- Sure, we love bears when they show up in books or cartoons. But what if one is outside our window? Human-bear encounters are becoming far more frequent as development continues to spread and people and bears seek similar resources of food, water, and shelter. National Geographic Explorer and large-carnivore ecologist Rae Wynn-Grant dispels a few myths about bear behavior, describes what it’s like to cuddle a bear cub, and offers tips on what to do if you find a bear in your backyard-or bump into one in the wild.
Photo Caption: Janice Husebo and Janney Husebo, a married couple from Asheville, N.C., live on the outskirts of town high up on a hill surrounded by wilderness. Multiple times a day bears show up on their back porch, which stands about 10-to-15 feet above the ground, to eat the bird seed the couple leaves out. Janice has developed a close bond with the bears and plays with the cubs using a feather duster through the sliding glass door. Some of the bears have lost their fear of humans and spend hours on her porch relaxing, bathing in the tubs of water she leaves out, and lurking at the sliding door in hopes that someone would bring them a snack.

This expert has a wonderfully true view on bears (and all animals in fact). Most often, we humans are the problem, not the animals. We're more intelligent and should behave and act accordingly.
If you love bald eagles come to the Florida keys in the winter. In particular key largo that's when they are breading. It's great to watch two bald eagles watching their chick learn to hunt. They just sit 100 yards from each other and watch make sure he isn't dinner
We build up around and on bears homes.
We are running them out of space. Keep your distance.
Leave them alone.
In my area we have sanctuary areas to protect them.

Best thing to do is to stay away from their territory. Unless, your primary job is at a State park, or wild sanctuary. There are parks where you can see bears from a safe distance and they’re kept safe from humans.

Grew up in a pretty countrified part of NJ 70’s-80’s. Lots of back roads & farms. No deer crossing signs or fear of hitting or seeing one. Forget about bear. Now there are both.

They used to wander through our town all the time. But that’s Cobalt Ontario, and expected. We’d just park till the bear got off the road.

Bears are omnivores, not carnivores. Stop being an.alarmist. They're interested in eating your leftover blueberry pie, not your children. They are coming into neighborhoods because you've colonized their natural environment and homes.
