- Опубликовано: 19 май 2024
- It’s mid May and the fresh greens are being overtaken by the spectacular Spring flowering shrubs. I take you on a guided tour of the whole garden - front and back.
The ‘stars’ of the show are the deciduous and evergreen azaleas, various types of weigela and the rhododendrons - all in full glorious flower.
My English Garden is near the coast in North-West England, 1/3 of an acre (including the house) Zone 9a with sandy soil.

Hi Paul, your garden is beautiful! I just had to share this with you... I was watching your video when my grandson crawled up on my lap to watch it with me. He was watching Paw Patrol (a cartoon) He kept pointing at the screen and saying flowers! Then smelling the screen...I’m secretly hoping to turn him into a gardener! You should feel proud that you are more interesting than Paw Patrol to a 3 year old! Thanks for the videos! Love from Wisconsin
What a lovely story Stephanie, I feel honoured that I can successfully compete with Paw Patrol and I think he’s well on his way to being a gardener and nature lover!
Couldn't agree more when you said, "I love everything that happens in the garden"!
Thank you 👍🌻
Except what my neighbour's cats do in my garden!
I know what you mean - I don’t like cats doing what they do in my vegetable beds or attacking the birds.
Everything is beautiful in your garden, paul..🌼🍃
Only missing the water lilies flower😍🤍
Thank you Mr Sidhanta, hopefully the water lilies will do well - last year wasn’t so good with very few flowers unfortunately.

Your garden is looking beautiful as always and I noticed that your Grielinia hedge by the shed bed is coming along nicely as well.
Well spotted - that hedge has certainly started to grow well. I'll give it a prune to smarten it up and also encourage it to thicken.
Hi Paul, glad your foots getting better, the gardens looking fab as always, I'm happy with mine looking really nice at the moment but the rain today is terrible, take care have a lovely weekend. X❤
Thanks Helen, nice to see our May gardens looking so good. Like you - masses of rain here, just starting to stop now ;-) enjoy your week. 🌸
Perfection!
Thank you!

Happy to hear your foot is on the mend. :)
Howdy Sue, thank you - the Spring has been a good one and sitting on the patio in the evening listening to the birds is a nice reward
Good morning!
Wow. ..6 Wiegelas, Rhododendron, azaleas ❤all your flowering shrubs in bloom. Bonus, birds singing. Gorgeous 😍
Hello Maria, birds singing is such a lovely soundtrack to the Spring garden 👍
8.56 Your cistus is really beautiful.
We have them wild up on the mountains and when I drove up there end of April and beginning of May there were hundreds of pink and white bushes in bloom. Now they are finished. This is Korinthia County, Greece.
But your azaleas are just stunning.
That must be quite a sight having them proliferate in the wild in Korinthia!
Glad you enjoyed my azaleas.
Thanks Paul, hostas look great! think I'll take a 'leaf' out of your book ❤
Sounds like a plan Mrs Dale. 👍
Beautiful
Thank you!
félicitations Paul , le jardin est magnifique
Merci Roger!
Paul, your garden is just fantastic! Always glad to see you. Have a wonderful day 💞
Very nice of you, have a good week Judy. 🌸
You have a very beautiful garden and the plants are also very healthy.
Thank you Vaani.
Hi Paul . What happened to your foot ? I wish you a speedy recovery . Your garden looks stunning with these amazing Azalias Weigelas Rhododendron Clematis and other plants .I lovet . Have a wonderful day .🌿
Hello Lina, glad you like the Spring garden. I did far too much intense walking on a trip I did in March - my foot reacted badly to it and created further problems. It’s on the mend now, thank you. Great excuse not to do the weeding 😀
What a beautiful garden. I’ve just found your channel and can’t wait to watch more 😬
Thank you and welcome - I hope you find my garden interesting. 🌻
Always love your garden Paul but this time of the year is my favourite. Your Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Weigelas look amazing. I managed to buy another Avalanche Clematis from Gordale last week. I'm going to keep it in a pot this time. Isn't it nice hearing the birds? I was given a bird feeder for Christmas and I'm getting better at recognising all the visitors. I've got loads of Starlings and it's so cute watching the adults feeding their babies. Let's hope the good weather continues as we've waited long enough.
I wish you good luck with your ‘Avalanche’ Wendy - it can be a slow grower but it’s worth the wait.
A bird feeder will really up the variety of birds into your garden.
Those starling chicks are enthusiastic about life - hope you’ve got ear plugs! 😀
I am loving this warm weather - just perfect for me.
Wow!😮🤩 Your garden looks Amazing Paul!😍 I have a 20 year old weigela and she is very small, I don't know what she needs, maybe she doesn't like the soil or the place, but seeing yours, mine makes me feel embarrassed🫣Thank you for the beautiful tour!💚💚💚💚🌵🪴
Thank you Saya.
Does your weigela flower? I know some weigelas stay small - I had one called ‘wine and roses’ it stayed small and never seemed very happy in my garden - wonder if it was the soil?
Bună ziua mia placut tare mult bravo chisinău
Thank you!
Vă mulțumesc, mă bucur că v-a plăcut videoclipul. Salutări la Chișinău
Everything is looking lovely. If your hydrangea is causing you trouble give it to someone that has a damp place. Glad to hear your foot is progressing. Thanks for the video.
Thank you, glad you liked the video - yes, I’ll find a home for the hydrangea 👍
Fabulous as usual. My rhododendron is in bloom as well as my weigela that has taken at least 30 to 40 cm in a single year! I unfortunately lost three shrubs due to an overnight frost late April and I thought I had lost my young Paulownia tree but it has survived; It is a wonderful tree that grows very fast. They call it the Imperial tree in Asia.
Great growth on your weigela! Glad your Paulownia tree has survived OK.
Hi paul. Your garden looks great. I had to laugh when you said you had to threaten the hydrangea. I also have bindweed. Its a nuisance. Hope your foot improves. My son and i are going to Chelsea flower show. We are looking forward to being there. Its beautiful here at the moment. Take care 🇮🇪
Hi Catherine, enjoy yourself at Chelsea, hope you have nice weather - reminds me; I must do a 'Chelsea Chop' on some of my perennials ;-) All the best.
Good Morning Paul, if your garden isn't at it's peak now, I don't know when. So much colour. Azalea King no longer... Azalea god! Weigelas looking so beautiful, too. What a perfect time of year. I hope you have a good physiotherapist for your foot! 😊💚🌱
Hello Margaret, my garden is certainly a 'Spring garden' - we had a lot of rain last week and warmer temperatures now so all the plants have picked up pace. Foot doing well thanks - good excuse not to do the weeding though ;-)
Ooooo, I like that one. No weeding due to sore foot!
😂😆
Wow so beautiful love all the different colors thank you for sharing your beautiful garden. Love from Washington State. 👍🙏😊❤️
Thank you Khay, I’m sure your whole area is also looking fabulous at the moment! 🌸
Outstanding as always! I am working on putting more green in my black thumb with the rhododendron. I think working on drainage, using holly tone and a little iron might provide a more hospitable soil for them.
You're correct, I must continue to feed it iron now it has responded.
Супер канал почему я не знала его раньше ?

🙋♂️PAUL,GOOD AFTERNOON HERE NOW,GREAT TO SEE YOU AND YOUR GARDEN 🪴 DOING WELL 💚💚💚😊
Hello! Thank you - it’s appreciated. 🌻👍
What a show Paul - after all the hard work on the lawn and shed beds it's hard to believe how much has changed. It's all so beautiful.
Thank you Wendy, I have come to realise that it's an ongoing process - and changing each season, even if I don't intend it!
Hope it's not too wet in your beautiful area - it's pouring down here - and no doubt tomorrow as well.
Been following you for several years now, and I just never get tired of your garden. Simply beautiful. Glad foot is better. Take care, and thanks!
So nice - thank you Fredi, it's appreciated.
Beautiful garden with the singing birds in the background. What beautiful sights and sounds. Thank you.
Greetings from Ireland☘️
Thank you Rosemary 🌻
I want to say a huge thank you to you Paul. You inspired me to plant some rhododendrons and azaleas. They look outstanding and make my day every time I pass them, they have transformed my garden!
Isn’t that great when you get plants and they perform beautifully - I’m delighted! 👍
Yes, life goes on! Garden is lovely.
Thank you!
What a paradise you have created! So beautiful!
Thank you for sharing it with us.🙏
You’re very welcome - thank you.
Your garden is so lovely; thank you for sharing! Spring is my favorite season and I suppose one of the reasons is the blooming rhodos and azaleas. I have a deep pink deciduous azalea and the spicy fragrance is intoxicating and it fills my back yard with that lovely scent. Your vast collection has me wishing for many more azaleas and rhododendrons for my garden.
We need more months of May each year! Your deep pink deciduous azalea sounds lovely - I started my collection because of the fragrance but the vivid colours are just something else.
Nice to hear that you are feeling better! Thank your for this flowering tour! 🤩
Very much better, thank you.
Your garden is looking wonderful x
Thank you so much.
Congratulations Paul !!!
Your garden is very beautiful !!!❤
It's an explosion of flowers and color 🌺🌻🌸❤
Must say, the garden has surpassed itself this Spring - I'm delighted, thank you Patricia.
I love gardening and flowers. I need a man who loves this too....
Gardening is certainly a rewarding interest for most people.
Wonderful tour of colourful spring shrubs. Our winter took a toll on several of our Rhododendrons. Love Weigelas and so do the Hummingbirds.
That must be wonderful sight - hummingbirds enjoying the weigelas - alas no hummingbirds in Europe.
Nice to see you back with another beautiful garden tour! Love that variegated weigela !
Thank you - it is a beauty isn’t it!
A lovely tour Paul, thank you. Pleased you’re feeling better. Happy gardening.
Thank you Lil, I'm really enjoying these warmer temperatures. Enjoy your garden.
Hurray, so happy to see you.
Thank you! 🌻
Absolutely gorgeous!🌼🌹🌿
Thank you 🌸👍
Good morning! Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden! It’s quite inspiring to see! 💐
Hello, so glad you enjoyed my garden.
Greetings from Kentucky in the US Paul. Your garden is beautiful. I love all the colors of your azaleas and rhododendrons. It makes me want to go to the garden center and get a few new ones myself. Happy gardening, James
If you’re into colour then you definitely need some of these plants! Now is a good time because they’ll be in the garden centre in flower and you’ll be able to see exactly what they look like. Go for it James!
Piękny ogród! jestem zachwycona :)
Thank you - very kind of you.
Dziękuję - to bardzo miłe z twojej strony.
stunning, its a credit to you.
Wow, thank you 👍
Nine barks are drought tolerant in my zone 5 Canadian garden. They come in many sizes and varieties. Maybe that would be an option for the thirsty shrub you're replacing.
Wow, I have just looked up Nine Barks - never heard of this shrub before; but it looks ideal. I'll see if it's available in my local garden centres.
Hallo Paul!beautifull video,lm going to see it!so tired,lm going to rest by seeing your video!bye from Betty!oh l love birds song!
Hi Betty, I agree - those blackbirds sing so beautifully.
💖👍
🌸👍🌻
Hello Paul.
Wonderful video, so many colors in the garden can’t help but delight us after a long winter. I have a Bieberstein plant growing, it grows very quickly, I grew it from seeds, I recommend using it to retain moisture, it is ideal as a ground cover plant that retains moisture near the ground.
Good afternoon, thank you for your suggestion - I have looked it up and it has lovely blue flowers as well 🌻 growing from seed is very satisfying 👍
Thank you for giving us a tour of your lovely garden. Can waigellas be pot grown?
You’re welcome.
In my view anything can be grown in a pot - if the pot is big enough and it gets plenty of food and water. So yes, try a weigela in a pot…big pots make big plants. Good luck.
@@paultsworld thank you
Hi Paul, I always enjoy your garden tours. I think May is my favourite month in the garden. I love the Azaleas. You must have low pH soil. Do you prune the Azaleas after they have flowered or just leave them? Shame about the white Hydrangea being in the wrong place. 😕 I have potted on the Angel Trumpet it seemed to double in size overnight. 😊
Congratulations in getting your Angel's Trumpet to really get going - sky's the limit now!
I just leave the azaleas - the spent flowers will drop off. I tend not to prune the azaleas - but some people like them nicely rounded so a light prune would do now.
With many thanks 😊
As always, your garden is looking beautiful Paul! I’ve recently moved house, so just trying to get to grips with my new garden & clay-type soil. I’ve been thinking of making a new garden bed in the middle of the lawn, but I’m hesitating … what if it’s in the wrong place? … what if I don’t like it? etc … I think I just need to take the plunge and do it!
I totally understand your hesitation on a lawn bed. First, I think lawn beds really add to the look of a garden. They break up the 'football pitch' look.
First lay out a hose in the shape you are thinking - live with that for a week or so. Move it a few times - make it bigger - smaller.
What I really like about my lawn bed is that it made a pathway round the garden - somewhere to walk round. I like a lawn bed to be nearish to other beds to make this 'path'. I personally don't like a lawn bed bang in the middle of the lawn - but some people favour this more formal look.
What do you think of my lawn bed? Size? Positioning? Size of plants? Shrubs or perennial flowers?
Go for it Lindsay! ;-)
@@paultsworld thanks so much for this advice Paul! Great idea to mark it out with the hose first, and as you say “live with it” for a while. I agree about it creating a path around the garden and breaking up the expanse of lawn. I really like your garden bed - especially as it’s not symmetrical and it gives some height and interest to the centre of the garden. I would love a pond too - first things first! I will let you know how I get on 😊
A lawn bed will make your garden ‘cozy’ pretty quickly - do let me know how it goes - I was amazed how quickly the plants grew and the bed looked mature. 👍🌸
Beatiful healthy garden...u use some fertilizers..?..or it is organic
I haven’t fed any of the Spring plants this year - but I do use my own compost and also some bought fertiliser such as tomorite
Sunt bucuroasă sa va privesc
Thank you Nina
foarte frumos din partea ta Nina 🌻
Great garden, why not replace the hydrangea with a yellow leaved weigela, (perhaps rubidor or olympiade)
Could I ask what variety is the cystus?
I have just looked up your suggestions - they are an ideal choice, I like the idea of bright leaves as it's a dark area.
I had lost the name of the cistus - but I've just located it in my notes: Cistus 'gold prize' Rock Rose
Glad your foot’s getting better!!
Your garden is looking amazing, as ever! I bought a weigela last year and it suddenly died this spring. Dunno what I did wrong there..??!! 🥴
Ooh I’ve just thought: my little azalea is finishing flowering? Should I deadhead it? If so, should I prune or just snap spent flowers off, which do you recommend? You’re the expert, boss!! 👍🏻☺️
Sorry to hear about the weigela - I also have had a number of plants die - sometimes we will never know unfortunately.
Because the spent flowers on the azaleas are so small I don't deadhead them - I simply leave them to fall off. You can prune the azaleas to tidy them up but I leave mine to 'meander' - if a branch is unruly I might just snip it off. If you would like your plant to look nicer you could gently pick off the dried flower petals with your fingers.
Ha, ha - don't know about the 'expert' bit ;-) I'm a trial and error man
@@paultsworld oh it’s only little, I like to let my plants “meander” as well, to get as large as possible coz I like the sort of untamed shrub look! That weigela Florida Variegata (??) in your video is incredible. I have to try to hunt one down! I’ll just leave my little azalea be! Thanks! ☺️
I'm sure you'll find the variegated weigela - good luck!
You must have fairly acidic soil to grow so many azalea
It certainly must be on the acidic side but not by much as many of my hydrangeas are pink rather than blue. But certainly these acid loving woodland plants do well in my garden.
2.49 Isn't Rhododendron Dopey?
I have a huge English flower book but there is no chapter on azaleas.
Maybe the azaleas are covered in the rhododendron section as azaleas are a type of rhododendron
Any idea what kind of fir that is? We have the same one and I wish I knew what it was because it is browning and we'd like to know why.
I think it is Conifer chamaecyparis pisifera boulevard but not 100% sure
@@paultsworld Oh wow, thank you!
First!
👍😀
13.37 Well, hydrangea comes from the greek word ύδωρ ,ythor meaning water. It needs a lot of water and shade. I was kind of sad when you said, " It's got to go" .
That’s a good point and an appropriate name, however hydrangeas were not named because they need plenty of water.
The botanist Grovonius in 1739 named it hydrangea because he thought the flowers looked like an ancient water pitcher.
Combining the words 'hydro' (=water) and 'angeion' (=barrel or pitcher) resulted in the name Hydrangea.
It is sad that a plant has to be dug up but it will be more healthy in its new location.
@@paultsworld Ouaw, I didn't know that, about the name I mean.
Oh, I thought you were going to throw it away. In greek we call them Ortansia.
Thank you. And yes you are right, azaleas are in the Rhododendron section.I hadn't looked that well in the book.
Glad to hear the azaleas are in your book!
@paultsworld Yes, in a tiny section and on the same page it continues with rhododendrons, very strange.
I do feel a bit ashamed that I fifn't know angeio,( αγγείο in greek )is the second part of the word hydrangea . Better late than never!
Always great to learn new things - I like to learn something everyday. You have a great advantage knowing Greek - so many words have Greek origin - I'm not bad with Latin but never learned any Greek unfortunately.
:😢 after 14 seconds, video loses audio (for remainder of video)
I exited then restarted, hoping it was a glitch on my end... it wasn't.
Beautiful garden, but can't hear anything
As soon as I read your message I opened the video on RUclips and played it back on my phone - the audio is all there. I can’t understand why it doesn’t sound when you play it. Do other RUclips videos play sound for you?
@paultsworld yes they do. (Watching the Joplin tornado doc right now). I will definitely come back to yours when I get off work and hopefully whatever glitch I am having with your video will be over. Enjoy your week!
Glad your other videos are playing OK - the mysteries of technology! Hopefully it will sort itself out.
I have just received a second comment where the person says they couldn’t get audio!
The problem is that the spoken audio is coming out of the left channel only which I would suggest might be the result of putting your voice on a stereo audio channel in your editing software when it should go on a mono channel to play through both channels. Try listening on headphones/earphones to hear what I mean.
this video is without voice
Sorry to hear that - you are the second person who has said that. I have checked it on my system and it plays correctly with audio I don’t know what has happened.
