This is fantastic, Nicco. I admire that you're able to recognise great UX design and take inspiration from it. Everyone wins when the best ideas are shared. I cant wait to be able to drag windows between workspaces/desktops back and forth in overview! Excited to see more!
So basically gnome loses, since they closed themselves to the rest of the world and won't collaborate with anyone else. Which makes sense, as you can feel it when using gnome. That and kde6 are the reasons i switched to kde
Great job, Nicco. This is one of the two things that kept me from comfortably using kde. Its desktop management was just... not efficient, and I always went back to gnome as a result. The second annoying thing is kde's panel customisation, but apparently it's getting fixed too in the upcoming plasma 6 release. I'm really glad these issues are finally getting attention, thank you
Here's a cool idea to the problem at 3:40 - have the desktop "slide down" a bit enough to show the search results when you start typing, and make it "slide up" again if you clear the search field. Don't forget to make the search results "fade in" and out at the same time when the desktop slides down or back up. Keep the fluidity levels up! :D
this was one of your best edited videos, even if there were some mistakes where the B-roll doesn't match all of the animations were super visual and you explained everything super well
Wow, this is amazing, there's a few things of KDE that keep me on GNOME, and this was one of them! Keep it up! One thing that I would love to see is a way to keep a panel shown when in the overview, like how GNOME shows the app bar or whatever its called below the desktops
This would be huge. I use a mouse gestures, so I have one for the grid, another for overview, another for present windows on the current desktop... I do hope you'll not only focus on touchpad users, though, sometimes it seems that way - even when I use a laptop I have a mouse in my pocket.
Thank you, Both the animation and workflow looks amazing. Hope the merge request goes smoothly. One feature request, will it be possible to rearrange the virtual desktops. Gnome lacks this, so it will make overview even better.
One thing I miss from the overview is how Gnome Overview applies image filtering to the window images so they don't look pixelated even when the image gets small, this is specially noticeable when viewing a spreadsheet or a text editor using a standard dpi display
This is cool! I've been playing with KDE a little (I'm a long time gnome user), and the big thing I felt was lacking on the KDE side was the way the gnome overview is "unified", e.g. the overview search is effectively an application launcher. I like having the one key to get at the application launcher, but also being able to see all the open applications too.
I am a recent subscriber. I'm happy finally to have access to a developer, who is willing to shed light upon why certain choices were made, and who can give an honest appraisal of their product, including things that need improvement. This kind of humility is rather rare (unfortunately) and refreshing. Thank you.
Fantastic! The overview and 1:1 touchpad gestures is why I've been using Gnome on my laptop. It's just so efficient and feels natural. Now with this implemented in KDE, I might even switch!
really nice, looks amazing tho the main thing I think it misses from the gnome overview, is the dock, on gnome you can simply drag an app from the dock or app grid to a desktop to open a window there (without closing the view), which I guess would be quite harder to do in plasma as the overview and launchers are separate components
This is amazing. I'm just thinking that you didn't mention the ability to use the mouse scrollwheel to switch between which desktop is the one shown in the overview. Sometimes you have neither a touchpad nor a touch screen, you know :)
Incredible work! I think this is what will make me switch to KDE! On question though - is it possible to make any work on customizing what TouchPad gestures do? I find it strange, that KDE, an extremely customizable DE, does not have any way to customize gestures.
Awesome work!! I have one question though, could it be possible that the close button on the windows in the overview appears on the same side as on the titlebar?
This is one of two of my favorite things about GNOME, the other being the combined notification and calendar widget you get when you click the date in the center; that feels intuitive and looks great IMO. I also like the look of Libadwaita.
Now the only feature left in the desktop overview is the ability to increase the size of desktop bar. The default size is a bit smaller. Btw congratulations for your achievements.❤
I tried to switch to KDE recently, and the lackluster overview is a big reason I couldn’t stay. The overview is so integral to my workflow. Once your work is in, I’ll have to try again. :)
I really like this feature. The current solution is just horribly implemented and there is absolutely no way to turn off the touchpad gesture or remap it to something else. Will it have an option to disable hiding the taskbar? There is no need to hide the taskbar, and in GNOME it is possible to open pinned applications or applications in the appmenu by simply dragging them to the desired desktop
amazing work! that kind of gesture was always my favorite part of gnome! (really made me want to switch to gnome despite my craptop I currently have my linux install on being barely good enough to handle xfce)
This is awesome! Great job! I rarely use virtual desktops on my desktop-computer though, but I use activities. The activity bar/switcher could use a similar amount of love! ;)
Just today I saw a video about how gnome has combined overview ability with their beautiful app launcher (where one can once open launcher and drag all needed applications to different desktops to start work). Thank you for what you do for KDE!
I primarily use Gnome and the application launcher implementation is the worst part of the overview. It is buggy and slow on many systems and KDE actually has a similar launcher with superior behaviour, I just need it added to what we are seeing here.
@@orbatos Thanks for your reply! I have installed KDE so everything I know about gnome is only from youtube videos xD I never tried it at real life. So thank you again for the info. But! What KDE launcher do you mean?
