We enjoy them, having a water feature in the winter also draws in many birds. It takes a little work to thaw the ice but they really benefit having plenty of food and water during the winter.
I have many lesser goldfinches at mt feeders in Eugene, OR. I haven't been feeding thistle, and I still have house finches, lesser goldfinches & American goldfinches
Thank you so much for the detailed description! I have both eating Nyjer seed right now and I am never sure of which is which until your video. I have read field guides and googled bird sites and none have described the two birds like you.
Hello, this feeder is commonly found at most hardware stores and online. Fill with Nyjer seed and the American and Lesser Goldfinches will enjoy eating at your feeder. We also get other birds that enjoy the seed as well. The seeds are tiny and poke out of the mesh and are available for the birds to eat. I would suggest getting the seed at an animal feed store instead of the supermarket. I find the quality and price better at the animal feed stores. Enjoy these wonderful birds. Thanks for watching, Mr. G
It can be a challenge to differentiate between the two species during the winter. This is the perfect video to share with a particular friend who is a bit newer to bird feeding. We both get Goldfinches and Lesser Goldfinches at our feeders and this video makes it very clear how to tell which is which during the winter. Thanks so much!
Hi Ricky, yes I used my GoPro. I have really enjoyed using it. Hope you are enjoying the great outdoors and the wonderful biodiversity that is in your area. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Alana, I like to use Nyjer seed to attract the finches. Both the Lesser and American Goldfinch enjoy eating this seed. I think you will find Pine Siskins also feeding on this food source. I get my seed from IFA Country Stores ( ifacountrystores.com/) Once these birds find a supply they will consistently come and feed. I would also have a water source for the birds. We have a couple of simple features that we use and the birds can drink and take a bath. Thanks for watching.
Hello, the Lesser Goldfinch is located in Western United States. Their range also extends down into northern part of South America. The American Goldfinch is primarily in all of North America. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/American_Goldfinch www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Lesser_Goldfinch/maps-range Enjoy the Journey,

great footage. thanks for uploading and giving some fun facts about identification :)
Do you have a link to the feeder? I assume there is sunflower, don't understand how they can nibble on it. Perhaps it is some mesh.

Very nice, I will check out your page.
Informative! Nice tips on how to spot the difference between the American and Lesser Goldfinch. Did you say you placed " Niger " seed in the feeder?
