    Another comment is that zinc oxide is as good if not better than titanium to be used as a sun blocker. I think it blocks a few harmful rays that titanium has limited effect blocking. Also for environmental reasons try to look for ‘NONE nano’ size ones. If it is too small (like nano size) then it might hurt the coral reefs

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  2 года назад

      Thanks for additional comment. One of the recommended sunscreen's I've listed in the Description is Zinc Oxide based.
      We've tested used both these 2 products and they work well and not sticky or greasy at all. I'm not too sure if these are nano size, but will look into it.

    Great videos, thanks for the work you put into these. Trying to decide on what to buy for the intended purpose can be tough with all the options. I have one question regarding the relationship between UPF rating and likely UPF levels. You show that the shirts being tested are good all the way up into the extreme UPF levels, thus requiring a relatively heavier/less breathable/warmer shirt. But what shirt UPF rating would you choose if you only needed a shirt capable of protection from, say, Moderate Level 5 to Very High Level 8? Or in other words, if a person wanted find a better balance between Extreme Protection/Heavy/Warmth and Lower Protection/Ultralight/Cooler, what UPF rating would be better? 15? 30? (I realize there is subjectivity in this, based on skin type, etc.)

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  Год назад

      Thanks for watching and very glad you like my videos!
      I would recommend the following:
      UV Index 3-5 = UPF 15 - 40
      UV Index 5-6 = UPF 40 - 50
      UV Index 6+ = UPF 50+
      So it seems the sweet spot would be UPF 40+ rating, like TNF Wander Sun Hoodie as shown in this review and Patagonia's new Tropic Comfort Natural Hoody. However, both these hoodies have fairly heavy fabric. But, the honorable mentioned UPF 50 Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoodie might currently be the best balance for what you are looking for.
      The best weight/cool to sun protection performance sun hoody IMO was the Arc'teryx Phasic Sun Hoody as shown in this video, but is discontinued.
      So I would suggest to check out the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoodie. I know I will and perhaps doing an updated review for 2023.
      Cheers!

  • @hanwagu9967
    @hanwagu9967 Год назад +2

    the credit card hip pocket is on the right side of the Female version of the BD Alpenglow hoody. Both the OR and BD use separate stitching for the tag from the seam, so you can remove the stitching to remove the tag rather than cutting it off. Not sure how that kind of water test is meaningful. You put a couple drops ontop of folded clothes. no columbia zero rules hoodie, or REI Sahara Shade Hoodie? You included two hoodies (Patagucci cap cool and TNF wander) that don't meet your should have criteria. so you could have included those two that do, or include OR Echo Hoodie.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  Год назад +4

      Hello and thanks for watching and the great comments! Very glad to see comments like yours that notice some of the interesting details in the review :-)
      Yes, it is very strange why Black Diamond advertises the credit card hip pocket for the men's Alpenglow Hoody, but do not include it; but yet it's included in the women's version. My guess is that either it's a copy and paste error of the description from the women's version to the men's description page or maybe an older version had it and BD did not update their description for the new version.
      The water drop test is very representative of my experience after many uses and especially after daily running and in some cases swimming with each of these hoodies, or accidently falling off my paddle board and noting how fast I dry. While drying can depend on many factors such as my own body temperature, weather and being in direct sunlight, you do get a general sense of dry time after many uses. The good thing about the water drop test is that it is a more controlled and a more convenient way to reflect my experiences without have to dip myself in the pool or nearby lake during my paddle boarding excursions and all the other variables. In addition, others can replicate the same test and compare with their own observations from their activities.
      Regarding the other Sun Hoodies you mentioned, while it would be good to review those (and for me, I'm particularly interested in the Kuiu Ultra 120 LT Merino UPF50+ Hoody), but unfortunately, I don't have the financial means and time to purchase every single hoody on the market and am not sponsored by any of the Brands for the products I review. I simply try and purchase what's on sale based on my own research and what fits comfortably for me, and try them out for their intended and sometimes non-intended design use for extended amount of time from months to years in some cases, and then do a review when I find time in hopes it may help others in their research and purchasing decisions.
      Hope this helps answer your questions.
      Cheers!

    Curious about the comment at 14:31 : "If it were intended to be worn as a base layer". Do you not wear your sun shirts solo?
    I don't want a layering system in the heat.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  Год назад

      Hello and thanks for watching and the observation!
      Typically, a base layer top is tucked under your pants, whereby the typical areas where tags are sewn (and subsequently cut leaving stitching) would be rubbing against your skin and cause skin irritation, if not designed right like what Arc'teryx has implemented in their baselayers.
      However, for Sun Hoodies, yes they are also meant to be next to skin except the area where most tags are sewn which would be layered over the pants/shorts and not tucked under. Thus, these tags would not cause any skin since they are not in contact with the skin by design.
      Hope this helps clarify! Cheers

    Which sun hoodie do you recommend for multi day desert races/treks such as the marathon des sables across the saharan desert?

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. As I have never done MDS, I would defer you to this link, which suggests separate arm sleeves like the OR ActiveIce sleeves:
      www.myracekit.com/blog/desert-kit-list-clothing/
      "Do I need long sleeves for sun protection?
      The short answer is no. Unless your skin is extremely sensitive to sunburn. A long-sleeved shirt may be warmer though the Raidlight Desert Top offers an excellent, very thin alternative and with UPF25 protection built into the fabric. A very flexible middle ground can be to use a T-shirt with separate arm sleeves. This wat you can use the arm sleeves for sun protection, and you can also use them to complement the T-shirt if you get cold during the night of the long stage or in camp at night. If you were thinking of bringing a long-sleeved shirt as an extra warm layer, then a T-shirt plus arm sleeves will be a lighter solution. Check out the Outdoor Research Active Ice cooling arm sleeves with UPF25 or the X-Bionic Energy Accumulator Summerlight. Both are great options. If you are very worried about sun protection you can also consider Outdoor Research’s Chroma Sun Gloves. They work particularly well for walkers using poles as gloves protect the hands from getting blistered."

    • @darkfoxjj
      @darkfoxjj Год назад +1

      People exposed to the sun a lot have a higher chance of skincancer. So UV protection is definitely recommended.
      Sunscreen should be (re)applied thick for it to have the tested protection and blocks pores. Therefore UPF clothing is more practical imo.

    Do all these hoodies lose effectiveness of uvb upf sun protection after say a handful of washes?

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  Год назад

      Hello and thanks for watching and good question!
      While there is no data available that I know of or any kind of commercially available tool to test this, it would be safe to assume that there will be a small drop in UPF production, but as long as the material does not look or feel overly worn out, it should still be 50+.
      Hence, always better to get a UPF 50+ rated shirt, since it may be UPF 70 new and UPF 60 after several washes, hence still UPF 50+

      @weekendgearguide  2 года назад

      Hello and thanks for watching and the question!
      As noted at ruclips.net/video/cBmucXHu0cQ/видео.html, there is a discrepancy on the website between the description showing UPF 50+ in the Details description and UPF 50 shown on the list of features, and due to this discrepancy, the MH Crater Lake was not compared but listed as an Honorable Mention.

    Love your informative review. Another criteria that would be helpful to include is how bug-proof it is. I wear a north face sun hoodie (discontinued pass season style) and the mosquitos can easily bite thru it. A PCT hiker wearing a Kuiu told me his hoodie material is bug proof. I don’t know how anyone would gather this information other than wearing it and head into a high bug pressure area, test it and spread the word.

    • @weekendgearguide
      @weekendgearguide  2 года назад +6

      Thanks for watching and the additional criteria suggestion. I can definitely say from experience that most of these sun hoodies especially thin fabric hoodies like the Capilene, Alpenglow and ActiveIce are not mosquito proof especially where the fabric is in constant contact with the skin like on the shoulders and upper back. It would be interesting to know what that Kuiu hoodie is. I suspect it may be a made of nylon with a high denier and if that's the case, it most likely is not very breathable.

    I recently had to go on a 100mg twice daily dose of doxycycline antibiotic right at the start of summer and paddle boarding season. I'm a little worried about sun sensitivity burns, but I want to keep paddle boarding, so I'm buying UPF gear. I have several outdoor research echo hoodies that I really enjoy, but I think the UPF-20 rating is potentially a little low for this use case. I just bought a UPF-35 long sleeve Bluesmiths Kanaha, but I wish it had a hood. I appreciate this video because I didn't even know most of these products existed. I had read about the black diamond alpenglow hoody, but I had no idea the other offerings existed. Awesome video. I plan to avoid peak sun and only paddle after 6pm. Hopefully UPF-35 is sufficient, but if it isn't, I'll try one of these other products for sure. What an interesting clothing category.
