha! I never was within 600 miles of any concerts or shows, but that didn’t diminish my admiration for her. I guess I was a long distance groupie!
Love love Anne Murray. Thank you so much for analyzing her voice. My Mom loved her. She makes everything so effortless looking. I never realized she had a great range until I saw it on the software. That makes me appreciate her ability even more.
As a Canadian female, raised in the '60's & '70's I Thank you for the title of this review.
Until Shania Twain, Anne was our only well known songbird outside of Nashville ...
Michelle Wright is from the Windsor, Ontario area, but fell through the cracks of the transition between the First Ladies of Country singers & the next batch ( Mary Chapin/Carter, Trisha Yearwood, et al).
Personally, I think the "politeness" factor that we were raised with, stole the toughness she needed to achieve super-star status.
Thank you for doing her!!! She was my idol back in the day as she sang in the same register that I did!!! She was so smooth!!!!!! Her timing, phrasing & control were simply amazing!!!! If we could do an Anne Murray song well - we knew we had put in our hours of practice!!! Thank you!!! She sang with many a great male artist!!! Another great underrated female artist of the time was Rita Coolidge - pure velvet!!!!
Anne Murray is as Canadian as it gets! A proud Canadian. Thanks Fil for the video!
She is great! Love when she does You won't See Me by the Beatles. As usual, you nail her technique. A lot like Karen Carpenter as you say.
I sing and it's fascinating to hear these isolated vocals. You can hear all the tiny little subtle stylistic touches that are so difficult. The tricky thing about the slides is hitting the destination note pitch perfect. That's what makes these techniques so difficult, but she does it spot on. And this is live, so errors are not an option. She was a great vocalist and was a precursor of other greats that came later like Karen Carpenter, Toni Tenille, and Helen Reddy. I always loved her voice. Another underappreciated voice from her generation. Gosh we had so many talented artists in the 60's and 70's.
Thanks for this. Glad to see Anne getting this attention, which she deserves. She once said she really isn't a country singer and I think, in the traditional sense, she isn't. She's a great balladeer, an elegant vocalist with a pure, sonorous tone. If you check out her earlier career you'll find she sang more folk at first and even some rock, a little gospel--she's always had this broad spectrum of song choice. And if you'd ever seen her live, you'd know how in command she always is, on top of having a really wry sense of humor. A beautiful voice.
I've long been a big fan of both Anne Murray and Karen Carpenter. Thanks for covering this performance
Oh wow. Another trip down memory lane. This song is so beautiful and Anne's voice so incredible. Great analysis as always. Thank you for presenting this wonderful Canadian singer .
Thank you for the analysis! Anne Murray is a legend in Canada, and particularly the Maritimes (east coast). She never forgot her roots and has been a great supporter of her hometown, Springhill Nova Scotia. She has a beautiful voice and always comes across as a genuine person. She retired back to Nova Scotia, bless her. Really appreciate this one Fil!
Her Dad was a doctor in Springhill, wasn't he, at the time of the mine disaster?
@@coldlakealta4043 Yes, and I think she talks about the “bump” of 1958 in the CBC documentary
She’s an absolute delight. I’ve loved and admired her since I first heard Songbird.
The resonance/timbres ? (I don’t really understand which) of her voice is incredible.
Added bonus she sings in my key (as far as I understand such things).I can sing along to an entire album of hers without straining so hard my face hurts. 🤣🤣🤣
So enjoyed your analysis of Anne's voice! Have always been a huge fan of hers since early on since Snowbird. A voice of an angel. Nice to see you give her such praise for having an amazing talented voice that she has!
By the way, Fil.....don't mean to sound fawning, but watching you, one can see the genuine love and appreciation of the music in your eyes. It's lovely to see. Someone(s) in this world needs to be on the receiving side of such looks.....some lucky soul(s)! All of life's best to you!
Hi from Waterloo Canada. So many 'AM' singers from here. Starting with Anne, but adding Anna McGarrigle, Amanda Marshall, Alanah Myles. Oh yes, and Alannis Morrisette. :-)
Hi yourself from Woodstock ON.
Anne Murray’s Greatest Hits album was the first album I ever asked my parents to buy for me. Her voice is so rich and resonant, and wonderfully effortless. She doesn’t need to grimacing and popping veins out of her neck; she just fills the place with her presence and beautiful voice.
Thank you for this analysis. She is one of my favorite singers. Several years ago I was fortunate enough to see her in person, and when she started singing, I actually cried. Her voice simply moves me...so emotional.
Haven't heard of her fil never listened to her before until now she has a very soft smooth tones in her vocals great pitch great vibrato she has a fantastic voice love her smooth round vocals spot on voice great singing love her
Aqui, (no Brasil), eu só conheço essa música dela😍 ; foi tema de uma telenovela acho que 79/80...🤔

Welcome to the Anne Murray team. I have listened to her sing since I was a preteen. my teacher went to university with her and was a good friend so that peaked my interest. I also watched her on Sing-along Jubilee and to see someone I 'knew' on TV only increased my fascination with her. Now that I am a contralto she and Karen Carpenter are my got to sing-alongs lol.
I love to hear her sing, it sounds so effortless yet so controlled.
I remember Anne Murray! Loved her! 👍👍
This was one of the first songs I ever sang - but I would never say I did it as well as the wonderful Anne Murray. Always loved it. Beautiful bottom register. Thanks Fil
Great analysis. Funny, When I was growing up in the 70s, I was in love with three famous women. Ann Murray, Karen Carpenter, and Olivia Newton-John. And that was just from hearing them on the radio... I didn't know what they looked like til many years later.
Anne Murray is one of the few remaining treasures. We're losing so many great talents with the recent passing of Olivia Newton John, Thank you for providing a venue to keep these wonderful gifts alive. Cheers!
Snowbird…. a Canadian icon….😁🇨🇦
I absolutely love her voice (showing my age I used to sing along with her when I was a child), she is such an elegant vocalist. Love your choices for analysis
Great song, hadn’t heard it for decades, thank you.
I have loved Anne for most of my life.
Always loved Anne’s beautiful voice. Thanks Fil
Thank you for doing this. I love Annes voice.
I’m such a child of the 70s, I will forever love Anne Murray, John Denver (best live voice I’ve ever heard!), Linda Ronstadt… Thanks for doing an analysis of her voice, that contralto is incredible
Anne hangs out a golf course I like to play, she's friendly.
She's from Nova Scotia. Of course she's friendly!
Anne Murray - pure gold!
I’m so old I remember watching her on Sing a long Jubilee! Such a beautiful voice and she makes it look effortless. I really enjoy her Christmas recordings.
Me too. I also went to one of her early concerts in Halifax. Remember her singing barefooted?
@@olivemd Yes I remember her being barefoot. KD Lang does it too.
Did you catch her on Don Messer's Jubilee? She did a duet with Charlie.
@@coldlakealta4043 No, don’t remember that.
