Great format on all your videos. The wife gives a little extra pazazz when she is on. Look forward to each one. Don't forget to hug a dad every now and then.
They are not around forever.
Thanks for watching Tom!
Those popcorn ears are supposed to be that size. You can't harvest that popcorn until it dries down totally dead like field corn. The black layer has to form first just like field corn under the kernels when still on the, dry cob. The ears will drop and hang down like dry field corn. It will be a shiny bright orange at first then get much duller when the moisture gets down. Hard dry kernels. It will be hard and dry just like the corn you pop now from the store when you shell it off the cob. I use to grow 500 acres of popcorn a year here in Indiana for Weaver Popcorn Company.
Thanks for the info!
Good to know. Seems like the popcorn ears I've seen on photos in the past were 5-6" long or shorter. I guess maybe the commercial varieties like these are longer? Thanks for the tips on drying as well.
@@LazyDogFarm yes the regular traditional varieties or commercial varieties are much bigger. Of course good fertilizer and water help too. The ears will shrink down some when drying. Also, there is no such thing as hulless. That is the outside protection around the kernel. Some varieties may be more tender. All your crops look great!
Get that flame weeder cleanup on film. That’ll be awesome footage!!!!!
Planning on it!
It all looks good Travis. Crazy year with the lack of rain and then more than you can say grace over.
Yep. Go from one extreme to the next.
Great Job, We like that Air Fryer Paulette and Edward in Michigan
Thanks Edward and Paulette!
Really enjoy the cooking format added in the vids, the extra info from the kitchen is greatly appreciated :)
Glad you enjoy it!
I've been out of state for over a month.... my Fathers funeral and taking care of his estate...I usually always have some helpful, interesting or smart alleck comment for Travis's vids and I'm back lol. Put any kind of spice you want on those okra...even traditional salt, pepper, milk, cornmeal etc, it works great! I don't have an air fryer, but the oven works like a charm if you don't want to mess around with the frying mess, just put them in single layer, not mounded up, I usually leave em whole....course, I love okra and can eat it raw right off the plant ...slime and all :) The oven method has no slime when done if it bugs you, just juicy/crunchy good ole okra. Another way I found is to fry sliced rounds with no coating...just salt & pepper or whatever you want and believe it or not if you do it right = no slime either...how simple is that. Also...keep your dried popcorn in the freezer or the bugs will get it....thanks for the vid gg :)
Sorry to hear about your father. And thanks for the okra and popcorn tips.
Thanks for the video Travis. Those Okra fries looked tasty, I think it is time to get an airfryer ! Thanks for the video, take care.
You'll love the air fryer Jerry!
Pole beans do keep producing. I'm growing Rattlesnake this year and I see no end in the production... yet.
Ours will stop blooming in the middle of summer, but sometimes they'll get back going in the fall if they make it through the summer.
Definitely gonna try those okra fries! Maybe with some garlic salt
Yes!
Garden tour was encouraging. More Air fryer and Fermenting videos please
Will do!
Oh my! what a ear of corn!
They didn't look that big sitting on the corn stalk, but I was impressed.
Have you grilled okra? Soak wooden skewers in water and take a pair of them and thread whole okra like rungs on a ladder-them brush with oil and season to your taste-we use seasoned salt and pepper. throw on the grill and flip occasionally with tongs. Amazing.
Have not tried them on skewers like that, but I'll have to try it now.
Great tour of the garden but especially enjoyed the cooking portion of the video; gotta try the okra fries! :-)~
Glad you enjoyed it Herb!
Use to use liquid 7, but now I use Bonide 8. Very happy with how well it works! I choose the nuclear option. I like it to kill on contact, not feed and fatten them up on "organic" sprays. I put way to much work in the garden to take a chance on losing everything. 👍
Haven't tried that one, but I believe I have seen it at the big box stores.
I’m trying to sell my wife on growing okra next season, this video really helped! I think you might have sold us on the air fryer too!
The air fryer is so useful for just about anything fresh from the garden. Once you have one and get used to using it, you'll wondered how you lived without it.
Travis, please go into a lot of detail when, how how to tell when the corn is dry enough to harvest and how to harvest and store your popcorn. Thanks Buddy.
I'll try. This is my first time growing popcorn, so I'll be learning along with you.
That's the biggest popcorn I have ever seen! Enjoyed the tour!
Thanks guys!
Gardens still looking awesome as always, I have a little 25x12 and 15x15 plot that I am trying to make the best out of. Have my second rotation of squash zucchini okra and cucumber trying to get some production. Put in another three rows of silver King and it is up about a foot hopefully it will make. Glad to see you are up and walking around better today. I bought all the hardware for drip lines next year, still using soaker hoses and overhead this year. Ready for some fall and winter time crop planting videos 🤣
Once you get used to the drip, it's a game changer. Thanks for watching Michael.
@@LazyDogFarm yeah only about 3 hours away from you up here between Statesboro and Savannah
Hey Travis, just picked a test ear of glass gem and it's super narrow with a slight (really slight) few kernels that are coloring in. I've got a ways to go but I learned from a Popcorn farmer that you can grow them side by side with sweet corn bc they germinate differently! So he grows massive popcorn for his income and throws in two rows of sweet on the perimeter. Thought that was cool bc I was worried about timing germ. Anyway I'm psyched we may have a successful gem Popcorn for the kids up here in Philly. Good luck!
Very cool. I like that idea of combining the two in a plot.
Yup. Especially since it seems you get a lot of 🍿 from a small amount of ears. The gem will make good Christmas gifts to give.
Looking good buddy! I love seeing gardens in all phases, so thanks for the tour! Okra fries are on my list! A shake of garlic powder and a few pepper flakes never hurt anybody!
Never has, never will!
Great idea with the Okra fries. We bought an air fryer this year and it's almost like when microwaves came out. We use it daily.
Glad you jumped on the air fryer bandwagon!
Have some of the jambalaya planted, if it takes off I will have to give that a shot looks delicious. I did the same thing to my red ripper peas cut them off at the base about three days letting them die back just could no keep up with the aphids even with spinosad and Neem oil
Yeah tough to keep up with those insect reproduction rates this time of year.
A new way to eat okra! Thanks, my hubby loves it (me too). We made a whole meal on just okra fries!! Keep sharing those recipes! Loved the garden tour.
Awesome! Glad y'all enjoyed the okree fries Sherri!
Great job.
Thanks!
Dang those okra fries sound DEEEELISH! Maybe toss a little lemon pepper on them, but I do like the lime idea. So I still have time to grow okra? Kraft has a lemon herb dressing, I'm thinking of putting some in a spritzer bottle. Great garden tour again. Can't wait to see those cover crop plots fill up too. You bought that innoculent for the peas through someone else though didn't you? I mean not through Green?I gotta go back and find that so I can order the same time I get my red rippers ordered! Thanks again for another great video Travis!
I can't remember if I got that inoculant from Amazon or if it was a part of a previous Johnny's order, but lots of places carry that brand. I think you've still got time for one more round of okree if you're in 8b or below.
Travis That Okra is also good done on the grill the same way but I leave them whole. Olive Oil, Salt and Pepper and sometimes we put Olive Oil and Tony's Creole on them.
Sounds like a plan!
My, what big ears you have! Good Lord!
Hah! Good one Carol!
I don't have an air fryer, but that's exactly how I season and then oven roast okra until it's slime free and mostly dehydrated. So good!
Good deal!
I make okra fries in the oven the same way you prepared them except I add thyme
I've got thyme in the garden. Gonna have to try that!
Gotta try those okree fries. thanks for sharing the recipe.
Thanks for watching John!
I would love to see a video of cleaning out/recovering a plot that needs a good amount of clean up.
I would love to be in good enough shape to show you how to do that. Maybe in a few more weeks.
@@LazyDogFarm yes of course, I know you aren't physically able to now, but I would love to see the process and glean from it once you're well! 😃
Popcorn makes good grits. You can't grind it with man-made stones, but if you have something with steel grinding plates they will do just fine... and of course you can make popcorn. I have ground a good bit of it by hand fresh just before cooking it using a Country Living mill... it's a bit of work, but in 15 minutes you can grind enough grits for your family's breakfast for sure. Popcorn is pretty tough to grind, so just drop the idea of asking your kids to help... they will need a few more years before they are ready for that. Hint if you decide to do this... buy the extension arm... you are gonna want it.
Thanks for the tips. Looks like we'll have plenty for experimentation.
Wow! Popcorn is really doing good. Can you please send me some of the cobs after yall shell it. You won't believe what I use em for.
Sure. Just remind me and I'll try to do that.
@@LazyDogFarm we can trade out or pay you guys . Yes I'll remind you later thanks so much.
I like to dehydrate okra,Coat the okra with a little oil, season with some salt,Black & red pepper, garlic powder...
I can get down with that!
Thank you for this suggestion! I just packed up 10 pounds today. Froze 5 and cut and breaded the other. Picked a 5 gallon bucket today and tomorrow will be about the same. I will be dehydrating that bucket full tomorrow!
@@humbleservantshomestead7974 I have a video of how i do it... not trying to promote myself but the video better explains... thanks!
I tried the okra fries, they are great..
Glad you like them Larry!
Awesome! Love watching the cooking segments!!!!
Thanks for watching Xavier!
Okra on the grill is my favorite, touch of olive oil and a bit of seasoning..skewer and grill
Sound delish!
WOW WHAT A CORN!!!
I know right?!
Great Video !
Thanks Linda!
You can sell it to people to make seeds sprouted teas for the organic garden
Good tip!
Beautiful gardens
Thanks Gail!
We are getting our fall garden started. It will be our largest so far, 50 x 34. We are using starts for some of our plants. How long from germination to transplanting? Or, from planting to transplanting?
Your popcorn and sweet potatoes are amazing!!!
For most things, you're looking at 5-6 weeks from seed to viable, ready to go in the ground, transplant.
Your garden looks awesome
Thanks Momma J!
Try adding a little smoked paprika and parmesan cheese on it. yummy
Thanks for the suggestion! That sounds good!
Checking in to say what's up fam!! Been too busy picking every night. Been picking 15lbs of mountain vineyards a night last week or so
Good to see you back here Preston! Glad those Mountain Vineyards are producing well for you.
I ordered the book- it is a great book!
Glad you're enjoying it!
I am looking forward to trying this recipe! I make my own coriander powder, roast some cilantro seeds and grind in a coffee grinder. Thank you for your videos.
I need to making my own coriander like that!
I am in the south also and I totally agree. The only way I can even get any peas of any kind is to spray with liquid 7. I have plenty of bees and other pollinators throughout the rest of my garden. The popcorn would be a cool thing for the kids vegetable sales. They’d probably sell out of those in a jiffy. 🌽 🍿
Yeah we may bag some of the popcorn and let them sell some that way.
I only really like fried okra but you have convinced me to get an air fryer lol oh i have to grow okra i guess too lol! Great update on the garden and i hope you’re healing well!
You'll love the air frier. So much easier than having to buy oil.
What! no slime...? That's a plus.
Certainly!
Wood u like some of the black peas seeds
Sure! We could give them a try. Our PO Box is in the video description.
Cajun seasoning on the okra.
Good idea. I'll add some NuNu's next time.
I purchased the book. Thanks. I'm from the south and grew up eating okra. I love okra and I purchased the JAMBALAYA okra you mentioned in one of the earlier video. I haven't planted it yet, hopefully next year. This year is my first time gardening and I love it except for the WORMS.
Hope you enjoy the book! Lots of good stuff in there!
Hi Travis.. Popcorn is hugh. Lol. I need an air dryer. That okra looked delicious.. thanks..
Once you get an air fryer, you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner. They're quite handy.
I'm jealous, that okry looks good.
Oh it was!
Dam worms they like popcorn too
Garden looks great. Don't heat your cattle panels to much, it will make them rust. ✌
Thanks for the tip Mark. Hopefully I can just graze them without too much continual heat.
Another great vid
Thanks Sharon!
What variety of Popcorn was that?
This one right here: www.johnnyseeds.com/vegetables/corn/dry-corn/robust-997-f1-corn-seed-93.html#q=popcorn&lang=en_US&start=1
@@LazyDogFarm Thanks so much I sure enjoy your vids, Great info and tips.
have you hear of floret flower farm? they grow their own seeds
I have not. You have a link?
Luv your okra recipes, thanks.
My pleasure 😊
Liquid Sevin is certainly not the most toxic option out there and you've put some thought into the least dangerous spray timing. Nothing organic will even put a dent in the pea curculio bug. Brooklyn now knows about her upcoming appointment with Mr. Tiller so you may be forced to extradite her from Orlando.
Haha! She'll be back tomorrow and we have an intense heat wave over the next few days. So probably going to wait for that to pass before we jump back on the tiller.
Mmmm looks gooð
Totally trying the okra fries. Looks yummy.
Let us know how you like them Linda.
Yum! We've made okree similar to this for a few years now. I toss whole pods in olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder and smoked paprika. Then air fry for 15ish minutes. I also love to switch it up with some chipotle powder if it's just the grown ups enjoying them. Sooo good!! I even freeze whole pods just to enjoy this easy side dish during the coldest days of winter.
I like spicy ... Brooklyn and the kids not so much. Might have to make my own spicy batch.
Oh that sounds good too!
I have had to break down and buy the spray seven for squash bugs on my pumpkins! Nothing organic has worked for the past two growing seasons sadly! Good luck to yours and I hope one treatment is all I’ll need for my pest as well :) can’t pick that many leaves clean of squash bugs/eggs.
We just planted some fall pumpkins as well (video coming Friday on that) and we might use it on the jack-o-lantern types that we don't plan on eating. Gotta do what you gotta do sometimes!
Try 100 percent cold pressed neem
Thanks for the tip!
@@LazyDogFarm neem is organic as well.
I was surprised this morning to see a "Granny Cantrell's Tomato" on the plants put out in early May. The heat have kept them from setting. This one I found is about the diameter between a quarter and half dollar. I'd never grown this variety before. Hopefully I'll get a nice production in the fall off of the plants. I should be able to collect some seeds for next year, but first need to see if I like them. That popcorn ear was super long. Today we had heavy smoke from fires in and around the Sierra Nevada. I need to get my Chinese Broccoli started soon.
Y'all stay safe over there! Won't be long before it's fall seed starting time for us.
Great healthy snack..wonder if I could grow ocra in Maine???
That might be tough. You'd definitely need to transplant them. They like hot weather to really start producing. I'd say you need 60 days or so of hot weather after they've been transplanted.
I'm guessing you need a special sheller for popcorn. A few years ago, I threw nearly all of my ears away because it was so hard to get off the cob.
Yeah I might need to look into that sooner than later. I was thinking I could just rub them off the ear like I've done with field corn in the past.
I'm definitely trying some okree fries.
Go for it!
How much ears can be produced from each corn plant especially yellow truckers favorite
We usually get no more than two ears per stalk. And sometimes the second ear can be a bit of a runt.
Seven is cool use lighly
Do you have problems with aphids on your peas? If so, does the liquid 7 control them? Our purple hull peas are covered with aphids, and so far nothing organic has worked to get rid of them.
I have had some serious issues with aphids in the past on them. And yes, Liquid Sevin will take care of them.
Get some lady bugs in there wipe them right out
Also as far as aphids go you really need to use something systemic because they are really good at hiding from contact kills
Cumin is a good substitute for coriander, I'd do cumin, cayenne, and garlic powder on my okree. Your hot crops are all looking so good, it's been a way too wet and humid summer down here. Please share the video of burning the beans on the trellis. I can't burn anything where I live so I'll live vicariously through your blaze :^)
I'll definitely share! Can't wait!
@@LazyDogFarm Ah, a fellow pyromaniac.
If you gotta spray, then you gotta spray. Its better to spray than to lose a crop.
Word!
Hey Travis I may have asked this before but I didn’t see a response I’m growing jimmy red field corn. I need a sheller and grinder I know that. But how long do I leave it on the plant before picking? Should I let it dry on the stalk? Also after picking what steps do I need to take before grinding to eat
You'll want to let it dry on the stalk, so you'll wait until the shucks look dead. After shucking it, sometimes it helps to let it dry on the cob for a few days. In the past we've put it in front of a fan to accelerate that process. The fan also helps to keep weevils from chewing on it. Once it's shelled and in the freezer, you don't have to worry about the weevils.
@@LazyDogFarm ok so let it dry on the plant. Once the corn is dry pick it shuck it’s and put it in front of a fan for a few days or until fully dry. Then shel the curnals off the cob and freeze them. After freezing them then I grind it? And how do I store it grinded up? I’d like to grind it all at once as to not have it taking up room in the freezer for to long. I’m sorry if I seem dumb but there’s no videos on this other than that old one from u and greg.
@@LazyDogFarm thanks for being patient with me
@@martinandrews8496 Once it's ground, you can store that in the fridge or freezer as well. You'll probably want to put it in a ziplock bag to keep it dry.
What happens if you don't harvest sweet potatoes at 90-100 days? What would happen if 130-150 days?
I've done that in years past when it just seemed too hot to dig sweet potatoes. If you leave them there too long, some of them will rot because of too much water. Some will get the size of a football and start to split. So it can be done, but ideally you'll get better-looking sweet potatoes closer to the recommended harvest date.
Thanks Travis... I will reduce water and get to them when I can. ..I have a lot this year haha.
Have you ever grown the pubscens variety of peppers? The hard part for me was to keep them alive for 3+ years to get a full production off of them. I would tent them over the winter, grow in 100 gallon horse troughs, and use oil heater to keep warm through the winter. The manzano on a 3+ year old plant could produce 500 to 1000 pounds of fruit. These are some of the best peppers I've ever grown. Start the seed in November or earlier indoors. They can put out 15' vines on the hairy leaves, with purple flowers and black seeds. The best tasting red pepper (if you don't get into the hot part of the pepper) is 'Ecaudaorian Red Pepper for Hell', but if you get into the hot part it is amazingly hot but not anywhere near a Ghost or similar. These grow at 5000 to 6000 foot up in the Andes and can handle low temperatures. I've seen people sell 6 manzano variety of peppers for $5 - well worth it even though they are not that big (fit in your hand nicely).
Have not grown any of the super hot peppers. I've tried, but didn't have good luck with seed germination in trays.
@@LazyDogFarm Pubescens are not all super hot, but very flavorful thick walled and juicy. Once you get hooked trying to grow them, you can become addicted to the high quality of the fruit.
We are entering our 91° to 102° hot s summer days. I really want to grow some winter squash. Maybe a few pumpkins. Then thinking about a few summer squash.
Got any hints?
Anything I can do to help them make a crop?
I just planted some pumpkins. We'll see what happens. Gotta have some lowered expectations when growing them in the late summer/early fall.
The ears on your popcorn are super long. You'll be hosting a few movie and popcorn nights for the kids and friends this fall. Are you planning to use a flame weeder on the green beans when they dry out?
Yes. I'll be using a handheld propane torch. Ordered it from Amazon a few days ago and waiting on it to get here (and the beans to dry). Should be fun!
Why are you not on Row by Row.
I was advised not to truthfully answer that question right now. Maybe I can provide more details in the future.
Yes, I make okra fries in my air frier and love them! So much easier than frying! I put onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper on mine. I will try the lime. Thanks.
I'm gonna have to try the garlic and onion powder next time.
I didn’t know liquid 7 is bad I used it on my corn And squash this year what’s so bad about it?
It kills bees 🐝
@@p.singletary6702 well I figured that much I only sprayed my squash twice right before they flowered and a month or so later and I made sure to spray in the evening and only around the base of the plants and on the dirt
@Trevor Holland It's not the most bee-friendly option out there. As such, we try to use it as little as possible and only in a "rescue" situation.
👍👍
Thanks for watching Phud!
I have some black cower peas
Oh yeah? Never seen black ones.
I have some black, brown and gray ones
I have some black, brown and gray one
The seed came from Alabama I live in TN
Garlic powder on that okree
Good idea!
Going to try the air fried okra chips.
Let us know how you like them.
grow the peas in the no till garden next year to see what happens
