Albertan here…. Yep this is a hard one to watch… 😢 words do not describe. But as far as we know everyone got out and that’s the most important part. We’ve lost some bits of history we can’t get back but the people are physically okay! We will rebuild the rest and get everyone moved back home

I feel for the people of Jasper, I've been there and it's a beautiful town. I live in British Columbia where wildfires are unfortunately a part of living here. Right now about 350 wildfires are burning, some out of control. It doesn't rain very often in the summer, but it did today, hopefully, it will do some good.

Thanks for your love Aussie Tash. We're coping...and taking care of our Jasper family as we can. Thank you for shining a light on this tragedy. We're all crying here, but we're also so hopeful. Taking care of the refugees as we can (sadly, we have experience after Fort McMurray and Slave Lake). Our hearts and homes are open to our people. Much love to you for highlighting this issue...from Edmonton, Alberta. Be well everyone.

The mayor also lost his home where he lived since he was a child. Firefighters watched their own homes burn while trying to save others. So many lost everything except the clothes on their back. Some couldn't even get out their pets because they weren't home when told they had to leave with 5 minutes notice. Many Canadians have visited and loved Jasper and are devastated by this. Forest fires are increasing with climate change. Hot, dry conditions, lightning strikes and you have fire. Fort McMurray was less than a decade ago, then Lytton BC, the Yukon, now Jasper. We felt the same sadness for you when we had to watch the wildfires in Australia fairly recently. Thank you Tash for your concern and your love. It means a lot. It matters. 🇦🇺/🇨🇦

I live in Edmonton, the nearest major city to Jasper, and I've been there so many times. It's one of my favourite places, and the fact that a large part of downtown and so many historic buildings are lost. The fire is still going, and likely will be for a few months, until winter comes.
There's another difficult story I read from an Australian living in Jasper. She's a permanent resident, and they left so quickly that she forgot to bring her PR card and documents with her. Her family's apartment was next to Maligne Lodge, which was one of the hotels that burned down. Her apartment is gone, I believe. Without those documents, she can't leave and return to Canada until they're replaced. No doubt there are many Australians living in Jasper, as it is a popular place for young Australians to have working holidays.

Hello from Alberta, 🇨🇦! I live southeast of Jasper so I am safe (for now) but we had so much ash floating our way. Between the extreme heat and the smoke, it’s another summer from hell. Most of Canada is uninhabited so fighting these 🔥 is a challenge. But I guess it’s the same for Australia 🇦🇺. Most of your country is uninhabited too.

I live in Calgary and have been to Jasper only a couple of times but it is a lovely area. My folks had planned to have a trip to camp up their for this week and had to of course cancel. Thankful they were not up their at the time. But still it is heartbreaking such a beautiful community is dealing with this. Loosing a home to a fire is tough, I've have experience in it sadly, but dealing with this much I can't imagine. But Jasper can rebuild and I wish them all the best.
Also huge respect to the firefighting teams who help reduce the damage and keep the overall community alive.

I also looked FROM DIFFERENT ALTITUDES when my husband, step-daughter and I took the tram up the mountain beside the town of Jasper. GLAD I STILL HAVE THE PICTURES OF CAPTURING THE ENTIRE TOWN although sprawled out yet STILL NESTLED WAY BELOW with its noteable railway connections. Cannot forget capturing THE CONTINUOUS SNOW-COVERED MOUNTAIN TOPS through an open easy trail to walk (except husband took a rest on a flat boulder!) We also able to look at the adjacent mountain where (during the 1980's) the CNCP MICROWAVE TOWER was positioned at the mountain's top/peak...important to me as an employee of same company in Vancouver, BC. 😢NOW this unfortunate tragedy for locals, wildlife and tourists....❤may rain douse out the flames❤❤may all levels of government, insurance companies, GOODWILL musicians coordinate together fundraiser jamborees❤ across our nation❤ in order to initiate immediate ACTION FOR REBUILDING JASPER'S AREA for wildlife, wilderness and town....a very tall order I know..... ❤Please and thank you in advance!...

Other towns were lost prior to 2023 as well, but Jasper National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, so this is a huge loss. Thanks to Australia for sending us firefighters, now and in previous fire years. And yes, it is still burning. They burn for months typically. The worst one to date was the Fort McMurray fire in 2016, with must of the city burned and something like 88,000 evacuated. It burned from May 1, 2016 to August of 2017, before it was finally deemed "out". Many evacuees didn't return home for six months. Incredibly the people were evacuated without incident, and there were no deaths directly related to the fire.

For context on how quickly it was to reach the town. One of the firefighters that was interviewed stated that it was about 5km's outside of the town limits. Then it grew fast and suddenly to a wall of fire about 100 meters high, and reached the town in 30 minutes. That's how quickly the weather turned to help it grow he said.
The other reason being the province that day had wind gusts of up to 90km/h.

A little light on why jasper burned. a little under a decade ago they stopped pre burning and cutting fire barriers because it was unsightly for the rich folks coming into the park. Evergreen trees will burn because their sap is like gasoline. When they mature and reach the end of their life, they burn very easy. People seem to forget that we have wild fire season since I could remember. And unfortunately these decisions wrote the story.....

Tash, this is a horrible event, but others have actually suffered worse. This is NOT a consolation, but most of the losses are to individual homes. These can and will be rebuilt, perhaps many if not all could be constructed with modern environment friendly systems such as heat pumps, as well as fire resistant materials. For many, those who only stop in Jasper for a meal or fuel, may not notice an incredible change. The historic east side commercial street, Connaught Drive, survived quite well.
Many of the camping areas survived, and most famously, the legendary Jasper Park Lodge complex, world renowned since the 1930's, only lost a few bungalows. Nature will heal very soon, and the majesty of the Jasper scenery will always exist.
