MP Gerald Giam on Protections from Scams Bill

In his speech on the Protection from Scams Bill, MP Gerald Giam highlighted the alarming rise in scams, with over 26,000 cases and $385.6 million lost in the first half of 2024, emphasizing the devastating impact on Singaporeans, including residents of Aljunied GRC. While supporting the Bill’s measures to empower police and banks to intervene in suspected scams, he called for broader systemic safeguards, including real-time fraud detection, a centralized scam database, and accountability from financial institutions, telcos and digital platforms. He also stressed for enhanced collaboration between banks, digital wallet providers and law enforcement. Gerald urged the government to expand protections and address root causes to build resilience against evolving scam threats.
