  • Sensual, seductive scenes with my dream girl, Carroll Baker as Baby Doll. Mm! Her sultry innocence just melts me.
Archie Lee Meighan, middle-aged cotton gin owner, can hardly wait for the 20th birthday of his childish bride Baby Doll, when he'll be allowed to consummate the marriage...he thinks. But rival owner Silva Vaccaro suspects Archie of burning his gin down, and takes an erotic form of Sicilian vengeance.

Caroll Baker was flawless in this. I love the way she divided her voice between a not-quite-southern accent and a not-quite-speech impediment, and made it believable. She was flawless. So was he. And so was the sweaty old bastid.

She definitely was. I love how she depicted Baby Doll as a young woman who's going through the stage of not feeling quite ready to grow up and yet not wanting to be treated like a baby. That's the kind of woman that every woman in their late teens and early 20's can relate to imo.

It makes sense because in the rural South in those days it was common for lower class white women to be uneducated. As she states she didn’t make it past the 3rd grade.

Carroll Baker was perfect for this role, and Kazan thought so as well- he handpicked her after seeing her on Broadway. She possesses a certain innocence but also manages to retain a sense of complete sexiness at the same time. She's exquisitely beautiful. Monroe was simply not right for this part. This movie put Carroll Baker on the map, although by the '70s she was doing weird Italian horror movies and her career had dwindled by the '90s. Regardless, she is and was an incredible actress.

It was Tennessee Williams that wanted Marilyn for the part. There is nothing to support the idea that Marilyn herself wanted the part or thought it was right for her. Baker was right for the part because she wasn't a famous star and brought the right touch to the role. Marilyn apparently was kind to Carroll Baker and was a usherette at the movie premiere.

@@ccgrey8731 I believe she played Sookie and Jason's Grandmama in "True Blood" as well!

I'd actually argue that she's a much BETTER actress than Marilyn Monroe, but I don't want to start a shitstorm with the fanatics and 15 year old girls who blindly idolize her. Baker is underrated, at least here in America. Most people don't even know this movie exists, and even less people know much of anything about her. I like Marilyn as much as anyone (I love her in "Some LIke it Hot" and "The Misfits"), but I think Baker had much more raw talent.

If there is a sexier woman that ever appeared in film, I've never seen her. WOW!

I just saw part of this movie on cable and I think she was the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. I know she's old now but now I know the look that I prefer.

@MrJuno6 I don't think Marilyn Monroe was as hot or innocent looking as the woman who was in it.

I have a very big problematic crush on Eli Wallach in this particular movie, and this Titanicesque scene is not cooling it

Just about the sexiest movie I ever saw and not a hint of bared flesh. Two decades later it was no holds barred and yet for all the nudity and sexual content there was in the films of the 1970's and onward they still weren't anywhere near as sexy as this film. Just goes to show nudity and bucket loads of screwing aren't what make a movie sexy. It's the story, the mood, and the acting.

That’s the point. We know he’s creepy, but she gets manipulated.
