You haven’t done too badly… lots of miss information still making its rounds… one thing I must point out though… the coolant pumps weren’t turned off, in fact all 8 instead of the usual 6 were turned on… I believe this was actually a major contributing factor? The coolant was circulating that fast that the whole amount of the coolant was at very close to boiling point, the water entering into the reactor was only a few degrees below boiling so even just a slight rise in temperature meant most of the water turned into steam and with the positive void coefficient meant a huge rise in reactor power and the steam explosion? There are still a lot of different ideas as to what really happened? I could go on for ages… but you did a good job…

You are absolutely right. The emergency cooling pumps were shut off prior to the test and this fact was also included in the INSAG-1 report to put more blame on the operators, but it didn't contribute to the outcome. It's just a testament to the lack of safety culture.
Shortly before the accident the flow of water was indeed risen, to the effect that the coolant was more effective, reactivity went down and automated control rods were pulled out to counter this effect. The operators had no chance to counter this, as the more control rods they pushed in the automated system would pull automated rods out in order to maintain criticality.

    Only some points:
    - neither Brukanov nor Fomins jobs were on the line, this particular test was in the books, yes, but actually it wasn't performed at any RBMK throughout the whole USSR. The NPP at Leningrad just refused to perform the test, without any consequences. Chances are that Brukanov didn't even knew of this particular test, there were much more important ones at the line (vibration tests of the turbines)
    - the prolonged operating at half the power was due to another shutdown at an NPP in southern Ukraine, not some unforeseen demand
    - between the initial reduction of power from 3200 to 1600 MW and the power reduction for the test there were 19 hours, not 10. Enough time btw that the reactor was actually depoisening. The "xenon pit", the spike in xenon present in the reactor occurs 4 to 6 hours after the reduction
    - the 700 MW for the test wasn't a regulation, Dyatlov stated that he himself put this number in the procedure, simply because there had to be a number written down.
The first 20 or so minutes of your video essay were brilliant, you did a great job of explaining the foundations. But then you go on with the explanation given in the flawed INSAG-1 report, where the Soviet state representatives, namly Legasov, twisted the narration to blame the operators. For unknown reasons the HBO mini series reflects the Soviet lies. There are much more accurate sources out there, for example INSAG-7, to begin with.

@@tobiaswilhelmi4819 totally agree…. Personally even insag7 I don’t fully trust? Personally I don’t think, even now, anyone really knows the full story?

tbh, the sarcophagus was less a result of shoddy soviet workmanship and more a consequence of the dire working conditions

We would have to go to Ukraine. And TMI was in 1979.. Enough of complaining, i like you video and your setup in the background. I am also kind of a "dark history" person and like the other channels about the topic. How about doing a Video about asbestos - basically an old and ongoing catastrophe. Good Luck and keep up the great work!

TMI was blown way out of proportion and nowhere near the level the media made it out to be.
