#3 resonated with me the most. In between my professional journey, I took a side turn to teach for 1 year. That was the best decision I could have made. When I came back to corporate, I put those skills to use and it helped me and my team have tremendous success.

I know that I am a work in process and that I can improve on numbers #1 & #3. It can be frustrating when I feel that I don't meet the standard that I set in my own mind for this. I do check in with my staff to be sure I am giving them what they need and ask for their honest feedback so I can improve. Thanks for the list, Galen!

Hi Galen, great video! I have a quick question. My colleague and I have two different types of leadership styles. He is very direct, curses a lot, talks in an aggressive tone (not yelling), and says it how he feels (meaning he doesn't care what words he uses). Me on the other hand, is still direct, no cursing, talks in a neutral tone, and chooses my words wisely to not make someone feel disrespected (meaning I rather say something like "this is an area where you need to improve on" instead of "your ability to do XYZ is weak")
. Which scenario do you think is the better way of approaching a negative conversation?
In my opinion, if you come off like a "dick" when giving feedback, then people might not necessarily be "threatened" by the criticism you are giving them, but by the "disrepectful" way it was presented. Therefore, causing them to not take the feedback well. I believe you can still be direct and respectful at the same time.

Great question, and I totally agree with you. You can be direct and kind, which I think is way more effective in getting the results you want. It is still possible using words instead of negative behavior to convey to somebody how important or severe the feedback that you're giving them is and how seriously they need to take it. I don't think leading other people by acting like a dick or wielding fear, authority, power and superiority over them is ultimately very smart. It will cause people to do what you want but it damages your relationship with them, and ultimately people try harder and stay in their jobs longer if they like their boss. Getting people to do what you say because they're afraid of you is a pretty low caliber form of leadership, in my opinion. Respect and lift people up as their leader, you can still give honest feedback and hold them to a high bar:)
