Can you believe this was originally A MICKEY STORY. It's an adaptation of a comic where Rose gets lost in the TARDIS and Ten, rather than face Jackie's wrath, goes and lives with Mickey for a week.
I can't really imagine it with David Tennat doctor but the idea of Christopher Eccelson's doctor having to live with micky for a week sounds hilarious ngl
You might already know this, but Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, was quite the footballer before he became an actor-he only gave it up because of some kind of spinal injury, so the Doctor being so good was a natural fit for him.
I love The Lodger. It's light on plot, but it nicely allows to show just how comedic and brilliant Matt Smith's performance really is. I love how alien Eleven is, and how badly he fits in trying to be "normal", especially compared to Tennant's Doctor. (Not that I don't love Tennant, but he's definitely one of the most "human" incarnations, compared to the rest.) Honestly, it was with this episode that I realized I actually preferred Smith to Tennant. (McGann will always be my favourite, but I pretty much love them all.) And yeah, I really loved Craig and Sophie's little relationship. Very adorable. Oh, and great reaction, as usual.
Little bit of trivia, Matt Smith might have been a football player rather than an actor as he was coming up through the ranks at Leicester City football club but picked up a career finishing injury and thus his future was changed to that of being an actor, eventually to become the Doctor :)
You may recognize James Corden (who plays Craig) as the current host of The Late Late Show. He had been a comedian for quite a while, but got really popular in the US just after his appearance in Doctor Who. An interesting fact is that the previous host of The Late Late Show, Craig Ferguson, was an *enormous* Doctor Who fan and was best friends with Peter Capaldi, the Twelfth Doctor, growing up. They were even in a band together!
18:00 - This is the best thing you've ever uttered on your entire channel. I very much love your Doctor Who reactions. Please keep them up into the future; I know you don't do this for any specific one of us, but they really do brighten up my day =).
I love how you said at the beginning "I don't wanna cry my eyes out. Can that be a thing?" And I thought, "Yeah, that's a thing." It is a fun episode, and I can see you recognized James Cordon years before he became and late night host in America. Fun Fact: Matt Smith was going to be a professional footballer before an injury curtailed that career and he went into acting. Here comes the big two part finale. You're gonna love it.
Hehe this is one of my favourite Matt smith episodes, just because of how light hearted it is :) Also I just wanted to tell you that I get married in just over 13 hours although I'm not sure why you would want to know haha :) but I'm super nervous and excited and watching all your videos is helping me :)
Another very enjoyable and interesting reaction, thank you. It's a nice addition having the little bits of picture-in-picture. I don't mind not having them at all, but they do make a good little added extra.
soccer is the English name for(association) football, it is England that changed to suit other nations. The USA just never changed cuss they had a game called football which oddly enuff is like Rugby League.
Joy and then sadness...joy at another reaction, sadness that it's a full week till the next one XD Can't Doctor Who also fill the space now left by Westworld? :p I'd honestly forgotten just how good this season was...not the "big" episodes which are memorable, but the filler ones too.
Glad you liked this one :) Like you said it's a nice change from the emotional tone of the last episode, and IMO was played out surprisingly well. All I can say is get yourself ready for the finale cus it's going to be huge (and emotional)!
I frigging love your reviews. Discovered your channel yesterday and has binged all your DW reactions. Hope you'll do it for season 11 as well. Keep it up.
HI Sesska Just found your channel and loving your reviews they really help brighten my day I am a big fan of Doctor who and it's great to be able to relive season 5 again one of the best . I am sorry to here you are having some difficult times and i hope you get through things real soon i wish you all the best . your doing an Amazing job with your channel
Yep, it's a good pairing of episodes. And now I'm going to forever think of this episode as the "monkey episode". I meant to comment on the last reaction that you should always have a box of tissues handy, just in case it's a sad episode. Meanwhile, Matt Smith originally wanted to be a professional football (soccer) player but a spine injury ("spondylolysis") meant he had to give that up ... but it looks like he still has some moves. In a behind-the-scenes on-set extra, James Corden (Craig) insists that Smith *can't* play and all you are seeing is CGI special effects. Not sure I believe that, but Smith and Corden make a good team on and off screen. Looking forward to the two part season finale.
09:46 We all do, Jess. We all do. They are adorable. Since you loved this ep, I'm pretty sure you're going to love Stormageddon, Dark Master of All, when he shows up. The Doctor calls him Stormy. ;)
I absolutely love the two-part finale. In my opinion, it's not just the best Doctor Who story ever, it's the best story ever. But that's totally subjective.
I love it too - I shouldn't because it makes as much sense as most of RTDs end of season extravaganza's - but it just works soo much better for me than they do - I think its energy and dialogue mean I'm being distracted from the nonsensical elements more than I was with S1-4 finales. This is a good thing :-)
+ Dave F Which parts strike you as nonsensical ? Curious because I hear the "doesn't make sense" argument about Moffat's stuff quite a bit and yet it more or less does to me, which makes me wonder if i'm seeing the world in a weird way ;-).
I'm so glad you got a funny, sweet episode to top this off so that you didn't have to cry through everything. It's a lovely fun little episode. Not much to say, but I'm glad you liked it. :)
I can't wait for you reactions to the next two episodes. Some of my favorite Doctor Who quotes are in them. No matter what James Corden does he will always be Craig in my mind.
Yaay! I think this episode strikes the right tone... a bit of comic relief after such an emotional episode and before such an epic finale... I honestly can't wait until next week xD
This reaction was the perfect thing to cheer me up this morning.:) Marvelous. I'd forgotten all about the 'mind meld via headbutt' scene, and i laughed the water i was drinking through my nose. And deep down, really, isn't all most of us ever really want in life to go with the person we care about and live with monkeys... and bang?:D
So I'm rewatching Doctor Who and after every episode I watch your reaction..... Can I honestly say, this reaction is a serious contender for my top five or so favorites :)
An enjoyable enough episode this if not a personal favourite. Have issues with the Doctor's lack of knowledge about stuff he should already know about- like football- hell he spent most of his third generation on earth, and mainly with army folks at that, plenty football going on. And 9 mentioned football to Mickey. But looking forward to the finale- will you be doing what you did with the last two parter and putting them up on the same day? Or will you do them together as one video? Or are you going to take the third option and be as cruel as the BBC were and make us wait a week between!! edit add- Scratch the complaint about football- see Ahsim Nreiziev comment for why!
Matt Smith originally wanted to play football professional, hence why he's really good! He suffered a back injury and went into acting instead which we're all thankful for I love that he got to mix both his passions in this episode! :D
The finale is a great ride. It does have some of the excesses of other seasons, but it sells itself really well. It's adventurous, magical and even metaphysical. "The universe is big, vast and complicated....". I can't wait!
i've just discovered your channel and i absolutely love it! I can't wait until you see the finale, it will be an emotional rollercoaster i promise! i hope you didn't read any spoilers, Doctor Who is full of surprises
I love this Episode. It's hilarious, and being an Autistic person I can really relate to the Doctor trying to pretend to be like a people that he's so very, very different from -- and I totally understand why he failed so miserably at it. In fact, I understand it so well, that I gave up trying to be "normal" _[in the Mathematical sense of the word, which is just being like the largest group, and doesn't have any connotations of "socially acceptable" or the like _*_at all_*_]_ a very long time ago. As for the Series 5 finale, I'll give you the same advice I gave Will Damron aka Papa Kenn aaalllllll the way back when he watched it: in the last Episode of the Season, _The Big Bang_, the final line spoken before the opening credits is an example of a Trope known as "Leaning on the Fourth Wall". This means that the line doesn't actually *break* the Fourth Wall; that is, it is still an in-Universe comment. However, the line is also entirely accurate when interpreted as being directed at the audience. So, the statement doesn't actually break the Fourth Wall, but it sure as hell is leaning on it. Just an interesting tidbit to keep in mind while watching that Episode.
That was a great episode, and a great reaction. I had forgotten about it until I saw you had reacted to it. I can't wait to see your next two reactions. As many others have noted, it was a really good finale.
I always really liked this episode. I don't know if I'd call it underrated because I haven't heard anyone say they're NOT a fan of it but I think it's really important to this season. There are a lot of sad episodes and I think this one being funny went a long way to establishing Matt Smith's Doctor and his quirks.
I love this episode as it shows just how alien The Doctor is especially Eleven. Get ready for what is in my opinion the greatest 2 part finale the show has ever done
That soccer scene went on a bit... but I think it's original broadcast date coincided with the World Cup opening ceremony, maybe that had something to do with it.
Another fab reaction. :D Very interested to see how you react to the next two. Think it's safe to say fans have mixed feelings on them. I cannot believe Sophie is the ditzy one in "Episodes" (Great comedy if you haven't seen it) She really can transform into a role.
SOMEONE ELSE NOTICED THAT PAINTING! In my head canon there’s a perception filter so the Doctor doesn’t notice THERE’S A PAINTING OF THE NIGHTMARE CHILD on the wall!!!!
do you have a specific schedule for reactions? I just love your doctor who reactions, no one watches it with me, so I never get to hear any new opinions on it. I never appreciated season 5 until I discovered your reactions and rewatched it! anyway, hope to see good reactions for the finale!
After two emotional and very sad episodes in a row they needed a lighter comedic episode - especially as a spacer before the two-part finale. Like others have commented, you now have me forever thinking of this as the "monkey episode".
My biggest question regarding this episode is, why is there a one-story building, in the middle of a row of two-story houses? Which architect thought: "house 1-4 and 6-8 shall be two stories tall, and the one in the middle shall be only one-story tall, this will look wonderful". Even if they couldn't afford to make all the building two stories, why the one in the middle and not one of the ends? I am so confused.
Matt Smith was actually a huge football player, he was about to go professional I think, and he hurt himself, so he became an actor... Yeah, that's the story
I knew you would love this episode! The 2 part finale will be rough on your allergies. Make sure you bring Kleenex. You'll need it. But you'll love it.
The fun bits are really fun, although they may not be especially consistent with The Doctor as a character even within this series. My problem lies with all those people making their way up the stairs to help somebody in trouble who are, to put no finer a point upon it, very dead. I know the script tries to soften that by rambling on about them wanting to escape and ignoring what we actually see but frankly it's a bit late at that point. At least Ten would have said he was sorry, and in all likelihood very, very sorry - which would have echoed my reaction. So I would have enjoyed it a whole lot more with a better balance - either a more serious one or, preferably, no casualties at all.
I enjoy this episode more when I pretend that it's not Doctor Who. It drives me nuts that some writers forget that the Doctor has spent several centuries around humans, more time than he's spent with his own people. He's not an idiot. He may be mystified by some of the ways of humans, but he doesn't fucking FORGET THESE THINGS EXIST. UGH, Jesus, I almost threw something at my TV every time he said something or did something completely stupid. How does the Doctor suddenly forget how modern humans greet each other? How does he go from having sports channels on his TARDIS scanner to NOT EVEN KNOWING THAT FOOTBALL DOESN'T USE STICKS?? Nine even SAID "Yes, I've got the football" when Mickey asked. How...JUST HOW?? This is the episode that made me wonder if, during regeneration, the Doctor hit his head on the console and damaged his brain. Because god *damn* it, the Doctor's personality is supposed to change a bit. He doesn't just suddenly forget shit he knew LESS THAN A DECADE AGO.
Oh, and a bit of trivia: This was actually based on a comic short of the same name, but it was Ten getting stuck on Earth, Rose in the TARDIS and Mickey being stuck having Ten as a roommate for a bit. Like Eleven, he was very frustrating. Made all the worse because he and Mickey really knew each other. icyjadexoxo.typepad.com/.a/6a0133f3e8a0d6970b0134870b1dd7970c-pi
Different incarnations. Plus, his memory is selective(he only remembers his family when he really wants to). Maybe he's stuffed away his thoughts on human interactions to the back of his mind?
OH! Wait, more trivia: Matt actually was a football player and played for a bunch of youth teams, until a back injury screwed that up for good and he went into acting instead. So all that playing was really him.
It's not like I don't get it but - calm, man.I think what the show needed, and needs, was a controlling presence. You know, somebody who could keep an overview on character and story consistency. Somebody who might ensure there weren't any huge and pointless contradictions in the Whoverse which would require something along the lines of a Crisis on Parallel Timelines to resolve. Let's call them, for the sake of argument, a showrunner.
The Doctor has spent a lot of time on Earth but he's still an alien. Just because the Ninth Doctor liked football, doesn't mean that the Eleventh does. Every time his personality changes he has to rediscover what he likes & dislikes, and considering that every cell in his body is rewritten each time he regenerates that probably includes his new brain forgetting things that he used to know. The Second Doctor even had to consult his diary to learn who he was, and where he'd been.
Well I've nothing against Muricans in general. Just when Brits go over there and forget where they're from e.g. Craig Ferguson, John Oliver, Chris Martin... the list goes on.
Lol, forget where they're from? What the hell are you on about, do you know him personally? Stop being such an anglophile, it's a comment section about a sci-fi tv show...
Matt Smith was actually training to play football (soccer) professionally but changed to acting after injury.
No it isn't. He suffers a cronic back injury. I heard him explin it in an interview.
Yeah he was in Leicester academy but quit because of a back issue
"I think that we should..." "Bang." I died XD
Can you believe this was originally A MICKEY STORY. It's an adaptation of a comic where Rose gets lost in the TARDIS and Ten, rather than face Jackie's wrath, goes and lives with Mickey for a week.
Really?? That would have been fun to see on screen
Yup. It's a good one too. tardis.wikia.com/wiki/The_Lodger_%28comic_story%29
I can't really imagine it with David Tennat doctor but the idea of Christopher Eccelson's doctor having to live with micky for a week sounds hilarious ngl
That’s actually very cool god it changed a lot then it’s good tho
Matt Smith, if I recall correctly, trained to be a professional football player but didn't work out because of his back or something.
You might already know this, but Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, was quite the footballer before he became an actor-he only gave it up because of some kind of spinal injury, so the Doctor being so good was a natural fit for him.
Until now, I did not notice the Van Gogh painting on the fridge.
I love The Lodger. It's light on plot, but it nicely allows to show just how comedic and brilliant Matt Smith's performance really is. I love how alien Eleven is, and how badly he fits in trying to be "normal", especially compared to Tennant's Doctor. The Lodger is a great comedic episode. A great way to follow up the Vincent episode.
It is a joy to relive these episodes with you.

gotta be on a highlight reel somewhere
I'm not sure there is a highlight reel lol
Don't quite beat "He's trying to be your friend, ya fucktard." in a reaction to Downton Abbey for me, but it's close.
Seriously can you imagine having a friend like Matt's Doctor was to Craig, he would be fantastic lol
"wtf happened to her?"
that's what British girls look like walking home from night clubs...
source: ran night clubs for many years....
ChrisInScotland I'd say in the area of the country this is set in (Essex) it's certainly normal not so much where I'm from (Gloucester)
whovianhistory buff 2345 lol yep Colchester. I’ve been there haha i didn’t fit in. I’m what could be considered posh
She's wearing too much for a Northern girl Haha. But a very correct statement that makes me wonder what Americans look like for Jess not to get it.
She just needed to be carrying her heels and walking bare foot to complete the look
I love how you said at the beginning "I don't wanna cry my eyes out. Can that be a thing?" And I thought, "Yeah, that's a thing." OMG MY LOVE!
CONGRATS!
but like seriously.....did my invite get lost in the mail or?
Kim Hedges CONGRATULATIONS.
Kim Hedges congrats!
sesskasays haha thank you so much! It was the best day :) hehe it must have done! You would have been my guest of honour ! ❤❤
Eric Mishima thank you! :)
I saw this episode before James Corden was a talk show host. I had no idea who he was. And i loved him and still do. He's my Craig!
Same here, I had no clue who he was and now every time I see him on his show I'm like HEY IT'S CRAIG
“I wanna go live with monkeys”
Yet again, this channel is gold! 😂
"I think we should..."
"BANG!"
Another very enjoyable and interesting reaction, thank you. It's a nice addition having the little bits of picture-in-picture. I don't mind not having them at all, but they do make a good little added extra.
Sesska +5 for referring to football as "football" and NOT "soccer".
I here by announce you as an honorary Brit!
Well I did it sarcastically lol and because it seems difficult for some people to understand that I use different terminology being American.
OooOOOOoh get you :)
sesskasays What... You mean speaking proper English..? 😂😊
soccer is the English name for(association) football, it is England that changed to suit other nations. The USA just never changed cuss they had a game called football which oddly enuff is like Rugby League.
I use the words that I've used my entire life living in America. But many people seem to have a problem with it in the past.
Joy and then sadness...joy at another reaction, sadness that it's a full week till the next one XD Can't Doctor Who also fill the space now left by Westworld? :p
I'd honestly forgotten just how good this season was...not the "big" episodes which are memorable, but the filler ones too.
I really enjoyed Matt's first season...
The last good season of NewWho in my opinion, then everything went downhill from there
Glad you liked this one :) Like you said it's a nice change from the emotional tone of the last episode, and IMO was played out surprisingly well. All I can say is get yourself ready for the finale cus it's going to be huge (and emotional)!

Corden's a comedian and I always viewed that "behind-the-scenes" thing you referred to as clearly meant comedicly.
Obviously. :)
Well they certainly hired the worst goalie since Sly Stallone in Escape to Victory just in case.
Oh apart from the plank of wood we got from Middlesborough at one point - a bloke called Pat Cuff. I'd forgotten him, blast it.
09:46 We all do, Jess. We all do. They are adorable. Since you loved this ep, I'm pretty sure you're going to love Stormageddon, Dark Master of All, when he shows up. The Doctor calls him Stormy. ;)
Such a fun episode!
Watching this in the future
from the covid-19 pandemic, 2020
I absolutely love the two-part finale. In my opinion, it's not just the best Doctor Who story ever, it's the best story ever. But that's totally subjective.

talk about it here. Maybe see you on the threads for those episodes :-).
Thanks for your patience on discussing future episodes, we definitely don't want key spots spoiled *fist bump*
+beesly01 No worries *fist bump back, makes it explode ;)*
I'm so glad you got a funny, sweet episode to top this off so that you didn't have to cry through everything. It's a lovely fun little episode. Not much to say, but I'm glad you liked it. :)

It's the future host of "The Late, Late Show with James Corden"! :)
PLEASE UPLOAD THE 2-PART FINALE TOGETHER I WONT LAST 2 WHOLE WEEKS
Thankyou again for doing PiP!
i've just discovered your channel and i absolutely love it! I can't wait until you see the finale, it will be an emotional rollercoaster i promise!
i hope you didn't read any spoilers, Doctor Who is full of surprises
I love this Episode. 10:09 I think we should.....BANG
🤣😆😅
lol your 'what!"s at the beginning. Tennant is shook...
That was a great episode, and a great reaction. I had forgotten about it until I saw you had reacted to it.
I can't wait to see your next two reactions. As many others have noted, it was a really good finale.
Love this episode, Matt & James are great in this!
ahhhh thaat was fantastic to watch, last week had my crying, this week had me laughing lol..... Geronimo, "he said Geronimo" sesska = fangirl lol
I don't think I noticed the spooky haunted house music when I watched this previously.
James Corden is great :D
I saw James cordon in this before watching his talk show
I always really liked this episode.
Great episode, great reaction...and your broke the 'crying streak'!
this is one of my favourite episodes. I used to hate James Cordan until this episode of Doctor Who and I'm a big fan now.
That soccer scene went on a bit... but I think it's original broadcast date coincided with the World Cup opening ceremony, maybe that had something to do with it.
Anybody else see the easter egg at 2:41! Just noticed it. Love it when shows do things like that
James is so perfect for this role
Also looks like Sesska has never had to do the walk of shame 😂
Another fab reaction. :D Very interested to see how you react to the next two. Think it's safe to say fans have mixed feelings on them.
I cannot believe Sophie is the ditzy one in "Episodes" (Great comedy if you haven't seen it) She really can transform into a role.
Great reaction as always :) next week seems a lifetime away lol.
Yesss that time again 😁
Yah! It's been a week, but finally you didn't Luke Cage! The next one is both emotional -and- super-cute. Enjoy!!!
After two emotional and very sad episodes in a row they needed a lighter comedic episode - especially as a spacer before the two-part finale.
Like others have commented, you now have me forever thinking of this as the "monkey episode".
Great episode
I remember when it was broadcasted
My biggest question regarding this episode is, why is there a one-story building, in the middle of a row of two-story houses? Even if they couldn't afford to make all the building two stories, why the one in the middle and not one of the ends? I am so confused.
Perhaps all of the upper stories are spaceships...
Something even better.........
"...and bang!" Hahaha! Ahhh, if you weren't already married I'd wrap you up and take you home.
Dr Who: Cures Allergies!
The Doctor is the real GOAT. He should play for England, then they win the WC.
Honest to God, I thought you had a stuffed velociraptor pillow in front of you.
okay so please someone enlighten me with this. what is with the ring with by the end?
Matt messed up his knee, while he was really into football, in his teens.
A bit of a wish fulfillment fantasy maybe. But not bad over all.
Matt Smith used to be a professional footballer!
Tidbit: Matt Smith is an avid soccer player....as you can see.
omg cant wait for s6 e7 demons run .
This was a fun one wasn't it?
please react to Torchwood, I know you've been told to react to Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, DEFINITELY do BOTH, but Torchwood first PLEASE.
It's funny how you begged for a reaction vid without tears on this episode! No chance in this one, too much fun.
Matt Smith was a pretty good soccer player but he had a problem with his spine or he would of been a professional soccer player instead of an actor.
“What the fuck happened to her?” Spoken like a woman who’s never been to Britain on a Saturday night.
lol at 10:12
gotta show more video, can't tell whats going on. still like it
I can't. I can only show ten minutes.
i watch many others that are over 15 min total. just wondering about that. katie, dakra, failwhale, hannahivy and others are over that limit too.
Anytime my PiP is over ten minutes, it gets blocked.
It also has to do with the network. AMC will allow about 15 minutes whereas BBC are much more strict.
Dontcha hate when tv characters dont listen to you lol
I'm not trying to sound mean, but do you know you can use 10 minutes of footage?
She does. I think she likes to focus on doing PiP for the best reaction parts.
I did.
sesskasays Oh. Ok. I guess I'm just ignorant.
I love the James Corden episodes :D
Good job on using the plural, sir.
+Mark McKeown
um, what?
I detest them/him.
Vive la difference
You have just spoiled the fact that he re-appears later.
Mark McKeown: Not exactly a major spoiler though, is it? It's pretty insignificant...
I can't stand James Corden now that he's an American... actually, now that I think of it, I never really liked him at all.
Tom Monty I usually find James Corden really irritating, but I thought he was good in this episode.
ikr? Americans are the worst.
Get over it, so many people complain about him, I'm sure he's gutted you find him so awful.
Well I've nothing against Muricans in general. Just when Brits go over there and forget where they're from e.g. Craig Ferguson, John Oliver, Chris Martin... the list goes on.
Lol, forget where they're from? What the hell are you on about, do you know him personally? Stop being such an anglophile, it's a comment section about a sci-fi tv show...
excellent mug
