I am going to miss the live painting and will have to watch it later. My loving wife wants to run errands so I must see to her. I look forward to returning home later and watching you create another great masterpiece while at the same time showing us how to create our own by following your great example. You are the best. Thank you for everything you do Paul.
Hi Aaron - hope you've had a chance to see the video by now. It's a fun painting and I'll post a link to the reference photo as soon as Pixabay finishes processing it - Take care and say hit to the wife. Paul 😃
I love the way you use mixed media Paul. At my art class, I was amazed to hear people say that they didn't know they could use acrylic to do the underpainting, and paint over it with oils. I am sure many of your followers will find this useful. I use it on almost all of my paintings. Love the cottage. I have painted many of the cottages to be found in Ireland.
Brilliant Jack. I'm so pleased to have opened up the idea of using mixed media in oils. Maybe you'll do your own traditional Irish cottage painting soon. With an autumn touch of course😃😎
Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to hear that you noticed the details in my work. I've uploaded the reworked cottage photo to my Pixabay page. As soon as its approved I'll add the link to the description - Very best wishes and lots of arty hugs Paul 😃🥰
I try not to let one aspect hold me back from enjoying anything I want to do. So trace it or do anything you want to keep on enjoying your art Best wishes - Paul
Thank you Peter for being such a great cheer leader for the videos. Its very much appreciated. Next video I think will be a Bob Ross classic - but which one? See you soon - Paul 😃😎
You’ve captured the magic and essence of Autumn, my absolute favorite time of year in this now much beloved painting (maybe now in my top three Ranson paintings) Thank you Paul 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 you are wonderful.
Wow, thank you, Kenneth. I've a few more autumn scenes in mind but it will soon be winter and more snow. In fact its a snow scene that's on the easel behind me now! 😃
Hi, Paul! I LOVE this video! I always told myself I wasn't going to paint barns or houses because I knew I wouldn't be able to get the lines straight! Being able to use a tracing and masking tape will make all the difference! I can do that! I am definitely going to follow your tutorial and paint this painting! It's one of my favorite pictures you've created so far! I love all the colors you used. I like the way you left the building looking old. I loved the underpainting with acrylic and the highlighting with oils. And I really appreciated your tip on not giving up on a painting! I have a 16x20 autumn scene in the basement which I started maybe 5 years ago, and never finished. I haven't been able to finish it or throw it away, so I just keep it! But I decided after watching this video, I'm going to finish it! It has all the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and some wonderful limey greens and chocolatey browns... It's the most beautiful autumn picture I've ever seen, and When I finish it I know it's going to be one of the favorite paintings I ever do. So thank you for providing the perfect encouragement I needed to finish it up! Have a wonderful week! Best wishes from Utah!
The autumn picture I told you about was my first painting! And then, because of health issues, I didn't get to paint anymore until last year. I have finished one oil painting... Well, I didn't actually finish it! I gave it to my brother for a present before I got all the details in the foreground! I liked it so much I was afraid I would ruin it, so I gave it away! 😅 So I really do feel like a very beginner! I'm really loving the chances I get to paint! Painting has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. Thank you for guiding me along the journey! Your tutorials help me more than anyone else's! Thank you for all the time and energy you spend making videos for us!! More best wishes from Utah!
Hi Erica, Yes, go dig out that old painting and see if it's salvageable or inspirational. There's something OK about discarding a painting that just didn't quite hit the spot. I sometimes chop mine up and keep the bit I like. 😃
Hello, Paul! So glad to catch up after a few days.. and I love your tutorial here very much. I haven’t put enough thought into the colors that can really help the whole canvas. I really like buff titanium and very pale grey’s. I really also love hearing your story about the artist with only one brush! Reminds me of meeting a very wonderful oil painter who taught me to be less timid about exploring colors! Thank you for your tutorial, and I’m starting to use refurbished fan-to- grass effects brush! 🥰💕🤗🖌️🎨have a wonderful week.. I had a great idea. I want to see sometime how to paint a few autumnal trees with a storm cloud cluster behind them- with sunshine bursting through on the bright fall hues! I saw that yesterday and it was mesmerizing! Art hugs to you!!
Hi Stephanie- those little memories really stick don't they. I'm pleased the refurbished fans are working out well too. We've had a week or two of grey clouds and bright bursts of sunlight. I'll try and capture a few of the trees against that sky for reference. I want to visit a local park called Sheffield Park. It's a wonderful few acres of spectacular lakes and an arboretum that's so bright and full of colour. Any day now we'll have the first cold snap that triggers the leaf peeping! Now if the weather plays nice. Hope everyone is safe in Florida. Sending everyone good wishes. Have a great week too. - Paul 😃😃
We’re always running around doing errands on Sunday since it’s midday for us in Maine when you go live, but greatly look forward to watching your videos as our Sunday night feature... Diving in now, comment to follow… ♥️🙏🏻
Trying to get my autumn garden clean up and pruning done so I can paint. And............I have chosen this one to do. It will be my maiden voyage into underpainting. You're such a gentle and knowledgeable teacher. Thank you 😀
Hi Adrienne - yes, our garden needs a tidy up too. I think you'll enjoy the process of using acrylics to begin a painting. It helps with the layout and makes the addition of oils a little less daunting. Have fun on your maiden voyage 😃🥰
I've just watched your video as usual, it's enjoyable and instructive...and the originality of painting with a sponge adds a wonderful touch...bravo Paul, thank you for sharing.
Hi Corinne - lovely to hear from you. I've had this idea for a while so its nice to paint and share it with you. Hope you have a painting in mind you want to do too. Paul 😃
Thanks Paul. Lovely painting! Love to see how you are progressing. I often try to take things almost as far as I can with acrylics before getting to the oils.
Hello, and thanks, i got quite a few little things out of, looks like elevations in grass, and paths, and also, path can be same as a river flow🎨🥼to me when i painting, its knowing when to walk away and say its dun and hopefully not overworked🎀
Yes, that magic moment when we say 'its done'. Leonardo Da Vinci is credited with saying 'Art is never finished, only abandoned' I think he was right. I've sure had a few that took way longer than I could have expected. Strangely these are not always my favourite scenes or paintings. Happy painting - Paul 🤔🤗😃
Hi and thank you for your kind comments. The canvas prep was simply a buff coloured acrylic paint. This just tones the canvas and makes for a softer pastel painting. Changing the colour of a canvas is a great way of making the painting look different before you even start. Check out my recent cloud painting on a burnt sienna canvas. Happy Painting - paul 😃
Loved this tutorial. Can I do it just with oils. I know it will take awhile to do the underpainting I would probably have to use shop towels to help dry between layers
Absolutely Lynnette. I would love to have the time to paint in all the time. I know Kevin Hill uses shop towels to blot off the excess oils so this would be a great application. Or do the underpainting and leave it to dry a little over a couple of days. Have fun whatever you decide to do. - Paul 😃
