My mom's and dad's family ancestry both have strong roots in MA and CT. I am a descendant of 21 of the founders of Hartford, also from Gov. John Webster, Rev John Davenport (founder of New Haven), Lt. Gov. Stephen Goodyear of New Haven Colony, the Dudley family of Guilford and many other early settlers and founders of towns and cities, such as Haddam. The very first person hanged for witchcraft in the colonies, Alse Young, was my mom's ancestor. She was executed in 1647 in Hartford. Two others on my mom's side, John and Joanne Carrington were hanged in 1651. Rev. Thomas Hooker was twice my 11th great-granduncle. Many of my ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 were from Connecticut.
I visited CT for the first time in 2013. I went back again this last summer in June. It's a beautiful state from what I've seen. I hope to get back up there again soon.

My mom's 10th great grandfather George Stocking (1582-1683) came over from England on the Griffin in 1633 and was a member of the Hooker Party (Dissenters) who founded Hartford in 1636. His son Deacon Samuel was one of the founders of Middletown, CT (one of the 3 signers of the Indian Deed). While there were about 100 in the Hooker party that came down the CT river to found Hartford, I think the founders number on the marker is 13 but I haven't made the trip down that down town alley to see it but my mom (1918- ) has. By the way George Stocking lived to 101 and mom (Rhea Doris Stocking is doing well at 98).

The Royal Charter of 1662 came just after Cromwell died and Charles II was restored to power. Charles' tendency for tolerance made this charter possible, but his brother, the future James II would pay dearly for their politics by the Whigs.
