Also loved Breeders, Throwing Muses, I would however propose that Smashmouth had a slightly more sophisticated sense of harmony, they drew a lot of inspo not just from trad rock, but also 60s psychedelic, exotica/lounge and cocktail jazz. Lots of altered dominants and voicings outside of the typical power chord tropes. I'd also include Cardigans (great female-fronted Swedish pop) a part of that genre as well.

It's a 60's and psychedelic, it could go right next to Madonna's "Beautiful Strangert" and be looked as just as brilliant. Smash Mouth has a few songs that really made their mark, I love this and "Pacific Coast Party" as two absolutely original entries into pop music.
