When Animals Roamed The Streets. The Story of Halifax Zoo. 1909 - 1916. Siddal.
Просмотров 345День назад
In 1909, the Halufax Zoo opened at Chevinedge in Siddal, Halifax. The brain child of animal collector Alfred R McKill, who would often be seen with his camel around Salterhebble, launched the Zoo, fairground and cinema and the public turned up in their thousands to see the animals on display. However, the venture was plagued by disasters, cruelty, injury, and escapes! The most famous escapee fr...
Old Leathery Coit. The Phantom Headless Horseman of Elland. Halifax

In the Centre of Elland stands The Fleece Inn. Built in the 15th Century, it was originally known as The Great House. However, in the late 1600s, the Inn had become a place of violence and murder. Around 1700, a man was killed on the stairs inside the Inn. It is said the blood on the stairs could never be removed, no matter how hard they cleaned and scrubbed it. The man was buried nearby in the...
Why Have the Graveyards of Todmorden Been Abandoned?
Просмотров 51614 дней назад
A good number of the stories I have covered on this channel over the last 4 years has seen me head into a graveyard to conclude the tale by finding graves. These have been all over the UK and even in Europe. Most of the graveyards I have visited have been well looked after and accessible. The ones in Todmorden though, my hometown for the last 20 years, are in a rapid decline. So, what has happe...

Fantastic. Thanks to Dani ❤
Hi Matt Thank you so much for that great video. Please can you tell me the name of the scary organ music played towards the beginning of the video ?
Hiya....thanks for that, much appreciated. I'll watch it back as soon as I get chance and try and find out for you as I can't remember from memory. 😊
Brill video Matt some great sculptures there..can’t wait for the next vid ✌️
Cheers dude, thanks for watching 🙂
Fantastic video Matt…loved this one ✌️
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks 😊
My Grandaughter and partner took our 23months old Great Grandaughter to Templenewsam for this light show. They were amazed 👏
@catherineloftus1376 I'm glad they enjoyed it, thanks for watching
Wonderful! Thank you for the video.🙂
@minimoose3235 thanks for watching
@matparks08 We have just booked tickets for the 23rd thanks to your video. Kind regards.🙂
That's brilliant 😊. Enjoy
My dad worked at star paper mill in the 1960,s for many yrs.
Looks a bit different today 🫤. Thanks for watching
@matparks08 Wish dad was alive to have seen your video, but he passed away in 2019
Good place 👍 last time i was there the strangest person appeared.. a nudist , he handed me his phone for me to take a snapshot 😂 and a woman who was struggling navigating her barge through the lock . Theres a museum just out of keighley that has a grey lady in one of the bedrooms ..East Riddlesden Hall ...ivisited one time and felt very uneasy ,I kept walking in and out of that room and something was a miss with it , the volunteer told me a woman was murdered in that room. I picked up on that.. I was quickly out of there😂
Two very different experiences there Elaine. 😅. I don't think I've filmed East Riddlesden Hall....I might stick it on the list. Thanks for watching
always wanted to know more about Angel Meadows, looking forward to what you found out.
Video should be up this week. I hope you'll like it 🙂
Loved this and Dani absolutely cracked me up 😁
@thelittlethingsinlife239 she's bonkers! Honestly....Tom and I are called the eccentric ones, but Dani is up there with us too 😅. Thanks for watching
I did a video of it on the 250th year anniversary let me know what you think ruclips.net/video/mF9ncAQ4i-E/видео.htmlsi=ny1J9NoBGH6NG9mk
It's actually hauntingly beautiful. I hope they save it and the surrounding walls and buildings
Fingers crossed, it would be a shame to see it lost forever. Thanks for watching
Amazing idea and structure. I really admire everyone, involved in the making of the canals.
@@catherineloftus1376 it's amazing, isn't it 😊
The girl with a calliper is the girl from the charity boxes in the 60/70s. At least I think so. She reminds me of the boxes anyway.
Yeah. That's interesting....now you've said it, it brings back some really distant memory. I think you're right 😊.
Your a bit like Dr who ..with a gorgeous assistant..and getting up to great adventures..
😅....as long as I'm not Jodie Whitaker 😅. Cheers
Definitely not ..I don't think about a woman Dr who ..perish the thought..I think 🤔 you could be the next Dr who ..with your 2 assistants ??
It's a trig point. As trainee surveyors in the 60s, we would set up a theodolite on the balcony and observe angles to Manshead, Pike End and various other trig points. Some complicated resections are required, as the true point is the centre of the tower.
Thanks for that, that's very Interesting 🙂
Very interesting, a fair chunk of my family is in the overgrown section of Cross Stone.
Thanks for watching. Cross Stone is, sadly, far far worse now than this video. Hopefully one day something can happen to it. All the best
Fantastic views Matt I’m glad I watched from the warm of my flat.. ✌️
Haha ....I wish that's where I'd seen it too. 😅. I was NOT prepared for that extreme cold at the top. Thanks for watching
Ravenclaw is the best house 😏 great video!
Indeed it is 😊. Thanks dude 👍
Dennys across from the old bus station
Hmmm, not heard of that one 🤔 just up from Sainsbury's?? Either way...thanks for watching
Fantastic studio tour Matt. Happy birthday to Danielle. ❤
Cheers Angelo. It's a couple of months ago since her birthday, but this was the nearest date we could book to go 😊
That looked like an amazing experience Matt.. thanks for taking us along and sharing this with us, and Happy Birthday to Danielle 😀
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it. It truly was, and highly recommend a visit if you get chance 🙂
One can never visit and pass Stoodley Pike too many times. It's always spectacular around there. Those mysterious symbols at the entrance arch keystone @ 10m02 s, The Star of David and the Masonic Compass and square! Or maybe not that mysterious but of relevance to the persons that were behind it's construction.
Yeah, quite true.......sadly, the words and symbols are fading these days, but, yes, to anyone unsure, they certainly add an air of mystery. 🙂. Thanks for watching
Planning to get myself up there very soon for my channel. Possibly in the new year. Also my dog is called Doctor, after well..... Doctor Who
🤣You know how. He was buddys with the royal family. 👑
Yes! I recognise the outside of the building! He drove up to show me one day. We didn't go inside, obviously. I wonder why i thought it was called Castle Hill? I must have a different tale to tell about that place somewhere deep in my memory bank. They should have kept my ex locked up in that school. I might not have met him then 😂😂😂
Haha...oh dear. 😅 Castle Hill School IS in Todmorden, so could he gave gone there for primary school maybe?
@matparks08 No. He was from Levenshulme. He went to this school when he was about 12 or 13. So about 79/80 I'd imagine. 🤷♀️
My go to walk also, I try to get up there at least half a dozen times a year and it has now become my annual Christmas eve hike.
I'm guessing that's a comment in Stoodley Pike? Yeah, it's a great walk to do from any direction 👌
I watched this movie being made in 1979 in Stalybridge I was 9 and sat on vannesa Redgraves talking to her
Good times 😊.
Glad you got down from the freezing heights ok. Perhaps take a hat next time. Anyway, great views and thanks for saving me from the frost bite 🥶. I think I’ll go in the summer instead.
It was a stunning day until the top, it really surprised me how cold it was 😆. Yep....summer for me too 😉
cats bar thursday nights..yessss
Good times 😊
In 1910, pioneer aviator, Claude Grahame-White made a successful non stop aeroplane flight from the Halifax Racecourse to the Halifax Zoo. The racecourse was situated on the site of the current West End Golf Club at Norton Tower, it was originally called the "New Belle View" when it opened in 1878, it was a mile long and covered an area of 90 acres. Like the Halifax Zoo, the Halifax Racecourse was short lived, it closed in 1884, the grandstand had the capacity for 1000 spectators, it was finally demolished in 1913 to extend the West End Golf Club.
Thanks for the info, very interesting to hear about the race course. Any pictures exist I wonder?
We've had it about 5 mins ago in tod.
Yeah, just been catching up on pics as I'm in London... looks bad there 😕
That's a nuclear warning siren? Sandbags or matress against wall ?❤
@matparks08 Our car has now broken down due to water entering through the exhaust!
@Karenjohnston I can understand why you’re suggesting that but it is a flood siren in the Uk. 🇬🇧
An interesting story Matt. Thank you for sharing this with us 🙂
@thelittlethingsinlife239 thanks for watching 🙂
Well done for braving the freezing temperatures Matt. Great hike up there. It must be over 20yrs since I walked up there, I must visit it again one day 🙂👍
Thanks very much, and, yes, you're well overdue another visit 😊
Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey aye 😂 great vlog, proper lung burner going up there in that weather 😂
Definitely was...and it did 😅. Watch me be back up there again in a few weeks though 😁. Thanks for watching
@matparks08 haha 😂 if weathers owt like minus 5 and snow, you'll need to put your long John's on underneath your fabulous attire and maybe borrow one of Tom's mighty fine scarves too 👍 you'll be setting a record at this rate for stoodly pike, 4 seasons and multitude of iconic attire. Legendary status incoming 👌
@thesetwistedhands4452 yeah, it was a very different experience compared to the three previous 'scorchers' 😅. I have a Mr Tumnus scarf....maybe itsctime to freshen up my looks 😅. Thanks so much 🙂
O yes definitely a tough walk, a relief when you reach Stood Pike Matt 👏 amazing scenery.
Normally a relief, but the sudden temperature difference accompanying the wind blowing was extreme. I very rarely feel cold but this time I did 😅. Thanks for watching
lol, brave man. it's been years since i did that. cowd innit.
Aye, very cold 🥶 🤣 cheers
Very good! :) i always thought the zoo was near manor heath park
I wonder if there might have been at some point? I'll have a check. Thanks for watching
Well done Matt. Rather you than me ❤
Cheers. I think you'd have loved it up there 😊
A super video matt ..(again )..I'm going to have a hike up when I'm off work..Monday or Tuesday?
Thank you. Have a good time 😊
Think I'll go past Black Dyke farm..easier route I think ..
Great video as usual. That walk up the front is a lung-buster!
It certainly was in that weather 😅. It looks so tranquil in the video, but at the top it was extreme
