Fun Facts: Toto IV won a Grammy for Album of the Year, but voters didn't nominate "Africa" for either Record of the Year or Song of the Year; they preferred "Rosanna," which was nominated in both categories and won for Record of the Year. - Also, This is used in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and also in commercials for the South African Castle Lager.
In 1982 when this song came out I was 13 years old.. when I turned 20 I made my first of many visits to Africa.. I have done many things with my life... Armed Forces, becoming a Chef, Charity Work, and other things.. but most of all, my pride and joy, is the Rescue of Endangered and or Captive wildlife..Africa has been my home away from home for over 20 years.. I love it and wouldn't change anything.. Animal Welfare is now my passion, I despise humans.
Fun fact: 2005, myself and a bunch of mates had a ‘Toto-pool-othon’, we played pool and had this song on repeat nonstop for 24 hours for charity, raised £26k for the local cancer hospice…. Nothing more than a hundred men or more could ever do… I also won FIFTY SEVEN frames on the trot… beast..😂
Gentlemen THANK YOU BOTH!! I’ve been stuck in hospital for 6 days and you both are truly helping with some pretty intense pain. I’m so very grateful for you both 💜💜💜
For real, my neighbors! Only 15-20 miles south of ya’ll here in “FayetteNam” and, yes….yes, yes, yes!…. Us in GA in summer DO ‘bless the rains’!!! 😂 Cheers, guys!
Morning guys! Such a good song! It's 6am got my headphones in and I'm singing along. Lol! Great choice! I also thought he said i miss the rains in Africa smokey......funny all this time I thought that's what it was....😂
I agree, traveling is an eye opening experience and much more valuable to me than buying random things I barely use. Also, if you decide to travel....do some research to where you're going first! Too many people I've met in other countries go there with no idea how to get around, etc.
If I could get to visit Scotland sometime soon, that would be great. I'm an auld Scotsman frae Ayrshire. I've been living in the United States full time since the 1960s. But getting to visit family back in "the old country" 🏴😉 is always nice. Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Down here on the Gulf Coast when the storms start coming off Africa and the hurricane conga line starts we jokingly say please stop blessing the rains in Africa lol
Man I hate when I forget the live! I love this song, too. Oh well! I do have to get in a recommend for Toto’s “Rosanna” though. Adore the music video. And the vocals-out of sight! 😂
BTW, if you look up this song + Italian Artists you might get kicked in the soul. Really frickin amazing version of an aleady legendary song. And the woman with THE HAIR pretty sure she was the exchange student in my chemistry class. A dead man knew when she walked by. I can smell her awesomeness through the screen. Just sayin.
I feel that you guys should take a look at the cover done by Weezer ... most specifically for the epic cameo. Weezer did a very, very good modern cover of the song.
This song has a personal Mondegreen¹ (misheard lyric). What I thought the lyric was: "Sure as Kilimanjaro rises Like an empress above the Serengeti" The actual line is: "Sure as Kilimanjaro rises Like Olympus above the Serengeti" ¹A "Mondegreen" is a misheard word, line or phrase in a song or poem. The word comes from American author Sylvia Wright. Wright published an essay in Harper's magazine circa 1954 titled "The Death of Lady Mondegreen”. Wright had heard a reading of the Scottish poem "The Bonnie Earl O' Moray" (pronounced like"Murray"). She heard a line of the poem: "They've slain the Earl o' Moray And the Lady Mondegreen" The actual line: "They've slain the Earl o' Moray And they laid him on the green" What's your favorite mondegreen? Tioraidh an-drasta 🏴
Yes, they almost didn't include it on the Toto 4 album. Guitarist Steve Lukather hated it and said he'd run down the street naked if it was a hit. Boy was he wrong. It's far from their best piece of work, though - Rosanna is probably the song that sums them up best in terms of melody, structure, production, songwriting, and musicianship.
The vibe is just timeless in this song…

This song together with Scatterlings of Africa by Johnny Clegg and Savuka, are spiritual songs for us Africans living abroad.

Hollywood's next song is " I miss the food and sands down in Mexico"😂
It’s because Mexico speaks to your soul. I get it. 😌

Why do vampire not exist in Africa? They bless the rains down there!

Weezer did a very, very good modern cover of the song.
Cool song, it had so many different sounds, you must admit, music used to be more melodic than today.

White guys with synthesizers singing about Africa. Eighties in a nutshell.
