🧅 What is the VIRAL Onion Boil?!
The Onion Boil is a recent social media sensation where whole onions are simmered in a spiced, buttery broth until they become ultra-soft, sweet, and infused with flavor. Think of it as a twist on a seafood boil-except instead of shrimp and crab, you get... onions. LOTS of onions. People online claim it’s the ultimate comfort food and say it tastes like French onion soup in its purest form. But does it really? 🤔
We decided to put it to the test and see if it’s actually worth making or if it’s just another overhyped TikTok trend.
🏆 THE CHALLENGE: Two Brits, One Viral Recipe
Neither of us grew up eating anything like this. In the UK, onions are typically used as ingredients rather than the main event of a dish. So, naturally, we had questions:
🔥 Would it be flavorful or just taste like onion water?
🔥 Could we make it better with our own British twist?
🔥 And most importantly... would we actually enjoy eating an ENTIRE onion as a meal?! 😳
To make things even more fun, we decided to compete:
🔹 Nicola follows the internet’s most popular Onion Boil recipe-no changes, no tweaks, just exactly as the viral posts recommend.
🔹 Andrew adds a British spin to the dish, using UK-style seasonings and techniques to see if he can improve it.
At the end, we do a blind taste test to determine which version is better and whether we’d ever eat this again!
🛒 The Ingredients: What You Need to Try This at Home
If you’re feeling brave and want to recreate this at home, here’s what you’ll need:
✅ Whole onions (white or yellow work best!)
✅ Butter (LOTS of it)
✅ Chicken or vegetable broth
✅ Garlic cloves
✅ Cajun seasoning (or your favorite spice mix)
✅ Lemon juice
✅ Bay leaves
✅ Worcestershire sauce (because we HAD to add a British touch!)
✅ Optional: Chili flakes, fresh herbs, or cheese for extra flavor

As Brits living in the USA, Andrew and Nicola are no strangers to exploring classic American dishes. But mac and cheese is a sacred comfort food, especially when it goes viral. For two people who grew up with shepherd’s pie and Sunday roasts, this dish represents a quintessential slice of American culture
💡 Fun Facts About Mac and Cheese
Did you know mac and cheese dates back to the 13th century? Yep, it was first recorded in an Italian cookbook!
Kraft mac and cheese, the boxed variety, became a pantry staple during the Great Depression because it was cheap and easy to make.
Over 2 million people in the U.S. eat mac and cheese every day!
You guys seem to have forgotten that you all put Worcestershire sauce on one and not on the other. That, paired with the fact that Andrew had a lighter had with the seasonings, changed the flavor profile of his onion. But you tried something different and found a new food item you may try again. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah we made two very different versions 🤣🤣🤣Thank you for watching!!
Old Bay is the predominant seasoning in a seafood boil, hence calling it an onion “boil”.
That makes a lot of sense.
Old Bay and Tony’s Creole season are both salt (with spices in it). When I use them, I use one or the other. Otherwise, the dish becomes too salty. I’ve seen people on RUclips cook a dish and they add: onion salt, garlic salt, season salt, etc. I also say to myself, “DAMN that’s salty” 🤣 Old Bay is used to season chicken. Very delicious
Luckily it was not too salty, but I can see how it could become too salty!😊🤔
I've never seen this before. Blooming Onion yes but not this. Interesting. Dang those Onions has my eyes watering. 😢😂
Blooming onion, yum!
lol! Give it a try and let us know what you think 😊
If you put that in a jar and use an immersion blender, you could use it as seasoning on it's own or spread for bread. Like an onion jam.
Oh now you are talking! That we are going to have to try. 🤗
@@TwoBritsTry Yes, so good. Maybe you need to look into making tomato jam too.
You found Old Bay! It’s typically put on seafood and chicken but we put it on literally everything in Maryland, you can even get Old Bay caramel popcorn and it’s amazing.
Oh that sounds interesting!! We would love to visit Maryland
I nearly had a stroke watching y'all dump all that sodium on between Tony's, Old Bay, and then salt itself. 😂😂😂 Usually, these seasonings are used separately on their own because of the salt content in each. As long as you guys loved it, all that matters.
I would have skipped the salt, at least!
We didn’t think about that 🤣🤣🤣 thanks for watching
Love the video. One idea, that seems great, and practical, is to make food from around the world. Canada's -poutine, Ireland's - Shepard's Pie, ect...
That's a great idea!
That onion, a bit of Brisket and Frito Pie......winner!
Absolutely!!! That sounds amazing 🤩
Not sure why they re calling it "boiled" it's more "baked" and so delicious!!! I know amazing!! I made myself one and my 94 year old Mom one too! We both loved it! I made myself another one the next day!
Its called a boil because its seasoned using seasoning used in a seafood boil.
It's so good! But your right the name is a little misleading 🤣
Looks fantastic. I would leave the plain salt out. Tony's and old bay are already pretty salty. I love cooked onions. They go with so many dishes.
Thanks for the tips! Good call with the salt!
My family does a similar but we cut the onion in 8 sections but not cutting all the way through. Place it on heavy duty foil, into each cut we place a slice of cheese, drizzle with quite a bit of bbq sauce and wrap it up like you did. I either cook in the oven or my husband cooks it on the grill. It is good with any meats from steaks to chicken. You might want to try it for a different style.
Thank you for the tips!! They sound great for our next attempt 👍
It's also really good with a beef bouillon cube or French onion powdered soup mix. It's almost like eating French onion soup.
Thanks for the tip! Sounds great 👍
Since one is too subtle and the other is too heavy, mix the two together.
Great call! We will definitely do this next time.
I keep my onions in a crisper drawer in the fridge and it doesn’t hurt your eyes when you cut into it.
I will have to try this, it will save me from having to wearing googles. 😀
I always keep my onions in the refrigerator. Is that why I rarely have problems cutting them? (no tears)
I'm 57 and when I started cooking, my aunt told me to run cold water over the insides of your wrists and it will instantly stop the burning and the crying in your eyes from the onions. It works every time for me. I'm curious to know will it work for you? Give it a try my friends. You know I love you all's videos
Thanks for the advice!! We’ll have to give it a try 👍
Fantastic and different, thank you
Thank you for watching!😊
I suggest you get some ceramic knives. Works best on fruit, vegetables, and meat. Just don’t used them on bone or hard skinned foods.
Thanks for the tips! We didn’t know that 👍
If your grilling to the same thing with the onions wrapped in the foil right on the grill. The grilling sautes the onion it the foil. You can get the same result stir frying on the stove when adding the spices. An onion /garlic clove combo makes a great garlic bread spread too
Thanks for the tip! Sounds great 👍
I’m from Georgia and have NEVER seen this before but I will definitely be trying it soon!!!!
It was actually really good!! Let us know what you think if you try it!
Old Bay is a flavor profile that is particular to Maryland. Although, it's gone nationwide. Different places in Baltimore have similar seasonings for their steamed crabs and shrimp. I make macaroni salad, add in cooked shrimp and Old Bay. It's really good. Back home (in Baltimore, I'm in Montana) you can get Old Bay potato chips and a lot of other things. Follow the directions on steaming shrimp with it (Marylanders don't boil shrimp and crab it's steamed). Good stuff. Onions cooked similar to this go way back.
Thank you for the information, we had never hear of or tried Old Bay until very recently. It is delicious.
@@TwoBritsTry Well, here's a tip, don't put salt in any dish you use Old Bay in. We are actually cooking up some rib eyes today and I may do this to see how it goes. You should order in some Maryland crab cakes and try those. They just don't get better anywhere. The nationwide brand is Phillip's and it's too commercial and not that good. Jimmy's in Baltimore does a nice job and they ship nationwide.
We have old Bay here in California
@@mildredpierce4506 Yeah, it's being sold nationwide now. It used to be we would only be able to find it in the Maryland/Virginia area. It's the flavor of the Chesapeake Bay. I remember the first thing my mom would do when dad got orders for overseas, was go buy a big container of Old Bay. We wouldn't be able to get it in Asia or Europe. Then when we lived in Colorado and Texas, my grandmother would mail it to us.
I think you would have liked a Bloomin' Onion better.😊
We definitely have to try that next time 😊
That looked delicious. He didn't use 2 of your ingredients. Perhaps why his tastes less pungent.
I have never heard of this. Think I may try one of my own.
You should, they are delicious!😀
Stuffed onions are good, too! And creamy cucumbers and deviled eggs and pickle rolls. Wild rice stuffing and etc.
Stuffed onions are similar but you use bread stuffing or cornbread stuffing
They sound good!!! We’ll have to give them a try 👍
I love learning about American foods and recipes from you. I'm American (!!!) but I lived in the UK for many years. I'm all about British foods and products (Heinz beans (on toast or a jacket potato), a proper Sunday roast with Yorkshire puddings, spotted dick, Ribena, fruit pastilles, Coleman's mustard, Hob Nobs (milk chocolate), Branston pickle...the list is endless) but these videos are so much fun. My tastes are much more British than American at this stage but I would eat anything you guys make!
Ah thanks! All the things you mentioned are very British and very good! Especially hob nobs, I really like the dark chocolate hob nobs! We are glad you are enjoying our cooking escapades.🤗
@@TwoBritsTry Thank you so much for making such fun videos for all of us to enjoy.
To reduce tears, put your onions in the fridge for a couple of hours before cutting them.
Old Bay Seasoning is used for cooking Chesapeake Bay steamed crabs. Its main ingredients are salt, celery seed, red pepper, and black pepper.
If you can find it, buy some British Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce. It's better than any of the American brands, including American Lea & Perrins. One reason is that the British stuff is made with malt vinegar, instead of the distilled white vinegar used in most brands.
It would be interesting to see you make French onion soup.
Thank you for the tips!! We didn’t know onions in the fridge would work! Thank you
Lol you should've sprinkled a little chicken bullion powder on top.
That would have been delicious! Next time. 🤗
Yes, please!
Thanks for watching
Andrew missed one of the ingredients after Nicola put it aside...
Need : raw hamburger patties bought or made, sliced onion, potatoes cut like fries, celery sticks, carrot sticks,non-stck spray, salt and pepper or steak seasoning to shake on,foil.Lay out a large enough piece of foil to wrap one patty and some of the veggies, spray, lay a patty, season, lay some of the veggies(enough to fill but close tight),spray veggies, season.Seal to retain liquid.Bake in a moderate oven or to the side of the direct heat of a grill about an hour, flipping halfway through. If it smells toasty it should be done, check the meat.If i is done through eat out of foil or dump on a plate.Used to cook this on the embers of my firepit or in my grill. It's called a Hobo Joe,Hobo Dinner or Hobo Pack.
Thanks for much for the recipe, we will have to give it a go!🤗😀
You guys are so fun, but the reason it went viral is because all the onions were chitchatting at night at the grocery store how to make themselves more popular🤣🤣 Florida girl😊
lol!! So true… how can we sell more onions?!?
Dad used lemon juice, butter and Tony Chachere on his. I like lemon, butter, garlic and Nature's Seasoning on mine. Then throw them on the pit once wrapped in foil. No extra salt needed since both seasonings already contain salt and pepper.
Dad always used 305 onions. I think that's what they're called. Basically just giant yellow onions.
Suggestion: meet somewhere in the middle on the amount of seasoning. 😂
Sounds great! Thanks for the ideas for next time 😊
The old bay is salty. Onions prepared this way is delicious with steak. Yummy.
We thought about eating them with a steak, they would be delicious!
@ Yes and try getting a sweet onion. You guys are awesome.
Eating just onions had a very long history. Onions were used during lien times in human history like during the world wars and the Great Depression this way because onions grow easy and can be stored in cans and dried out, etc. that’s why we have stuffed pickled onions and other canned pickled products. It’s survival food that’s been around for centuries now chefs and people are refining the old version of baked onions to fit modern tastes.
Thanks for the info 😊
I would do the same thing you guys did, but add some whole or halved garlic cloves to the bottom of the onion, so they get nice and soft and mixed with with the butter as it melts in the oven. Them mash or blend the whole thing, add some fresh herbs and spread it on some nice bread as a dip? Just a quirky food lover idea 🤔🤑.
Great idea!! We might have to try that in the future 😊😊😊
Old Bay should have been in the spices section right with the salt and pepper and onion powder and garlic powder etc.
Here in Texas the Old Bay is always located with the spices are near the butcher section with the seafood section. You will also find crab boil, cocktail sauce and fried fishing coatings.
Yes it was tough to find at our local store, but they did have it! Thank you
I use the crawfish boil on tilapia. That much salt, I was thinking use the butter on pasta and throw in some crab? Fry some mushrooms in it ?
Sounds great! We’ll have to try that 😋
Wonder if you mixed the darker one into a tub of sour cream,,,kind of a type of onion style dip...may have to experiment a little.
Wow!! Great idea… we will definitely have to try this
Good with a baked potato
It would be delicious with a baked potato!😊
Andrew left out the W sauce and I don't remember if he put on paprika.
You did a good job. Have you watched the video by Emmymade about her version of the onion boil. She tried it three ways. One that followed a recipe from a cookbook from the 1800s that just roasted the onion still in its skin and without any seasoning until it was ready to eat, then just butter and salt. The other two ways were similar to yours but with two different kinds of onion. And she does something different with her butter you may want to see. I recommend you look it up. (I'd give the link but it seems that's the quickest way to make my post disappear.)
Thanks for the advice! We haven’t seen it but we’ll definitely look it up 😊
Ope! Andrew forgot to add paprika...
Your right!! Not sure he was understanding the plan🤣
You probably needed a sweet Onion like a Vidalia or Texas sweet.
That is a great suggestion!! Next time we’ll try it
I have never seen or heard of this recipe, but I don’t like onions so I don’t I would try it myself. But it did look good.
Thank you for watching!
Andrew didn't get any paprika or worchsetershire sauce. I think you should make a New England Boiled dinner, with ham not corned beef and a side of cole slaw.
😂🤣
I’d like to see you do a Turducken…you should Google that one, bet you’ll be suprised!😉 If I’m not mistaken, this one came out of Louisiana…..??
Thank you for the suggestion!!! We’ll definitely give it a try 👍
I have never heard of an onion boil
Me neither but I will give it try since onions are so cheap.
We would love to hear what you think? Thank you for watching 😊
If you could give me a shipping address, I could send you a few pounds of Vidalia Onions. If you use a Vidalia, a Walla Walla or a Peruvian sweet will make the difference between night and day. This is best to me with the sweet onions.
It's a bit much to eat it on it's own, it's a great add to a meal. Like others have said, some chicken bouillon is a great add, and only one of the seafood seasonings at a time.
Absolutely detest Old Bay, Creole is fine, but we prefer mixing butter, garlic and a Greek seasoning and spoon on onions wrap tight in foil and grill until soft.
Thanks for the tips! Sounds like a good alternative
No offense intended to anyone, but you're wrapping it in foil, so you can just peel it, cut it in half, add butter and seasoning and slap it back together. Wrap it in the foil and bake. It's the same dang thing without all the extra work
Thanks for watching
Andrew didn’t put whorecestershire sauce or paprika on his.
😂 your right !! Well spotted 👍
Corn Dip
Thanks for the suggestion!
Btw, it's not Worchestershire sauce, it's WashYourSister sauce.
🤣 thank you for watching
Unlike Britain, we have more than just one type of things, there are dozens of kinds of Onions, Apples, Tomatoes, Corn, Potatoes...look around sweetie, there's a million types of everything to be had in this country! I love to see y'all trying everything!!!
I guess you can say it’s fortunate that they live in San Diego so they have access to a wide variety of foods and choices within those foods.
Thank you for sharing
Old Bay seasoning originated in Baltimore MD. That disqualifies this dish as being southern.
Thanks for the clarification. 😊
gross 🤢🤮🤮
Thanks for watching
