As a young Australian with very little knowledge/fucks to give about politics I actually thought these 2 were my only options

@@jacksherman1235 Labor and the LNP are the two biggest parties. Depending on your political views you can be a Moderate Left (Labor) or a Moderate Right (LNP). Then there is the far left (Greens) or far right (Fishers, One Nation, Clive Palmer). Then there are independents spread throughout. If you're younger (like me) you're best to look progressive/left as they try to cater to younger voters than the Conservatives/Right. Luckily we have preferential voting, which allows you to vote for a side party like the Greens 1st and Labor 2nd. This means your vote won't be wasted if Greens lose, it would then go to your 2nd preference or 3rd, 4th etc. Hope that helped your understanding! I advise you to go to the major parties websites and check policy, as debates like this are mostly irrelevant.
I feel like it wasn't as organised as I thought It would be, there was a lot of interruptions and I feel like Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten were confused with all the interruptions.
Wouldnt allow high pressure debate. Answers to questions we wanted being cut short and moving on.

Mr Shorten, why do you want to raise minimum wage? You know this is a road to nowhere.
By raising minimum wages, the cost of living always goes up, not down. The money to pay those wages has to come from somewhere, so it always comes from increased prices of goods and services.
But this suits you. As tax is paid as a percentage, an increase in wages with no decrease in taxation means a large increase in revenue with no relief for the poor.
Reduction of taxes reduces cost of living. This is well known and very obvious. Bringing back import taxes on foreign goods would more than cover any shortfall and would also make Australian made products competitive in the local market again.
Mr Shorten, why do you want to rip off Aussies?
Reduction of tax also decreases funding for crucial infrastructure and public services. It causes the economy to stagnate. Economic growth doesn't come without any risks. The increase in wages for the lower class causes a redistribution of power and wealth within the economy

The Trump administration has proven this hands down.
The reduction in commercial tax has been highly effective at stimulating the economy. This, combined with import tariffs has encouraged production to return to the USA. This means jobs. Lots of jobs.
Because there are so many more people working, there are many more people paying income tax. Also, there is a big reduction in the cost of social security payments. On top of these, tax revenue from the border tariffs is huge. The money made from the import tariffs allows reductions in income tax which offsets the increase in costs of imported goods.
It is a very old business model that is forever successful. Instead of a government trying to maximise profit from each individual through high taxation, having a much larger number of people working and therefore paying tax always leads to a far stronger economy.
Look at a company like Walmart. Each item only has a very small profit margin. Because they sell so many products all over America, the total profit of the company is huge. Oil companies are the same. Mining companies too. The profit margin on every unit of oil or mineral sold is very small but they move billions of units every year and therefore the profits add up fast.
This is why Toyota is more profitable than Ferrari. Ferrari only manufactures small volumes of cars at high profit per car. Toyota manufactures huge volumes of cars at low profit. Low profit, high volume always wins.
Low tax, high employment always wins for exactly the same reasons.
That's not true when its big business like woolies, coles, BHP, Rio Tinto ect the increase in wages comes out of the profits. These companies make huge profits and lowering a wage increases that profit. Its a myth about trickle-down economics.
The fact is when you give more money to low income workers THEY SPEND IT! when rich people get more money they keep it (Or put it into real estate) and it doesn't go back into the economy.

I admire Bill Shorten's calm approach to the debate unlike Scott Morrisons, even after he was cut off multiple times whilst trying to better explain his policy, in a way, this provides a view of his mentality towards real unhesitating change
Ok I'm sorry to say but Labors wage increase is pure stupidity. In no economy, does a wage increase and job security both work in harmony. A wage increase will force businesses to hire less staff and force increases in production costs on to consumers. Alternatively a tax cut from the liberals will see more aggregate demand in the economy, which is much more favourable.
A lack of action on climate change will see no economy at all because society will fall apart

Oscar Wilde notice how I said a pay increase doesn't help. With a pay increase, cost of productions for businesses Increase. These increases are passed on to consumers which cause inflation in the economy. This further erodes purchasing power of consumers and the real value of their wage is worth less. So in essence, a pay increase is pointless and a tax bracket cut is far more beneficial.
Mind you Shorten is not even sharing how much he is increasing wages by.
@@Osh_wij Economics 101. An increase in the basic wage (people at the lowest end of the pay scales) does something that tax cuts to the higher end of the pay scales does not do. It provides almost immediate economic stimulus. Why? Because most of that increase gets spent in the economy almost immediately - buying goods & services they could not afford and really wanted. More goods & services are consumed, more tax (at least some GST), more turnover for businesses, more demand, more profit, those businesses similarly spend more with their suppliers, etc etc - multiplier effect. Those tax cuts - nice for those who get them - but what do they do with them. They probably have no immediate needs (goods & services) and would probably have a think before making purchases of gratification - so that money goes nowhere - at least for a while. It might just sit in savings or investments and never reach the every day economy. Bottom line - if you want the economy to move the best place for stimulus is the lower end - and everyone gets the benefit. Trickle down is just that - a trickle - no good for anyone except the people at the top who control the trickle - one drip at a time....
Except if lower end pay scale people get too pricey then the incentive is for more automation which is coming at a clip. People(labour) will be replaced by machines and no Ned Ludd this time around. @@Michael_CS615
Unemployment= if you work 5hrs a week you are classed as employed. what we all need to look at is the underemployment rate. It's currently at 20%.

Why reform of negative gearing and housing affordability is not even discussed at all? This is supposed to be one of the really most important issues for a lot of Australians.

I think it's a pretty valid point. A good leader can see the good in their enemy. A good leader can see the grey areas. How good can a leader be if they cant acknowledge or even see the good points from their opposition?

Awful format and the sound effects and graphics laughable. Neither leader knocked it out of the park, but only Shorten had detail behind his policy plans. Morrison seemed generally more polished, but his entire policy platform appears to be "lower taxes" without any detail, and spent more time talking about the dangers of Labor than his own vision. Shorten by a fair margin.

Wages - our under diversified low complexity economy is driven largely by domestic spending, our population is quite indebted, it's relatively harder and more expensive to run a business in Australia. Inflation is now 0 and central bank interest @1.5%. I don't see how you can just "increase wages". More likely to see benefits increase and "helicopter money" as it's not likely going to come from your employment.
we all agree that I, Scott Morrison am an pentacostal christian with my head up my ahmm. We all know that i can cherry pick a bunch of numbers to make it look like i can manage money. The leader is somewhat irrelevant, especially on camera. Their ability to operate/control their party is what's key. Vote policy, not personality.

In all honesty was Kevin Rudd truly responsible for the global financial crises of 2007, or did he really manage to prevent the Australian economy from collapsing altogether by implemented strategies to keep Australia workers working in order to to keep the Australian economy strong and from falling off a cliff into a deep recession and the likelihood of heading into a major global depression, which appeared to be at the time a very close call from my recollection.

Why isnt australians talking about how to keep the young australian inside australia? I mean a LOT of young australians that are in uni are finding that job markets in Australia are just not as attractive as overseas like US especially in the new technology industries.
It is amazing how often you hear the term stable government. I have little confidence in the stability of either party. As soon as popularity starts to drop in the polls the knives will come out.. The last 12 years have been a laughing stock from both sides of government. Labor also want the best of everything as Bill stated. To have the best of everything you have to be either very wealthy to afford the cost, or borrow more than you can afford.

Labor want to raise taxes on corporations and very high income. They're progressive, wish to actually combat climate change and have always been for the working class. If you're a middle earning worker then you'd vote Labor without question.

@@sypher0101 The Great Australia Party is a decent 1st choice, but if you're a middle class earner with a full time job or have children you should really preference Labor second. I understand a lot of misinformation has been spread around, but Labor really aren't a bad party.
The problem with Morrison's argument on strong economy is this:
1. Liberal's have been in power for 6 years and have tripled our national deficit, while cutting spending.
2. Cooperate profits have gone up in the last 6 years, but our real wage has not gone up.
3. A SURPLUS does not help the average Australian; A surplus means a government has not done anything.
4. The Liberal talk about tax cuts, they have cut taxes for the top 1% of Australians. The person that generates that surplus in the end is the income tax payer.
5. When the Labor party was in power, Australia was 1st on the OECD economic survey. It is now... 34th out of 38...

It's hard to reduce the deficit when the crossbench in the senate won't entertain spending reductions. The last point is a reflection of how dire the global economy was ten years ago.

um. First you need to understand the difference between deficit from debt. Then maybe look at any graph of deficit over time to understand how it was Labor that racked up the debt while the Coalition that has finally stopped its rise. Then consider how mindless your whole point on this was with your comment that surplus means nothing. Holy moley. You's ain't that bright when it comes to economics.

These points you listed are contentious and could take pages to debate. Seriously, it gives no indication at all about performance of this government. There are myriads of factors and contexts for debate and discussions. Just on your point 4. alone is flawed, look at the tax reductions in the different brackets over the years, they have been cut not only for high earners but also those on lower incomes.
If I were to vote, I’d vote Scott Morris - Bill shorten is the type of person who would promise you anything to get your vote - World economy is at its difficult time, I really don’t think a lot of Shorten’s policy would work at this time. Also more welfare & tax cut? it’s simply impossible you have to have money to back up your welfare that means more tax - by saying tax we all know it’s going to be on middle class hard working people because those on centerlink payments don’t pay tax, those people o at the top have tax evasion systems - Borrowing money overseas is difficult than before as the world economy is not good. If bill shorten is next pm, I could see the most difficult time for AU people that will ever be

Hi Rhys, I know this is an old comment, but do you not agree that tradies are an important part of society, that we cannot operate as a nation without them, that they are very skilled in their specialised fields, and have often highly dangerous jobs which they should be compensated for? I do not agree that people 'wasted' their education by going to trade school. Some people are not interested in academia and not everyone has to be part of the professional managerial class. In fact, the people you look down on in society are actually the most important to keep our country running, the pandemic has proved this.

What my argument is, if you want to earn a surgeons wage or a CEOs you must put the work in for that particular field. And when you have people (mostly labour) that work in a separate field who work hard in a most admirable way yet do not position themselves in a position where their actions lead directly to profits in the millions but want to be compensated in the same way they clearly are wrong in asking for such compensation even if what they are doing is clearly admirable. And as such, if you want to earn the same as the people that put themselves in more profitable situations yet do not, you clearly wasted your opportunity of education. Because labour and the greens want to take MOST of the wages that profitable workers earn and give it in the form of resources to the people that did not earn such wages. Which is great within reason because we all need resources such as health care, but in the degree to which labour want it, it becomes my argument of if you want MOST of the profitable wage earners money then you can't have it because THEY EARNED IT by putting themselves in a situation you could have done so yourself. And as such, you will need to live off your own wage and the resources the government give you that is far beyond reasonable in this country because you choose your path and can't have my money!.

However, someone like Gina Rinehart, who has inherited her wealth which she then invested in the mining boom, thus making billions more dollars, now has amassed of wealth of 24 billion dollars. On my teachers salary, I would have to work for literally 300,000 years to EARN that much money. Gina Rinehart has not earned her money, she inherited it. Now I don't expect her and other billionaires to give away all their money, but it is pointless for them to hoard so much of it, where it isn't circulating the economy. By the way, Gina Rinehart pays less tax than you do. Rupert Murdoch redacted his Australian citizenship to avoid paying taxes here, and yet continues to influence politics greatly through his newspapers. I'm sure you earned your money, doctors who earn 400,000 a year have earned their money, no one is denying that, but the liberals continue to cut taxes on millionaires and billionaires in this country, so that those people will then line their own pockets. It's not just unfair, it's bad economics.

@Since when Australia produces .08 percent of worldwide carbon emissions. Im all for transitioning to renewable s over time, but not at the complete annihilation of our economy which when compared to the rest of the world, our environmental impact would be a piss in the ocean.. It is a fair question. How much am I going to lose in new taxes like death taxes, carbon taxes to make such a minimal world wide effect??? How much will Bills plan cost our country?

@dylan thoms They're all great leaders that had to tackle insane issues of the time and they rose to the challenge, that's what made them significant (Besides Reagan who was horrible). We live in a fantastic country without the struggles those leaders tackled. Bill is notoriously a good party leader and speaker in private. Speaking in front of a camera is a completely different ball game and Bill struggles there. Luckily we vote for the party and their policies here in Australia, the PM has no where near the power or influence of a President and that's how it should be. Policy is what's important, Labor are a competent party that you can trust to do it's best with it's policies.
