'i don't really know why I'm planting so much of it' ... lmao amen brother do you
I have Kandy Korn for my sweet variety and Hickory King yellow corn that will make some good hominy and cornmeal.
Hickory King does make excellent cornmeal! Enjoy!
Travis man, now I'm telling you. You did an excellent job of thoroughly, thoroughly explaining corn and everything. No one does any better than you. I appreciate that about you!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
I appreciate the fact that you didn't use "click bait" on this video. By not doing that, it actually causes me to WANT TO watch it!
Thanks Craig!
I'm growing Trinity, Sugar Buns, and Sugar Baby, all SE varieties with a maturity date of 70 days or less. Because I'm 150 miles south of you I can usually plant corn February 15th. I intend to save seed from the first 4 ears that silked. The goal is to have all the sweetcorn out before the summer rains start and the army worms eat it all.
I'm guessing we're going to have a rainy summer because it's been dry as a bone this spring. Same thing happened last year.
@@LazyDogFarm I guess it's different as far north as Moultrie. On the peninsula it will rain almost every day from the middle of June until the middle of August.
I never have very good luck with corn. But now I don't have any excuse not to with all the good tips you gave.👍😁Thanks 🙏❤
You got this Leah!
Hey big Hoss, I have learned to plant a 162 cell with corn the same time I put my other corn in the ground, that way I have plenty to fill in the gaps.
That's a good backup plan!
We make kettle corn and we planted Magic Mushroom popcorn kernels just messing around and it grew like crazy.
Sweet corn here at so far
I would like some of your Glass Jem corn seed…I think my Grandchildren would love seeing it! We are planting our first corps together…I have had a garden before…but I was 5 hours away! Now we are in the same town! Yay!
The grandchildren would definitely enjoy it!
Hello Travis, gonna try a small plot of corn to refresh my seed stock this year. I have a yellow dent variety that's been in my freezer for about 15 years. I got it back then from a fellow I worked with who got it from his uncle who had been growing it for years to feed hogs. I know it sounds crazy after 15 years but my home germination test came up 90%. Wish me luck.
If kept in the freezer, corn usually holds its germ rate pretty well. 90% after 15 years is impressive though!
Glad to see Drip Depot doing well. They are only about 1 1/2 hours away from me here in Oregon.
I really like their broad selection of parts and pieces.
I've got an idea Travis have a giveaway for the extra glass gem seed! Good video.
Cool idea!
Good stuff, my sweet potato slips from Steele came today.... Corn sounds like a good idea.
Nice! Enjoy your sweet potato planting!
I also started growing Gemcorn this Year, such a beautiful kernel dispersion!
You really love sweet corn, nice treatise on it. Lumping everything under field corn: flour corn, parching corn, dent corn, flint corn. Mexican farmers have a huge variety of differing ratios of flour to flint in their kernels to provide various levels of toothyness for different varieties of tortillas for different recipes or cooking method's and there is a flour variety that with the least pressure in the teeth of a mill will explode into the finest flour you've seen and can be used to bake cakes. The focus here in the US is all on sweet corn but outside the focus is on the flour corns. Its really hard to find proper flour corn varieties here, almost all are phenotypically dent corn in catalogs here. I was thinking of importing some varieties from Mexico to gain access to better varietal selections.
Interesting stuff for sure. If you do find a "proper" flour corn variety, let us know.
I really want to try it Travis over here in Texas.
Cool. I'll try and figure something out so we can offer some.
We would love to try some in Missouri.
Thanks for letting us know. I'll try to put something together on our site.
I want that lsu gold fig plant!! Please post when you are putting these for sale. Love your videos.
Be sure to watch Friday's video as soon as it airs. We'll have the details then.
I almost planted my corn this past Sunday, and I am glad I didn't. We had about 6" of rain last night here in Missouri, and if I had planted it, I'm pretty sure it would have washed away. I'm planting My Fair Lady sweet corn this year and I am looking forward to it.
Yep 6" of rain would have definitely had an impact.
Thank you so much for your video. You answered ALL my questions! God Bless You and your family.
Glad it was helpful!
I'm growing several popcorns, miniature blue, miniature pink, and red strawberry. I am also growing some of the glass gem and some sweet corn that I do not know the variety of.
Sounds like you'll have a nice colorful mix of popcorn!
Sure wish someone would resurrect Merit Sweet Corn. That is what we always grew. Wonderful taste and so easy to shuck and clean. Last I heard they lost the crop and couldn't reproduce it. Travis, do you know anything about that variety?
I know it was discontinued, but not sure why. I have heard many good things about it, but never had the chance to grow it myself.
Happy Planting Travis 😀
Thanks Rick!
I would love some of y'all's glass gem corn!
Thanks for letting us know. We'll see what we can do.
Tried a packet of Golden Bantam sweet corn from seeds of change surprised all germinated in trays first then transplanted with a few leaves, now corn is at over 2ft tall, my first year trying corn🌽.
Nice! Hope your first go is a successful one!
We are also in Georgia and have the long growing season. We are doing Peaches and Cream, Wild Violet, and Glass gem!
Haven't heard of Wild Violet, but sounds really neat!
Really good video.
Thanks David!
LOL, that's how mine looked last year after I filled in my skips. It did well, and so will yours. I'm late to the party again this year - Just fixin' to plant mine, but better late than never. I figure it's at least warm enough now to get decent germination.
Should get very good germination now! Hope it grows well for you!
Grew me a glass gem mustache a while back.. Multicolored just like corn.
Awesome! A multicolored stache is better than no stache. lol
Same! Got here quick as possible.
Friday.
Would buy your corn Travis. Great video.
Thanks
Thanks Tom!
I wanna try the corn!!
Thanks for letting us know!
Hi Travis- I started a local see library at or local library here is western NY. I would love some glass gem seeds to add to the library.
Sounds great!
Would love to try some glass gem! I’m here in 10a and my peaches and cream is already tasseled and silked and should be ready to harvest in a couple of weeks. We did honey select last year and it did really well. I have a 25X40 bed and 13-4x4 raised beds. Your videos have improved my gardening immensely! Keep up the great videos! Thanks.
Lucky you with corn almost ready!
I enjoyed the vid on corn Travis. In my garden this year I’ve got Delectable sweet corn up in one bed. In another week or so I’ll plant Painted Mountain flour corn and 3-4 weeks after that some Silver Queen. You didn’t mention that there are about 4 kinds of field corn; flint corn which has real hard kernels, dent corn a little softer, gourdseed corn, and flour corn which has the softest kernels. I used to grow gourdseed corn because the kernels com off the cob easier and it made good cornmeal. But my mill died so the last few years I grow flour corn which mills nicely in my Nutribullet blender with the little flat blades. Love that good home grown corn bread with beans or hoe cakes with my eggs…🙂. Keep these great videos coming.
Yeah the field corn variations opens up a whole other box of corn types. I'm not as familiar with all the field corn types, but it does interest me.
Hmmm…you got me thinking, is pop corn a type of grain corn? I did mill some for cornmeal and it was ok. Also maybe you might try popping some of that Glass Gem corn.
@@everettmcdonald2088 I/4 cup popcorn in coffee grinder = 1/4 cup grits...enjoy
Good video😀 I would be interested in some Glass gem seed from you . I’ll check back later to see if you add it.
Stay tuned ...
Planted mine three times. Couldn’t keep the crows and squirrels out of it. 70% coverage at best. Hoping for a fair harvest. Love creamed field corn.
70% is better than nothing. Once it gets taller, it will look a lot better.
I'm growing Peaches and Cream.
That P1 tape is my favorite tape. I get it in 6’, 12", and 24".
It seems to fill in the gaps between emitters faster and more evenly.
Our chickens love glass gem corn, I give an ear or two with feed every day to cut down on feed cost.
Good to know!
I plant 8 inches apart in 30" spaced rows, no drip.... I get Perfect stand of corn. Trying the honey select this year.
Shoot a video. I would be interested in seeing it.
@Matthew Blackwood I guess I'd need a taller sprinkler. Last time I tried that, I ran a sprinkler all night and they were still thirsty the next day. lol
I use the same drip tape from Drip Depot last year, left it all out over the winter here in NY, Zone 7a.Of course I drained and blew out the lines, and this spring I don't have any leaks at all. Good stuff !
Nice! It seems to provide a little more even watering along the row as opposed to other brands I have used.
I frequently drive through the Rio Grande Valley, in Texas, so I get to watch some of the commercial farms progress through various crops. Most of the fields near the border, around McAllen are planted with commercial drip irrigation, rather than pivots. They do a LOT of crop rotation there, not mono-crop. Recently, lots of those fields have been planted in corn. My guess for there is that it's some variety of sweet corn. Most of the fields are planted in standard single rows, but one field is planted in double rows. Same spacing between plants, and about the same spacing between the raised irrigation berms, but double-row planted. I'll try to watch how the singles and doubles progress when I can get down there. What do you think about double rows for corn on a home garden scale? Better pollination? Better wind resistance, with tighter stalks? Obviously more stalks per acre, but wonder what effect on ears per acre or size of ears?
I've seen photos of it being done on a backyard garden scale, but I've never tried it. Seems like it works well as long as you give 3' or so between the double rows. One time I planted corn rows on a 2' spacing and got very poor pollination. My guess was that the the foliage was so thick, that the pollen couldn't fall from the top to the ears.
You explain things really well!
Thanks Rebecca!
I planted some Glass Gem corn this year and I'm not too sure I like how it is growing compared to my other heirloom corns I have been growing for years . I have never seen corn put on so many tillers before like the Glass Gem is doing . Being a Hoosier I have seen and grown a lot of corn in my life lol . Thanks for sharing !
It's a fun variety to grow, but it's not very consistent. I don't plan on growing it anymore after this past year.
Love your content and all the great information you provide. Hope you continue to have the great weather and storms stay away from your garden plots.
Thanks!
I am growing peaches and cream sweet corn right now and then planting Ohio blue and robust white popcorn at the end of the summer. I bought more seed than needed so I am planting double rows on 36” center.
Good succession plan you've got there!
I sure would love to try to grow some of that corn!
Good deal. I'll try to get some packaged.
Hi Travis! Have a random drip tape question for you I can't find an answer on...The way my my garden is set up this year, I have some rows that are 10-15' long, some 20-25' long. Can I run different lengths of drip tape off the main line for the different row lengths, or will that cause an issue with water distribution? Thanks so much! My hubby and I LOVE your videos!
You can run different lengths of tape off the mainline. There should be no issues doing that.
Hi Travis I would love to try growing corn and gem corn looks even better. Thanks
It's a fun one to grow for sure!
Travis also I hear you talk of freezing veggies! So how do you freeze like corn, beans, & okra? I'm growing sweet corn and Japanese Hulless corn
We usually don't freeze okree, we just enjoy it while we have it. We do freeze our creamed corn, peas, and butterbeans. We'll be sure to try and show that process as we do it.
Travis thank you so much for telling me stuff. I didn't know if you can freeze whole corns on the cob
@@melissakingery4393 We don't freeze the corn whole. We cut it and then freeze it. Here's a video we did last year showing the process: ruclips.net/video/d1F0JNYkicM/видео.html
Thankyou so much Travis you are awesome answering everything!
I use my DJI drone to pollinate my corn. Fly about 8”-12” over my sweet corn. Prop wash blows straight down in a yellow whirlwind.
Man that's a great idea! I'll have to try that on my channel.
I love that idea. I have a drone and may try that.
Thanks for sharing this "real world" corn growing. Had the same situation this year - maybe a bit too much rain and a wet spot or two. Replanted the holes then, two weeks later, made the mistake of hilling the rows without regard to plant height. I thought the shorter plants would continue pushing up through the soil - not considering the seeds had burned up their energy with the first sprouting. Planted some small areas a third time and will be more careful when hilling. With 6, 30-ft rows, we will have enough to share with friends and put some in the freezer. Then there is the summer / fall crop.
Yep. Our replanting stalks should be close to tall enough now to do some hilling.
I am growing Peaches and Cream again. Hopefully I get it right this year. It just came up so I got a ways to go. It is amazing just how fast corn grows when the nitrogen hits them.
It is. You can stand outside and watch it grow on these hot days!
Hello, From San Jose, California...
I would Love to Plant Some Glass Gem Seed Corn. I've Always Enjoyed Multi-Colored Corn !!!
If possible, let me know if I can purchase some of your your curnules ?!!
Will do!
Your corn looks about like mine.
Pretty sporadic.
I may have to plant a summer/fall crop to get a freezer full.
I did some fall corn last year and it was better than the spring!! Larry from Salado
@TexasPrepper2 Same here. We'll see what we get and plant more if we need to do so.
It's been quite a while since I saw you use the seeder. You must not be popping enough of that corn to have that much left over. 😀 I'm growing Yellowstone this year. Started some in a cell tray to get a jump start on the season. When that goes in, I will direct seed the 2nd succession. (the 3rd goes in 15 days after the 2nd) I can't dedicate the kind of space to corn that you can, so my corn gets hand pollinated.
We eat popcorn about 3-4 times a week. But it only takes a spoonful or so to make a big bowl, so we're slowly chipping away at it.
Would love to try the glass gem corn! My boys would really enjoy it like yours did.
I'm trying Seminole Sweet this year.
Let us know how you like the Seminole Sweet. I've heard good things about the breeder for that variety, but haven't tried any of their offerings yet. We should have some Glass Gem corn available coming tomorrow.
Thank you I needed a refresher, we are trying solstice this year in western Nc be planting next week,I’m thinking two or theee weeks later another plot of silver queen
Good plan!
I grew obsession last year. Really enjoyed it. Growing it again this year. I wouldn't mind trying some glass gem. I almost ordered some online this year but didn't get around to it. I'd like to grind a mess into meal/grits.
Obsession is a solid variety. I've never grown it, but have eaten plenty of it!
Would love to try in N Florida Panhandle. Thanks 😊
I'll see what I can do. Thanks for watching!
Planted Honey Select last weekend. First time growing this variety.
That's a good one!
Planting Jimmy Red for the first time. Hoping to try some cornmeal.
That's a great one for cornmeal!
This is my second year of using drip tape. Same one you have. Loved it. Reusing it this year. Not had any problems thanks for tips on corn
Good to hear the drip is working well for you!
Good overview on corn genetics. I'm growing a block of Painted Mountain, another multi-colored landrace selection using breeder Dave Christensen's original genetic mix. Short, Tonka tough, and with better nutrient profile than others. Also, easier to grind than Jimmy Red which I grew last year.
I'm going to try Painted Mountain this year too.
You've got my ears on this Painted Mountain. Might have to try that one at some point.
@@LazyDogFarm Baker Creek buys their seed from the breeder who has made it his life's work to develop this genetic mix from 70 landrace varieties. Interesting guy to talk to also. Visionary.
Growing glass gem corn this year. Had to start in trays and transplant as the crows will pull up any seedlings if grown by seed.
Hope it does well for you! Those pesky crows can be trouble on a plot of newly planted corn!
Thanks for that! I have grown some of the Gourmet Super Sweets available from stokes. There are lots of different varieties to suite different conditions and colours. They are a true Sh2 but they are a breeding breakthrough, they have more glucose instead of just fructose like other Sh2s. They also have very tender pericarps so they are incredibly tender. All other sweet corn pales by comparison!
Klaus
Those are all bred by a company called Illinois Foundation Seeds (www.ifsi.com/sweet-corn/products/fresh-market). I've heard really good things about their varieties, but have never tried them.
@@LazyDogFarm thank you for that insight!!!
So enjoyed this video! I have a small backyard garden so haven’t thought I could grow corn because it takes a lot of room. Thanks for All the corn growing information. I had no idea how much there is to know about that. I will be doing research to see if I can grow a small area of corn. Also thanks for the drip tape information. We are still too cold to plant warm weather corps. Your gardens look wonderful. 👍🏻🌺
You can definitely grow just a little bit of corn. Hope it does well for you!
Last two years I grew Ambrosia. We really liked it and I still have several bags in the freezer. This year we are trying Inferno Hybrid. I have 5 55 foot rows at 12 inch spacing and rows are 3 foot apart. It’s almost knee high. I started all the seed in 100 count cells and transplanted them deep when they were about 10 inches tall. A lot of work but they don’t blow over that way.
Does sound like a lot of work, but I bet your plot looks much more even than mine. lol
Hi Travis love the channel and would love to try out the Glass gem corn if you put it on the website please let me know.
Will do!
Hey Travis; can you make a video on corn?
We'll have one this Wednesday.
Following your previous success, I decided on Yellowstone for this season. I'm pretty small scale, and in containers, so I'll do hand pollinating. Along side the corn I have Delicata squash to shade the containers, and Fort Hood lima beans to climb the corn stalks. Kinda a "three sisters" planting.
You'll love that Yellowstone corn!
We would love to try some of your Glass Gem! This spring we have Astronomy Domine mix and we are planning a fall crop of Catalyst, Sh2. A hybrid bicolor from Johnny's. I would love to grow this with the Glass Gem!
I like the looks of that Catalyst. Let us know how it does for you.
I haven’t grown corn in a few years. I think I’ve learned enough from you after a year to try it again this year. Im growing Yellowstone and a miniature blue popcorn. That glass gem corn would be fun too!
That Yellowstone corn is so good! Hope you enjoy it!
Travis, I'll try planting some of the Glass Jim... in the fall. I have a couple SH2 varieties growing at the moment.. but I grind my own grits/corn meal by hand already, so will be interesting to see what I think about it.. so package some of it up, and put it on the site.
I'll try to put something together soon.
After a couple of years of poor germination with direct sow that this year I started in the 162 cell trays. I planted 5 35 ft rows. Would be harder if I tried to plant more.
Yep. It can be done on a somewhat small scale. Hope they do well for you.
@@LazyDogFarm they look great.
Hey bud. Enjoyed this video. I'm growing a Bantam sweet corn in WV zone 6b. Just pre-germinated mine and planted them this morning. I don't have quite the corn plot you do so I can pre-germinate and then go put them out but that won't always be the case.
The glass gem would probably be great up here in the summer and I bet my chicken would love it as good scratch in the fall.
Bet they would too!
Travis, question about a drip tape issue my husband and I ran into today! After seeing you on the Hoss channel for years talking about drip tape, we finally bought a drip irrigation kit from Hoss last month, got it all installed last week, and have used it just 3 times. Well, when we turned it on today to water, we found we have MAJOR leaks in SIX of our 10 rows of drip tape; and all the leaks are right at the emitter sites, like they "blew out".
The tape is buried, and we set it up just like you showed in the MANY Hoss & Lazy Dog Farm videos we watched before installing, lol! Any idea what happened? Could the pressure regulator not be working, in turn causing the tape to basically blow out at the emitter sites? We're pretty frustrated after spending the money and time to install a drip irrigation system to find we have leaks already...My hubby's ready to go back to soaker hoses, LOL!
We'll probably grab a roll of the P1 drip tape you talk about in this video, but I noticed on Drip Depot's page for the P1 drip tape it lists different emitter flow rates in GPH, (from .17 GPH to .52 GPH) which I assume depends on the tape thickness & emitter spacing. Will all of these emitter flow outputs work with the filter regulator we got from Hoss, or should we look for a particular GPH rate? Thanks so much Travis! Sure appreciate all your help with our many questions lately! You ROCK buddy! :) Cynthia & Andrew in TX
If you're getting leaks that fast, it could be that your flow rate is too high for that system. If your flow rate is over 8 gal/min at the spigot, then that nullifies the pressure regulator like it isn't even there. If that's the case, you'd want to replace your current pressure regulator with something like this that can handle up to 20 gal/min: www.dripdepot.com/item/senninger-pressure-master-three-quarter-inch-fpt-regulator-medium-flow-psi-10-psi
As far as the P1 drip tape goes, we use the 8 mil with 12" emitter spacing and 0.25 gph output and like it very much. It works with all the fittings and pieces you already have.
I went with the 15 mil Rivulis from Berry Hill Drip Irrigation (per your reccomendation). Had to buy a 4,000ft roll so I'll have it for a while. I also got some of their screw on row ends. I have been extremely happy with it so far. Not a single major leak or geyser yet. And I had them every time I watered with the old stuff from the kit.
Rivulis is good tape too. And the 15 mil should last you quite a few seasons.
I would be most grateful to try to grow some glass gem corn if you would be willing to share some. I am in Suffolk Virginia in grow zone 8A.
I'll try and get some packaging together for it.
It's been my experience that the shorter younger stalks whether they catch up on size or not, will tassel about the same time that the older more mature stalks do...I walk up and down the rows shaking/ bumping the stalks, just for good measure...I have Incredible sweet corn & some jumbo corn ( he bought it years ago,& doesn't know the name) i got from a farmer friend... .I like my drip depots dripline . It worked well last year!
Never hurts to help the wind with the pollinating!
Hey love your work an videos. Do you mind telling me were you get your 162 seed trays. Thanks in advance
Right here: www.greenhousemegastore.com/containers-trays/trays-flats/proptek-26-13-propagation-trays
Really enjoying the videos. I'm looking forward to growing Yellowstone, once I get my grass killed off and our clay, which is about 1/2 an inch under the grass amended. Just got in our double wheel hoe and attachments Going to broad fork in some biochar we made and some gypsum too, then use the cultivator tines to work in a few trailer loads of compost. I'm also killing off a 25 x 70 plot (with weed block) for Dent Corn this late summer/fall. Thanks for all the vids.
Enjoy your new garden prep! Sounds like you've got a solid plan.
Glass gem corn supposedly pops great.
I need to try popping some of it!
Travis how often do you water your sweet corn. I am putting in drip tape like you use. I also think that is the best way to water. Many thanks happy Mother's Day.
Assuming no rainfall, I'm watering with the tape every other day for 3-4 hours.
Wow, I learned a lot about sweet corn. If I understood that right, all corn would be true to type as long as there isnt any cross pollination from another type? Basically, sweet corn is like an heirloom so to speak?
Not quite. My explanation was a bit of a simplification. There are other traits than just the sweetness traits I discussed. Some of the older varieties are heirlooms, but most of the supersweet varieties are going to be hybrids.
@@LazyDogFarm Gotcha , Thanks
I've been growing Trinity sweet corn for the past 3 years, it's the only sweet corn I've found that ripens in my area and tastes good. I'm going to try Painted Mountain this year, I don't know if dry corn will ripen before frost around here, but the only way to find out is to grow some. Hopefully home grown corn flour is in my future.
Homegrown corn flour is the best!
That's some seriously nerdy corn discussion. What sprays do you recommend for worms to someone concerned about organic growing?
This stuff right here is organic and is the ticket for corn earworms: amzn.to/3KNZRKz
Just make sure you spray it on the silks where the worms are.
I’d love to grow the glass gem corn if you have some available. Currently growing Serendipity and it’s tasseling now. We’ve had some hot days already and I think it’s tasseling a little early, but hopefully get a few decent ears.
I've heard good things about Serendipity. Let us know how you like it.
Hi Travis , really love your channel; I have a ? Should I be storing my popcorn in the freezer for storage ? Thanks Kim
You don't have to store it in the freezer. You could probably get away with just an airtight container in the pantry. But the freezer seems to work very well for us.
I have never grown corn and I'm fairly new to gardening but that glass corn looks beautiful. I would not mind growing about 10 stalks. What all can it be used for is it an edible or would it have to be ground up to be used?
It is edible. It's technically considered a popcorn, but could be ground as well for corn meal.
Im in Louisiana when is the latest i can plant corn my first crop didn't make
You can plant now throughout the summer. I've planted in late August and still did well.
Im in Mo. I have always planted Incredible. We love the flavor of it. Not in the ground yet due to about 4 inches of rain for the last week. Next week is looking a lot better so hope to get it in. When should you start spraying for worms on sweet corn, when you see silks first appear or later than that?? Love all your videos.
I would definitely start spraying as soon as silks appear. But if you start seeing damage on the plants before silks appear, go ahead and start spraying then.
How many true leaves does the corn need to have before you side dress it with Chilean nitrate? As well as the second application as well.
Not sure about leaves, but you can do it when the corn is 12-18" tall.
You can grow bush beans with your corn for nitrogen
My understanding is that the nitrogen produced by the beans will not be available to a crop that is grown simultaneously with it. The nitrogen fixed by the beans isn't available to the soil until those bean roots are tilled into the soil and the nitrogen stored in the bean root nodules is released.
@@LazyDogFarm There is a term I can't think off where in the theory companion planting where if you plants crops close enough together their roots grow together and the feed off each other's rot bases so for example tomato grown close with basil the tomato takes up the basil chemicals which deters hornworms and improves tomato flavour, similar the theory with corn and beans grown close together the roots will join and the corn will feed off the nitrogen in the legume root nodes whilst it's still alive you won't get and beans but you will get better corn that's the theory anyway
How'd you think gem corn would do in MICHIGAN?? I'd like to try it.
Should do fine as long as you planted early enough so it had enough warm days to grow.
I have corn that has tasseled already at around 3-4 foot, here in Florida 9B. I did side dress and hit it with 20-20-20…what did I do wrong? I do have cobs forming on nearly every plant.
Dang. That's short. But sometimes it makes just fine when it's short like that. From my experiences, corn tassels short when it didn't have something it needed (water or nitrogen) while it was growing.
@@LazyDogFarm - here is a quick video I made to show the issue. ruclips.net/video/fGWsht-3TME/видео.html - I may put a succession planting of corn in my onion plot once the onions are all out of the ground. I guess on the planting, I will fertilize it every other week, or more? In my current plot I fertilized every two weeks. FYI: Chilean Nitrate is what I side-dressed with.
Where do you get your soil tests done?
Our local Ag Extension office offers them through the University of GA.
Speaking of watering, I recently tested the pH of my city water supply and also rain water. My city water had a pH of 8.2 while rain water clocks in between 6.2 and 5.7. I would assume that plants would naturally want slightly acidic water as opposed to the alkaline city water. Do have experience with water pH or knowledge?
I've never checked the pH of our water. I guess I've never really worried about it because it's the only water we've got, so not much I can do to change it. We just focus on the soil pH which we can control via our gardening methods.
@@LazyDogFarm the only reason I tested the water is because I also have a small aquaponics system. The pH of the aquaponics system water is too alkaline which prompted me to test my water source. I have noticed that my garden plants seem to respond better to rain water than normal irrigation. Cheers.
