Thank you Karen for reaching out to Greg Hartley for this interview. Thank you Greg Hartley! This was super cool! Karen you asked the questions I wanted to know. I'm a huge fan of The Behavior Panel and Body Language Tactics. I'm also a horse lover. My motto was make it fun for the horses.

I so agree. The things that I struggle teach are often overcome with a treat or postive motivator in minutes vs weeks. Sometimes, it's a clearer signal.
And It's not just the treat as people think. It's engagement. I think occasionally our equine friends need a little motivation just like we do. Obviously, we need many tools in our toolbelts but a little fun should be had by all. Trust vs dominance all the way!

Holy cow! Greg on horseback jousting in armor! Such a fascinating interview. I am not interacting with horses, but so much of what you shared is relevant to my relationships with cats. And-how to talk with myself about a difficult task. The process of: first create a space, then build rapport, focus on the task, then relax the energy again is brilliant!

What a wonderful lesson about living with horses! Thank you for what you do and having Greg on your show. What is cribbing and when a horse does something you don’t like, how do you break him of this habit.

    • @KarenRohlf
      @KarenRohlf  2 года назад +1

cribbing is a stereotypic behavior often caused by boredom, or stress... and it can remain as a habit even after the cause has been removed. The horse bites and pulls on a fence board or similar. It is soothing, so is an 'adapter' in body language terminology.
Re: Breaking habits... it depends on the behavior/habit. That is a pretty general question, but ...For me, if a horse does something I don't like I try to find the cause. Remove the cause, then I teach a different behavior.

Coming into this episode late...Surfing with the behaviour dudes this evening😁.
    Interesting interview.
    Thank you.
Wanted to share another level from an animal communicators point of view. I have found some of the horses I've worked with tend towards a heirarchy. This was surprising yet it also makes sense. I feel Karen, that you resonate a very grounded energy that seems somewhat natural for the horses to be able to handle. It makes sense that you would get the most out of your animals in that field. High respect for that. 💌
I find that many animals {horses included} seem to understand more subtle frequencies of sadness due to anger, over sadness due to grief, also anxiety due to fear and anxiety due to a disorder. There seems to be an understand of brain function and wavelengths within the mind that shows how we process information. So if those synapses are disrupted or unnatural in some way there is a sense of empathy there for that on some level. They are, along with other animals, routinely not given enough credit for the amount of information they process on the daily from us humans and other animals. No two are the same as we are as well.
In reading your information box talking of 💟 "heart centered" 💟 commitment That's really where these animals come from. Oh! ...They also have a great sense of humor depending on the individual 🤠😊
Thank you for an enjoyable hour 🐎
    ~S

I haven't ridden for many years but I found this very interesting. Love the Behaviour Panel! Wondering what Greg meant when he said he used to be a theatre guy, going on stage...any ideas?!
I saw a couple of scenes from The other boleyn girl being filmed here in England. Was so exciting, a hundred or so people on horse back together.

But Greg didn't even realize that horses relaxed breathing out where the nostrils
    vibrate, was just that
    a cleansing sigh.
But I do appreciate and happy that Greg admires horses.
Remember too, the military breaks you down so they can build you back up,
sort of like the mentality of a horse being "Broken"
That's not a good way to go, in my opinion.
But Greg is right- "A Bucket represents food" yep! lol
Greg is one of the more honest/sincere panelists of the group

Greg Hartley and horses! Say no more.
I'm cracking up here. I ride an Arab and that breed gets a bad rap for being crazy and spooky. I'm constantly explaining to people that they are completely sane. They just see what's coming hours before you do. Pay attention to their body language and you'll sit that spook like a champ.
I took a lesson out of Greg's book and taught my gelding to kiss me. He does it with such sweetness and kind eyes despite being the herd alpha. Aka shithead.. He was gelded late. My son has a fit . "Mom you are going to get your face bit off". No, he wants a treat and knows this behavior works really well to get it. Body language two- ways!
Mares are so smart. I have a pony that would bum rush when the barn door was opened. I'd cuss and get mad at the little brat. Well, my big mare caught on by reading me and started biting the pony and chasing her off when she would try to do it. She's a grulla QH with some old lines not a Hancock but a Poco Bueno. She learns just as much from watching me with my gelding as she does in training.
Great show. This was a real treat! TY both.
