- The Dead Man Walking Tornado - Jarrell F5 Documentary
A deadly tornado outbreak occurred in Central Texas during the afternoon and evening of May 27, 1997, in conjunction with a southwestward-moving cluster of supercell thunderstorms. These storms produced 20 tornadoes, mainly along the Interstate 35 corridor from northeast of Waco to north of San Antonio. The strongest tornado was an F5 tornado that leveled parts of Jarrell, killing 27 people and injuring 12 others. Overall, 30 people were killed and 33 others were hospitalized by the severe weather.
The tornado destroyed approximately 10 percent of the homes in Jarrell;[62]: A1 at the time, the city had a population of about 450 people and had been previously struck by tornadoes in 1987 and 1989. Hardest-hit was the Double Creek Estates subdivision west of downtown Jarrell.
The 1997 Jarrell tornado was the first and only known occurrence of an F5 tornado in Williamson County. It was also the deadliest tornado in Texas since the 1987 Saragosa tornado. The thunderstorm that spawned the Jarrell tornado began west of Temple along the flanking line of another thunderstorm earlier in the afternoon of May 27.

good vid 👍
It would be cool if they would do a scary tornado movie with the Dead Man Walking tornado
“The dead man has just walked into Jarrell.” That gave me goosebumps.
That is really freaky !!!
I wonder if it really is an old legend, or if the media just made it up?
To suck lungs out of a cow😮😮😮 ... that is a powerful vacuum, that no being could live through
The Jarrell tornado is something straight from hell.
The fact it slowed to almost a pure halt when it got to the estates. it’s like the tornado had some sick mind of its own. Truly a terrifying beast.
Can't say I heard of it before
In the dead man walking photo it doesn’t just look like it’s walking, it looks like it’s wielding a scythe. Sadist tornado.
The devil made that tornado probably
I said this tornado looked and felt dark. It makes no sense but it felt so creepy and the damage at 2-3 miles per hour was unreal. It sandblasted appliances to dust so I can’t imagine the human and animal injuries
@@BLUJAI100 I believe almost no remains of humans were found besides the teeth. Fucking horrifying
'If you see him in a tornado, you are about to die. The dead man has just walked into Jarrel'. Biggest goosebumps I've ever had.
I cringed. But I guess this overdramatization is a part of American culture.
@@Marianne-Bachmeier-Extremist Tell that to the almost 30 people that this tornado killed. Hope you're proud of yourself for hating on them.
@@seanrosenau2088 Let me get this straight: I'm hating on people, because I cringed at someone spirituallizing a natural disaster?
You're out of your mind.
How about this angle: It's disgusting, how a tragic event was exploited for entertainment and you're in support of that. Are you proud of yourself?
@@Marianne-Bachmeier-Extremist I'm American and I'm on your side, it sounded incredibly dramatic and silly. No disrespect to the victims.
@@Marianne-Bachmeier-Extremist no, you're hating on people because you think that American culture is the only culture that has ever turned a force of nature into something spiritual. Must not have heard of literally every other culture throughout history. You take a video with chilling mortality and turn it into your platform to talk down on America. Just have an ounce of knowing like right place, right time sort of thing.
Tornadoes are scary. Night tornadoes are terrifying. Hell, they're all terrifying

I was wondering why he moved the camera to the white SUV, then I realized he was using it to set the correct white balance. 👌 Old school trick - the videographer did a great job.
I would've never known. Awesome eye you got
@@ineverletup5316 Thanks, it used to be a pain - especially in twilight/low light like that. Even the human eye lost track of what it should be, like your perception changes automatically.
It’s amazing now, I haven’t had to do that or use a card in probably 10yr.
In the dead man walking photo it doesn’t just look like it’s walking, it looks like it’s wielding a scythe. Sadist tornado.
More like death itself
Omg yesssss
It really does!
livestock lungs ripped outta they damn mouth? i never thought id hear such a statement in my entire existance
Same. I can't imagine the suction power of that tornado😮😮😮
"Its just staying right there"
Never want to hear that it means its headed right at you.
This tornado is probably one of the worst I've heard of in terms of sheer nastiness. The thing just SAT on Double Creek. Terrible terrible timing for it to slow down that far.
i poo'd in double creek wipe my bum
What a great camera in 1997. Perfectly filmed
I'm from a small town just an hour northwest of Jarrell and I was 10 when this happened. I was already deathly afraid of tornadoes and was in a couple small ones in my life by then...but the absolute fear this gave us all will never be matched. Until the day I left Texas at 30 years old, I spent every moment of every storm waiting to be wiped off the face of the earth.
The fear tornadoes cause is unimaginable unless, of course, you've experienced it. It's so devastating. I've felt it 5-6 times, and I've also been through 4 hurricanes, one a cat 5. I'd choose a hurricane every time over a tornado.
Well I believe personally that if it isn't your time death will not come for you but if it's your time then there's nothing you could do. And this event is just a physical manifestation of that philosophy. Because not only did the victim's have anywhere to go they had little time to react.
That dead man walking in the tornado was eerie!! Good Lord!...
The Rainsville EF5 could use some more coverage. It has produced some of the most severe damage recorded including tearing asphalt off roads and unburying underground storm shelters.
Tornado TRX just did a video on that one, if you haven't already checked it out it's very informative.
As did Carly Anna :)
…along with plumbing from the foundations
Agreed the way it tossed that bus around and completely stripped it

31 minutes of me yelling at my screen for people from 26 years ago to get the fuck inside
But inside didn't help.

Someone in the comments said/questioned rather, that the Jarrell tornado wouldn't stand up to the standard of the EF scale and would only be rated an EF3 according to some BS book they read, god knows when.
All it takes is common sense to answer the question of: if the 1997 Jarrell, Tx *F5 was as strong as it was?
When have you ever heard of an EF3 tornado rip ALL the asphalt up in an entire subdivision? When have you ever heard of an EF3 tornado remove the plumbing, refrigerators, air conditioning units, carpet, flooring, people, animals, and cars... all gone? It doesn't matter if the houses were well built or not (which actually a few were. Do the research). Ripping off the asphalt takes incredible force. Cars were never found. The aerial photos CLEARLY speak for themselves. Everything was GONE! Not trashed, not knocked over, not torn apart and lying in shambles....GONE!
This is the most underrated extremely strong and devastating tornado of all time (and those comments is proof) It's underrated because of the belief that the slow forward moving speed was the sole cause of that type of damage. That sole theory has been debunked by a few tornados. The Elie EF5 tornado in 2007 proves that people assuming the slow forward-moving speed is the ONLY reason for its damage intensity. "Experts" said the same thing about the Elie tornado because it stalled over a particular area over one house and said its stalling is what caused a house to be swept off it's foundation. Giving it an EF4 rating incorrectly. It wasn't until amateur video surfaced that recorded the tornado as it hit that house. The video showed it IMMEDIATELY sucking the house right off its foundation and OBLITERATED it. THEN it stalled. The same "experts" and surveyors had to upgrade that tornado to EF5. This is one of the reasons why the EF scale is very flawed. Jarrell showed every single sign of it being as powerful as May 3 1999 Bridge Creek tornado. People always say "well the Jarrell tornado picked up so much soil and debris that it created a sandblasting effect."
Excuse me, but what tornado rated above an EF1 hasn't picked up soil and debris???
The Jarrell tornado DID have incredible windspeeds to rip up asphalt, trees, houses, grass out of the roots, cars (some never to be found again), and people have the naive nerve to say the slow forward-movement is the only reason for its power. The CAPE for that day was 7,000 J/kg. You can SEE the violence in the updraft in the video. The inflow jet in this video shows how strong the winds were from 4 MILES AWAY!!
The Fargo, ND F5 of 1957 was slow forward moving and did nowhere NEAR the damage intensity that Jarrell caused. Same with Hallam, Nebraska tornado.
All it takes is a little research to find these things out. Yeah, it was slow moving. But it would have done the same amount of damage if it were going 50mph. Just like Smithville, Hackleburg Phil Campbell, Moore, and Joplin.
I would love to see the so-called credentials of that book's author you spoke of. As I said before, "experts" have been easily proven wrong. The ignorance and lack of technology was a catalyst to an even bigger flawed system of measure.
There was no Doppler on Wheels on site in Jarrell that day because they weren't even expecting tornadoes at all. Scientist thought that every tornado needed windshear to form. The Jarrell storm system proved them completely wrong. As I said before the CAPE was over 7,000 J/kg one of the highest ever recorded (It was only over 5,500 at Moore '99 and Joplin '11). The inflow jet was SEEN, FELT, AND RECORDED 4 MILES AWAY! And you question whether it would hold up to the flawed Enhanced Fujita scale?? The same scale that rated El Reno an EF3 after LITERALLY a Doppler on Wheels RECORDED the windspeeds at 296 mph. The EF scale is rated on damage intensity ONLY. Windspeeds are obviously no longer taken into consideration. And that's a major flaw. Especially when a tornado like El Reno doesn't hit a populated area. The sub-vortices were reported to be stronger than the main condensation funnel. It's what killed the Twisted crew: Tim Samares, Carl Young, and Paul Samaras (Tim's son). The Chevy Cobalt they were in looked like a giant picked it up, chewed on it, and spit it out. It sucked Paul and Carl completely out of the car and their bodies were found roughly 1/4 to 1/2 a mile away from the wreckage.
Jarrell was in every shape and form the monster it was. It's RIGHTFULLY rated as *F5 which is stronger than the ridiculous 201 mph needed for an EF5.
If taken the time to do ACCURATE research and scientific comparisons, you'll find out that every single thing I said is factual, credible, and fundamentally proven to accurate. All of the info is accessible to us all. Instead of assuming and taking someone's word for it, I did my own research.
🏆 thank you!!!!
You seem very passionate about this.
Your completely right most are ignorant on the subject that without a doubt was the worst or one of the worst of all time all the coverage and documentaries I've seen of tornados never was everything gone or into tiny pieces and humans and cattle torn into pieces it was unreal the strength of that tornado
Like May 3rd '99 I would classify this one as being damn near an EF6
@@amyponder9500 that was the ultimate fucking tornado but I think the muhall one was bigger and maybe stronger it jus went over a rural area
🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿 no tornado comes close to this tornado IMO. This is the tornado that showed us all that man has no control and can’t predict the weather. Mother Nature is going to do what mother natures going to do.
But.. tornadoes are so harmless and beautiful right ...no they are a deadly force of nature. To hear a rookie tornado chaser screem out come on form is disturbing. Beckoning for a killer to spawn for their own interest of a photographic moment. The veteran chaser know the significance of a tornado's impact on a area but excited first time chasers think its a game.
Nah, plenty of tornadoes surpass this one....many

umm weather mods ?
Even in its initial rope stage, you can see the intensity of the funnel. For something that's just a force of nature, the Jarrell tornado seemed to have a malevolent feel to it.
It's so sad to hear entire families perished during this one😢
Heartbreaking for the poor animals as well😢😢
Nice to meet the man behind the voice! 😊
This tornado was THE tornado that changed the tornado rating scale. Its wind speeds were so strong that it passed the known F5 wind speeds which basically made it an F6. Meteorologists had to upgrade the the ratings scale and thats why we now have the FE scale
Even from an earlier TLC documentary the statement and sentiment still holds true:
“If you see the Dead Man Walking in a tornado, then you are about to die. The Dead Man, has just Walked into Jarrell.”
I already saw a documentary about this one on Pecos Hank’s channel, but I love seeing them from different aspects. Thanks for sharing.
Pecos Hank is awesome. He not only captures fantastic tornado footage, he is a musician, and he picks up animals off roads, so they don't become road kill. Just an all round nice human being.
“We’re gonna go THAT-A-WAY”!!!
This tornado was strange in that it had at least 4 vortices and appeared to dissappear at some point during formation. Eerie and sad at the same time. Thanks for featuring me and my comment!! ❤❤❤❤❤ And thanks for posting on this monster of a tornado.
That's the most opportunistic looking rope tornado I've ever seen....thing was just loitering around, hoping for the right ingredients
That first video is probably one of the best recordings of a f5 forming into a monster
The outbreak that spawned the Jarrell F5 was my first tornado experience. The Cedar Park F3 that happened the same day grazed my apartment complex, taking chunks of roof off and tossing the family car.
My Mom lived there too!
Scariest day of my life. The big one split. The tornado lifted up for a bit, which meant my house was saved. It went across a major highway and struck an Albertsons destroying most of it. I looked out side and saw the debris flying around. It was moving towards my Moms apartment. I called her and told her to get in the bathtub now! The tornado touched right behind the apartment building hitting homes in the housing development. Had the big one kept going it would have wiped the towns of Leander and Cedar Park Tx too. We do not have basements. No warning sirens either because they bothered people when they were tested. At least now warnings come over our cell phones.
Sht those phone warnings suck. At least where im at, which is about hour north of jarrell. They'll only notify you about 1 in 20 instances that they should.
It moved so slowly that I wonder if the Double Creek victims could have driven away. But I also read that many parents were driving back to the houses from work because kids were home alone 😢
They didn't know its speed, at any given time a tornado can speed up or slow down. Tornado emergency means it's always advised to get to a safe space in your home, or nearby, it's never encouraged to evacuate, imagine an entire town all on the roads at once? Stuck in crawling traffic and trapped on the roads, you are definitely minced meat in that case.
In another documentary - I think the original Dead Man Walking documentary - which had more dramatizations, there was a family that drove out. The dad came home loaded them up and was able to get them out in time because it was so slow moving.
I'd drive parallel to it for awhile, then turn in the direction it came from, well out of it's way. The problem with that is they can change direction as well as circle back to where they came from. Oh well.
@@hollymccormack4081 I remember that. His family and another family that had an underground shelter (because they had been in a tornado in the past) are the only two families that survived. They tell us not to try to outrun one but in this case, it saved their lives.
If youre in thw direct path of an f5 you have a very low chance of living even in a baswment. Most f5 survivors only got side swiped@candydandy2694
Thank you for showing the photos and names of those who passed due to this storm.
Tornados are mesmerizing, I definitely would be the idiot standing there staring at while it sucks me up and throws me out.
Same. Honestly, I’d be curious to feel what it would be like inside in the early stages when it’s only at like ef0 strength
7:22 The complete uninterest in the lady vs the man is wild. I hope they made it through unscathed (assuming so thanks to having the footage). I appreciate the almost cartoonish line of "We're gonna go that-a-way!" Exit stage right. 😂
I wish there was an update on them. I chuckled with the *gasp* "DEBBEH"
@britnirose- Yeah, me too. I dislike hearing about folks in the line of weather danger and not being able to know if they're okay. I remember back during Hurricane Ike I was listening to some random radio station where some guys were talking about the event. Apparently, an old woman called in to them and told them that she was in her beach front home with her husband, who was released from the hospital early due to the hurricane. He was unable to move, and somehow, no one came to help them during evacuation. They were exactly where landfall was going to happen, and no emergency services would come. The old woman asked the hosts, "Are we going to die?" The hosts were beside themselves with worry and sharing the story on the air, hoping they had survived and would call them to let them know they were safe. Not knowing how that ended has haunted me ever since.
Weather is a terrifying thing, and it's distressing how often people shrug it off. Especially with how bad it continues to get every year.
I scrolled to the comments cuz I felt the same about that, how can u be so unbothered with a tornado heading ur direction lol
Heavens to Murgatroyd, exit stage riiight.
This channel is great, provides useful educational information, and i learn about each tornado.
If the sky is a funky color, you've got hail coming out of nowhere, and you hear a freight train without being near the tracks... You better seek shelter fast
I grew up in "tornado alley" in Oklahoma, I've seen some crazy stuff.
My husband and I lived in SE TX when hurricane Harvey hit. We lived just over an hour from the Gulf. He had grown up with hurricanes and never experienced a tornado until we moved close to the OK/TX border... I always told him tornadoes can be more dangerous.
When we evacuated for Harvey, I kept telling everyone I knew to leave. Even my own husband refused, some even laughed at me. They told me I didn't grow up there like they did, so I knew nothing. If you respect the storm, you study it and learn its behaviors... How it develops...
The computer models all said Harvey had only a 20% chance of doing exactly what I insisted it would do. Because of my husband's stubbornness, we almost got trapped. Please never wait!
This tornado stripped the road from the ground. It also pulled storm shelters out of the ground.
Wedge tornadoes are scary, but there is something eerie about these twisty long things. If there is anything more terrifying thana tornado, I have yet to see it.
Imagine something so angry, purposely striding forward with intent.
This one is noteworthy and the way it came to be so uncharacteristically is terrifying
1976 June 13 Jordan Iowa was wiped off the map by an F5 and F3 anticyclonic combined to make a V shape path i was 11 years old when that one hit lived in Boone which was just a few miles from Jordan

I have been fascinated with tornadoes since the palm sunday outbreak of 1965 because I was in it, though thank God the f4 tornadoes hit about 20mi from us. My Father took us to our Grandparents house because we didn't have a basement, and I was scared like never in my life. Anyway with that said I have read many stories of tornadoes and I can tell you that Jarrell was pure evil.
I remember stories of blades of grass driven into the body of cars, animals stripped of their hides, 2ton concrete slabs sucked of storm shelters, full size trucks crumbled like aluminum foil, mail, pic's and letters found hundreds of miles from their original location. With that being stated do not underestimate Mother nature. Don't be foolish when a Tornado is near. Just remember the Moore Oklahoma Tornado drove a telephone pole through a 6 inch concrete curb clean through and shifted an entire 6 story hospital off its foundation. These are documented facts.
The one about the animals is true. They couldn't tell which bodies were cows or people bodies because the winds were so strong it ripped off skin and limbs 😓
Such a well constructed video, provides everything from the start of the day, how the weather system progressed and formed, up until the point it hit the town of Jarrell.
Best channel i have found in ages, you just gained a new subscriber!
I was 7 n we went through waco dad told us to get down n we were in a saburban with the dutchman wow
Exactly. The el Reno ranking was ridiculous. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jarrell was over 302+ mph
The definition of: 'It grew legs and messed everything up'....holy shit...no words for something so creepy and scary..
You should cover the 1991 Andover F5
Yes!!
I was one of the NOAA trained trackers who chased that monster! My crew and I were there before the Red Cross. We stayed to help as best as possible, but the heat and debris and grief was astounding! FEMA literally did next to nothing for that town but dumped huge amounts of money into Red Rock which received much less damage, but had very expensive homes unlike Jarrell.
Good to know about the RC, I'll be careful with relief efforts going forward.
@@andreachilton6037 RC was there before any other organizations. They did a great job! They’ve been there when no one else dared. I’ve been in 2 combat zones with RC. Highly recommended ❤️
I have relatives that passed away and we were not able to go… the information we know is that they died in a tornado, lived around this area and died around these days but they are not mentioned as victims… there are just too many coincidences that make me believe it was this outbreak but idk how to find more info so that I can get closure for their next of kin
Amazing that it looks like it will rope out over and over again for so long without passing it on to any other funnel. Then disappears behind a line of trees and comes out a full blown wedge. The sky just doesn't look that ominous in clouds but there is that light green haze in the backdrop.of otherwise cloud free sky beyond the storm with the funnel.. This definitely doesn't start out like a chaser magnet.
That’s absolutely terrifying! Those poor people and animals..it was heartbreaking 💔😢
Cover the F4 in la platta MD and the F3 of college park Maryland, unfortunately both claimed a few lives. It's very rare for tornadoes that big in Maryland. Plus I haven't seen that much coverage on them
Could you do one on the EF4 that hit Ellabell Georgia? I have pictures on scene of the aftermath. It tore through our little town and completely flattened an entire neighborhood and destroyed buildings in town. I've never seen a tornado before that and I pray I don't have to ever again. It barely got any coverage since we're a blink or you miss it in the middle of nowhere type town.
Mans voice is absolutely amazing and beautiful

the first footage + audio is not from the jarrell tornado. The audio is from a footage recorded inside of the Joplin EF5 in 2011. The Footage is from the Moore EF5 of 1999
It’s one thing to watch a tornado not knowing what the outcome will be. Watching the footage while knowing lives were being taken as you watched hurt me to my very core. God bless those left to grieve.

Could do the Joplin, or the mayfield Ky. or the tri-state outbreak. All were record storms
You could do a documentary about Harvest AL. We were hit by 2 F5’s within 30 minutes in the 1974 outbreak. Another F5 in 2011 super outbreak and again in 2012. Hit the same areas every time.

Have you done a video on the Rainsville tornado in the 2011 super outbreak?
I cannot understand why these people had no storm shelters to seek safety?
It's Texas. And I think shelters should be in every town. We had a freaking closet to go in.
This part of Texas rarely gets tornados.....and the ground is rocky/limestone.
Ever talked about the 1953 F5 Beecher tornado in Flint, Michigan?
have you done the 1996 oakfield wisconsin tornado? it is local to me so i want to learn more about it!

Why did it look like a small rope tornado for those one guys and the. A giant tornado at 23:58? Was it just the perspective and distance or did it just grow and intensify?
It grew and intensified, I heard that there was about a 5-10 minute gap in footage there, but that timeframe may be off
Only when you lose everything, you start appreciating the small things you had and you didnt even think about it.
In a place like this you need a good bunker. Its irresponsible to not build one.
I hope that a lot of the people made out out of that ef5 tornado cause they are very strong and very serious and people got to look out before it comes

You aren't wrong ;)
I remember this happened the year after the movie Twister came out. I thought the movie was a little over the top before this. It was a bad day for Texas, most tornadoes aren't that bad, it gives you a false sense of security.
Too many people lost their lives. They did not hear about the hurricane visiting to prepared themselves. Take away themselves (leave) the area.😢What a lost.
Have you covered the Tri-State Tornado yet? Yea? What about the Joplin Tornado, or the Moore Creek Tornado, or even the El Reno Tornado?
Joplin, Moore Creek and El Reno yes. However not the Tri-State Tornado
It doesn’t matter what we learn, people will still stand outside and watch it and not go inside for safety!

Glad I don't live in Oklahoma anymore. The severe weather in the spring really sucked. I grew up in Texas, even had a nighttime tornado come through a field right by our farm house in Texas when I was young, but still nothing like Oklahoma severe weather.
The one that hit Round Rock in 2022 does not compare to this one. Horrifying.
