  • Anne talks about the dark years when she thought she was a "one hit wonder", her children William and Dawn, her marriage and the early struggle.
Anne Murray was the first Canadian female solo singer to reach No. 1 on the U.S. charts, and also the first to earn a Gold record for one of her signature songs, "Snowbird". She is often cited as the one who paved the way for other international Canadian success stories such as k.d. lang, Céline Dion and Shania Twain. Anne's hits included Kenny Loggins's "Danny's Song" (1972), "A Love Song" (1973), "He Thinks I Still Care" and her Top 10 cover of The Beatles' "You Won't See Me" (1974). Her all-time biggest hit "You Needed Me" (1978) was the biggest hit of her career (and her personal favorite), "I Just Fall in Love Again", "Shadows in the Moonlight", and "Broken Hearted Me" (1979); her remake of The Beatles' "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" (1980), "Daydream Believer" and "Could I Have This Dance" (1980); "Blessed Are the Believers" (1981); "Another Sleepless Night" (1982); "A Little Good News" (1983); 1984's "Just Another Woman in Love", "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" and "Time, Don't Run Out On Me" (1985). Murray married Bill Langstroth, music producer in 1975. They have two children - William (born 1976) and Dawn (born 1979), a singer-songwriter and artist who has recorded with her mother a number of times. Bill died in 2015. Anne is currently 71 years young!

I always loved her voice. I'm an alto too, so I could sing along well. She represented "real" music at a time when music had become a lot of different things, including some that was just noise. It was nice to be able to hear the words, with that beautiful, gravelly, whispery voice. I can relate to being troubled by having to work away from the kids.

makes me sad to hear that Anne was miserable from the years 1970-76. I saw her twice in Seattle during those years and loved her shows. You would never have known she was unhappy. Still love her to this day. I miss seeing her in concert and would love new music from her.

I just love your mom. She was the first concert that I ever went to - at age 5! :) My grandma, mom, and older sisters took me.
My grandma - who was also a teacher, and our school's vice-principal, always had your mom's music playing in her house. Your mom's voice is a favourite childhood memory of mine! It makes me think of lovely time spent with my grandma.

Dawn, beautiful name full of meaning. I first heard your mother's voice when I was 17 (1977) singing "You needed me" on the radio. Then I rushed to a store in Montevideo to buy a "cassette" with other hits (Snowbird and Danny's song). Thank God your mother never gave up, and kept on believing what she would achieve.
Each one of the songs is special, simply because of her special and unique voice. Delightful.
Saludos a ustedes desde Uruguay. Ana María. 5 de marzo 2022.

Thank you Dawn for the videos that enable us to "share" moments of your lives.
Some of them so funny, like the one with you both singing in a bathroom while shopping, and a lady surprised finding out the "source" of the singing. I laughed a lot.
      Saludos nuevamente.

Eileen, you are a natural interviewer, and so informative. Wow....have things changed on the crapola, local TV level. That..is another story for another time...(the poor TV kids think they are doing a service).
I watched some of AM's later interviews and she is less forthcoming...maybe fame got the best of her?..tired of the same old story? Who knows. Congratulations for what seems refreshing in these very silly TV times, for the great job you did. She opened up to you because she trusted you. Nice job. BTW, Paul's Mall and the Jazz Workshop was where a lot of big names got their start. It was another time.

Just watched her 1973 Talk of the Town performance and she certainly did not look like she had a confidence problem. She owned that stage and looked like she'd been doing it for a couple of decades, not a couple of years.
