Yeah, it's annoying, bordering on gaslighting. Lmao. Not sure he realises that they're popular films of their day, and people over 35 exist. "Let me reveal my secret stash of unwatched blockbusters..." shit 😂
Yeah, a lot of these are definitely aimed at those too young to see them at the time they came out at the cinema and weren't the biggest of hits when they did like this one. I remember going to see it, and loving it, but none of my friends saw it.
@@alfredthegreat9543 I picked it up at the video store. He keeps picking films that were on video store shelves when VHS ruled the world. Fuck, I'd stop after work and pick up three movies go home and watch them then return them the next day and get three more. I sure do miss video stores.
Not just you. I saw "Innerspace," and many others in this series. But then I'm 74; and I saw almost every movie that came out, up until Hollywood tanked in the early 2000s. Since then I've drifted away from it. Just got back from "Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood," which I saw only because my significant other wanted to see it ("Yes, dear...") and the last one before that was Judi Dench in "Philomena" in 2013. That's two movies I've seen in theaters in six years. Maybe if more of them were like "Innerspace," it would be different.
Famous movie directed by famous 80s director, won an Oscar, you might have to rename this series because many many people have seen this well-known movie
Saw this in the movie theater with my Mom when I was 10. That day is a very special memory for me. This movie will always have a soft spot in my heart.
Innerspace The Best Movie I did see. One of my favorite Joe Dante movies and Martin Short is so funny and Dennis Quaid is great actor and the special effects are awesome.
I saw this in the theaters. I remember the part where Roberto Picardo is reverting back to Martin Short, the facial expressions both actors were making along with the special effects and camera work...I was laughing so hard I couldn't breathe through the entire scene.
Had pretty much forgotten this movie until watching this tribute, and ended up downloading and re-watching it today. Had it on VHS back in the day and watched many times, but that was 30+ years ago. Still a good watch today, with some good visual effects, strong leading cast, and of course an intriguing story. Very Amblin-esque family-friendly harmless fun movie which deserved a better run at the box office, but as said here it did very well as a video tape rental, which is how I watched it many times back then (or I just recorded it off cable tv like most people).
I was a projectionist in a Northern Alberta town in the 1980s and I remember running this movie. It truly is an underrated movie. I was surprised even back then at its poor performance.
The fact that the movie wasn't a summer blockbuster means that whoever marketed the movie was bad at their job. Marketed right it could have been that summer's biggest money maker. Dennis and Meg were great but the standout was Martin Short. Watching him in this role made me realize what a comedic genius he is. No other actor or comedian could have pulled that role off.
I was born in 1980 and had the privilege of growing up with Joe Dante's films. Along with The 'Burbs and the very wonderful and underrated Matinee, Innerspace was my favorite Joe Dante movie during my childhood. It genuinely is unfortunate that we're not really getting movies like this anymore. Nobody wants to take risks any longer.
This is perfect rebuttal when people say movies haven't really changed, it is our tastes that changed. No. Movies did change. I miss these movies. Modern movies can keep their CGI and drama, I want movies to be fun again.
I saw this in the theaters that summer of ‘87 and always loved the movie. It fell under the radar among my friends as it was a movie that just never got talked about. The difference between Innerspace and Summer Blockbusters today is the characters and story. Innerspace has a really cool story and likeable characters that you root. Today’s summer blockbuster is more about wowing you.
I did see it in a cinema back then. One of my favourites. It is an unsung hero. It holds up great, to this day . Amazing cast and film-making at its best.
This is a fantastic update to Fantastic Voyage's premise. It's a funny, and thrilling movie with great FX that still holds up today. Joe Dante was at his peak during these years and should have been given big budget movies to direct.
I dig "Twistin' the night away"...both the Sam Cooke version (His "cupid" is Tuck and Lydia's song) and Rod Stewart's as Jack Putter goes chasing after them/the Cowboy at the end for the credits - This movie holds a place in my heart for so much more than just some of the good music
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid and still do. My wife had never heard of it so I showed it to her last year and she loved it too. I also loved tons of Dante movies as a kid & still every bit as much as an adult and didn't even realize that the same guy directed all these movies I love until a few years ago.
I watched this movie and listened to the soundtrack all the time in college. Everything you said was true. Thanks! Robert Picardo did such an awesome job doing Martin Short, I was confused at how they worked it out.
I saw this over 4 days when it came out on VHS. I worked in a video rental store here in Ireland in the evenings . We didn't have a video player at home but I was allowed watch the one in the back room of the store during lunch break. So I got a sausage box each lunch and watched it in half hour segments ... good memories 🙂
So many great moments in this movie but Martin Short really shines. My two favorite moments are when he is in the middle of a panic attack and says, "I'm possessed!" And that scene where he gets drunk and dances around is such great physical comedy.
It feels weird seeing these amazing movies from my childhood become classics that are up to us to keep alive. It just feels natural that they are normal cannon for every human on earth.
I met Vernon Wells a few years ago at a con and told him something he probably never hears, that this was my favorite movie he was in. He laughed and told me an awesome story about it. Excellent review and in depth analysis of this overlooked classic. Makes me want to watch it all over again. You’re right they don’t make them like this any more. High Concept really needs to make more of a comeback these days.
West McGee this kind of thing happens all the time, a well spoken, intelligent and funny RUclipsr that misspeaks a presumed less than commonly spoken word or phrase but nevertheless triggers ‘grammar nazis’, including me. I try not to take points off, especially since he’s reviewing this movie. I even saw it in theaters, one of the few kids who did apparently.
I've watched this movie at least a couple dozen times. It's fun as hell, is well paced, has great practical and visual effects, and is nicely self-contained. I'll have to spool it up again :)
This movie is an absolute treasure. I've seen it so many times and it is always amazing. It's a bit bizarre but never goes over the edge. I guess you could say that about most of Joe Dante's work. Gremlins 2 is a similar experience which also has another perfect performance from Robert Picardo. It's not just the voice either. His whole physicality changes when he's Putter playing Cowboy. It's brilliant. It was nice to see him achieve fame to a degree with Voyager but he never showed off his acting to the same degree.
Joe Dante is horrendously under appreciated. He actually did a movie a few years back called "The Hole" which was quite good, but due to some weird issues with distribution was only theatrically released in the UK. It feels a lot like a movie version of a story you would see in Dante's TV series "Eerie Indiana".
This is a classic..I loved it when back in the 80’s and 90’s, I would be flipping through the cable movie channels (HBO, Cinemax)..and weather it was just starting or caught it in the middle it was a must watch
Thank you thank you thank you! One of my favorites! But I love all Joe Dante films really, and your video here is exactly why. Hes a genius. They don't make movies like this anymore and that's why the 80s are so special....
Agreed! I LOVED this movie when I saw it in theaters years ago. My friend and I howled with laughter throughout the movie (Martin Short was perfectly cast) and I was really surprised it flopped (which unfortunately meant that no sequels were in the works). The way they've been rebooting movies lately, I've often thought this one would be an excellent candidate. It could even be a sequel with Martin Short helping out somehow.
I was 13 or 14 when I first saw Innerspace on VHS new release at the local video store. And I am so glad you mentioned the letterbox format, because that was what really sparked the birth of a cinephile in me. I never went to the movies as a kid, so I only saw them on tape or tv. Finding out that I was getting half the movie cut away from me was just astounding; how were they _allowed_ to do that, if they could just show us the whole picture? From then on, I was a letterbox purist LOL
I LOVED inner space. It was one of the most HILARIOUS movies I have ever seen. I still LMAO whenever i am able to watch it again. And it's been - lets see - 87. 97, 2007, 2017 - 32 years already? God I must be getting old!!
I watched this movie as a kid, seen it many times since then, rental, HBO, regular channel's movie of the week. I believe you do this movie a disservice saying "....you have never seen." We have seen and love it today. It's one of my deep desires to never see this movie remade or rebooted. Jack Pendleton, to the rescue!
We had a satellite dish growing up. I mean the big metal dish in the yard kind. And my dad had an illegal “chip” so we got HBO free. He would always record the new movie when it came on Somewhere in a box full of old VHS tapes this movie is recorded. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
The Law of Attraction is real! I literally was thinking about this movie today but couldn't think of the name. I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid and remember loving it. Thanks for the video. Watching this movie again is now on my to-do-list.
For me it was the scene where Jack was freaking out and the ship nearly went into his heart. I was like 4 and for 10 years after that the sound of a heartbeat would send me into a panic.
1.66 is the standard wide aspect for European widescreen, while 1.85 is for the US (and why 1.78 was decided on for HDTV, as it would be a compromise and not show black bars on either with over-scan). I actually saw the movie quite a few times as a kid: my dad had recorded it on his Betamax VCR from a movie channel (so I guess we didn't contribute any to the video market catch-up for its revenue).
The character that stands out the most to this day is Mr. Igoe with his prosthetic attachments. They slipped in some subtle adult humour in one scene where he attaches a "vibrating rod" to his arm.
I watched this movie at the AMC theater in Milpitas, Ca., while my mother and sister watched another movie that they didn’t like so much and ended up watching the movie with me!
Saw it in the theater in 8th grade by myself while my mom went shopping. Win/win there! Absolutely loved it then and love it now. But seriously, what's not to like? The whole production was top-shelf. Great (if slightly recycled) concept, excellent script, hularious fun for all ages comedy, oscar winning vusual effects, perfect music by one of the greats, terrific cast including Martin Short at his very best, it's just cinema gold. Joe Dante is one of the best to ever do it and a he's a personal favorite of mine. He's so zany and cartooney and creepy all at the same time. His segment in the Twilight Zone Movie was by far the best of 4 awesome vignettes which says a lot. He's not underrated as people who know his work give him high praise but he's definitely criminally underappreciated as he's the least known by name of his more famous contemporaries. His creative aesthetic was unique and wondrous. Thanks for all the great times Mr. Dante!
I never realised that was Robert Picardo!! I completely bought his character so much I assumed they found a guy exactly like the character to play him.
Yes! I almost got this on Blu-ray for $17.00 at Fry’s little too much for just a Blu-ray but now I really want to watch it ! Been looking for it every where now! GREAT MOVIE!
As long as we are talking about Dennis Quaid and high concept... 'The Long Riders.' Directed by Walter Hill and Staring the Quaid Brothers, the Carradine Brothers, the Keach Brothers and the Brothers Guest... as the infamous James Gang, it is an odd and beautiful 'Western' that never got a good look by anyone. I think it won an Oscar for something. It is amazing.
Not sure how well this did in the cinema in the UK but it was on TV a lot when I was a kid and I loved it. I recommend it to everyone and the effects are brilliant even today. Nice sharp editing and great soundtrack and cast make it a brilliant film to watch. I can't imagine the film working well if it was remade with a new cast or new cgi effects and music. It all just works so well as it is and I would like to see it pushed up the scale of it being a "classic" you know having a nice 4k remastered blu ray and perhaps a model of the pod or something like that. Heck can you imagine a VR game of this.
That movie is, a treasured childhood memory. Fun and Sci-fi what more could you want
treasured and TRAUMATIZING

Absolutely love this movie. I also think a lot of the special effects really play well in today's CGI era
I saw this as a kid and loved it then. Been a while, but I have fond memories.
Dante!
Brings back many childhood memories. Hello from Papua New Guinea!
I never realised that was Robert Picardo!! I completely bought his character so much I assumed they found a guy exactly like the character to play him.
I have watched that movie many times I have it on VHS I got it back after it first came out, GREAT FLICK!!!
Yes! I almost got this on Blu-ray for $17.00 at Fry’s little too much for just a Blu-ray but now I really want to watch it ! Been looking for it every where now! GREAT MOVIE!
No movie today can compare to the authenticity of this film. 🎥
Fantastic movie and the special effects still look great today.
Just came from "Rick and Morty -- Anatomy Park (S1:Ep3)" ... I forgot how much LOVE was put into 80s effects movies
To be fair, both Dragnet and Spaceballs are amazing. What a wonderful time to be alive it was!
This is my favorite movie, I used to try and make the ships out of legos when I was little
One of my favorite films. Joe Dante is a true master of his art, that hacks like J.J Abrams are tying to imitate in vain.
Loved innerspace, was goid to watch on sick days from school
As long as we are talking about Dennis Quaid and high concept... 'The Long Riders.' Directed by Walter Hill and Staring the Quaid Brothers, the Carradine Brothers, the Keach Brothers and the Brothers Guest... as the infamous James Gang, it is an odd and beautiful 'Western' that never got a good look by anyone. I think it won an Oscar for something.
It is amazing.
“Congratulations, Jack...you just...DIGESTED the villain!”
"Congratulations, Jack. You just digested the bad guy."
Saw it on video in 88, because I was living in Japan, then. Loved it.
