I saw this schedule fight happen repeatedly in the tech industry. The makers, software engineers, were always asking for less meetings so they could get work done. I always felt like I left meetings with more work to do.
I think I understand what you are trying to say. I am working with a lot of people who get a meeting in the morning and until after lunch, their productivity plummets. I am in a managerial position and I am actively trying to limit the amount of ceremonial meetings and help people rearange their schedule around big blocks of uniterupted focus time. Ideally days of uninterrupted focus time. That being said, I am not only relatively introverted, but I also have pretty strong ADHD. I cannot work on maker schedule. If I try to work more than half an hour at a thing at a time (unless I manage to get into hyperfocus flow), my brain is screaming internally at me, telling me to run away ang get next dose of dopamine. This does not necessarily oppose what you said, but it offers a completely unexplored caveat to your essay. PS: Great video. Deserves much more engagement then it is getting.
Thank you for your thoughtful response! I totally get what you're saying as well, I have ADHD tendencies myself but I tend to hyper-fixate on tasks rather than jump around. The continuous tiny steps forward feel like little hits of dopamine in and of themselves.
Chronic introvert here, and I i absolutely have to have a completely empty schedule if i have an appointment or a meeting or even if I'm meeting a friend for coffee later. I just CANNOT do anything else. It doesn't work. But *sometimes* I can make up for some of the work I missed that day after 9PM. Why 9PM? I have no idea.
DUDE same. My whole life I have been the *most* productive from 9pm-1am. My brain is firing on all cylinders - why? Not 100% sure. I'm assuming because everyone else is logged off and there is nothing/no one to distract me.
@@pipercreative ADHD seems to be strongly correlated with delayed production of melatonin, which in turn affects circadian rythm. That is why so many of us are night owls and are most productive late evening/night
Interesting!! I’m actually pretty extroverted but have the maker schedule built in me bc ADHD which makes sense bc it’s the same correlation with dopamine! So that’s another factor.
Super interesting! I think the ADHD factor needs to be taken heavily into consideration - the world is definitely built for "neurotypical" people but such a huge portion of the population just does not operate that way. Thanks for your response!
Yes! Been trying to explain this to managers for so long. Now I can just send them your video.
Us makers need to protect our time!

YES the best tech leaders historically safeguard their employees' schedules. Still a long way to go in that industry 😳
