Hi, I was wondering I have a house I'm working on it has a Vertical Staircase type crack the outside frame of the house is cement - cinderblock with a stucco or plaster coating on the outside and the inside, the crack is from the inside of the house to the outside you can see outside. I filled the gap with some expansion foam for now, and came across your video any recommendations? Can I do this with it. The Gap Grows some but it's an old house
Hey Kirk, we have a crack in the wall similar to that one and we were thinking of using sika Mortar Fix to try and seal the crack. It has similar properties to that of sikaflex and is a polyurethane caulk. Would you say it is a good idea?
Howdy Agus dude, yes Sika is the strongest calling sold, however, it's not known for matching textures. Howdy, Kirk! What does it mean exactly when a wall "opens up" in the sun? (See 2:31) What is the significance of this with respect to such (or other) repairs? Many thanks!
@@nikolaiv1138 Excellent question, in the morning the cracks are the largest. When it’s really hot the sun makes the wood expand thus the cracks are less noticeable on stucco walls.
Howdy Wm S Dude, excellent question, that's the toughest texture to macth unless the original person left a bucket of the aggregates in the basement or cellar, which is unlikely. I have stuccoed a home over 25 years ago where we applied the brown coat with hanson white cement plaster and before it dried you throw on your chosen aggregates, seashells, glass colored pebbles, or whatever strikes your fancy. it is really difficult to find all the different aggregates especially if the home is over 50 years old, I have tried twice and spun my wheels as you need the exact same pieces. Best wishes as you have your job cut out for you. I have seen Andy Davis of Davis stucco match patches twice on these thrown on pebble dash finishes., where he found all the items I'll never know. sorry, best wishes, Kirk giordano Plastering
Can you repaint a stucco house after doing the large crack repair? I have an old house that needs some small to medium crack repairs then repainted. Thank you!
Hey Kirk, when finishing a patch like this, how do you match the color? I have an old house with an attached porch, all stuccoed in a heavy lace style, with a buff/beige color similar to house in this video. My stucco is not painted though. There are a few old structural cracks in the front porch walls that someone repaired before with some kind of grey caulking, like you did in step 1 in the video. But they didn't float & feather a top coat. I want to touch these up & blend them into the rest of the stucco, but also match the color.
Hello kelly olsen-stanko, sorry, you will have to paint the area after caulking. Caulking do come in many colors but chances of finding the right color will be tough. Best wishes, Kirk Giordano Plastering
Great information. My neighbour has a crack on his chimney exterior where the chimney tapers sideways (about the height of the inside mantel). The jumbo brick has moved enough to cause the stucco to crack open at the corner. It looks like the brick has moved about 1/4". If I really tried, I could move that brick but I'd like to fill the hole and seal it off again without disturbing the stucco anymore. I may be able to tap it back tighter too? What would be the best product to lock the bricks together as much as possible?
Sikaflex 1 A it’s a construction sealant and adhesive. Just don’t get it in you as it’s a drag to get off. Also it’s not very user friendly like Mor-Flexx, but incredibly strong.
I have two buildings right next to each other, both made of block. Both have the blocks scored, galvanized wire mesh nail to the blocks and Expansion Joints. Both were 3 coat applications, one with old fashioned stucco mixes, one with Dryvit. No problems with the Dryvit building after 12 yrs. Stucco building hair line and deeper cracks all over the walls. Kirk what is the brand name and product number of the polyurethane Cualks you used in this video? I know it will recrack, but if you don't keep the water out the freeze/thaw cycles will pull the application away from the wall.
Howdy Meno, I think it was rain buster, I also use a lot of sikaflex, but for most cracks I prefer Mor-Flexx as it has sand in it and matches most finishes if applied properly. Best wishes, Giordano’s teaching video’s
Howdy Christian, try typing in the name, Mor-Flexx, it is sold online. However, this crack would require two tries as it's too large for the Mor-Flexx to fill without shrinking. Hi Kirk, I just bought a house 8 months ago and the house was built in 1941 & they had an family room added on in 1972, now I noticed that there is a cracks from the top of the exterior wall all the way to the the floor vertically and it appears around the border of the old & the additional portion, after my handyman opened up the crack, it is about 1/8-1/4 inches wide vertically, and I saw him fixed it like the way you did, do you think it is a serious problem for this case?
Howdy Albert, with all additions, added the foundations flex differently, as they are poured at different times. and caulking will need to be done when necessary, I don't think it is a big deal personally. Just kinda annoying but that's life.👨🏻🔬

I'm a little confused about how to color match stucco repairs. If I have stucco that has the color in it, and I have a few scrapes and cracks, how to I color match. Is there a way to color match the pigment into the calking or stucco, or do I have to paint that repaired area? And if I have to paint, do I just take a sample of the stucco in and have a paint shop color match it?
Howdy Views dude, some plastering material yards sell 2-pound boxes of color pigment with the correct sand howver most don't match when applied. In my, over 35 years I have found only crytal white will match. And even this takes a bit of skill. Hia Kirk. Great tips thanks. Its generous of you to share the expertise. All of us with render have or will have cracks! I like the recommendation of the sikkaflex ebt+ but when I read their spec it says that it cannot be overpainted. I can't get the mor-flexx in the UK so that's a pain. Do you use a specific sealant when overpainting is needed, say with sandtex masonry paint? My cracks are max 1/4" wide. Thanks lots
Howdy Neil, if a crack is too large, buy the caulking of your choice fill, wait for a few days if it shrinks, just add more, of course, seal the caulking tube so that the opened calking does not get solid. Live long and plaster Answers to life’s stucco and plastering questions
What do you think about using fiberglass tape over the polyurethane and then put the elastomeric textured stucco patch (which drys flexible) into the top over the fiberglass tape.? Any downside to using fiberglass. Have done that in past but don't know if there is a downside to doing that.
Hieff Nesselroad, that sound logical, however the video below make the work last much longer. I do add fiberglass mesh tape too, two week ago I used the mesh because if i would not have the patch would have had a large perimeter crack. Kirk and Jason, thank you for the examples(especially in action videos) so many people lack a true discriptivecommand of syntax(not meaning you personally Kirk) but the live example as you speak, now that's what happening. Recently came onto one has sand finish on like12-15 inch wide sheetrock with the holes in it. On the inside. And overhead. What kind of mixture is best on wire lath overhead, inside?
Howdy and happy Easter Fastrice, absolutely, what happens if you fill a large crack and the next day or say two dads later shrinks and is sucked in? Nothing, you just add a bit more if this happens. Most caulking will shrink if the crack is deeper or wider than 3/8. Many cracks are wider than this so when this happens, don't panic just add more. I have a question about what you're saying starting at 3:30. The word "planning" confuses me. Are you saying that you **could** have filled the crack with caulk and then covered it with stucco, but you didn't because that stucco would crack again soon over this dynamic crack? Whereas in another video (ruclips.net/video/xTB2RxBdKGA/видео.html), you did cover the caulk with stucco because it was a static crack. My stucco has a moderate dash surface.. So far I've done well matching texture over static crack repairs but am faced with structural cracks now and I guess I need to work the caulk-on-caulk approach you took to simulate a dash look. Many thanks for your public service efforts. So far I have about 12 of your videos bookmarked as they've helped me repair many specific problems on my historic old house. The oddest problem I've repaired? Someone re-stucco'd OVER parts of a downspout and its straps. I imagine you've seen worse.
Hi Joe O'Connor, without viewing my own video, I will say there are many ways to fix a structural crack. I am implying to just fill it with stucco is the easiest, but far from the best as when a structural crack moves again and it will, as it's structural in the first place, the stucco will simply crack with it. (for me structural means when it rains plus a bunch more reason, the area or wall will lift then when dryer conditions occur, settle, thus structural) If a polyurethane caulking if used first and the texture can't be matched with that caulking a person cam apply a stucco with sand to match a texture using stucco on top of all this caulking, Is a bonding agent necessary? Depends, If the caulking is allowed to set and or dry, yes a bonding agent would now be necessary to adhere the new stucco to this area, if added while the caulking is still curing is a bit tricky as can it affect the integrity of the caulking? Good question, yes. But for a temporary fix, say 15 years, it is an intelligent alternative for keeping the rain water out to the alternative of tearing the wall apart and trying to locate why the walls is moving and or separating. Cheers, kirk giordano plastering
+Kirk & Jason Giordano's plastering & stucco tips . Excellent, thanks! Very clear now and you address some questions (e.g., does covering new polyurethane affect curing?) that occurred to me later. Time is money. I'm ready to tackle the last phase of this project. I really appreciate how much time you give to us viewers.
Just keep one thing in mind, stucco by itself meaning stucco the final finish is a cosmetic finish and has very little strength as it's only applies 1/16 to 1/8 inch thick. The real strength comes from the Lath (Stucco Netting, Rib lath, Diamond mesh, etc.) and the Scratch and Brown coat cement which makes up most of the thickness of the wall system. An example of using just stucco by itself would be to apply stucco directly to brick or cinder block without applying a floated brown coat finish. This usually results in uneven suction, cracking and stucco not bonding well to the surface. That kind of shit work is done by guys that either don't know any better or just take peoples money and shortcut the job .
Evening Puda, I used Sikaflex first as the membrane was torn and very deep. Sikaflex caulking is quite stronger than Mor-flex, but I did want a sandy finish hence the Mor-flexx on top. Note Quikrete also makes caulking with sand in it that is just as good as Mor-flexx.🥂
Hi Kirk, I have a 1/2 inch x79 inch gap where my stucco patio wall meets the back of my house (stucco as well). Would the best way to close this gap be the method you used in this video (sikaflex with mor-flexx)? The gap is about 10 inches deep so I'm guessing I could use some spray foam to fill the deeper portion, then use sikaflex and then mor-flexx? How would you do this repair? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I have a similar condition here in a clinker facade (outside) and I have concerns about using Sikaflex to fix cracks, because I fear that it might introduce thermal bridges (still better than leaving the crack open i know). Do you have any thoughts on that? Help is much appreciated, thank you from germany for the video :)
Hello Kirk, I live in Florida. I removed my roll out awning and brackets which left 1/2 inch holes where the bolts were. Can I fill the holes with the sika Flex concrete fix and then use sika ready mix stucco patch over it without a bonding agent? Will the stucco hold to the Sika flex? Thanks!
G'day Grace, you can, if it were me I'd use Mor-flexx caulking, allow it to mushroom behind and smear on the surface so it has some wall to stick to when it dries in a few days add more to flush it out even. it's a lot less work plus make the holes watertight. Hi Kirk, I’ve been watching your videos lately like it’s my full-time job. I still don’t think things fully stick so I keep re-watching to get pieces I’ve missed. I have a wall on my small ranch home where the painted stucco top-coat has separated. I was quoted 3,500 to fix it and there really aren’t a lot of stucco experts around my area to choose from. I did some exploration and pulled away all the loose stucco. I power washed, applied weld-Crete, and then got some rapid set stucco mix and tried to put on a layer of stucco, being careful to feather in the edges. (We don’t have any rapid set stucco patch here). I didn’t realize I wasn’t doing it right. I probably only needed to do a skim coat and then attempt a Spanish lace texture. The texture on my house is very uniform and I think it might be 20/30 sand. I bought some quickrete finish coat to do the skim coat once I’m ready. Anyways, I wasn’t happy with what I did, and tried to remove it enough that I could do a skim coat over it and try to make it look somewhat decent. I bought a rotary hammer and tried to take it off as much of the stucco I’d previously put on like I’ve seen done when you remove stucco in videos, but because I used weld-Crete, that stuff was on amazingly well. I ended up putting about 3 or 4 holes in my wall and I could see the stucco wire. I power washed the wall again and brushed out any loose debri I could from the holes. Despite brushing well, I still don’t think the holes were as dust free as the surface stucco was. I added some polyurethane Sikaflex to the holes but I’m worried that because it wasn’t as dust-free as I would like, it won’t provide that water resistant seal. Should I have done something differently to prepare the holes to get them completely dust free? Will that matter if I can’t get it as dust free for the caulk as I would like? Thank you
Wow, Farrah, you had a lot of work to do, "Rapid set stucco" has large sand '16/20," that matches most stucco finishes, I would have recommended the USA green core from HD as the sand is much smaller. "20/30' and therefore much easier to apply. Sorry, you had to go through this, but this means you are an exceptional woman to continue trying. What is your phone number I will call, I don't give my personal number out for obvious reasons however your seams an exception. cheers.
Howdy Olufemi, the determination of length of time depends on the individual movement to each home or building. When it rains as a rule the ground expands, thus a home will lift, when drier condition return the home will settle, thus cracking can and will occur. Plus the sun heat will expand the wood, thus causing the stucco to bulge, thus when cool, the movement or vibrations cause the same effect. There are about 15 more reasons but that would take me too long to write out, plus I have many videos where I explain most common reasons why stucco cracks. Best wishes with your projects, live long and Plaster Kirk giordano on teaching plastering

Just noticed the area code you are local to where I grew up. I’ll be trying this today my repair isn’t as large. We had a new panel installed and a new mast and the only items removed tore the elastomeric coating and some of the stucco so will be trying this to be sure it is water tight.
NOOOO- put backer rod (foam rope) in the joint and apply sealant. Tool exterior to achieve the correct sealant profile. That joint is going to continue to move (the caulk wont because its injected as one big thick turd) and allow moisture to re-enter the wall system
Howdy Aurora, a backer rod in this hole is like tits on a boar, useless. Peace, love, and happiness to all. Sound Plastering tips from your favorite stucco nurds
@@StuccoPlastering Im not trolling, I work with the sealant industry. Sealants only work when they are properly profiled and have 2 points of contact. They should look roughly hour glass shaped. The backer rod is not "Useless" it created the concave profile on the back of the sealant. Its a critical and often overlooked portion of a proper sealant detail. Here is the proper procedure as shown by Sika ruclips.net/video/GtiOf6rg5eU/видео.html
@@tompolasky7302 any backer rod, in my opinion, stops the calking from going all the way back, each job is different, thus we improvise when we get there. Remember I'm showing my way, all folks can do as they choose.🍾

I'm a plasterer by trade with over years experience but now I teach martial arts part time and do construction part time. I agree with you in the fact that not everyone will want to pay the money to do a more extensive repair. Here's how I'd tackle that repair: (not saying your method doesn't work as my not familiar with your final sealant to say it would work or it wouldn't work) 1st I'd fill the crack with some Urethane sealant such as Quad or PL. I like Quad better as it has better flow. 2nd I'd fill the crack with the Urethane sealant but not quite fill it up all the way. So the sealant gives it some give for those strong internal movements. I'd let the Urethane dry up a day or more. 3rd I'd fill up the rest of the gap with a very sticky cement mix using Rapid Set and a good Acrylic Polymer Bonding agent as an admix to the cement. I would completely fill the crack and swipe a thin layer of cement over the top. 4th thing: Let it dry up a bit, spray some water over it with a spray bottle and float out with a Green Float. This way you get 2 things: The elasticity from the Urethane sealant and the strength of the Rapid Set cement with the bonding agent which I should ad that it's much stronger than just plain cement once you mix in your bonder. Very strong with cured! The more expensive way of course is to just tear back the crack, inspect for water damage, apply new 60 min paper if necessary, then expanded metal lath for stronger wire. I should also mention as you already know, a slipping structure would pretty much crack any stucco, masonry, or concrete. Notice that Roller coasters are either built with steel or wood because they have the most Flex. Only the structural supports would you see concrete. I enjoyed watching your video. Nice job!
Why not put a bit of mesh over that crack after you've caulked it Then use cement to go over it, then let it sit for a few minutes and then take a sponge and fur it all out and take some sand and throw it at it and then smush it with your hands. That's what I do😂
Excellent question. Fiberglass mesh won't stop a ten-tone hose from shifting. The caulking adheres and flexes where the addition of stucco would crack and fall off. 🕵🏼

Evening Joshua Valenzuela, expanded foam work very well, when it done expanding take a troel or putty knife and scrape of the excess. Sika-flex caulking is better and stronger, but I have use many cans of the foam stuff too.

Of course you can, on the inside place some interior caulking over the foam to make it prettier.

Hello Kirk & Jason, how would you repair Coquina Shell Stucco wall cracks ? have long small cracks in the walls.
Howdy Wm S Dude, excellent question,
that's the toughest texture to macth unless the original person left a bucket of the aggregates in the basement or cellar, which is unlikely.

@@reconscout5994 Hello, sure you can paint a home a hundred times, but best to paint every 7 to 10 years.

Just kinda annoying but that's life.👨🏻🔬
Like you're videos do you ever patch dryvit. Painting a number of homes that had dryvit installed. Many hairline ans larger cracks.
Howdy Scott, I have applied the Dry-Vit stucco system many times and have re-surfaced the finishes also.🤔
That's rare the Dry-Vit stucco systems would crack that much unless it was installed wrong. Its a styrofoam type of system.
I'd say all you can do is caulk or the mesh and recoat the stucco system.🤔

Good Morning Maraya, dude, cracks in stucco are normal as caused by ground movement, holes in the unlining paper are not normal, these will cause leaks, depending on if your paper is now disintegrated, yes, it would be a good idea to repair or caulk all cracks

I'm a little confused about how to color match stucco repairs. If I have stucco that has the color in it, and I have a few scrapes and cracks, how to I color match. Is there a way to color match the pigment into the calking or stucco, or do I have to paint that repaired area? And if I have to paint, do I just take a sample of the stucco in and have a paint shop color match it?
asusreviews you can put undercoat one large and put what colour u need
Howdy Views dude, some plastering material yards sell 2-pound boxes of color pigment with the correct sand howver most don't match when applied.
In my, over 35 years I have found only crytal white will match.
And even this takes a bit of skill.
I'd recommend painting the entire wall as if it rains you will notice the paint wont darken but the stucco pigmented color will.
I have a video that show this effect.

Hi Kirk, great videos and learning a lot.
One question, is it possible to use the Morflex only to fill the crack and not use Sika?
Thanks again!

Answers to life’s stucco and plastering questions
(for me structural means when it rains plus a bunch more reason, the area or wall will lift then when dryer conditions occur, settle, thus structural)
If a polyurethane caulking if used first and the texture can't be matched with that caulking a person cam apply a stucco with sand to match a texture using stucco on top of all this caulking,
Is a bonding agent necessary?
Depends,
If the caulking is allowed to set and or dry, yes a bonding agent would now be necessary to adhere the new stucco to this area,
if added while the caulking is still curing is a bit tricky as can it affect the integrity of the caulking?
Good question, yes.
But for a temporary fix, say 15 years, it is an intelligent alternative for keeping the rain water out to the alternative of tearing the wall apart and trying to locate why the walls is moving and or separating.
Cheers,
kirk giordano plastering

Kirk giordano plastering
Kirk, you won’t be surprised to know that I am indeed using Mor-flexx ;)
Atta Girl, bet it will come out excellent. 🥂
Serious question though, is there a big difference between Mor-Flexx and this other brand? Mor-Flexx is also used to repair cracks.
Evening Puda, I used Sikaflex first as the membrane was torn and very deep. Sikaflex caulking is quite stronger than Mor-flex, but I did want a sandy finish hence the Mor-flexx on top.
Note Quikrete also makes caulking with sand in it that is just as good as
Mor-flexx.🥂
@@StuccoPlastering thank you!!!
Evening Brian. The best video online about caulking stucco is below. How do I know?
I created it for this purpose. Structural or large cracking on stucco walls, no problem.

Nice patch done full gables like this lovely job if it looks shit I'll tell u after 47 years I'm hard 2 please credit where it's due 😊
Cool beans,
the one put inside the cracks line is sika flex?
Howdy Curry Bar, yes, Sika-Flex is one of the strongest polyurethanes known and its adhesive capabilities are shockingly strong.

Howdy Max, if concerned with using a polyurethane use Mor-Flexx as it is a latex with has sand in it and stretches like rubber.😏
Hello Kirk,
I live in Florida.

Hi Kirk,
I’ve been watching your videos lately like it’s my full-time job.
Thank you
Wow, Farrah, you had a lot of work to do, "Rapid set stucco" has large sand '16/20," that matches most stucco finishes,
I would have recommended the USA green core from HD as the sand is much smaller. "20/30' and therefore much easier to apply. Sorry, you had to go through this, but this means you are an exceptional woman to continue trying. What is your phone number I will call, I don't give my personal number out for obvious reasons however your seams an exception. cheers.
how long does this repair last? for some cases after a few months the cracks resurfaces, what can be done to repair the cracks permanently?
Howdy Olufemi, the determination of length of time depends on the individual movement to each home or building.
When it rains as a rule the ground expands, thus a home will lift, when drier condition return the home will settle, thus cracking can and will occur.
Plus the sun heat will expand the wood, thus causing the stucco to bulge, thus when cool, the movement or vibrations cause the same effect.
There are about 15 more reasons but that would take me too long to write out, plus I have many videos where I explain most common reasons why stucco cracks.
Best wishes with your projects, live long and Plaster

Just noticed the area code you are local to where I grew up. I’ll be trying this today my repair isn’t as large. We had a new panel installed and a new mast and the only items removed tore the elastomeric coating and some of the stucco so will be trying this to be sure it is water tight.
You can do it.
@@StuccoPlastering came out good. Now just giving it the week to cure listed on the tube and picking up some elastomeric paint.

I would have used injection ports and filled the crack fully. I'm not an expert but it seems like the obvious choice.
This wall is worth of stripping down, fix the movements and do the nice straight sponge finish with using actual straight edge, hard float and than sponge float. Or is every house in US rendered like this? No offense Kirk, but almost every video you post has a finish not worth of putting even on.
Howdy Peter, easy to throw out judgement, fact is there are so many homeless people in this neighborhood and even in the beautiful area that I live in, these homelss who would love to just have a roof over their head, heat and food well not that's just another luxury.
Moral to my reply, is not all have the cash to simply remove and replace.
Best wishes,
Professional answers on plastering projects with issues
Nice job!
When they're done with the expensive repair they will need your address to send the bill. u di#k!
@@StuccoPlastering Excellent answer for a not well intentioned comment.
Cementishious? 🤣🤣🤣
G'day Andreas, close, it spelled, "cementitious." 😏
Cementitious just means of the nature of cement.
Or "a high-strength cementitious mortar which sets within 1.5 hours."

There was one area about one inch that was too high to reach to repair -- I am worried about leaving the crack open.
I’d advise Mor-Flexx it’s an acrylic mixed with sand and water soluble, which means it cleans up easily.
