@@LoginHelps same issue here with my new phone, SPEAKER does NOT lock-on while using Messenger. Thus, I am unable to hear the conversation unless I place the phone on my ear. Defeats using video calling! I've tried all above suggestions.... ANY other ideas to solve the ON/OFF SPEAKER issue?
Yeah, no this didn't solve my problem. I suddenly got a message on messenger saying my audio is turned off but I have gone all through messenger settings and phone settings and don't see any "audio" on or off button. 🤷♀️ The messenger voice clip stopped working as well.

Every notification setting is on, still not receiving sound for messages.
try to un-install and re-install the messenger app, update the messenger app or you can update the device you are using.

Both of my notifications were on but I still get no sound...
My video and audio were both working fine but a block covered my video screen stating my audio wasn't working
This does not help me with my speaker! It has stopped working on Messenger. Ie. When I want to have a speaker chat with someone.
This happend to me but i tried to turn off my Silent mode and the sound came back (for apple users only)
