A history podcast for the popular audience, but it's the "unpopular" stuff, like death, disease, destruction - bloody, gross, mysterious, and weird.
A History of Torture and Murder | The Spanish Inquisition
From 1478 to 1834, Spain underwent its infamous Spanish Inquisition - a time when Spain hunted down heretics to purge the country of non-Catholics.
But the Spanish Inquisition wasn't even the first inquisition in Spain!
Let's look at the history of the Spanish Inquisition and how men like Torquemada, Grand Inquisitor, perpetrated torture and murder with consent from the Catholic Church. Perhaps you saw Torquemada in the Assassin's Creed movie - *that* scene was at an auto-da-fé, an event where heretics were rounded up and burned.
And don't worry - I go over all the different torture devices as well. From the strappado to the rack, the iron chair to the pear of anguish (which probably wasn't...

Is the Loch Ness Monster Real? (No. But The History Is!)
Просмотров 37914 дней назад
Scotland's most enduring mythical creature... the Loch Ness Monster. Fine, fine... we know she's not real. But that doesn't mean there isn't a history behind Nessie. Where did she come from? When did she appear in the historical record? How is she tied to Catholicism and the Picts, one of Scotland's earliest peoples? In today's APHOUT mini, let's go over the history of the Loch Ness monster. We...
How the Great Fire Saved London From the Plague
Просмотров 48521 день назад
London, 1665. Another epidemic of bubonic plague made its way over the English Channel from Amsterdam, and unlike other smaller outbreaks, this one had the potential to be costly. As Londoners and the broader English public battled yersinia pestis, a fire broke out in a bakery on Pudding Lane in the late summer 1666. And although the fire ravaged London, destroying an estimated 80% of the city,...
The Catacombs' FIRST Scientific Expedition?!
Просмотров 64528 дней назад
You know the ones - the famous Catacombs of Paris, tunnels lined with the skulls and femurs of the dead. But interestingly enough, the FIRST ever scientific expedition only began in 2023. Sure - pleeeeenty of people have been down there. But not in a deliberate, scientific expedition to determine the diseases and malformities of the dead. A majority of the bodies in the Paris Catacombs came fro...
Cannibalized - James Fitzjames of the Franklin Expedition
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.Месяц назад
Recently, DNA evidence linked a set of cannibalized remains to one of the higher ranking members of the lost Franklin Expedition - Commander of the HMS Erebus, James Fitzjames. He's not the first body to be identified; that was Erebus Engineer John Gregory back in 2021. But to have definitive evidence of James Fitzjames' death, and the horrors that befell him posthumously, is BIG NEWS for the h...
The Headless Horseman & The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Просмотров 22 тыс.Месяц назад
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a classic at Halloween, but was it the first ever Headless Horseman? Let's go over the mythology of the Headless Horseman. Most of us associate the headless horseman with Washington Irving's book, the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But the idea of a ghostly rider looking for his head, or perhaps a decapitated ghost haunting local villages, goes all the way back to medie...
The REAL history of the Salem Witch Trials
Просмотров 761Месяц назад
Salem, 1692. 19 people were hanged and one pressed to death after being accused of witchcraft. But why Salem, and why 1692? What led to this American tragedy? Let's go over the details of the event and look into the history that explains how witchcraft supposedly broke out in this small Puritan town in New England. We'll try to answer questions like - why did the girls suffer from afflictions? ...
EVEREST UPDATE: Sandy Irvine’s Boot FOUND
Просмотров 2,8 тыс.Месяц назад
Big news in the world of mountaineering, climbing, and Mount Everest - filmmakers Mark Fisher, Jimmy Chin, and Erick Roepke (and their team) have found Sandy Irvine's foot in a boot, his name labeled on the sock with red stitching. This is a HUGE deal - if they found what remains of the body... could they find the camera? And if they find the camera... will it show evidence that George Mallory ...
The Pendle Witches - England's Most Notorious Witch Trial
Просмотров 359Месяц назад
In 1612, 11 people around Pendle Hill in Lancashire were put on trial for witchcraft, and 10 were hanged. This was in James I's England, a monarch who hated all things witchy and demonic. But, like we saw with Salem, two of the main sources of evidence came from hearsay and children's testimonies. Worse still, a nine-year-old girl helped get most of her family convicted! What happened at Pendle...
Were Rats Really Responsible for the Black Death?
Просмотров 434Месяц назад
It was the pandemic that wiped out roughly 1/3 of Europe's population, with death toll estimates between a staggering 25-50 million people. It's probably the most famous pandemic in history, and certainly one of the most impactful. It was such a major event that we are STILL finding out new pieces of information, uncovering new plague pits, and determining new truths that were once lost to hist...
The Original Dracula, Vlad the Impaler
Просмотров 6402 месяца назад
Was the ORIGINAL Dracula really just Vlad Dracula, the Impaler? Although the fictional character is only loosely based on Vlad, the two are inextricably linked forever because of Bram Stoker's Dracula. So let's go over the real Vlad Dracula - who is he, what did his world look like, and how did he earn the moniker "the Impaler?" Then, we'll look at the connections between the real Vlad and his ...
This airship... EXPLODED | The Hindenburg Disaster
Просмотров 2482 месяца назад
On May 6, 1937, the Hindenburg Zeppelin exploded and caught fire as it was landing at the Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. 36 of the 97 people on board died; some in the initial explosion, some from jumping off the airship at height, and some from some horrific burns once they escaped the flaming vessel. It had huge ramifications for the airship industry and the popularity of blimps, ...
The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster

A massive earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan triggered a tsunami that killed tens of thousands and caused millions in damages - and it also triggered the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Powerplant. In this episode, we briefly revisit what happened with Chernobyl so we can compare it to Fukushima, as both disasters received the same nuclear "disaster" rating. But what really hap...

From the APHOUT archives! The video version of the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Let's learn how nuclear power plants work, and why the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded on April 26, 1986 - the worst nuclear incident in history. It was a combination of issues - substandard reactor design, an insistence of the Soviet government to cut costs where possible, and a poorly trained night shift run...
Cannibalism at Sea | The Medusa Shipwreck
Просмотров 2 тыс.3 месяца назад
The tragedy of the Medusa is a story about many things, but the most shocking is survival cannibalism at sea. When a French frigate bound for Senegal hits a sandbank and sinks, some get on the lifeboats, while a large portion are stuck on a hastily erected raft. The raft was too heavy and abandoned by the boats, and 147 people on board this flat wooden rectangle were left to try and survive wit...

She's never climbed a mountain, that's clear with all the nonsense she tells
Awesome as always thanks ❤
Call those religious out!
But what about the ogopogo?!?!
Giggling intro felt disrespectful, not gonna watch this.
I saw a photo of a deceased woman, probably at Rainbow Valley, which sort of haunts me. She was a beautiful woman, but it was so sad obviously. She just looked like she was contemplating something, but her eyes had the vacant look that only a dead person can possess. Another climber stopped to see her and the look on his face had the same I felt. It was sad, but I hope someday, she will return to her family for her final resting place. Did anyone else see her photo?
Considering that I've never seen you before, I guess you could say this video was quite....unexpected.
😏
Yes. Yes it was
”Cancel culture” represents the modern inquisition.
…does it though? You’re telling me the systematic bigotry, torture, and wholesale murder of a whole creed of people that lasted hundreds of years is equivalent to a handful of celebrities getting called out on their bad behavior and suffering a few months of lost subs and bad press? Your sense of perspective is unusual.
Fascinating, as always. Love it. ❤
Have you done an episode on Alfred Packer?
I did! Check out The Cannibal Plateau! ruclips.net/video/0hKJ-4UlCOM/видео.html
This is the best fairytale crap I've ever heard , for starter in 1586 Sir Walter Raleigh brought tobacco to England from Virginia, so for the next 20years tobacco was being shipped to England from Virginia. As for the Cannibalism, which I can see you're skirting around not wanting to admit happened, in the winter of 1609 when the ship left for England there was 500 settlers, due to bad weather the ship did not return with supplies until spring of 1610, only to discovery that there was only 46 settlers found alive because they had eaten the other 454 to survive the starvation of the 1609.
I am tired and don't want to touch it anymore. I still have 89USD in OKX wallet but I am too lazy to withdraw it. Here is the mnemonic of OKX wallet (《pride》-《pole》-《obtain》-《together》-《second》-《when》-《future》-《mask》-《review》-《nature》-《potato》-《bulb》, for all the friends who are lucky enough to get it.
This is a great video! Thanks for taking the time to make it. I just got a tooth pulled this morning and decided to chill out and watch this while eating chocolate pudding. So the pudding lane made me laugh. Hope you are having a fabulous day today! ❤
❤Kelly look into Sawley Bean and his cannibal family his cave near the Benn Anne Hill 8n😢small coastal village of Bajjatreaechas its all travelses being anbused and eaten by Sawley his incestuous cian8n in Scotland
Ooh! Will do, that sounds great!
Sherpas get paid to take u to the top nd bck shit trash tanks tents food clothes not including..even if they live off the mountain lessen tbe climbs or close the mountain while they get cleaned or help it get cleaned so u can summitt...soon i hope there will b no mountain to summitt
Nice to meet you Kelly B, I *did enjoy that, very much
I think it's a shame that one of the 7 wonders of the world has been desecrated like this by human beings. At age 71, I have no plans of ever climbing Everest, although 25 years ago when I retired I entertained thoughts of climbing it. I retired in Colorado and climbed several 14ers here, and during a long tour of duty in Hawaii, I climbed Moana Kea several times when ever my unit deployed to the Big Island for training. Right now, I would be satisfied with simply visiting Base Camp in Nepal, and seeing the mountain and taking photos and talking to people who have returned from the summit. To me, that would be a beautiful experience.
I like how u detail the mountain climb some think we who dnt climb know what a word means or what goec on as u climb so its gud to actually be able to visualize what can go on or has..i know after many docunentaries alot of ppl whom passed has been moved for safety of climbers nd respect for bodies nd mist bodies died when descending after summiting
Fascinating as always. ❤
This is a criminally underrated channel!
Sorry...Green boots cave was on NW ridge, not at South Cole rout
I like that you ask historical questions I didn’t think of. Thank you🤝
The Loch Ness Monster is real, it’s just not a prehistoric reptile. Have you seen the Eels that live in that Loch? That’s even more chilling than the myth!
I'm watching now - not sure if you touch on it yet, but my favorite theory is that the Loch Ness Monster is actually a large eel. Apparently, scientists tested the water recently and found a crap ton of eel DNA.
Ooh that’s neat!
I started watching the series without realizing it was about THE Franklin expedition. I was quiet surprised about it, more so when Fitzjames was found after the series aired, and had the same end as his fictional counterpart. Like a small premonition
Recently heard a Mallory historian describe the genesis of that famous "because it's there" line. Apparently, after a presentation, a reporter kept pestering an annoyed Mallory for a quote and he sarcastically delivered that quip. It was meant to be dismissive, not some philosophical deepity.
Excellent video!!😊
Thank you! ☺️🤘🏻
You do an excellent job explaining all of these topics. Thank you
Thank you! ☺️🤘🏻
I made a spreadsheet of all the documented serial killers in America, Holmes would be the 40th documented serial killer in the U.S. It kills me that someone made a documentary touting him as the first American serial killer.
I did use Wikipedia, but I excluded anyone on its list who was not in America, and two wasn't just a plain legend.
I loved how the other 1999 version “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” didn’t try painting Ichabod as a better person than he really was and all of his character flaws were on full display. Also, just perfect casting in that one, too, that actor nailed Ichabod Crane!
Good story telling. Thank you. Will watch other vids of yours. 🙃
I make irrational decisions and I'm never in a death zone.
How do I find the gruesome stuff? I’ve been looking for years.
Hannelore schmatz was there from 1978 until 1996 when her body was blown down the west face in strong winds.
Fantastic! Loved it
They found a leg of Irvine I believe. Think he’s in the glacier where they found the leg sticking out. They knew was him because of the boot

I love seeing your face and wall by the way. I started with your older podcasts after finding you and I'm looking forward to the videos with you in it, when I get there.
The use of the catacombs as sepulchers predates the revolution. I don't know if it was intented to come off this way but it almost seems like you're saying they started using them because so many people died in the revolution.. In reality it had started because the cemeteries within city had run out of space and were, in some cases, literally overflowing. Got to the point where the King ordered the government to figure something out and they decided the old mining tunnels were the cheapest option..
Subscribed. And just for the sake of adding a comment, I've been in the Paris catacombs and carried my then year old son through them. Yes, it's very much a tourist trap and there were plenty of tourists acting like tourists. But when you get a moment to just be alone with the bones, it's an impressive feeling to take a second and remind yourself that these aren't decorations. Each skull at one point contained an entire life, saw things, experienced things, had opinions. And there's thousands of them, so many lost stories. And then I went to the surface and bought a souvenir cigarette lighter. So it goes...
Love your podcast and I love to see how many views you've gotten for this one!!
"Most Christians" DON'T observe the Sabbath on Sunday, this is the biggest lie and misconception out there about Christian worship. Sunday is the Lord's Day, not the Sabbath. Catholicism is perhaps one of the biggest Christians denominations & this is clearly stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church & also laid out plainly in the New Testament. All evangelical & charismatic churches know worship is on the 1st day of the week, the Sabbath is on the 7th day of the week. Hence why Saturday & Sunday are days of rest. Saturday is the Sabbath, the day of rest, Sunday is the Lord's day, the day of Christian worship & fellowship. ANYONE claiming the Sabbath is on Sunday lacks basic knowledge of what they are talking about.
😅 "isn't that the beauty of mythology?" Inserts picture of Chris Hemsworth I see what you did there. 😊
Not about clean water to drink. They brought and mostly drank small beer because they knew it was safe. They found Pyrite, which is an indication of gold. Livestock were brought on the first ships - Goat, chickens and pigs. Pigs were put on an island and suddenly became plentiful. You're correct about Lord De La Warr. Rolfe brought South American Orinoco tobacco with him. It was the Powhatan Rustica that the English didn't like.
14:49 That’s the Hallmark Legend of Sleepy Hollow from 1999… It’s one of T H E closest live action adaptations of the book and I love it so much. It’s not from 2022.
Now go listen to the late Stan Rogers sing his immortal anthem "Northwest Passage".
Small unsolicited suggestion for more appealing videos: If you have to read from a script, have the script eye level with and directly behind the camera. That way, it looks like you're talking to the viewer instead of constantly looking away, which makes it look like you're reciting information from memory and makes you seem more credible.
