Coincidentally I've had that same nagging. Never would've remembered Jeff Bridges, kept thinking it was breakdown and remembered the motive with pitch clarify. Either searching is easier or I'm better at it!

@@-sherrymokey- : So sad. Raymond was so DISTURBED & DETERMINED. Unfortunately & understandably, Rex couldn’t move on so his need for CLOSURE cost him his life. I liked the ‘93 version because I’m a big fan of Sandra Bullock & Jeff Bridges. I still get the chills when I think about it. Quite suspenseful. It’s scary to think that certain people plan their crimes so meticulously, that they can kidnap someone during the day where many other people are circulating. (*art mimicking reality).

I remember watching this when it first came out at the theater. It was an excellent movie but I've forgotten most of it. Looks like I'm going to have to watch it again!
If you're not against watching international movies I'd highly recommend watching "Spoorloos" it's the movie this one is based of and the ending is so much better (in my opinion) it's in Dutch btw

ARGGHHHHH this movie isn't available anywhere. I watched the OG Danish version last night and was blown away. I remember seeing scenes of this version on cable in the mid 90's and the images never left my mind.

This movie is okay.
But the original, called Spoorlos (from the Netherlands, I believe), is probably one of the most traumatic movies I have ever seen.
Kubrick called it the most terrifying movie ever made.
I strongly suggest any thriller fan out there to look it up and watch it. It's cold and ...evil. And the ending. My god, the ending...
Give it a chance. Even if you're not used to European movies and their rythm, trust me. You'll thank me later
I'm torn. I found the killer in the original just too silly, but I preferred the darker ending. I absolutely hated the new annoying girlfriend Nancy Travis in the remake, but I loved Jeff Bridges performance as the killer. The book is amazing.

this remake was an insult to the original, it wasn't because of the acting, or the direction, it was simply the ending that really ruined the film for me, the originals ending was brilliant this one was just a bad joke
What sickos want EVIL to triumph? I saw a similar movie in the theatre the slobs guffawing as the hero is wacked with a shovel to then die.
And to think that Sluizer did that to his own baby. I wonder if he was pressured to do it.
I just started the orig 1988 version last night but fell asleep like only a quarter way into it only because I was very tired and I plan to finish it today. I did a channel search to stream it and the only place I found it on was good ole RUclips and it's a good clean focused ratio-correct copy except it has no English captions or option to do so.

I'm reading the book this was based on for school and just found out it had two adaptations, looks like a very promising movie.
PS; the orginal book is called "Het Gouden Ei" by Tim Krabbé but the English translated book is called "the vanishing" just like the movie.
I didn’t know it was based on a book! I usually like reading the book before seeing the movie. I saw this years ago and totally forgot the name and couldn’t find it forever and just did! Thanks for the book title, I’m going to look into it now and read it!

You said she left you; She did! So why do you have all her pictures (they were in a box in my closet..) Because.... Why R you getting so upset? I'm not! You've been lying to me haven't you? Haven't you Jimmy? No I..... God damn you woman! Just tell me the truth, you might not wanna hear it, I can take it, But some lies R necessary.... Why? Because sometimes the truth is worse, and I still don't know.... What happened, what do you mean? I watched this when I was a kid and was traumatised. I recently made the Mrs watch Breakdown thinking this was it, but obviously I was mistaken. Now I have to try make her watch this, it was hard enough the first time. Wish me luck 😂
