- I moved from Texas to Manchester, England over a year ago to be with my long-distance boyfriend. Even though I did a lot of research beforehand, there were still loads of things I wish I had known. Hopefully this video helps anyone who is about to move to England too :)

Did you actually just live through the hottest UK heatwave in history (40c!) and find it too cold!? Man, i am NOT interested in moving to Texas!!!
I don't know how long the heatwave lasted in the U.K. but in the last 10 years or so 100 degree and higher days can go from May into September and be consecutive for weeks in June, July, and August.
The main thing to understand is that in most of the Southern half of the U.S. just about every home and building is air conditioned. I went to college in Massachusetts and a young woman schoolmate from the Northeastern state of Maine spent a summer in Dallas. She was surprised by how hot it was and noticed that everyone just went from one air conditioned space to another as quickly as possible. Though some always get out and do outdoor stuff in the heat. Every year some people die from heat related illnesses in the U.S..
I'm not from TX but I grew up just to the north in OKC, OK. I did go once by bus down to Austin in March of '95 and the weather was really nice.
That's one difference,that not many places have air conditioning over here. I don't,I just open the windows and doors.
@@rjjcms1 I know the experience. I live in San Diego now and not as many homes or apartments have air conditioning. So, when it gets hot, especially if it gets humid hot as opposed to the normally drier heat more typical of semi-arid climates like Southern California and the Mediterranean it can feel quite oppressive indoors.
However, I prefer natural air and breezes with open windows and doors to the more closed up experience I had growing up in Oklahoma. During the really hot days we'd often leave the shades down and closed while keeping the air conditioning going so the sun's rays wouldn't make the inside of the house hotter. This made for a darker day time experience. If you went outside during one of these hot days the contrast between having been in a nice air conditioned space to a hot, humid, sunny one could be quite jarring. Especially, since the heat can make me feel sluggish. If I was especially tired from not enough sleep the night before then I might get a headache. So, overall, I prefer the weather here than to that of Oklahoma, Texas, and that part of the U.S.. ✌and Cheeeers!🇬🇧🇺🇸

I agree,I prefer the natural daylight and warmth and breezes in and I really don't like that thing about being cooped up inside with shades down - it feels like missing out on what summer really is to me! If I'm at home relaxing I'll sit outside in the garden with a drink and a snack or ice cream and fruit and something to read and my thoughts,and relax and doze a bit and watch the different birds and the bees and the skies.
I've visited Florida and the heat there is accompanied by a lot of humidity. I also visited California and the heat was a bit drier there. Perhaps one day I'll get to visit some of the other parts and states. GBUS
@@rjjcms1 I've never visited the Southeast U.S. which is overall the most hot and humid part of the country but my mother told me that her sister lived near the Gulf of Mexico in Mississippi back in the early 1960's. She didn't have air conditioning and she said it was so humid that the clothes in her cliset would get wet and moldy after being in there long enough.
I also met a couple of young women when I was in my early twenties in the relatively cool mountains of western Massachusetts who were from Tampa Bay, Florida. They didn't like it there because they said it was always humid hot. I've heard other stories about the humid heat down there too.
In fact, scientific studies have shown that the humidity can cause your body to retain more heat because of the moisture on your skin. So, the same temperature in humid heat feels hoter than the same in dry heat. Though, you still want omto be careful going through the desert in summer. I went through Arizona on a 100 or more degree day in August and it felt like a hot furnace. Like being in a dry oven. However, there was road laying asphalt down making it even hotter on the highway. Luckily, I was just going through in a car. Fun times!!! Ok, Cheeeeers!!!!!!✌❤🇬🇧🇺🇸🌼
Ahh the proof of address is such a hassle! Luckily, I found a place to live quickly and my flatmates were from NZ so they got my on the utility bill asap. They were so great

I've noticed an increase in card-only purchases, even in large supermarkets like Tesco - where they *do* take cash payments - there are an increasing number of card-only checkouts, reducing the number of cash checkouts. A glimpse of the future, I guess.
Im on the south coast of England.. Im in shorts 9 months of the year. My sister sent me a photo of when we had snow about 15years ago and i was out in shorts a hoodie and a bobble hat. I would melt in texas
The you need an address to get a bank account but need a bank account to get an address thing is actually a big problem that causes young people to become stuck in homelessness
I think homeless charities will provide a temporary address for people that need one, e.g. for opening a bank account or applying for a job. But yeah definitely an issue - it should be that having those things fast tracks the process, but not having them shouldn't prevent you from accessing it at all.
Yes,it's a nightmare scenario that homeless charities have been trying to address. HSBC ran a recent TV advert campaign saying they offered a way out of that.

UK is more northern than New York, Boston and in Canada Nova Scotia and Montreal- so we get similar temperatures but being an island we get rain too! Much the same as most of the Northern USA.
It's only from November to February or early March that the winters can be drab,because of the short hours of daylight that coincide with the shift onto Greenwich Mean Time. It's the Spring Equinox now so the hours of daylight are going to be greater than the hours of darkness for the next 6 months - hooray!
You can definitely crack the shorts out april to september
I wear shorts ALL YEAR long in North Yorkshire (including visits throughout the UK and particularly the North West Scottish Coast). Then again I'm a stubborn old bloke approaching 70 years...
I am having a bit of a laugh lol!! NOT 'at you' but in remembering what it was like for me, when I first moved over here from California to the UK 22 years ago! My British husband and I got married in 2003. The supermarkets here are definitely a major pain, but can also be quite fun and/or funny because I think every single time I've been in TO a supermarket I'm seeing things you just would not see in the States or Canada (I think). i.e. Tinned/canned hamburgers! Frozen BIG BAGS of Yorkshire puddings! Which leads to the chocolate sponge puddings! (Or the word 'pudding' in of itself!! LOL -->> vs. the term Mousse....vs. what I know to be mousse - which would be a much more rich and dense version of (American) Pudding! ie. pudding cups! (or in Britishy terms, mousse! lol ) I don't think they have an equivalent to American Mousse! I hope if you're still over here, that you've found all that you need! And a source for your Ranch Dressing fix 😏 (I have only just learned Taco Bell was over here!! I had no idea!! I'm trying to get my hubby to go to one! oh he who is glued to his toast.... 🤣)

The average annual Temp in Manchester UK is 9.4C The average annual Temp in Amarillo TX is14C That's a big drop nearly 5 deg C. Grab some weekends away, 4 hours by train south of Manchester is Brighton The average annual Temp is 10.9C . Not cutting it I hear you. The Average Annual Temperature in Gibraltar is 18.4C its a 3.5 hour flight from Manchester for less than $100 return.

I faced many similar problems moving from the U.K. to the USA. I didn’t exist initially. Banks, Social Security, insurance and much else were very difficult.

Unfortunately, I'm not too sure about visas for US citizens, as I'm a Canadian so it's a different route. And income really depends on where you want to live! London prices are VERY different from other places in the country, so there isn't really a solid answer for it sadly
The gov.uk website should have info on different visas and as Jackie says living costs vary quite a lot across the country, so it's probably worth thinking about where you want to live and then researching costs for that area. Some visas also have a minimum income requirement too.

If I move to England I’ll feel incredibly mixed lmao, on one hand I’m from the south and I love the beautiful skies and hot summer but on the other hand I love the rainy cloudy English skies 🥲
You might prefer the south west - gets dark later than the rest of the country and is generally warmer, but has its fair share of damp days too (especially near the coast).
Except, in the Summer, we tend to be a few degrees cooler down here than the rest of the country, and we’re always wetter 😢

I've just moved back to England after 5 years in Vietnam and I'm English, and going through the exact same BS you're talking about proof of address 😅
My wife is Vietnamese and I am so tempted just to go back as the rent here is extremely over priced now to what it was when I left.
The sentence, "I'm moving from Texas to Manchester uk" imho should be enough to sanction someone for mental health.
