Always here for more VoicePlay (or Geoff's solo work). Thanks for this reaction to an older one. This was the first appearance of "VioLayne." In VoicePlay's 25+ year history, VioLayne has made three appearances. Layne studied classical violin beginning at age 4 (for 11 years, I think). At the time of this video, J. None was a permanent member of the group, rather than the featured guest he is nowadays when he can get military leave to sing with VP. Omar Cardona never has been a permanent member of VoicePlay. Omar is always listed as a featured guest when he sings with them, which he does frequently.
Additionally, this is back when Earl was still high tenor. So there are two tenors here (with Eli) plus J as baritone. VoicePlay often has Omar guest when they want more tenor even though Cesar can sing tenor, technically he is often singing the baritone part - it all depends on how they arrange the song. There are times when VoicePlay makes the song into 3 tenor parts.
I would definitely vote for you to watch the Seven Nation Army cover. They did a fantastic job with that! And they have Anthony Gargiula (gar gee oo lah) as their featured performer on that one, and he is wonderful.
The big guy is earl Elkins and the black guy is j none you’ve probably seen at least j before. He joined the marines as a singer and comes back when he’s o leave he still has a year or two before his enlistment up. We love violayne playing violin he rarely does. He did on nothing else matters and the lion sleeps tonight.
🙂 Note: J. sings for the Navy (rather than marines) and is currently stationed in DC since his latest promotion. I agree...watching Layne play the violin is a joy, as it is when he sings for us.
This was 4 yrs or more ago. Earl Elkins was an original member from middle and high school (out of school in 1997) and recently he left the group for personal reasons. The black guy is J None (currently in the US Navy for 5 yrs, 1.5 yrs to go). He still comes back when he has some leave to do some videos with VoicePlay - check out Thriller, Valhalla Calling, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Friends on the Other Side, Nothing Else Matters, In the Air Tonight, Hellfire, Zat U Santa Claus? all with J None in these.
Regarding Seven Nation Army - you might like to know that Warriors is considered the 1st in their apocalyptic series. 2nd is Aerosmith’s Dream On. And 3rd is Seven Nation Army. I really love what they did with the series. Dream On seems to be about not giving up while looking back on what has happened (fans see that as the group losing Earl & J to the Zombie Hordes and gaining Cesar & Omar). Then comes Seven Nation Army which feels as if they have found the wherewithal to determinedly fight on again (after losing Omar and picking up Anthony). And YES! You really want to watch it! It is a rather unexpected version. They really make it their own!
Earl was an original member from 1997, he left in 2020 for undisclosed personal reasons. React to whatever you or your audience requests. I rarely watch anything other than Geoff and Voiceplay.

Still one of my top favorites.
If you pay real close attention, both Layne AND J.None played violin in this. 😮
I wonder why J didn't play more? There are, I think, three very quick shots of him playing. I would love to have seen more.😊
