Cross Stone is feral, its bitten me a few times. Good video Matt, a couple of historical errors, but not important. I should point out work hasn’t fully stopped at Christ Church, bits and bats are still being done, like leaf clearing and tidying. Friends of Christ Church have had to stop cutting the grass though as Calderdale Council still haven’t sorted out the health and safety training …. 2 years and counting. Other works have also stopped, because we are being asked to jump through hoops, that we are not prepared to do at the moment whilst the huge problem of that illegal school extension is outstanding and waiting to be sorted out. Once it has been, we are quite happy to hop through hoops concerning applications for minor works and faculties etc.
Cheers for that 😊. Yeah, let's hope things get sorted one day.... it's so frustrating when things were going so well. It's more frustrating when the work gets so far and then the 'powers that be' get involved and everything stops. It saps every bit of good will out of the project. We shall see what the future holds......
Good video highlighting the problem Matt. Its awful the state some of these graves have been left in. I cant imagine the loved ones who buried family 100yrs ago would expect their graves to be left to be lost like this. Its almost criminal. I also find it unbelievably disrespectful to build a school extension over graves. These are peoples final resting places. You asked about common sense Matt. It appears its become more and more uncommon sense these days.
Very disrespectful in my view. There's so many excuses about why they're just left like this (usually 'no money') but then you see money bring thrown at ridiculous and unnecessary projects. Common sense is certainly not a phrase for the zeitgeist. Thanks for watching
My dad was a church warden when I was a child, and there were 2 sections to the graveyard, one contained older graves, lets say pre 1920s and the other were graves that were still visited by relatives etc. My dad was told he only needed to tend to the latter, but he refused to do so. I recall him organising a tidy the graveyard day, where locals volunteered to help clear the overgrowth. After which he continued to maintain that section. I used to love helping my dad look after the graveyard, it was so peaceful, and looking back I felt like I was helping keep the memories of the deceased alive. My dad did warn me that the older graves can pose some dangers, not only from gravestones potentially falling over, but also, over the years as the coffins break down they can leave a void, and can cause the ground above to collapse but as long as you are aware of these risks, you can take precautions. It is sad that these graveyards are unmaintained, we should have more respect for those who have gone before us. Thank you for highlighting these graveyards, and this issue in general.
Thanks for watching. That's a very good point about the coffins eventually collapsing. I'm pretty sure that's what's happened at Cross Stone, and caused these hidden holes in the ground. Your dad sounds like a star, and it truly does come down to respect for those who've gone, and respect and care for your village/town. The only reason some of the graveyards in this video look decent is due to volunteers (christ church, Lumbutts) but once they've been tidied, authority slams the gates shut on them doing anything..... so frustrating.
I agree with everything you’ve said in this video Matt. I think the last decade or so we have rapidly become less empathetic as a society. The state of the graveyard will tell you that I.e building the extension of the school over those poor people. Very sad to see but very important that you’ve made this video and highlighted it. Great job! 👏🏼
Thanks Ant. Yeah, it feels bonkers they just flattened the headstones and built in top. Common sense would suggest to move them first and stand them.elsewhere....but common sense ain't common any more 🙄. Cheers for watching, and the comment 👍
It's crazy how they're just left like this, and when communities come together and volunteer their time to help solve the problem, there's so much red tape it saps any life or energy out of it! Thanks for watching.
Perhaps as part of a local history project, the kids could be assigned a grave, and be given a task to try and find out about the person, that way they learn about the grave they are adopting and may be more eager to help maintain it.
@jennyhacking1289 it's a good idea, but certainly with the likes of Cross Stone, there'd have to be a lot of work to make it safe first...but definitely a future project that would work.
That's truly shocking that a school extension now stands on top of human remains. But why should I be shocked? its probably happened numerous time in the Leeds area where I live. Thanks for a respectful video Matt.
Thanks for watching. It's just baffling they didn't just remove the headstones and stand them elsewhere rather than lie them down and build on top of them.
ive cleared the Tall lady statue holding a vase many times , but this summer has been too bad to get near the few that ive cleared in the past. there is a small flat bed war memorial i found too and cleared that , but it will be well overgrown now ..what a shame it got to this state ,, so much history in our neglected Graveyards :-(
Yeah, I know, you've worked hard at Cross Stone....and it must feel like it was all for nothing seeing this. I fear Cross Stone is almost beyond saving....yet, somehow, there are still burials here even now!
That was a great video Matt. My parents grave and my daughter’s grave had the council treatment. You can make anything unstable if you purposely try to push a gravestone which they did even though it had rods into the ground. When I told them about it they said just put some cement round the base. I had to have it removed and put back together again. Idiots. ❤
Thank you Angelo. That must have been very frustrating for you. They seem to have absolutely no care or respect towards the graveyards at all, but happy to see them disappear almost out of sight, out of mind.
It really is, and completely disrespecting the reason the graveyards are there in the first place. People are still being buried, so surely the yards should be in good condition? It's such a shame. Thanks for the comment
yeah putting white stickers on graves saying they are to be laid flat is disrespectful, its like saying oh you cant be burried here anymore. ... :-( great video Matt , i hope people get behind you on this one or say their bit. i havent been back to christ church for a long time , its very sad because its all gone to a standstill and no one knows whats going on ,its all abit tongue tied , ive no idea if we are aloud in or what to help out. yet in other parts of the country there are many friends of Graveyards where they dont have any trouble or bother and just get on with the tidying , its very sad for us here in Todmorden , councils dont seem to care yet actual community spirit is there but get there hands burnt ..bloomin shamefull :-(
It's crazy isn't it. Friends of Christ Church, alongside other community groups, did so much to get that graveyard back to something respectable..and now all that good work (and good will) is lost I feel. Thanks for watching, much appreciated 🙂
Yeah, I've seen some pretty bad graveyards in Bradford, but a few certainly seem to still be looked after or in the process of being restored at least. 'Bradford through the Lens' cover the local graveyards there really well. Thanks for watching

What a magnificent building that church is and a good video mate
Do you mean the one at Christ Church? Yeah. It's an awesome building. Thanks for watching
@ yeah mate. Tod has beautiful scenery for sure
Yeah, I love it here....that's why seeing the graveyards disappear is so frustrating!

I feel the same Matt when I find lost abandoned graveyards They should get the school kids to adopt some stones and tend to them ✌️

Same thing happens here in the US, it's a shame to the honor of who's buried there

vale Baptist is still a community church, many events go ahead in there.
I thought that was the case 🙂

bradford has the same problem matt
