So did Honda, Ford, Toyota.. all of them have mad recalls lately, and o er the years, Tesla had to recall a few thousand, the others recalled millions lately lol pretty crazy to just cherry pic like that, almost makes you look foolish..
@@BaldHeadedManc OK, I guess no one even tried to understand reference to Cybertuck's steer by wire. I got it.
Whoever did the "Controller Disconnected" edit was brilliant 😂
But damn, this is a new fault that I didn't know would happen!
Everyone with a grain of salt knew it was bound to happen. Who the fuck binds their steering wheel to some wires and some electrical signal, it's madness. Steering should NEVER be anything else but mechanical. Or even better, a hybrid of wires and mechanical rod, in case of malfunction of either of those. But you can bet which system will fail first.
@@blastmanutz7798 It is not by wire. Even if you lose power steering you can still steer it's just bit harder depending on speed to do so therefore it's not that dramatic as it seems. You won't just lose the capacity of steering mid drive, and yes i'm talking about the bmw m3 g80.
@@davidceky it doesn't look like it on the video though. He literally nearly went off track at high speeds.
Is it direct connection or not in the system bmw uses for the m3? As I know there are some variations in the epas system.
@@blastmanutz7798 The car has a steering rack (mechanical steering), but the power steering went off I guess. The G80 is a heavy car, not to forget. It can be hard to steer it.
So youve basicly just won the lottery with the rain storm... if it would have been a sunny day, and u would go flat out, idk what would have happened with that steering failure. thats scaaary.
Maybe it's rain related and there is water in the electronics. Very scetchy non the less.

@@danielwlodawer1282 Seems HIGHLY unlikely as cars tend to be damn near waterproof especially these days. Outside of a flood you should have no worries about some water.
@@poppachoppa8956 It could be temperture related maybe IDK. It was absolutely freezing there and maybe the ECU froze a bit? I know the car got warmed up and anything but I don't think electronics get the same treatment as the engine and what not when it comes to temperture. It could be related to the weather but I also think its highly unlikely.
@@poppachoppa8956 It only takes a misplaced rubber seal or a blockage in the wrong place to ruin that. Faults still happen.

You know the conditions are bad when Misha turns on TC 😂
Thanks for confirming my irrational fear of electronic steering 😂
All normal eps has failsafe . This one clearly does not .
Unnecessary worry. The electronic power steering used by BMW is always connected by a rod. It is not shift-by-wire, where there is no rod between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism.
What Misha experienced was aquaplaning, which manifests similarly to the steering wheel being disconnected from the wheels.
If the EPS fails, it only makes the steering wheel harder to turn because the motor does not assist in turning the wheels. However, the difference is not so noticeable while driving.
EPS, like hydraulic power steering, simply facilitates steering. But the steering wheel is always connected to the steering mechanism.
Shift-by-wire does not involve a connection between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism. However, BMW has never used this type of steering in any of its.
Electric power steering is a lot more reliable than an old hydraulic rack. Steering feel usually leaves a lot to be desired, but there are fewer points of failure.
People were afraid of hydraulic brakes too way back in the dawn of automobiles.
Hey I did say it was irrational to be fair.
@5:27 controller disconnected.
The look on the owners face when he realized the car is going straight.....into the wall 😂
Imagine building cars for many MANY decades. And then building one, where the steering can disconnect........
Total fail of the car industry. Never can trust more in a car with this error.
Can happen in any car with power steering when electronics crap out. It's not disconnecting here, notice the steering wheel isn't moving much either, it's probably just very hard to move when power steering goes out (it's a heavy beast, and generally a dead PS motor adds additional effort vs the old non assisted racks).
@@Matthew-nl9kdYeah my M340i is super difficult to steer with no power steering, almost feels like you need to break the wheel
The power steering failed, not all steering

A few years ago BMW asked me to pay 4000€ to fix the AFS (active front steering) on a 123d e87...
A nightmare...
Is "active front steering" a real option. What if you didn't get one. Passive steering like imaginary steering drive 😂
Active steering is an option that adjusts the steering ratios depending on the speed. For example at low speeds, it adjusts it so you don’t need to turn the wheel as much for full lock
Impressed that you finished the lap instead of calling it quits at the mid point.

Used the outside line quite a lot, thanks to watching your videos. Also I was only about 30 seconds slower than you! But I didn't pull over to restart my car, so there's that.
Misha's ability to find and adapt to surprise faults in cars is a testament to his skill and experience.
Holy shit! That's absolutely terrifying!
The hail reminded me of the 24 hour race where almost everyone went straight into the Aremberg gravel trap and barrier because of the hail on the track. 😅
G80 still has psychical steering column right (at least according to parts catalogs)? Really weird what happened. Maybe electronics were straightening up wheels, because they went crazy, because they were soaked in water?
Must be aqua planning, because the wheels are mechanically attached to the steering wheel. There simply can't be a "short disconnection" of the front axle from the steering wheel unless something major snapped in half, but then the steering would be gone for good.
@@astrodoge5523 yea - thats what I was thinking, because my straighthening theory has flaw - Misha would feel on steering wheel that rack does something. So I guess it's a very bad aquaplaning + errors from soaked electronics.
BMW variable steering is sort of half steer by wire. On top of the power steering, there is a motor helping turning. That second motor controls the steering wheel angle, so the steering wheel is not connected to the fixed world directly.

that's not broken, it's normal, you're getting the full-on BMW experience
At 4:40 you can see that the redline starts to slowly drop from 8000 to 1000 rpm. The exact same thing happens at 10:20, just watch the thin red segments that start to descend to 1k. Just before he says drivetrain issue. There is also a yellow zone that starts to appear bellow the rev "needle" on the display in both cases. The older BMWs had LEDs on the rev meter to reduce the redline when the engine was cold, and the redline got higher as the engine temp got closer to optimum. This seems to be the digital version of the same thing, so maybe some sensor failures are causing it to limit the revs to 1000...
That amount of rain would have traffic crawling at 20mph with the hazard lights on here in the US. Here you are racing through it. 🤣🤣
Slowly getting colder over here in Australia Misha so you should start getting warmer weather soon mate 😂

@@the_batmobile0.4 bruh it's a redundant system that is secured at least twice and the steering can't disconnect. The car wasn't turning because of aquaplaning or there was a problem with the power steering / assistance
Man you show that watch so much that I'm surprised that there are no buy links in video descriptions.
you can turn off the engine and restart while driving / rolling - just ( put gearbox to N and ) tap 3 times ( fast ) the start/stop engine button or longpress 3s. then the engine turns off and press again for restarting the engine
something electrical got wet clearly.
had a similar issue with an f30, the steering box failed and required replacement. Even a light blow to the wheels can damage it. Its surprising after 11 years its still a common problem.
It would be nice to know what error codes it threw out from that. Might give some idea about the problem.
5:37 Looks like a huge puddle down there in Fuchsröhre. So maybe the car wasn't turning at 5:40 because of aquaplaning or there was a problem with the power steering / assistance.
For sure, the steering can't disconnect on this BMW. Furthermore, it's a redundant system which is at least doubly secured
So much for these electrical steering systems having multiple redundancies and failing safe 🤔Is this electrical power assist or full drive by wire?
It's just electrical assist. The redundancies are the same as any other BMW from the past 30 years.
Not sure what you mean by multiple redundancies? The actuator is a single point of failure, the control electronics are a single point of failure. If the electronics decides to short out and lock up the steering you won't be able to overpower it.
There is no drive by wire in any series production car except Tesla Cybertruck
@@Phoenixklingeand Infiniti Q50/nissan skyline
@@PhoenixklingeInifiniti Q50 Q60, Toyota bZ4X, Lexus RZ450e and those are just production cars. Maybe read up before making claims
The G80 has a mechanical steering with electrical power assist (EPS)
It can't be disconnected unless there is a major mechanical breakage.
Now the brake pedal is brake by wire with a mechanical redundancy system to the braking circuit as a safety :P
Now imagine that happens in a cybertruck that has no steering column! At least if it's just electric assist, you still have control of the vehicle. With full electric steering you lose steering completely.
all 3 systems should fail in the Cybertruck case, like an F-16. If only one fails you get a red alarm, it's not like it's gonna let you take a stroll on your last steering motor XD
Love the thumbnail title!
I own an M3 Xdrive and certain temperatures combined with the traction control when underload makes the cars drivetrain malfunction. I have this happen and its as if it 2nd gear out but in actuality it just cut all the power.
In other word a BMW doing BMW things
My old is350 powersteering would cutout when I was on the track mid corner. The steering ECU would fault out. Only way to fix was to shut off or replace. I would just man handle it until the end of the session then hope it wouldn't turn off again. It got sweaty quick.
"Controller Disconnected".. Feeling some Oceangate vibes here😅
Thats interesting. You couldnt steer because it was harder than before or wheels are completly disconected from sterring wheel so computer steer for you?
insane malfunction
Im sure the previous gen f80/f32/f30 has issues with the steering column. Seems they made that issue worse on the g series
Some mechanics are right when they say buy a car with the fewest electronics. As for german reliability, it has probably gone on a long excursion in recent years.
Unpopular opinion here, as a car mechanic.
German quality wasn’t very good to begin with. ESPECIALLY with BMW. There were a few “more than okay” models but that was the best they could
I don't mind at all seeing more and more G series BMW go around the ring. Beast of a car
I've never loved the idea of a steering column more in my life 😅
Страшно было смотреть аж дух перехватывало на торможении в поворотах и максималка на прямых до срыва колеса…вау Браво 👏🏻 очень круто 👍
My guess is since this is an Xdrive car, the front wheels were hydroplaning giving the illusion of no steering. My WRX with worn PSS with any power to the front axle in a very wet condition acted this way.
Possibly low battery of the controller.😂🤣😂🤣
If this can happen at random, it makes you wonder if you could drive these new Ms fast with confidence in the one thing that used to be so reliable, I once crashed a TTS and it shut off my steering before the crash had finished!😂 that was the scariest part tbh
I would say water got into somewere. It happened to me in a car wash water got into my DME box in my bmw it went crazy.

This is a little known fact - BMW uses blinker fluid for steering as well, if the owner uses their indicators too much, it depletes the blinker fluid and steering doesn't work anymore. Therefore it is is not recommended to use blinkers that much in a BMW.
Wait what caused that weird steering issue? Is it a modification that's on the car or is it something else?
That looks almost like the car has some dynamic ratio power assist running from a system related to the ECU/BCM or other drive-related module, and Misha powering through all the standing water giving it big inputs caused some weird ABS/wheel slip/differential sensor readings, so the module failed itself safe and disabled all the enhancements. Including power steering...
Seems like a fairly niche edge case given most people wouldn't be hooning round Nords in torrential storm weather, but a very scary failure mode nonetheless 😮 the owner will know not to do that in future! Could be useful info with Norway's conditions.
Of course, the car might just have lemon electronics and need a loom or module replacing 😅 here's hoping he has some success with BMW. Would be interesting to get a follow-up.
Considering the shifting issue that happened just before, I'd say it was an electronics fault just messing with everything. Maybe some water tripped something or there was an issue with battery/alternator power. Issues with battery power tend to cause all sorts of random weirdness in cars as it interferes with every component at once.
@@Matthew-nl9kdThere was no “shifting” issue in the sense that the car just didn’t allow Misha to shift. In this fail-safe mode BMW lowers the redline to 1300RPM and does not allow it to exceed hence no downshifting occurred but when he slowed down he could downshift. I believe the original commenter is correct.

The only thing that is logical in this situation is because of the heavy rain some water finds it's way to the steering electrical connection or some wire has loos pin..something along these lines.
But still, it has to be looked after ASAP
im 100%% sure is about this rain, the moment he left that heavy rainfall, error popped out on screen. Water went somewhere.
Isn’t there a steering shaft still connected as a backup if the electric one fails? Was there just suddenly a huge dead spot?
At first it looked like maybe understeer in a wet spot but you would have probably been able to tell better in person and feeling it in the steering or lack of steering lol
this is not a normal steering rack, it has a differential in the middle with an electric motor to make it "variable"
My god, that could have been horrific…Well done Misha for keeping so calm..I would have pulled off after that to change my man nappy..lol. 🙏🏻
The steering never "disconnected", considering its literally impossible for it to do so. The M3 has electric power steering, not steer-by-wire. All that means is that the power steering is powered by an electric motor, rathe than a hydraulic pump. That means there is still always a permanent mechanical connection to the front wheels.
Dont you hate it when you go to the Nurburgring and forget to pay your power steering subscription?
thats probably quite a almost scary scenario especially in a downpour
Would the zones with more rubber which get slippier in rain conditions be a concern in normal road driving or just on track?
