As a nurse: people don't seem to understand how absolutely terrifying and life-wrecking diabetes can be. It is so much worse than just "oh just gotta take insulin"

RE: the medical alert bracelets... yeah they cost money to have. You have to pay an annual fee ($130-$300 CAD) to get a membership, then you pay for the bracelet itself, which is anywhere from $40-400, depending on the model you choose. The bracelets are also made with nickel plating, so anyone allergic to skin contact with nickel can't wear them consistently unless they want an oozing, open rash on their wrist. It's not a perfect solution.

I've begun cutting sugar out of my diet - not entirely, but taking sugar free options when available - and the amount of every day products that are just loaded with sugar is terrifying! Always, ALWAYS read the labels on anything you're going to buy to eat or drink; you won't believe how much sugar gets crammed into the least suspecting items.

Also, "low fat" is often code for "we loaded this with sugar and salt to replace the missing flavour of the fat". You need fats to process nutrients in your food.

    I got coughs with strep.
Hideous coughs though. Strep is usually white in your throat so that should give it away

Got strep pretty much every year growing up, and all that time got the little white spots. At some point in grad school in my late twenties or early thirties, I started occasionally getting a kind of strep where there weren't visible signs.

Not any sort of medical professional, but there's so many misconceptions about having epilepsy. The most common is assuming that because I'm epileptic I must be photosensitive(no strobe lights), which isn't necessarily the case but it's nice people care. One crazy one I've heard is the amount of people who didn't know you're unconscious during a seizure, and no, you cannot talk. DO NOT put something in someone's mouth if they are having a seizure, as they can aspirate it and die. Lay them down on their side, and if it lasts longer than 5 minutes call an ambulance.

I knew a guy years ago who was a brittle diabetic.
He had several toes amputated, would eat sugar like no tomorrow, raise his blood sugar insanely high, feel like death.
Over and over and over.his organs all shut down, and he died.
Was it worth it to eat all those sugary treats all day every day? Doubtful

It's got to the point that calling someone obese is treated the same as calling them a racial slur, and as someone who is in school for EMT I'm all for it. Be fat. Drink. Smoke. Insulin is expensive, and skullcap helmets are legal!
