  • Paul Schreiber of Synthesis Technology visits Control (Brooklyn, NY) on the last city snowstorm of 2018. Nearly cancelled, Paul pulled through 2+ feet of snow to give a riveting discussion of the dos and don'ts of Eurorack modular design and production. Note: video ends after five minute break, before Paul's very special (+ secret) prize giveaway finale. Thanks to all who made it out to Control that day!
Control specializes in Eurorack Modular, vintage traditional and unusual eccentric electronic devices both analog and digital. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I really appreciate that Paul knows what he’s doing, and put that knowledge to use in engineering great products for real-world use. My MOTM is still running perfectly!

Paul has integrity as a designer and this shows in his modules. He makes very valid points here in this talk... a lot of other designers should take heed and up their game for the sake of the community.

My GOD! What an absolutely, killer crowd. It was literally dead silent in there almost the ENTIRE time he was talking.

I was initially just going to watch the bit on power, but the entire thing is gold.

Power. Definitely. I've put shrouded headers on every kit I've built, and only use keyed cables; there's simply no sane reason not to (particularly given the possible negative outcomes).

It amazes me how many people argue with this.

As was pointed out several weeks after this talk in the mentioned Low Impedance Bus Board MW forum thread, the LIBB never claimed to be the best bus board, it claimed to be the quietest. Just correcting the record here. You can check the Genus Modu web site for lots of information on bus board and power solutions including detailed measurements and system level guidance.

update from 5 years later, TL074H subseries is specified at a typical temperature drift of +-2 micro volts, so in the same range. however there’s no maximum specified so you could end up with one that’s a bunch worse, and i’m sure there’s even lower temp drift opamps nowadays as well. i’m getting a bit confused by two of the graphs that might have CMRR and PSRR swapped, but using the maximum listed voltage difference, it appears to be 100db, so again either better or comparable

Fantastic presentation. Thank you for sharing this! Invaluable information here. ... the frequency of ADs though, insane. Every 2-3mins?

World: "Switching power supplies SUCK. Pay through the nose for linear". Paul: "Fix your circuit: Don't ride the rails; put in a $0.012 capacitor". Gold.
