I grew up loving the Celtics. But Detroit was as close to an actual group of warriors as you’ll ever see. Unapologetically themselves and would back it up. Yes we talk about all the great teams of that era, but The Pistons were pretty special.

Pippen and Jordan had gone to 5 NBA Finals in 7 years going into the 1998 playoffs. Also if the Pistons were tired from their run back in 1991 then Rodman was definetly long in the tooth by the time 1998 rolled around. The 91 Bulls swept the Knicks 3-0, beat Philly 4-1, swept the Pistons 4-0 and beat the Lakers 4-1 in the Finals. They weren't even tested as they only lost two games in that playoff run. From an athletic standpoint Pippen and Jordan were in their prime and the role players had found their confidence. The Pistons had no chance against them because prime Jordan and Pippen with a supporting cast is so much better than Prime Thomas and Dumars (or whoever you want to put as their number 2) with their supporting cast it's not even funny.

The media around the league, with justification, disliked his thugish play. The media used the Hall of Fame's character clause, which makes integrity, sportsmanship and character qualifications a voting consideration, to keep Laimbeer out of the HOF. On his stats and accomplishments alone, he would be in the HOF.

Not age wise but as a unit they were clearly on a decline. 1990 they won 59 and the championship. when Bulls beat them in 91 they won only 50. The next year they lost in the first round next year, 40-42. Not saying prime Bulls couldnt beat prime Pistons but they never did and Pistons didnt beat prime Bulls. I hate how fans discredit the Pistons after the last dance documentary but here's the thing with them getting "old" Key role players of the Pistons were in their mid-thirties. Vinnie Johnson, Laimbeer, Edwards, even Aguirre, they even lost Mahorn to an expansion draft in 1989. The exhaustion of playing three straight finals also caught up with them (even to add their 1987 run to the ECF when they lost to Boston in 7). Try to watch the Bad Boys documentary and they really folded after that 91 season because of age and injuries. Rodman, Isiah, and Dumars were all in their primes in 1991 but they never had the supporting cast they once had and they never stood a chance against the Bulls.

I guess if it makes you feel better to pretend Detroit was somehow crying about their time being up that’s cool. They had no reason to be upset. Their time was clearly up and their prime was behind them in 91. Chicago was in 91 what Detroit was in 87 when they finally got past Boston. Detroit had nothing to be upset about in 91 as their time was up and they had an amazing run.
The league didn’t view Chicago as a rival like they did Detroit until Chicago became the team to beat in 91, and by that time Boston and LA were well past their primes.

I grew up loving the Celtics. But Detroit was as close to an actual group of warriors as you’ll ever see. Unapologetically themselves and would back it up. It’s not like that group was controversial for controversy’s sake. It’s just a rare moment where a mix of guys with fierce determination met PLUS they considered winning the ultimate goal. Yes we talk about all the great teams of that era, but The Pistons were pretty special.

The Bulls got better in 91 but I believe it could have been a better series (4-2 Bulls) if not for fatigue and there own issues.

All three teams star players were much younger but you don't see MJ and Scottie saying they lost cause they took care of business. Pippen and Jordan had gone to 5 NBA Finals in 7 years going into the 1998 playoffs. Also if the Pistons were tired from their run back in 1991 then Rodman was definetly long in the tooth by the time 1998 rolled around.
The 91 Bulls swept the Knicks 3-0, beat Philly 4-1, swept the Pistons 4-0 and beat the Lakers 4-1 in the Finals. They weren't even tested as they only lost two games in that playoff run. From an athletic standpoint Pippen and Jordan were in their prime and the role players had found their confidence. The Pistons had no chance against them because prime Jordan and Pippen with a supporting cast is so much better than Prime Thomas and Dumars (or whoever you want to put as their number 2) with their supporting cast it's not even funny.

On court Laimbeer was the dirtiest player I've ever seen and the badest of the bad boys by far. He was eager to take cheap shots any time the refs weren't looking. The media around the league, with justification, disliked his thugish play. The media used the Hall of Fame's character clause, which makes integrity, sportsmanship and character qualifications a voting consideration, to keep Laimbeer out of the HOF. On his stats and accomplishments alone, he would be in the HOF.

I was thinking the same thing. They were probably in the league for about 5 to 7 years at that time.
They were in the conference finals for 6 plus years went to the finals 3 str8 years battling out with Boston and the Lakers.

The next year they lost in the first round next year, 40-42. Not saying prime Bulls couldnt beat prime Pistons but they never did and Pistons didnt beat prime Bulls. I hate how fans discredit the Pistons after the last dance documentary but here's the thing with them getting "old"
Key role players of the Pistons were in their mid-thirties. Vinnie Johnson, Laimbeer, Edwards, even Aguirre, they even lost Mahorn to an expansion draft in 1989. The exhaustion of playing three straight finals also caught up with them (even to add their 1987 run to the ECF when they lost to Boston in 7). Try to watch the Bad Boys documentary and they really folded after that 91 season because of age and injuries. Rodman, Isiah, and Dumars were all in their primes in 1991 but they never had the supporting cast they once had and they never stood a chance against the Bulls.

Funny how Laimbeer, and the other pistons could shake the Bulls hands after they beat them in the previous three playoff matchups, but when the Bulls finally beat them, they were sore losers. That wasn’t wining because you had to literally assault Jordan to beat him and the Bulls. I hated the pistons and still do til this day.

Other than my Rockets winning 2 NBA Championships, the most memorable NBA Finals were the 89' and 90' Detroit Piston Bad Boys. I hated the Boston Celtics back in those days, but today I have to admire how good that mid 80's team was. They'll never be another Larry Bird.
I'm pissed about the 86 Finals.....they were just too much. Sampson was never the same player after that series
