MX5 Interior Makeover - Nardi wood refurb, Custom gear knob and inductive charger

- The interior of my 1990 Eunos Roadster (Mazda MX5 / Miata) is a really nice place to be, but 34 years hasn't been kind to the Nardi wood rim steering wheel and hand brake, so they need refurbishing, the metal gear knob HAS to go, so Ive had a custom one made just for this car by Built by Basil, and I need a place to put and keep the phone. It's all here!

That's gearknob looks ace! Really fits the interior and exterior colour perfectly
It reminds me of a childhood visit to Alum Bay on Isle of Wight if you know what I mean?
Gearknob is stunning 👍🏻, matches perfectly
I'm not jealous of your British racing green MX5 with tan leather and wood trim, I'm extremely jealous!
Matt I love The gear knob, not only does it match the car it's also Senna helmet tribute.
Id not thought of Senna, Ill use that line in future!
Yipee looks like i could get a shout out.@@furiousdriving
Rover sounds like a loose/broken exhaust bracket
Any MX5 is lovely to own and to drive, but that one, in BRG, with the wood rim steering wheel, etc, is rather special and, if it were mine, would be an absolute keeper!
Best use of a skateboard I've ever seen!
What an improvement on that steering wheel!! I didnt think it looked bad but in comparison it's night and day!
The gear knob is brilliant not only does it match the car but being hand made and completely unique just makes it that little bit cooler
Thanks 👍
The gear knob is excellent and the video showing it’s creation is a great touch.
I do like the tasteful improvements to your Mazda MX 5
That gear knob is sick! Need to get one for my 206
15:48 Possibly JIS screws rather than Philips head. JIS screws have a tiny dimple on the head to denote they're JIS. 😃
That gearknob is personal taste as its your car, if you are happy with it that's just dandy. I would have preferred to have a plain retro wooden knob with an enamelled. emblem
Love the gear knob! Also great news on the varnish - looks amazing. I will also need to do this at some point..... WIP update; Front brakes are on. Full refurb of calipers by BiggRed and new disks/pads. The upper front control arm bolt was a pig on both sides but succumbed to grinding. New track rod ends as well. Flexi brake hoses all round next - but i need to drill the front ones out as they are stuck hard in bracket. Bleed the system then off for MOT to see what else. It's developed a flat spot on revving, probably needs a service - oil, filter, plugs & HT. Still the parts pile has diminished (for now).
holy hell, it failed. But on a really short list. Rear fog lamp (bulb must have gone as it was working). Headlight adjusters were rusty so i need to work those loose. Front reg plate (one ordered) and rear brake pipe - will get them to do as the U clip was being a pain. advis on rust (expected), oil leak and OS wheel bearing.
That is a wondercoat.
That gear nob is so cool! It's looks amazing!
Great result Matt! Love your fresh knob! 👍🏻👍🏻 🆙 like allways!
Nice knob!!
lol
Excellent work Matt looks great, the gear knob is stunning it's a piece of art on its own. One of those Blaupunkt Frankfurt retro dab radios would look very cool inside the Mazda.
I do like those Blaupunkts, Ill need one for the P6 and W123 soon as well!

Nice 👍
Great job! That gear knob is quite classy, and suits the car beautifully.
The gear knob is upcycling at its best... 👍👍👍
Lovely job but you'd found sanding easier using wire wool, the wool follows the grain rather cut across it so you get a smoother finish
Nice improvements, next to change is that radio…
Those small things really can make a big difference as you mention. With a few more small things it's an even bigger difference. A top job Matt. I must say I do like the new gear knob that is a one of one.
I'm now looking into fabricating a recessed lockable phone charging cubby hole to replace the useless twin cupholders in the center console of my NC. An inspiring video, this. 👍
Great idea!
Sun ☀and birds 🦅 singing 🎵 A very old saying, ‘Make car repairs while the sun shines’. 😄
Hi Matt, when you come to finish your steering wheel and hand brake do not use a brush use a lint free cloth to apply two coats of varnish you will get a better and smoother finish with thinner coats, hope this helps.
Great little tinkering video, it's the little things like the gear knob which and a refresh on the steering wheel and handbrake which transform the car and to have a modern phone charger and phone holder is a nice little touch too.
Way way too smooth Matt!! Great little video, lovely results, and, I'd never imagined telling you what a lovely knob you have, but, you do! Great improvements.
Wow! Same driving techniques as in Thailand! As in getting carved up etc and I'm on a twist and go motorbike, Honda PCX. 3rd most dangerous country in the world for motoring
Gorgeous gear knob , Matt, the cars looking amazing. What a difference 👌
Job well done Matt. Love the gear nob.
Careful with the "Gorilla Glue" "It Gets EVERYWHERE!!" A rather unique Treatment of customization ...Cheers
I was going to say why not go for a leather Momo wheel or similar but on reflection I reckon you're doing it just right including the wheels - The MX5 was always about being a modern reliable version of a classic (mainly) English sportscar and that colour/trim combo nails it.
The gear knob is great too but I'd consider a black leather gaiter just to give a bit more contrast between the console and the knob - might look even better?
OO! They have come out really nice!
The car is looking better and better the more you do. A quicker way to do the steering wheel is to beeswax and to buff it. As the is no drying time.
Nice improvements Matt. What you need now is set of triple air horns. I fitted some to my Morris Minor as I'm fed up of idiots cutting me up. It doesn't stop them cutting me up but it's very satisfying scaring the crap out of them with a blast of the extremely loud horns. 🤣
Wonder if train horns would fit?
That gear knob is quality,
You have a beautiful knob there. Excellent improvements to the car with some great ingenuity.
When you were sanding, did you notice any of the black stripe coming off? That’s the one bit I don’t want to redo, I’m no pinstriper!
I'd get a wood wheel for my Corvair if could find a nice one. I have that same "WorkMate" table.
Love a Corsair, great looking cars
the speakers in the head rest have a zip at the side of the head rest i watched tasty classics do a repair on his car
Shame you didnt link made by basils site to this video.
What he does it a good idea and the chequered wooden one would be my choice.
Gear knob looks great, really like that. Glad to see those awful steel wheels have gone! 👍👍
Glad you like the shifter, the wheels are still in progress...
Bravo mate, love those finishing touches and the gear knob looks like it's always been there !! Can't wait to see the newly painted wheels, are they done yet ?
Not yet, not bought the tyres yet
@furiousdriving Gear knob "hotter than the sun!"... are you a Partridge fan by any chance... ;-)
very much, but that was an accidental Partridge...
I hope you put a grommet in the hole you drilled for the wires or someone will get a short to earth one day.
My only concern with the position of the phone holder is whether it will get in the way when a phone is in it as you change gear? Watched one of the vids from the TDC channel and he has a Crossfire (yeah, I know...) and it has a flip up cup holder slightly back from where that is and he was constantly catching it with his arm.
No, it's low level enough not to be in the way, cups would be a problem there though
love the content at the moment keep up it coming. However I'm going to sound like a broken record I have seen every car on the furious fleet except the W123 Mercedes. Which if your not careful one day I will be on an airplane to England to come & steal it away in the dark of night & have it exported Down under to Australia.
You promised some W123 content after you fixed the Crown Vic, Time to see this promised W123 video.
As I keep saying, as soon as the Crown Vic is off stands and mobile I can move it out of the garage to get to work on it - its too big to even walk past in there, never mid work on!
@@furiousdriving yeah yeah! I shall be on a flight over to England in august to help move the crown vic out of the way with a giant crane truck. Then the W123 will be free & on the back of a low loader. It’s a crime to have that lovely Mercedes hidden away. One can only dream 😴
Great work, Matt. Is that stick on "photowood" original to the Eunos? Are you going to get rid of it?
I don’t think it’s original. It was done very well and possibly in Japan.
I’d like to take it off but don’t know if it will leave a residue, and let’s face it, mx5 dashboards are a bit boring otherwise!

Was this filmed before u changed the wheels or have u put the origionals back on ?
Ive not bought tyres yet so still on the alloys
No put the original one on ,,
No!
Yes @@furiousdriving
So, stupid question or query. As you're in effect hard wiring a permanent auxiliary power point, do you inform your insurance company? I remember when I had a mobile phone kit installed many many years ago which added a USB, the fitter strongly suggested I told the insurance company, and the manual supplied hinted the same. When I informed the insurance they listed it as a no difference modification.
I tell them about most changes, but Ive never bothered with things like extra USBs as I dont think they'd be bothered
@@furiousdriving insurance is such an odd murky subject. I barely understand it..
Sure someone could 3D print an adapter between the ash tray and phone holder
If we had a design, that would be the tricky part
Did u use the tea shelf?
This thing has poor shelf qualities
👍🏴😉
Awful gear knob. Should have got one to mstch the sterring wheel if you were going to not use the original.
At the start of the video I was thinking a skateboard gear knob would look great in there... And it does! Good work.
I love the Gear nob. By the way I saw you/Steph and Hubnut get a mention in next months Classic Ford Magazine. (Rustival 2)
Nice lacquering on the wood! When you revealed the gear knob I thought you've bought a replica of Senna's helmet 😄 Beautiful made and really like it. And a great solution on the phone charger. 👍
Result! Pondering your visibility issue, would a flag be an idea. You could get away with a rising sun.
ronseal water based varnish on that wheel bad choice.. wet sweaty hands and it will go soft again. polyurethane or 2k clear coat spray is the weapon of choice. good luck
9:28 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
Is the muffler loose on the P6? Seemed to have a bit of a rattle occurring when you reversed it.. 🤔
I think its bodywork
Taking the centre consol off would have been a good opportunity to replace gear shift boot, nylon cup and replace the turret oil. Maybe next time. Like the steering wheel and gear knob upgrade. On the subject of near accidents it reminds me of the time the Post Office changed overnight the colour of their green vans to yellow because of accidents.
Bugger! I meant to do the turret oil when that came off as well!
Not for me just too quirky, like the original. Nice car though 👍
Ha, my mx5 gearknob is from a 2cv :-)
Matt, which one of your V8´s is most economical with the go go Juice, whether in town or on a longer extra-Urban drive; the Crown Vic or the Rover P6? I´m curious as I believe they now have similar cubic capacity , or am I wrong?
Hard to say as the P6 is still running in and the fuel gauge doesnt work!
Isn't it Mrs Furious's? 😀😉
Yipee I'm 2nd
Matt, On repairs of seat speaker grills, you can unzip around top and front tips forward , to replace speakers, so you csn also have access to rear of perforated leather hopefully fix from behind, w/o renoving seat covers , upgrade speakets too , locate the zips on headrests . Hope it helps
I didnt know that, never noticed the zips but will take a look!

Have you got a link to the knob site? Careful... 😉😎

Did you decide on her name? Eunice?
Thats closest. Aunt Eunice
Loving this!
I got my Nardi wheel signed by Bob Hall and Tom Matano today! A very good day out for an MX5 nut like I.
Wow! Was that at the national? I wish I’d known about it sooner
@@furiousdrivingYes, it was a great day out. Had a nice chat with Bob and Tom about the first BRG special editions, and how they chose the interior and Nardi bits. Both very nice chaps and very interesting to meet.
BRG Roaster with tan leather and wood steering wheel etc looks lovely.
It crying our for bbs style dished wheels or even minilite style wheels. It will really finish off the roadster look.
That gear knob looks amazing Matt 👌🏻, such a great idea to recycle old skateboard’s. Great upgrade on the phone charger and extra USBs a bonus if you fit them and so nice to be doing just nice accessories for a change and a break from welding and engine faults, all dirty jobs 👍🏻
Rather than the globe shaped knob a cylindrical egg shape like the genuine one may have been better.
My Eunos has the same Nardi wood pack. Steering wheel and handbrake are ok at the moment but the gear lever knob could do with the same treatment. Ive always worried that it could end up looking worse if I try to do something with it but Matt as your wheel has come up so well I must give it a try.
My ashtray area has two factory fitted cupholders, but they are also absolutely useless because they are way two shallow to support a drink. Its like they gave up thinking about things when they got to that area of the car.
Good idea to put LED's in the interior lights, the standard bulbs hardly illuminate anything because they are so low down.
Also those cup holders are in the way of changing gears!
Measure your bulbs before you order them, there are 3 sizes they used
Great video, good idea on the phone holder/charger!
Gear knob is awesome, nice choice.
Lovely knob
cool. are you going to Compton Verney on Sunday?
No, I dont know that one?
