Yup! What’s interesting is I only used those terms in high school. In college I’d just say what year I was in since not everyone finishes their degree by four years. Might just be me though!
✂️ Everyone reading Babel made me finally read the poppy war and it’s like the best thing I’ve read all year. Very excited to continue the series and then read Babel
every time i see you read and cry i say OUTLOUD to my computer "oh, bug. sweet girl" like i can comfort you through a screen lmao. love your review cant wait to finish the year off with babel.
your videos are such comfort videos for me, I love how you speak about books. I'm only halfway through (you just finished book 2 of babel at this point) but I'm cheering for another 5 star!!!
Yayyy I’m so happy you loved In My Dreams I Hold A Knife!! I read it so so fast cuz I had to know what would happen and the twist at the end was so dark!
This feels like the right assessment for all of these books. I’m waiting for the perfect tabs to get here so I can start Babel because I know I’ll want to annotate it.
I enjoyed in the hall with a knife but I think it works best if you read all three. Its gonna build on characters and the mystery. Things that you think that happened in the first book may not be what it appeared. I did also enjoy all the nods to clue. I would say this does learn more towards cozy mystery.
I think the reason the dual timeline in In My Dreams works is because the past timeline is just an extension of what’s being revealed in the current day timeline and Ashley Winstead was only providing information from the past as you needed to find it out.
Loved this video sooo much! The way you talked about Babel and all the topics it was covering was so eloquent. It sounds like an amazing book, I’m for sure going to be adding it to my TBR!
All books on my TBR, 2 I have already waiting for me on my shelves! So excited to see your thoughts on these! ✂ Just as a guide - for college: freshmen is 1st year, sophomore is 2nd, junior is 3rd, and senior is 4th/final year (if it takes long than 4 years, its called 5th year senior). The same terms (minus 5th year senior) is also used for high school - the school before university.
hahah yes i remembered when editing the other two were sophomore and junior but i wouldnt have been able to tell you what order they were in😂😂 thank u for letting me know!
✂ Not me crying with you because I read Babel in September and I still remember the PAIN. But it really is the most perfect book and we don't deserve RF Kuang
I just found your channel recently but you quickly became one off my favourite booktubers and comfort youtubers, especially with the meme clips in-between ♡♡♡
You describing how you were dragging out your reading of Babel because you wanted to soak in the reading experience.....yeah that's me with House of Leaves which I have been taking ages reading but because I don't want it to end lol ✂️
Your enthusiasm for Babel is making me love it more LOL I liked it but was a little disappointed because it felt too "tell" rather than "show" and therefore a little condescending and YA at times. I felt myself wanting more from supporting characters and the magic, but I think it was really "magic light" so it would focus on the much deeper meanings of colonialism, institutional power, racism, sexism etc. As someone studying other languages too, I adored how it explained the complexities of languages and translations.
i actually did enjoy both if we were villains and the secret history! BUT i read if we were villains first which i think helped. if you read the secret history first, i think your expectations are going to be wayyy too high for future dark academia (it’s a problem tbh). both are very different yet have a lot of the similar vibes. i also love both literature and theatre, which helped as well i think!!
Girl those SOBS! You scared me! But you absolutely convinced me to add Babel to the list so it's worth it. I'm curious, did you get the content of the footnotes in the audiobook?
I loved reading In My Dreams I Hold a Knife (5⭐) earlier in 2022 and am about halfway into The Last Housewife - enjoying it even more than IMDIHAK so far. Ashley Winstead's writing is definitely up there in my top discoveries of the year 🙌
You’re right - babble is wrong and it annoys me so much 😂 the story of the Tower of Babel (pronounced bay-bel) is about language/translation so I assume it’s named after that but said differently for reasons I don’t get 😂
✂️ omg I don't want to read Babel because I'm a translator and I'm SCARED of how they portray it 😅 but I swear I got emotional when you were talking about it being a love letter to language and how language is explored
it hurt when you said translation is a violence itself when no!!! it's not!! in the sense that the intention and goal is not to erase the original language/culture but to spread and explain it. violence would be to impose English to Chinese people, not to translate one language into another, as that is the only way to provide communication and exchange of cultures :(
The vlog I’ve been waiting for!! I finished In My Dreams I Hold A Knife over the weekend because I wanted to hear your thoughts on it once I finished too ☺️ love your videos soo much
I wouldn't call In My Dreams a dark academia novel, just a mystery thriller. It seems like people just prefer that label because it's trendy, but it was definitely not marketed that way. Also, I never, in my 35 years, heard the pronunciation "bay-bel" before this book was published 😅
✂️ I have In My Dreams I hold a Knife on my shelf, haven’t had the urge to pick it up really but maybe I will now 🧐 Also be honest, will a non fantasy girlie like Babel because any kind of fantasy and I’m like ugh nope, but you’ve made it sound so good?? 😭
In my dreams I hold a knife is NOT dark academia. There’s no element of educational elitism that to me is an aspect of this genre. Now ‘if we were villains’ is great book if you want more dark academia
Wait.. I thought bay-ble WAS the British pronunciation 🤣🤣🤣 this whole debate has been so odd bc I only heard it Babel like "babble" (and so, apparently, has the author) for 34 years and all of a sudden there is this debate over how you're supposed to say. Lol.
There are some tough, important topics discussed, and it is definitely an adult book, but I don't think there's anything that wouldn't be suitable for that age. Then again, it completely depends on what you're ok with reading, so maybe look up content warnings?
"My experience can't be further from the truth, I just sat in my room reading", girl SAME!
my understanding is:
freshman = 1st year
sophomore = 2nd year
junior = 3rd year
senior = 4th year
Americans did I get it right?
Yup! What’s interesting is I only used those terms in high school. In college I’d just say what year I was in since not everyone finishes their degree by four years. Might just be me though!
Yes you got it right
I wasn’t really that interested in Babel, but now I’m 100% adding it to my tbr ✂️
YESSSSSS!!!!
We need the recipe for your brownies. They looked so good.
✂️

Yay first like and comment. Love this channel. Best to you and your family
✂️ 2022 is the year that rf kuang emotionally devastated Meg 😂 I’m excited but scared to pick up Babel because I know I’ll have the same reaction
Hahaha she’s really put me through it this year
her books are the epitome of 🌠emotional damage🌠
Your eyes!! I’ve never noticed how bright they are before, they’re almost yellow, wow 🤩
Okay but that seal bookmark is ADORABLE
R.F. Kuang is the queen of 🌠emotional damage🌠Especially with Babel
omg when you started crying at the ending of Babel i started crying too bc i was reliving the pain😭😭😭
your videos are such comfort videos for me, I love how you speak about books.
After watching this and having put myself on a book buying ban recently I immediately caved and bought Babel because I love every book you love!!
Omg whenever you cry in your videos it makes me cry, I can’t 😭✂️
That shopping cart angle. 👌🏻 True cinema.
This feels like the right assessment for all of these books. I’m waiting for the perfect tabs to get here so I can start Babel because I know I’ll want to annotate it.
Oh yes I can imagine how much fun it would be to annotate

I was already excited for Babel and I was going to ask for it for Christmas but you’re making me feel like I need to read it now! ✂️
Watching you read Babel was a true ✨experience✨. That’s shoe biz baby

✂️
I loved In My Dreams but had to reread the first 20% because I was CONFUSED! But once you get past that point WHEW what a book!!
Your reaction to Babel makes me feel so seen. Best of the year. Right with you. ✂️🏆
I can’t wait to read Babel after your reaction ❤
Dark Academia's probably my favourite sub-genre, I should definitely make my own reading vlog at some point because there's soooo many on my TBR
Your enthusiasm for Babel is making me love it more LOL I liked it but was a little disappointed because it felt too "tell" rather than "show" and therefore a little condescending and YA at times. Yes!! And the audiobook uses a different narrator for the footnotes than the rest of the book so it’s super easy to tell when it switches between them
The vlog we’ve all been waiting for 🙌
yesssss!!
it's babel like babelfish (bay-bel) rather than babble!
I'm definitely interested in picking up In My Dreams I Hold A Knife! Babel looks very intimidating but your reaction has me intrigued by it ✂
I just finished Babel and I can here to cry with someone
As a Canadian I also never know what year of university or high school someone is in during a book.

I have had so many book recommendations that I keep getting books but not reading.
I own In My Dreams I Hold A Knife and Babel but I haven’t read them yet.

Thanks!
Just ordered Babel 😗✌🏼 how could I not read it after this
I'm also trying not to buy books right now... and the last housewife & the woman in the library are at the top of my tbr
I’ve never made brownies from scratch! Can we get the recipe!?? 💕
I have bought babel not sure how I will find it I have just turn 60
Do you feel like people should read THE SECRET HISTORY prior to BABEL?
This. 🙌
💕💕💕

Baybel is British, babble is American!

It is sad, I would say it’s not really brutal or horrifying, say as the poppy war
